Know When You're Bested || Reiko || Trial 4.7 || RE; Mistrial, JoonYoung, Mitsuo, Kris, Clove ATN: Clove
Reiko should have known better. She knew it couldn’t be that easy.
For a man like Mitsuo Ueno to simply accept his fate like that was one of many red-flags that the girl had missed.
Throughout the proceedings, she had her inklings of suspicions, but she thought the evidence was solid enough… Though, a supposedly well-versed investigator would have pressed harder into the other possibilities. And yet…
“ . . . ”
What was she going to do now? Cry like the immature girl she was? (Though, she would agree that’s all she seemed to be good at as of late). She wasn’t sure… but one thing was for certain - she definitely doesn’t live up to her SHSL title…
“. . .”
But, maybe miraculously, there aren’t any tears this time. Frankly, Reiko has been spent of them. However, that doesn’t mean that everything is fine and dandy in her little corner - which is a sentiment that seems to be shared with most of her classmates. As they all waxed philosophical about morality, the detective was oddly silent. Normally, she would be passionately debating, but…
Sometimes, you just get sick of being so weak in front of the people who could kill you at any moment. She does, however, react to Kris’s open death threat.
“… Stop, Matsuoka. Just… stop.”
It’s the first time she’s spoken in a while, and she keeps her eyes trained on the pensieve before her.
“You’re just making yourself look like a dumbass. I remember that you made a promise to me and a couple other people - or are you just going to conveniently forget that ever happened? I thought you said that you wouldn’t take back your word, Kris. Do you really want me and your remaining friends to see you as a liar? Use your head for once, please.”
Any of the energy she had previously has been ripped from her once again, as her stern chastisement of her friend comes despondently.
There’s a dispassionate, dead look in her usually vibrant eyes.
“He is absolutely not worth your life. You’re better than that, so act like it.”
Harsh… But, what else could be expected from the cold case detective by this point? And while you might expect her to say something cutting to the men of the hour, and she does look at them with the same expression, there’s just nothing motivating her at this moment.
For a second, something malicious enters her expression as JoonYoung speaks - his words going over even worse then Mitsuo’s - but no cutting remarks come from her.
Instead, her sights turn to the girl now at her side. Judging by the expression in her face, she was wary by the sudden approach. But, after Clove spoke, emotion finally flickers back to her face.
“… I should be the one apologizing to you… I made you that promise, and already I’ve broken it… I'm so sorry, Clove.”
Silently, the detective slinks from her stand to pull the other girl into a tight embrace. Her eyes momentarily shift to anyone who happens to watch the exchange, before proceeding to ignore the others. They all fall beneath her attention as she continues to quietly mumble something to the journalist.
If these end up being either of their last moments, Reiko wants to spend them with Clove…
Who knows if they’ll ever be able to hold each other like this again?

Transparency || Reiko || Trial 4.6 || RE: Sollith, Hikaru, Miyu
The girl exhaled softly as some people seemed to be in agreement with her side of the debate - but she knew votes could radically change within a matter of seconds. So, she wasn’t entirely hopefully people would side with not hosting the trial.
But, she could add some more information while she’s at it.
“That all sounds fine for me. I think our better bet is to get out of this trial room safely and invest serious time into actually tracking down which student started this. Given what we do know of Juuzou Ohara and the lightly mentioned "Ministry of Magic” - I suspect that someone in those sort of ranks is using us to instigate a much larger disaster.“
The detective bristles at the thought, but inhales deeply and regains control of her emotions.
"Before our time runs out here, I personally think it’s good if we all put aside our pride and share what we do know to be relevant. For example:”
Reiko looks over at Sollith and then the clan mates who can still stand to look in her direction.
“I hope this doesn’t bother you all too much that I bring attention to the Staff Room.”
A hand goes to her hip as she smoothes out a wrinkle in her frock.
“For those of you who don’t know, there’s a Staff Room hidden in the library. To my knowledge, only Genbu and Sollith have access to it at this moment. Sollith and I were apparently the first ones to crack the code to gain access and found a mostly illegible Book with a Chrysanthemum on it. After picking it up, we were knocked unconscious… and were greeted by Otohiko, The Ouryuu.”
“I think to no one’s surprise, she was incredibly cryptic in her words. She talked of her ‘little one’ and how much they were enjoying the 'show’ and told us that she essentially wanted the wizarding world and the world of 'mahounashi’ to suffer. She has connections to the founders, but-”
She frowns with thought, glancing at The Brawler before studying the top of her stand.
“Otohiko said that there was never a 5th clan. Maybe Izumi learned something I didn’t. But, in her own words, she ’[has] always been alone, but not anymore,’… In the same breath she vaguely mentioned the 5th labyrinth to us - the one Suzuki is talking about - and that we will find the truths in the depths of it… The problem is the brutality it forces you through has made it damn near impossible to complete…”
“The only thing I know about the 5th path is that it’s practically a death sentence. It seems to want you to face your own execution - or worse.”

