Concept Nation’s Artist Interview #8: Artist of the Month
“I like to play with the delusion of a reality and the chaotic nature of a dream”
I am yet another wanderer in life, contriving the mystifying conundrums of existence and its meaning. I take art as seriously and passionately as our day to day communication with others; art is no more or less, than an expression of our thoughts.
Meet the soul that made us fall in love with art all over again. Meet Artist Akilesh Kumar.
Q. Where did you study and how did you stumble upon art?
I did a major part of my schooling in Abu Dhabi, U.A.E. and then moved to Chennai to complete my higher school. I have always been interested in Visual Arts. I was scribbling from an early age. My mother says that I used to scribble on the walls of our home even as early as two years old. I used to sketch or doodle on any flat surface that I could find. But I had only deemed it as a passion, and not a career option. It was only after I finished schooling and joined a college in Chennai to study B.Com, that I realized that passion inside me was stronger. Winning many art competitions gave me the confidence that I could consider doing art as a career option. After three years of B.Com, I studied Fine Arts for two years in Singapore. Now, I aspire to become a Professional Artist.
Q. How would you describe your art style?
As of now, I focus more on Figurative / Portrait art in an illustrative style. I also try to incorporate “Surrealism, Art Nouveau and Abstract Figurative” in certain works. I am still at an experimental stage and this style of art has no definition as of now.
My take on art is to bring to light, certain new ideas or concepts; to enter zones without any boundaries as such. I like to play with the delusion of a reality and the chaotic nature of a dream. Absorbing this notion, the art would kindle the mind, and pose certain questions and provoke viewers to create answers for themselves. For now, let us say that it could be a journey within.
Of course, I would never forget to experiment with colors, shapes, textures etc. They are the basics to create good art.
Q. Any favorite artists and designers that inspire you?
Oh, music and art has a huge influence on me. I cannot see one without the other. I’ll just list out a few musicians and a few artists.
In Music, My friend AMAN ANAND (plays Deep Progressive House Music), P.O.D., System Of A Down, Mudvayne, Radiohead, Tool (they have been a major influence), Cynic, Animals As Leaders, Mestis, and Tesseract to name a few.
When it comes to Art, Alex Grey, Agnes Cecile, Lora Zombie, Supakitch & Koralie, John Baizley, Pushead, Salvador Dali, Rene Margirette, Christian Cortes, Vartan Malakian and Greg Daly have served as inspiration.
If you’d like to check out my work jam, do check out AMAN’s music at https://soundcloud.com/amansconsciousness
Q. If not art, what do you think you would be doing?
I’d certainly be in music. Maybe even try out for an experimental band or run for Chief Minister. I might not be good at it, but I’d definitely try.
Q. How do you like spending Saturday night?
Painting, socializing or make music. Honestly, mostly painting.
Q. What is your take on the future of art & design?
We are in the Creative Era, and art only gets better. There are so many new platforms and ventures, so many different styles now. It is definitely an explosion of creativity.
Art lovers are bolder and are ready to appreciate new styles & themes. This gives a boost to artists like me to experiment & be creative.
Art is making a revival in India so to say. We were the leaders in many fields, including arts, thousands of years ago. We had a vibrant culture and tradition. But we lost out gradually. Thankfully the new generation is growing towards becoming art lovers. From now on things can only get better.
Q. Why did you choose to work with Concept Nation? How was your experience working with us?
I was referred to Concept Nation by a friend. Initially, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I’m glad I took it up because my journey with Concept Nation has been fantastic. Good response, good publicity and a genuine effort towards supporting art.

Concept Nation’s Artist Interview #7: Artist of the Month
“As I dug deeper, I started to realize that I loved doing this and want to do it for the rest of my life.”

It’s the month of May and that means we’re featuring another artist that made us stop and stare. Meet Vrushali Somavanshi!
After our chat with her, we came to the conclusion that she may be a lady of few words, but who needs words when you can illustrate as insanely good as her? Read further for a sneak peek into the gorgeous artist’s life and scroll straight down to see her amazing artwork. Disclaimer: You’ll Want This on a Tee!
Q. Where did you attend university and how did you stumble upon art?
A: I am currently doing engineering and giving my final semester exams. Art has always been a hobby and something I enjoyed. During my years in college, I began working for the cultural festival which I immersed myself completely in. While designing posters and getting acquainted with design software, I decided to explore further. I also did a short course in Graphic Design simultaneously while pursuing my studies in engineering. As I dug deeper, I started to realize that I loved doing this and want to do it for the rest of my life.
Q. How would you describe your art style as?
A: Currently it’s just what I feel like expressing, sort of similar to a detox. I like patterns a lot as you can see from my designs. Although I do not like to restrict myself to a certain type.
Q. Who are your favorite artists and designers who inspire you?
A: I love Malika Favre, Steve Simpson, Sanna Annukka and Tobias Hall. Among Indian designers, I love Prabha Mallya, Mira Malhotra, Broti Bhattacharya, Gaurav Basu and Sameer Kulavoor’s work.
Q. If not art, what do you think you would be doing?
A: Ah-ha! I’d love to be a singer or a musician. Also I love my Saturday nights watching a good movie on a laptop. So I would do a lot of that.
Q. What is your take on the future of art & design?
A: It is going to get much more relevant than it is now. Futuristic design already is and will continue to help make better products, communication tools and eventually a much better lifestyle for all.
Q. Why did you choose to work with Concept Nation and How was your experience working with us?
A. I liked the whole idea of working with a #Concept, creating groups and showcasing work among other artists. I found it interesting and got curious, hence decided to try it. Here we are today.

