Level 10 Jester Cosplay (Day 5)
I didn't do a formal post yesterday cause I was starting to get a bit dispirited and frustrated with how long it was taking, but ahhh! The two base layers are now at a wearable point!!!

It looks a little odd in this photo because I haven't finished the waistband yet, but I'm planning on handsewing that on, as it's not done yet.
In hindsight, the straps probably should have been altered to be brought in slightly, as they have the tendency to slip off the shoulders, but I'm planning on pinning them to whatever my underlayer ends up being.
I'm currently erring on not trying to make the overskirt, or at the very least leaving it until after I've made the bag and possibly the gloves, because the outfit is honestly really cute without it.
Plus I'd rather have a bag than another layer XD.
I'm a little nervous about making the gloves but cautiously optimistic about the bag.

This has taken so goddamn long but the large bulk of the embroidery is done. (I know the waistband and armbands need doing but shhhh)

Level 10 Jester Cosplay (Day 3)
I did think I was being vastly optimistic with my timings and what do you know, I was right :')
As I mentioned in the previous post, I had to make an emergency fabric shop trip...and of course I was served by the same lady who served me yesterday. I had to be like...."hi...I ran out of fabric". However I did (hopefully) get all the notions that I needed, and she was lovely about it.
I bought ribbon for the contrast panel sections, as I thought that would be the easiest way of minimising seam bulk and honestly I think it's worked really well. I seamed a narrow red ribbon to two wider white ones to get the center section, and a massively wide black ribbon for the backing. (I draped out the angle on the dress form, which helped massively)
Next I marked out roughly where I wanted the butterfly? shapes to go:

I was hoping the fabric shop would have applique flowers I could just iron/sew on, but nothing that was the right style or shape, so I went with option B, which was hand embroidery.
I would just like to clarify that while I can hand embroider, I dislike it intensely, especially without an embroidery hoop, which, unsurprisingly has vanished into the ether of the house.)
So! Split stitch, my beloathed, which I hate because it's fiddly and takes ages. I genuinely think I watched most of a season of Bridgerton just to do the butterfly section. (Don't judge me, Regé Jean Page is a very attractive man XD).

This is maybe 2 hours work? Maybe an hour and a half.
The crosses were a lot quicker, but because my other half had the audacity to make food and get me to eat it, I lost about an hour of sewing time as well as some of my momentum The bastard/j
This is what I finished today with, a combination of fatigue and a general loss of the will to live meant I figured this was a good stopping point.

However, because I wanted to give myself a false sense of accomplishment, I quickly pinned everything I had so far together to see how it will look.

The bustle side definitely needs taking up, as even hemmed at the moment I think it would be longer than the underdress, while I think the other side wants reshaping slightly. I don't think I remembered to mention yesterday, but the reason I figured out my overskirt pattern was demonstrating to @naia10101 how to wear a cloak a specific way and then realised that was exactly the shape I needed.
I'm going to take the little panel with me to work tomorrow, and I'm hoping I'll maybe be able to sneak a couple of hours in if it's quiet. (Knowing my luck it'll be rammed, but oh well.)

Day 2 Update: I simultaneously got more and less done than I expected, but unfortunately my progress has been somewhat stymied by lack of notions and a fabric shortage. Since I hand dyed the fabric, I'm just going to buy a darker blue for the bottom ruffle and hope it doesn't look too weird.

Successes though:
Underdress is complete bar the bottom ruffle (it was a JOY to use my ruffler foot to get that done)
Bodice is mostly put together, and I'm going to hand sew the armholes after I've had food. Can't progress further without some specific notions so that's a tomorrow problem.
I have draped cut out and pinned the overskirt roughly into shape - I can't really do more until the bottom ruffle sewn onto the underdress, as I want to know the full length first.
Planned out where boning is going to go
Plans for tomorrow:
Emergency fabric shop trip (awkward when I was there today whoops)
Second ruffle and hemming on the underdress
Finish the machine sewing for the overdress
Pattern out and cut the overskirt - planning on doing some of this post food also. Ideally I'd get that and the overskirt done tomorrow but I'm sceptical, though I will have Sunday evening as well.
In an ideal world I'd get all of the garment sewing done this weekend, giving me some of Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights to do the bag and the accessories, plus give my wig some TLC. Annoyingly I don't think I'll get new horns made but we'll see
Damn it's been a WHILE. But to be fair I also haven't cosplayed since 2019 (thanks lockdown/work/other events/hobbies clashing)
But! @coffeegranate is tabling at Sunnycon this year so I wanted to go along and support a friend, and bring something slightly new costumewise
The last time I went to Sunnycon, I cosplayed a slightly half-assed jester from critical role, as I was still living with my partner's family and did not have the space to go into a sewing fugue.
I did upgrade it during lockdown, which I think? I posted here, but I'm not sure how much of it will fit anymore due to weight gain :(

