On Getting Back At It

When I was eighteen, I somehow wrote a 30-chapter fanfic that's still really well received in the tiny fandom it was written for. It contains some of the greatest plot twists I've ever come up with, and I continued writing it even between taking a break to go to boot camp in between. I took no notes and had no idea where the plot was going when I started.

I have no idea how the fuck I did that, and I'm sure many people who use to be prolific writers when they were younger are in the same boat. It can be very discouraging to know that you'll never get back to that magical place where you produced a 15k words in some sort of highly-caffeinated trance. Eventually we all become that Kevin Perjurer quote.

But oh, it's so worth it to keep trying to recapture that magic. You'll feel it at times (admittedly, inconveniently, like at two in the morning when you snap awake with the thought that fixes your plot hole problem). You'll capture it in fits and starts, and find yourself staring in awe at a paragraph or scene you'll never know how you pulled off.

And when you're ready to share your work, and people will tell you with wonder how great it is and how much they loved it, you'll likely feel like an imposter. Because that shit was hard, damnit, and it's still not the perfect story you knew it could be.

And let me tell you right now, that does not matter. You did it. You created something to the best of your ability, and you sent it out in the world for others to enjoy and feel inspired by. And that, my friends, is worth all the effort in the world.

Mermaid Nezha except he's a koi fish? Gliding through the water of a lake of red lotuses, terribly lonely and horribly bored?

And of course there's oubing because who am I if I don't have them rotating in my head on the regular?

The surrounding residents of Chentang Guan avoid the demon's area, convinced he would strike and consume whoever made even the slightest step closer towards the shore. The only people who ever showed him kindness were the noble Li Family who practically raised him, filling the void that was left when their eldest sons went off on their own spiritual journeys.

(Li Jing hesitated at first. They're both demon slaying generals, so taking care of the demon that allegedly haunted the lake that bordered one of their smaller territories is antithetical to what they've been doing for years now. But all his beloved wife had to do was to pick up the small, chubby, koi toddler of a demon that's gnawing on her hand with baby mer teeth and he's sold on their new son)

Time passes, and mama Yin and Li Jing's koi fry is now a proper merkoi. Though he's been taught to be proper, having been raised on his human parents' morals and stories of both their own lives and his unseen brother's adventures, he's still a bit of a menace. His reputation as the lotus lake's demon hadn't faded one bit in the years he's been raised under Li Jing and Lady Yin, and he hadn't helped the rumors one bit with the occasional scare he'd pull on the locals.

(To the residents' relief, the heads of the Li family always rush to fend the demon off at first word. Little do they know that after "chasing the demon away", Nezha is immediately scolded at the nearest shoreline, and the nearby villagers are mysteriously gifted several tons of fresh fish the very next day)

Ao Bing and Nezha met during one of Ao Bing's travels. Passing through Chentang Guan, the dragon prince, disguised under his cloak, hears whispers about a powerful lake demon that terrorizes the poor locals that live along it's shoreline. Despite the Li Family's efforts, the demon just keeps returning, and from what Ao Bing has heard, the villagers are frankly tired of it.

So, setting off, the dragon prince settles, choosing to stay a short while until he's gotten rid of the demon that haunts the city.

Meanwhile, the lotus prince waits at a faraway shore, just close enough to watch the local children play amongst each other without being seen, wondering how long he'd have to wait for someone to play with him.

3) ALSO why on earth would Ao3 get rid of entire fandoms off the site? Even if they WERE inactive? Who knows if others will be ‘late’ to the fandom and want some fic to read. Who knows if someone wants to come back to their 6 year old account only to find most of their fics deleted.

I’m lucky to be a reasonable adult who has seen tricks like these who also had a very kind person comment their own doubts.