Concept Nation’s Artist Interview #6: Artist of the Month
He is happening, never short of cool ideas and all things crazy. Luke Fernandes or ‘Lucid Luke’ is the young designer behind the highly contrasted and vividly psychedelic artwork on Concept Nation. Read on to acquaint yourself with this uber interesting lad.

On his Journey through Art
I studied at Bishop Cotton’s till the 8th grade. I completed my 9th and 10th grade at Ebenezer International, PU at Christ Junior College. I’m currently studying Media and Communication at Christ University (Final Year). Art came to me as a kid, my parents would buy a lot of sketchbooks and crayons from Korea and I would spend hours drawing and doodling, sometimes on the walls which my parents didn’t approve of though hence the sketchbooks.
A Few Words on Luke Art Style
Messy, unorganized, but if it begins to turn out well, I ensure that I refine it to have a satisfying end result. If not, it’s just another doodle added to my archive of drawings either on my phone or on paper. Other times I do reimagining of crazy things I see in a comic book or in movies.
Source of Inspiration and Reflection
Quite literally everyone on Deviant art and Concept Nation, everyone there has incredible talent and so much wow factor, tons of inspiration!
An Alternative Life Choice without Art
I honestly do not know! Well mostly sound and audio productions but art has always been around that I wouldn’t know what else I would be doing.
A Saturday Night in Luke’s Life
Either of two decisions: Stay home and watch tons of TV shows, play Skyrim and watch movies or a night out with friends just to chill like all college kids do, if you know what I mean.
Thoughts on where is Art and Design Headed
Massive, the amount of talented designers keep springing up will prevent the art industry from ever falling off. What’s this world without art? Seriously, it’s everywhere!
Lastly, why choose Concept Nation as a Platform?
I was introduced to Concept Nation by a friend. Since then I realized everyone at Concept Nation is an art enthusiast and always appreciated the designs I come up with!
Most of my designs that I have uploaded are almost completely designed on my dear Samsung Galaxy Note with few touchups done on Adobe Photoshop to add that extract “yeahh” factor, none of which are pre-planned artwork. Huge Marvel Fan here - go team Deadpoo!
Quick preview of Luke’s fascinating ultra cool work follows

Can we be friends? Asked Marsala.

That colour institute you haven't heard about recently released the colour of 2015; and even though its making half of the fashion industry cringe, we love it! Read further to learn about the stunning Marsala.
Mind you, it is remotely close to masala... Did we go too far?

Marsala, The Pantone Colour of the 2015
“A naturally robust and earthy wine red, Marsala enriches our minds, bodies and souls. The impactful, full-bodied qualities of Marsala make for an elegant, grounded statement colour when used on its own or as a strong accent to many other colours. Much like the fortified wine that gives Marsala its name, this tasteful hue embodies the satisfying richness of a fulfilling meal while its grounding red-brown roots emanate a sophisticated, natural earthiness. This hearty, yet stylish tone is universally appealing and translates easily to fashion, beauty, industrial design, home furnishings and interiors.”

The Versatility of Marsala
Equally appealing to men and women, Marsala is a stirring and flavourful shade for apparel and accessories, one that encourages colour creativity and experimentation. Flattering against many skin tones, sultry and subtle Marsala is a great go-to colour for beauty, providing enormous highlight for the cheek, and a captivating pop of colour for nails, shadows lips and hair.
One of the colour's inherent challenges is it’s just not easy to wear and almost has a retro vibe to it. You have to work harder to integrate it into an existing wardrobe and make it look fresh. Pairing it with neutrals such as black, white and grey and metallics such as gold and silver seems to soften the hue, especially when it’s a part of a print or pattern. We’re not seeing as much of marsala in shoes, but it’s a reasonable punctuation of colour in a handbag, on earrings or a necklace when worn against a predominantly grey, black or even navy ensemble. The easiest way to add a little of this reboot of maroon is also the most inexpensive: via a lip or nail colour.

However, there are no rules. The infamous Coco Chanel once said, "The best colour in the whole world is the one that looks good on you."
Can we be friends, asked Marsala? I think we would blend well together!