A LOT has changed since then, not least of which is having my own sewing room, but I'm sticking with Jester - though this time attempting her level 10 outfit. I've literally wanted to do this since the art first dropped, and have had my 'jester boots' since I think the December 2018 sales XD
I decided against the coat, as a combination of prohibitive costs and time, and in hindsight I'm glad I did, as I've had the fabric for the rest of it since the beginning of May and I only started doing stuff on Saturday. ("That will be plenty of time!" I said, like a liar).
It's also been 20°C plus here all week so if that holds I don't really want to add a quilted garment to the mix
Admittedly, things like work, side gigs and historical costuming got in the way/took priority, but hyperfocus mode finally got engaged on Saturday and I've been working on dyeing fabric/drafting patterns up until today. The looming deadline of the con being a week away also finally kicked me into action 🙃

This was about 4 hours of work, an hour of which I would say was hand sewing the drawstring channel for the neck. The skirt needs some slight altering and adjustments, so I'm leaving that til tomorrow, but I have the next 2 days off of work, so I'm hopeful that I'll have at the very least layers 1 and 2 finished over the next 2 days, or at least wearable, then working on layer 3 and accessories Sunday - Thursday

you have got to learn how to style your hair and wigs.
I’ve been styling and making wigs, doing hair, and enjoying playing cosmetologist since I was young and I’ve found that it’s saved me so much money and gotten me so much clout within my friend groups. I’m known as the one who can do hair and I take a lot of pride in it, it’s important to know how to do something and know how to do it well and it’s important to take a lot of pride in your work. I have specialised hair, I’m not always able to find a stylist who I trust and I don’t mess around when it comes to my hair and making sure that it looks good, it can be incredibly annoying to have a mishap and have to figure out what to do last minute and it can be a nightmare to take care of wigs and buy them, below are videos on how to make your own wigs, style your wigs, dye your wigs, install your wigs, and care for your wigs so that you have hairstyles that last.
here’s the list.

how to do your own natural looking sew in.
how to clean and wash your lace front wigs.
how to wash your hair underneath your wigs/sew ins.
I’ve also thought of this a lot and I can finally say that I truly believe that while the quality of the hair and the products you use are definitely extremely important, so is the technique you use. You could spend a full $1k on a wig but it wouldn’t look good unless you knew how to pluck and install it, there are plenty of really hot affordable synthetic wigs and synthetic/human hair blend wigs currently on the market, there are ways to install wigs that are simple but still end up making you look like you’re on fire, and there are wigs that are on the more expensive end that just won’t look good if you don’t know how to install them. Knowing how to do your own hair is truly an S-Tier skill, some salons and stylists are so expensive these days that it’s just not feasible to go in every week to have your hair done and it’s great to be able to do your hair whenever you want to and make it look good, you’ll end up saving so much money and exchanging only time, you can learn how to do your own styles, and you can even take all the skills you’ve learned and make a profit from them.
Ligeia.

Hey i’m a fashion design student so i have tons and tons of pdfs and docs with basic sewing techniques, pattern how-tos, and resources for fabric and trims. I’ve compiled it all into a shareable folder for anyone who wants to look into sewing and making their own clothing. I’ll be adding to this folder whenever i come across new resources

Happy Halloween!!! Who better to be than a trickery domain cleric? But man, this is really making me want to do a proper shoot once the costume is 100% done.
I also have some video footage I might post later on in the week, technology depending. 😉
