It terrifies me that there is very much a non-zero I'll be the oldie in this post (except Minecraft instead of Star Trek), in like the 2070s or something.

So apparently YouTube wants to implement an AI based age verification system to "protect kids" when it's really about gathering personal identifying information.
This is apparently being done to comply with UK and Australia's new age restriction laws.
My main response to that is simple: Fuck the British and fuck the Australians for wanting to force personal identifying information requirements upon all of the internet.
Also, fuck YouTube for being enough of a cowardly pet'aQ to bend the knee to London and such like a dog of the UK Parliament.

Insert mention of how Star Trek did both female and colored protagonist captains for 7 26 episode seasons each in the 90s
Weirdo Conservatives: Why should my media be inclusive? It's just a movie! Why do you care so much?
Normal People: Media doesn't have to be inclusive, but I don't know, it would be nice if we saw different people in it and not just the same people. That would probably mean a lot to those who don't get to see a lot of people who look like them or share similar experiences as them. Plus, people shouldn't be typecast to play the same harmful stereotypes over and over again, as that has the potential to influence how they are perceived outside of the media.
Weirdo Conservatives: Oh, my god! You are all such snowflakes! They're just movies! They have no connection to how people think about this stuff!
[Insert the moment a movie includes one or more people of different marginalized groups or contains political themes that frame being an asshole as a bad thing.]
Weirdo Conservatives: Oh, my god! Our children are being indoctrinated! Make it stop! Make it stop!

Sorry, but climate change (anthropogenic or otherwise) does not explain how the REMNANTS of a tropical storm caused a 500 year flood caused more death and destruction than most category 4-5 HURRICANES. The statistical probability of that is absurd.
Although tbf, there was also a once-in-a-century haboob at Chicago + northern Indiana this year, and a fog that may or may not have been making people inexplicably sick back in January across the Midwest.
So maybe mother Nature just wants to fuck with us all 🤷

That's nice and all, but what about when a fully-accredited academic is writing in their PhD/Doctorate's subject field, and is still wrong? (E.g. paleontologists in the 70s being proponents of uniformitarianistic thinking (aka that mass extinctions are never a thing)
A good rule of thumb whenever a non-fiction author has "Dr." or "Phd" next to their name on the cover is to check if:
Their doctorate is real and from an accredited institution
Their doctorate is relevant to the subject matter of the book

I just found my new favorite Kickstarter scam. It becomes more efficient by switching to the triangle.

"The Alternating Current (AC) produced in the generator is being rectified into Direct Current (DC) through the PCB. There, it becomes more efficient by switching to the Triangle*."

A good rule of thumb for AI is "would you trust a trained pigeon to do this?"
"We trained a pigeon to recognise cancerous cell clusters and somehow they're really good at it" okay great, that's something that could plausibly be a thing.
"We trained a pigeon to recognise good CV:s and left it in charge of sorting through all our job applications" uh perhaps consider not doing that.

5 million? That many people have died as a result of war over there??
That sounds weirdly high - how do we know that's a correct number?

This sort of mindset that right-wing evangelicals believe in is a huge part of why Christianity in its current state can be so fucking disgusting.
06/20/2025
by
Kyle Mantyla
While the MAGA coalition is currently fracturing over the prospect that President Donald Trump might join Israel in taking military action against Iran, religious-right activists have been nearly unanimous in their demand that the Trump administration lend its full support to Israel in the growing conflict.
The reason for this is that Trump's evangelical base believes that the Bible commands them to support Israel in order to bring about the return of Jesus Christ and the End Times, as former Rep. Michele Bachmann explained during a recent "World Prayer Network" program.
"This is the one thing a president can't get wrong according to the Bible, according to Joel 3," Bachmann said. "A president can't get Israel wrong. They can't. This is the one most decisive issue that will either take down a presidency or it will lift up and create great promise for a presidency."
"This is a spiritual battle," she continued. "Israel's at her greatest hour of need right now, every nation on Earth should thank Prime Minister [Benjamin] Netanyahu. We should all kiss the ground and be so grateful that Benjamin Netanyahu is prime minister and that he had the guts to take on this greatest evil terror state that has defined plans. And so the United States, in my opinion, we need to be decisive. This is not a negotiation. It can never be a negotiation."