Evidence is Judge, Jury, and Executioner || Reiko || Trial 4.5 || RE: Joonyoung, Hikaru, Kris, ATN: Suzaku, All
She expected this outcome, as much as she didn’t wish for it to be the case. Joonyoung most likely covering for Mitsuo was what she expected, and she had swiftly put in her vote a little while ago. Her eyes followed the supermodel’s crumple to the ground and a heavy sigh escaped from the depths of her chest.
They can’t keep doing this. It’s too much. But hosting a MM trial now…
“I have to agree with Hanabashi on this one, Kris. If we host that trial now, it doesn’t seem to me that we have sufficient evidence to pin someone down. While I’m sure most of us have our suspicions, accusing someone without a solid base is wasteful.”
The detective shifts her weight awkwardly as she examines the faces of those present.
“Yukie only confirmed that ‘dire consequences’ will await. If it’s anything like a normal mistrial, which I’m unsure if it is or not, then someone innocent will likely pay the price. I don’t trust the vague answers from our currently demonic chaperone. I agree on the idea of discussing this as a group, but I’m not quite sure we’re ready to commit to a full-blown trial.”
The girl sighs, playing with one of her rings in quiet thought. She agreed that they needed an opportunity to talk as a group, but the slight vagueness of Yukie’s explanation left her with a bad feeling in her gut. But, she did at least have something to contribute in that vein of thought.
“I want concrete evidence to make a case. I think one of the best ways we can do that is finally soothing Seiji Ohara’s spirit. I think I’ve already discussed this with some of you but, Suzaku needs to return the Magatama that I believe they took from Ohara’s corpse in order for us to get a full conversation out of him. Even if he can’t remember much about his murder, he may be able to give us much-needed context.”
Reiko leans forward on her stand after her long, business-like exhortation on her stance. Following a brief silence, the girl’s shoulders relax a bit and her voice begins to morph with a new emotion.
For a moment, fear slowly begins to creep into her expression.
“…This is going to sound strange, but: The Ouryuu wants all of humanity to suffer. If we don’t catch the traitor soon, I have an awful feeling the pain we experience here will spread. I may be wrong, but I think something bigger than all of us is at play here. However, that doesn’t mean I’ll allow us to throw possibly innocent lives away. We need to make ‘The Chosen’ pay, but desperation will lead to dire mistakes.”

A Kind(?) Gesture || Reiko || Trial 4.4 || RE: Mi-ke, Kris, Clove, ATN: All, JoonYoung, and Mitsuo [CW: Self Deprecation]
It seemed the court responded at least partially to her demand - but Kris’s words and Clove’s thin smile make her silent concern grown - if her face in those moments is any indication.
“… Just don’t do anything stupid, the both of you… Please.”
Reiko studies the ground for a moment almost shamefully. She silently decides that she needs to speak and apologize to them both again after this… but there’s no room for her worthless feelings in murder court! When she raises her head again, her eyes dart aside to cautiously watch Kris approach Suzaku.
“Mi-ke actually helped me remember something I thought to be inconsequential at the time of discovery - which is a blunder on my part…”
Reiko nimbly reaches into her pocket and holds up a tube of some sort so the entire courtroom could see. She read the label herself before turning it towards her classmates.
Bruise Removal Cream. She makes sure she looks at Mitsuo and Joonyoung, respectively.
“Look familiar to either of you?”
The girl turns to the rest of the group to explain.
“I didn’t elaborate on this earlier since I honestly forgot about it, but for context: To make a long story short, we were investigating Ueno’s room and a book intended to be thrown at him accidentally hit me instead-”
She reaches up to brush her bangs out of the way, revealing the absolutely terrible bruising on her face. It looks as if she got two bruises on top of one another. It… looks really painful. Maybe this would explain her extra level of grumpiness today?
“I had already hit my head earlier in the week, so I didn’t handle a book to the face well… But that’s not too important. It’s the fact that after I came to, Ueno had this in one of his drawers and handed it to me. I was too flustered to think much of it at the time - though that’s no excuse for my absolute idiocy as of late - but the fact that he had access to this shouldn’t be ignored. I’m sure either him or Myung could access this, if that’s the case.”
The detective immediately combs her hair back over the discolored patch of skin before looking over at her aforementioned investigation partner, cracking half a tired smile.
“I guess you shouldn’t keep apologizing to me, then. Not that I was holding a grudge, anyway. But, it’s likely that if either Myung or Ueno has bruising - it’ll be faded by now. That being said, approach with caution if that’s your plans… ”

