I think that in stories with a doppelganger it's infinitely more terrifying when it doesn't kill you but replaces you anyway. All the people you know, family, friends, co-workers, believe that the doppelganger is the real you and the actual you is the imposter. You know that it isn't you but nobody else does. How do you live with that? The desperation knowing that you can't even rely on those closest to you because they have no idea who you are.

thinking about Warren and how in his relationship with “Karen” he feels so uncertain, and his jokes don’t seem to land- he clearly loved her but also was walking on eggshells, and he communicates terribly, and when he apologises for his behaviour it’s in that “saying sorry so u stop being mad at me” kind of way rather than “genuinely apologising for going back to my home town on a whim without telling you” kind of way

But with Gordon, despite the stress and the trauma they’re both under- he tries SO HARD to care for Gordon. And yes a lot of it is born out of guilt but it’s also about love! He gets him a tortoise! He makes fun of him for talking all the time but he also so clearly loves it!! He makes an effort to get to know him and respects when Gordon won’t tell him personal information(because he knows what it’s like to have a past you don’t want to talk about). He comes to Gordon and apologises for his part in their argument. He falls asleep to the sound of Gordon’s memoir. He remembers everything Gordon has ever said to him!

This isn’t going anywhere I just have so many emotions about them and their relationship and I feel like the fact that Warren “memory issues” godby remembering and quoting like everything Gordon says to him is just stupidly sweet
