Storyboard
This storyboard shows the introduction of the coffee cup character. I decided to include different shot types to show show different rooms for example the birds eye view for showing an empty bedroom as i thought it could give the audience a good idea about how big the rooms are on the ship.

Moodboard
I want to have my final piece be in very static colours with no shading as I feel like this is how I visualize the concept of a characterized coffee cup being, While researching this visual style I remembered a show called Final Space on Netflix which I really enjoyed watching through that used a similar art style to what I inteded to use along with having the setting of a space ship which I also wanted to base my story upon.

Update
So far i’m really enjoying this project as im most interested in 3D work in all regards. With the current situation with the world i’ve found it harder to sit down and be able to do work, along with that some of the 3D models I made were left on the university computers so I was unable to gather them together to get them posted on hear. I’m still lost when it comes to mapping textures and such onto models which is something I hope I can catch up on. With this project I do enjoy having it be open as i’m free to create what I want but it also means I might set myself up for something extremely challenging for my current skill level.

Story Development
For my piece I want to use a similar style of Andy Ristaino in which its more cartoon like and more out there mixing in different environments while using the inspiritation from the imagined story i came up with as i really enjoy the idea of having a cartoonistic coffee cup walking around a made up world with different environments all mixed into one.

Andy Ristaino -
Andy Ristaino is an American artist who is best known as the lead character designer on the animated tv show Adventure Time. I really like his art style as its very out there and strange and allows for alot of wiggle room when it comes to designing things which is how I want my own style to evolve into as it doesnt feel restricted.
Andy Warhol (1928 - 1987) -
Andy Warhol was an American artist, film director and producer who was one of the leading figures in the visual art known as pop art. Pop art has evolved since it started but not in a bad way. it has become more dynamic and vibrant art style. This art style has been used in recent animated movies (Into the spiderverse) which had the majority of the audience loving the art style.
DAAS -
DAAS is originally born in jacksonville Florida, he moved to Japan in 2006 and while being there the influence of the culture helped him develop his unique style pulling inspiration from origami, reflections of colour from the glow of the neon signs and an appreciation for nature. I really like his style of artwork as it’s very geometric like which is an art style I really enjoy.
Modern Architecture -
Modern architecture is very open and let in alot of natural light which almost feels very futuristic by design as they use minimalism in design by only using whites/browns/blacks of colour and having alot of overhangs making it look as though the building its floating. I love this style of architecture as its very confusing to look at but also satisying to see the building almost floating.
Masahiro Sakurai -
Masahiro is a big japanese games designer who is well known for designing the likes of kirby and super smash bros. Sakurai is known to put hard work and love into his projects which shows in the final products being loved by many years after they are released. This is something to be inspired by and look up to for me to tell my self to put my all into a project to get the best possible outcome I can get.
Virgil Ablo -
Virgil is an American fashion designer, artists and entrepreneur who has been the artistic director of Louis Vuitton’s men’s collection since March 2018, He is also the chief executive officer of Off-White, a Milan based label, in which he founded in 2013. Personally i’m not too invested into the fashion industry and don’t often go to big name designer brands for my own clothing but I do enjoy looking at the different collections that release from some streetwear brands as an inspiration for my own style. I personally really like Off-White because as a brand they dont often expand on colours and primarily use black and white. They often add Quotation marks onto words of the items they are collabing with for example “AIR” for the colab with Nike using the Air Force 1′s. Another small but noticable way they stand out is the orange tags on their shoes that you dont actually cut off although i’ve never understood why.

Coffee Cup - Artist Inspired
DASS
Since DAAS is a street artist I imagine this story to be based around him buying a coffee in a local coffee shop and being so intrigued by the unique design of the cup he decided to create a piece of art based around this coffee cup being the centre of the piece, maybe being used as an ad for the coffee shop, and becoming one of his most famous pieces attracting thousands to come see it in person but eventually it gets washed away by weeks of heavy downfall. This then reveals that hidden in the painting was the actual coffee cup he used as inspiration.

Coffee Cup - imagined story
Within this story I imagine the Coffee Cup being an animated object that lives with the main protaganist as a friend/sidekick, he would provide witty comments and help the protagonist solve problems they are facing but never actually join in on the action he would just watch from the sidelines.

Coffe Cup - True story
Coffee cups are seen everywhere in todays society. Whether it’s a couple out in town for the day, someone on their first date or someone grabbing a pick me up before a long shift at work, majority of people have different reasons for having them which is what interests me so much to focus my story on them.

My object that I had chose was a to go coffee cup, as it has an outside, this being it is a regular coffee cup, and an inside, holding the liquid but also being used by many people from different walks of life, it’s a constant within society and you see them everywhere but everyone who has one has a different story.
I wanted to make my coffee cup low poly as It makes it stand out more and feel a little less realistic and in my opinion giving it more character.

In one of our lessons were tasked to model an item that we could see in real life but have no blueprint reference to work off. In the lesson I chose a hammer but had to remodel it recently as I don’t have access to some things I made within university because of the current situation. I did model a hammer but i used a different approach to help me get an idea.
I followed along with a youtube tutorial (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=euS_RlRSlus) which helped me just get more used to adding in supporting bevels to form curved lines and give the object more depth.

Video
tumblr
One of the first things we were asked to create was a bouncing ball within maya. This is one of the more basic animations that you learn as it introduces you to squash and stretch. Unlike traditional animation maya actually works out frames inbetween key frames so you dont have to manually move the ball every frame. You only have to set the main key frames to begin with and then alter/add more frames for when the ball hits the ground to make it squash and when the ball is falling/rising you make the ball thiner to give a realistic look.
EDIT: I’m not sure why the video is in such bad quality and I can’t seem to fix it as I have re-rendered the animation multiple times and it looks fine, it’s only when i upload it onto tumblr it compresses the file making it look pixelated.

With my object for my story being centered around a coffee cup I decided it would be necessary to model a chair for the cafeas this would be included in my story. In order for me to make this I simply made a cube and primarily using the extrude tool setting different ofsets in order to create the legs I successfully made a chair I was happy with. The back of the chair required me to bridge gaps because when I extruded faces that were already present on my model it ended up looking uneven.

Our first more detailed project within this module was to follow along with a powerpoint to learn about different keybinds and the tools provided by maya by creating something simple. This was acheived by starting from a box primitive and using blueprints provided to model half af the helmet using a variety of different tools, and then mirroring what we had made to make the full helmet. From this excersize I learned how to use different tools i had previously not known about, for example the quad draw tool and append to polygon in order to create the visor. While I didn’t apply this to my helmet I also learned that with models you can add supporting bevels which help give the model more depth/ structure.