I Need a Breather || Reiko || Trial 4.3 || RE: A Lot. Primarily Shinobu+Kris, Ueno's Shoe Size, and That Note
For a while, the court had received a probably much needed reprieve from everyone’s favorite, obnoxious detective. After smugly dropping the first of several bombshell pieces of evidence against the composer, she had fallen to the sidelines to let others finally have their turn at contributing to the case.
But, the growing flurry of angry yells and accusations were swelling in the court - and the throbbing in her head kept her quiet for longer then she expected. For once in a very rare instance, Reiko felt overwhelmed by the court’s energy and deconstructive in-fighting.
With a hand to her forehead, the girl raised her voice as she finally rejoined the case.
“Alright! Knock it off!”
Despite having lost her temper several times by now, Reiko’s sharp, authoritative tone comes out surprisingly loud. She was often reserved enough to avoid the need for yelling, but it seems there was always firsts for everything here in Mahoutokoro.
Thankfully, she immediately pulls it back in as she sends a steely glare around the room.
“I swear… Half of you are just starting to derail this entire conversation and I'm not in the mood for your childish bickering. Most of you are on the same side, so how about you act like it? We were all upset by this motive or hurt people here we cared about thanks to it, but those are all discussions I think are best saved for outside of the trial room - no offense.”
When has she ever tried to be a voice of reason, again? Maybe people should nearly concuss her more often…. Too bad that pretentious air never went away.
Or, maybe it did for a moment as she watched Shinobu begin to break down on the stand.
[CW; Discussion of Suicide Implications]
… I will say this one thing to you both, Kanamori and Tenshi - and trust me it’s not my business, I know - I can promise you those sorts of actions are something that won’t solve anything. I promise you’re far more helpful by keeping yourself alive.“
[CW END; Discussion of Suicide Implications]
Exhaling, Reiko rubbed a circle at her temple as she moved on. She decided to address the journalist and tarot card reader first, her tone much kinder then it was when chastising the court a moment ago.
”… Anyway, Clove and Hikaru asked about shoe sizes. Sorry I nearly missed this, but Ueno lied about his shoe-size in the second trial. He’s a size 27.5, not a 28.5 - if that helps you. I should have been more thorough during Trial Two, but there’s not much we can do about that now…“
But as they saw the note, the girl calmly shifted her weight to read what Hikaru could present to them. Again, it’s something she’s ashamed to say that she missed… but, she’ll cut herself some slack after literally being unconscious for a time.
“Hm… Hanabashi? I know that this was in his room and is probably a stupid question - but can you confirm that it’s his handwriting? It did match the rest of his notebook, right? Obviously, I was gone by the time you must have examined that.”
Now her gaze falls onto Joonyoung, a melancholy expression taking hold. She breathes in, then out.
“For the record, I will also play devil’s advocate a bit and remind everyone that this motive was one that heavily affected Myung moreso then Ueno: if his reaction to the petals was any indication, as Kanamori just said. His refusal to also let us into his closet is also suspect… The evidence definitely stacks more towards Ueno at this point in time, but I will try to keep my mind more open before finalizing my vote. I ask that you all do as well.”
Thank you for that very unhelpful (and long) update, Eigawa.

