Morrowind posting -
Talking to Vivec:
>murder Nerevar: "We did not murder Nerevar."
I know there's already decades of discussions swirling around this, but there are multiple ways that Vivec can still be technically telling the truth here when the Tribunal killed Nerevar.
(The "Foul Murder" image is VERY COOL but is also extracanonical, from a tenth anniversary post by Michael Kirkbride, and is possibly a more metaphorical explanation of the Nerevarine being reincarnated with a new face, background, and soul, than the literal depiction of the murder.)
We did not murder Nerevar: Only one or two members of the Tribunal dealt the killing blow. Or they ordered the Morag Tong to do the deed. In Vivec's account, years passed in between the Battle at Red Mountain and their ascension, and Nerevar was an old mer (unless magically pickled, like whatever it is the Telvanni do.) It's possible political conflict resulting in Nerevar's death was somehow backed by the Tribunal and they eliminated record of it.
We did not murder Nerevar: They made sure to follow obscure legal definitions at the time in Resdayn that didn't fit the definition of murder, like manslaughter. Not enough witnesses, it was technically unplanned, they can argue Nerevar somehow taunted them or challeneged them to a duel, etc. I've also wondered if they tried to use the Tools without understanding them at first to force him to change his mind, and accidentally deleted Nerevar's body or something.
We did not murder Nerevar: they murdered someone else, and Nerevar was somehow a casualty. They murdered Voryn, and Nerevar got caught in the cross-fire. Or they murdered the healer tending to Nerevar after his fight with Dumac.

Canon Ramblings
This is somewhat inspired by conversations I've had with fellow roleplayers in numerous MMORPGs, as well as ruminating on Kirkbridian ramblings on "TES as Open Source", and a frustration I have with people talking about 'lore'.
I don't necessarily 100% agree with the conception of canon being "open source" per se, but that's because I don't think it goes far enough. Canon, at the end of the day, is a useful shorthand. It's useful for roleplayers, since it gives us a common fiction to work within, and its useful for analysis for the same reason.
But like. What everyone forgets is it's all made up. There is no "more real" lore or canon. "I abide only by lore as written when it comes to Star Wars." Okay. Star Wars isn't real. It's not real! The lore written by a corporation is as real as the lore written by a deranged fanfiction author writing incoherent ships!
And that's not an endorsement to say that said deranged fanficiton is "better" or "good". It's me saying that none of it is real! Don't take it so seriously. I'm tired of me talking about meta-textual themes and concepts in settings, only for people to say "but the LORE says..." That is not an interesting conversation!
The term canon comes from religion, specifically determining the legitimacy of books in the Bible. Apocrypha, in contrast, are books that aren't necessarily heretical, but the church consensus hasn't declared them canon (in contrast to outright heresy, but that's another topic altogether, and the idea of "fiction heresy" is laughable).
But like. Theologians still debate on what the text means. No two priests will 100% agree on what a passage says. Denominations will literally have the same textual writing, and yet have wildly different ideas on what happened or what the text is describing. But if you try to apply this to other conceptions of canon, people take a fundamentalist approach of "it is what it says".
Idk. It's all made up. It's Fake. Canon is useful, but don't use it as a crutch to dismiss meta-textual ideas about a work.

ive been having a bit of a crisis lately about the direction I want to go in my education. I’m an undergraduate pursuing two degrees, BA in linguistics and a BS in math. I have loved linguistics for a long time and I have a penchant for solving problems with numbers patterns and abstract reasoning. I’m considering, because I want to do graduate work and go into research, pursuing a master’s in computational linguistics.
this would, honestly, be perfect. a combination of my love for both of these fields and an opportunity to work with computers. all of these are awesome. I did NACLO (north american computational linguistics open competition) in highschool. not only that, but apparently it’s an incredibly high-demand degree, in a growing field, with lots and lots of opportunities! sounds perfect, right?? uhh well
the only problem is that CL in this day and age is kind of just AI. I think. I want to be proven wrong and find some way to be able to apply my interests and skills in a way that doesn’t benefit from and contribute to what I see as a growing environmental and ethical issue. and I have a more nuanced opinion on AI than just “AI bad,” but I know I would be struggling to resolve the cognitive dissonance I’d face helping prop up billionaire’s pet misinformation machines. not to mention i just think a lot of people pursuing AI might be kind of insufferable to me.
CL is an interesting subfield to me and I probably would have pursued it in a heartbeat a decade ago. do I need to accept that this is what it is? could I forge my own path somehow?
I really don’t know, lol
