i couldn’t fit it in but a bonus level is: i hope trump doesn’t die just yet bc it could affect the election/i would like him to experience intense suffering first/it’s fine if trump dies but only if pence does too.

Perhaps we were friends first and lovers second. But then perhaps this is what lovers are.

parasite (a review by keegan)
dir. by bong joon-ho
released on oct. 15 2019 (us)
soooo after i finally got logged back into to my hulu account (yay!!) my first order of business was to watch parasite, of course. and this was the best movie i could have to chosen to watch first. so to start off i’ll say this review has spoilers so be warned. also if you haven’t seen the film then this probably won’t make sense. if you want to understand i’m sure there is a synopsis online.
so the first topic i’d like to mention is da-hye’s innocence. da-hye is the eldest child and daughter of the park family. she is a sophomore in high school. min mentions that he really likes da-hye and when she graduates from high school he will ask her out. it is implied that they have a relationship. when ki-woo began tutoring da-hye they began to have a relationship also. i think this shows da-hye’s innocence and naivety. while this is not a main plot of the movie i think it is very important. a main theme of parasite is the naivety and just ignorance of the upper class. i think in a way bong joon-ho shows that the upper class in a way is like a child. the park family as a whole is very trusting of their workers. they blindly trust them. even in the beginning of the movie mrs. park even says she doesn’t care to see the paperwork that qualifies them.
the second topic is ki-jung’s death. personally, ki-jung was my favorite character. she was such a good liar and was amazing at bs-ing her job. this in a way made me like her more than any other character. her death was so painful. the most stand-out part of the death scene is the fact that no one stayed to help ki-jung who had just been stabbed in the heart. only her family. no one in the upper class cared enough to stay. earlier in the film, mrs. kim said that the these people are nice because their rich, not rich because their nice. these upper class people show that when it comes down to it, they care more about themselves. many people say ki-jung’s death was unnecessary but i think it was absolutely crucial.
the third topic is the ‘smell’. mr. park mentions various times a ‘smell’ that mr. kim has. he says that it crosses the line. he shows that this smell is worse than having a bad driver. i believe this shows that he would choose comfort over safety and work. the commentary on how mr. park thinks that he is better than mr. kim because he smells better is heart-breaking. something as surface level as smell is more important to him than what is inside. and when mr. park grabs his keys from the man who has been living in his basement he covers his nose. this is the final straw for mr. kim. mr. kim then kills mr. park.
the fourth topic is ki-woo’s betrayal to min. min is ki-woo’s rich friend. min turns to ki-woo when he is moving to us for school. he offers his job as da-hye’s tutor. he says that he went to ki-woo because he doesn’t want some rich college kid to take advantage of da-hye. even min thinks that the rich will take advantage of someone. of course, ki-woo does fall for da-hye, betraying min. this shows how ki-woo is willing to do anything for his family and his success.
the fifth and final topic is da-sung’s issues. it is mentioned that da-sung has trauma of seeing a ghost in his house on his birthday. we find out later that this ghost was the old housekeeper’s husband who has been living in the basement for four years. crazy, i know. this shows me that even the working class character who we were supposed to believe would be on the side of the parks is working behind their back. the parks, again, were so trusting of moon-gwang that they let her know more about their own home than they did.
if you’ve gotten this far in the review thank you!!  -keegan

Every day I awoke with the same decision-a decision to let the memory of it destroy me or to fight through it and allow myself peace and joy. Every day, I chose life.