Why Does It Always Come Back To Glitter And Shoes? || Reiko || Trial 4.2 || RE: Joonyoung, Sato, Hikaru, Miyu, Mi-ke ATN: Mitsuo, Joonyoung
How foolish she felt to be so ‘out of it’ during such an important time. Despite how much she was just trying to focus on the evidence, it was clear her headache was getting the best of her.
Hey, maybe that meant she wouldn’t run her mouth as much this trial?
But as she listened to the best of her ability, the girl nodded weakly. She could really use a nap right now… but she knows if they get this wrong again, she very well may be taking a permanent one in the afterlife.
“Yeah… All of our laundry was stolen after Zoya was incapacitated. From what my group found we believe we identified Joonyoung’s Shoe, Shiba’s Sock, Outa’s Yukata, One of my Jackets, and Itona’s Swim Trunks. These made a path into the Seiryuu dorm’s secret entrance where we found Mi-ke’s shirt laying there with hints of glitter on it. Though, I just find it more odd that someone would put their expensive shoe in the laundry… ”
Reiko pauses and sighs heavily, going quiet to let Miyu say her piece. You could almost say she looked annoyed with her, but she had been giving off that impression since stepping in here.
“…I agree with you, Suzuki. However. We’re in the middle of a murder trial, and that has to take precedent right now… While I’m just as eager to finally confront who’s done this to us, we should handle the matter of Inoue’s killer first. We can’t afford to derail.”
With that curt response, the detective turns back to the rest of the court.
“Anyway. With this all this talk of potions and spells, I heard Myung mention a 'missing vial’ earlier - the one that isn’t in the lake. When Hanabashi and I investigated Ueno’s room, I saw smashed pieces of glass in his garbage. The shards had remnants of a blue potion and a murky liquid I couldn’t identify.”
Finally, Reiko looks clearly and directly at the composer - hints of a smirk barely pulling at her lips.
“Mind enlightening us as to what that is, Ueno?”

How Many Times Can We Do This? || Reiko || Trial 4.1 || Re: Mi-ke, Hikaru
As silly as it sounded (and was), Reiko was a bit distracted by the pounding headache at the front of her skull. As they group meandered into the dungeon for another round of russian roulette mock trial, the girl daintly put a hand to her forehead where a noticeable, growing bruise was situated.
Ever since she’s arrived here, Reiko has been incredibly clumsy and she hated it. At least the start of trial gave her something else to focus on that wasn’t her newest migraine.
Evidence. Talk evidence, Reiko. You can’t sit there feeling sorry for your head the entire trial!
“Yeah, our group talked about the possibility of a defibrillator spell - but right now I’m not aware of any evidence of this. Inoue’s body lacked any sort of wounds aside from the reddening of her knuckles - which I’ll assume was her trying her normal tactic of self-defense.”
The detective tiredly monotoned her explanation as she scanned the courtroom. She was so tired of all of this…
“There was an emptied, unlabeled vial found in the lake like it was thrown in there. Unfortunately, I got injured midway through my investigation and wasn’t able to find the source. However, I believe it likely could have come from the infirmary given how small it was. If you all remember, a certain person here utilized medication to help end Tenpo’s life. And they’re still at large.”
Some energy seems to come back into the girl as she straightens up. The detective distinctly eyes someone across the court from her, before looking back to you all.
“Zoya was also found unconscious and barely breathing in the kitchen area. There was half a cup of green tea sitting on the counter beside her. This is leading me to believe more poisons and tranquilizers may have been put into play…”

Freshly Cut Cypress | Reiko | Chapter 4 Body Discovery
The investigator had been a bit illusive since the turnabout that was the third trial, and the resulting aftermath. Given her reaction to that entire scenario, maybe her self-imposed solitude wouldn’t be as surprising to most. She had mostly stuck to her closest confidants (the whopping 3 people now possibly 4 she could get through a meaningful conversation with) and Clan Genbu due to her obligated relationship to most of them.
She appeared on the scene just as Itona returned to shore with the girl’s body. While there were one or two faces she caught and knew she had to talk to given the outcome of the Motive, the corpse of a girl she felt she had finally started to understand took precedent.
After her failed attempts at finding a pulse or even properly closing Airi’s eyes, the detective’s jaw set and she gingerly brushed any mussed hair from the girl’s face. Her previous conversations with Airi, as few but personal as they were, were playing through the girl’s head.
Reiko found that she saw a lot of her younger self in Airi’s impulses and short-comings, despite being younger then her. So, seeing the sculptor dead seemed to hit some deeply buried cord within the detective…
Looking up, piercing green eyes bore into the class - venom somehow seething from the otherwise neutral expression.
It seems she was angry over what’s happened. Which is a natural reaction, but her steely aura gives off more danger then may be present in some of her other classmates. Strange how only a couple of weeks ago, she was perfectly content to let this girl perish… but now:
“I hope whatever coward did this makes the most out of these last couple hours because, trust me, you’re not leaving that trial room - not if I can help it.”
That’s definitely a promise and a threat. Only time will tell if that idea comes to fruition, though.
With that, Reiko’s eyes seem to land on someone in particular and guilt (with a fair amount of concern) flickers through her expression. She almost walks away from the body, but the surrounding crowd of investigating classmates stops her. She instead decides to focus on the task at hand.
She can apologize to that person in a little bit - even if, frankly, her personal priorities aren’t exactly straight. She knows she needs to at least start looking for clues before she broaches the subject of the motive… You can bet she’ll confront it before trial, though.
