part of disability rights activism is standing up against fatphobia. fatphobia and ableism are intertwined. fighting against ableism must involve fighting against fatphobia or you will never solve the problem. trying to pluck out individual pieces of the problem will not disassemble the entire structure. we need to break down every last brick including the bricks connected to fatphobia.

if you aren't against fatphobia then you aren't against ableism. if you aren't willing to fight against fatphobia then you aren't a disability activist.

Every day we live is a battle against hunger and the unknown.

Our children go to sleep without milk, Without bread and without food, their tiny bodies weakening from extreme hunger, and the tragedy only grows.

We can’t bear it any longer. This is a painful cry that cannot wait or be ignored.

I'm so g-ddamn tired of hearing people counter asshole northerns essentially celebrating disasters in red states with, "but there are gay people and disabled people and bipoc in these red states, so we should care about them!"

I was one of those people for 34 years of my life. I was a queer, Jewish, trans woman who spent nearly her entire life in Texas. So when I say I don't care if someone is good or bad under my moral compass, everyone deserves to live in safety and security, I mean it.

I want a better world for all PERIOD. No qualifiers, no buts, no ifs.

I will offer my hand to someone who wouldn't off theirs to me. Even if it offers no benefit to me. Even if it works to my detriment. We end up in a society where fascism is possible when we start deciding who is and is not worthy of life.

Anyone who flatly dismisses red states because 54% of the population voted for Trump is an anti-humanist asshole, but countering that with "yes but there's people we like there, too, so let's make sure they live and the bad ones die!" is not much better.

This is the excuse liberals use to justify the genocide in Gaza or the wars with Iraq, Afghanistan, and in this recent ramp up with Iran. "Some of them are homophobic! Or misogynists! Or religious fundamentalists!" I don't care! They still deserve to live! They still deserve safety and security! Denying them aid is still bad!

Maybe I'm a naive bleeding heart, but I'd rather that than open my heart to dehumanization of anyone, even "bad" people.

SUCCESSION (2018—2023)

HEEELPPP a six year old just came into the nature center and she had SO many questions. it's pouring rain and nobody else is here but her family so non-stop for an hour she had my full attention. by the end of it i had half my field guides open to various insects and mammals and birds and she just kept going.

she became extremely fixated on bigfoot and asked about the ways people try to prove its existence until I was explaining DNA to her, and she asked such thoughtful questions! she said, "what if someone found a skull they thought might be bigfoot, and there was hair left over. could we use DNA from hair to prove it's bigfoot?" but before i could answer, she said, "but if you don't have a living bigfoot that you KNOW is bigfoot, to take hair from, how could you know this hair from this dead bigfoot is really bigfoot hair?" !!!! what an awesome question!!

so this 6 year old and i started discussing control groups in scientific studies and she was so engaged!!

then the bigfoot talk led to discussions of extinction which led to dinosaurs, and she said, "what I don't understand is why people say dinosaurs are extinct, but they also say that dinosaurs became birds. how could they all be extinct if they became something else?"

she asked questions that really challenged me in that figuring out how to answer them on the fly in a way that's digestible wasn't totally straightforward.

a few minutes ago, the adult with her said it was time to go and get ice cream and she said, "can't you see I have 1,000 more questions to ask? i have to just bloooowwww them all out now so you don't have to answer them later."

I saw my younger self in her so much LOL. They said they're coming back tomorrow and I said, "I won't be here, but my colleague knows even more than I do!" And she said, "Well, I hope so. He's gonna need to."
