One of Em's personal knitting projects - 100% silk fine cabled shawl 🌅🌊💛 Chipping away at it bit by bit between orders, this will be an enjoyable luxury work-in-progress for quite some time. . . . #knitting #handmade #cozyhearthyarnworks #knittersofinstagram #wip #silk https://www.instagram.com/p/B1EoZLBptMH/?igshid=1cdrsrc72n5br

Hello, world! Our knitting and designs travel with us everywhere; this prototype knit of a circular shawl pattern has traveled a LOT of miles between stitches. Stay tuned for a new pattern release this fall 🍁☁🍂 #cozyhearthyarnworks #knittersofinstagram (at Indianapolis, Indiana)

Heyo! Chiming in to add my two cents, since I have to deal with hand pain and knitting a lot. I had pre-existing repetitive stress injuries in my hands from my previous career (nerve damage, tendonitis, AND minor arthritis - I got the hat trick!) Knitting has been amazing for me for building back up strength, but YMMV, and the first rule of pain is to listen to it. So, my advice:
- When you start hurting, stop knitting. You’ll eventually get a sense for what kinds of pain are “safe” to push through, but it’s better to be cautious than to do permanent damage.
- I second the recommendation for compression gloves! I don’t use mine much anymore, but they were a lifesaver in early days of knitting. Just be careful to still not knit too long while you’re wearing them - work in smaller chunks to build up strength.
- Stretching is amazing! We Are Knitters made this amazing infographic that targets hand systems, and I’m incredibly fond of this particular stretching video - he targets tendons and carpal tunnel, mostly, but there’s sunlight and birds and he’s got a very calming voice, which helps when you’re half to tears with frustration at your knitting or your hands.
- Change up the size you’re working with regularly. I have multiple WIPs at all times because I have A Problem(TM), but also because it’s easier on my hands to be able to switch frequently between fine lace on US sz 5 needles and a chunky scarf on US sz 13, and everything inbetween. Especially if you’re having any joint pain or stiffness, larger needles are going to be easier on you.
That’s everything I can think of for now, but I am super passionate about hand care and knitting, so I’ll gladly infodump more or answer questions if anyone has them!
- Kit
Every time I knit my wrists hurt really bad after about 20 min any advice? I already stretch and warm up before hand.
Oh no, that stinks! My first instinct was to say stretch/warm up, but you said you already do that. Maybe you could try knitting in a different style (I.e. Try European style if you knit American, or vice versa), although I’m not actually sure if that changes the movement much.Another thing that might help is “creative comfort” gloves. I believe you can find them in chain craft stores, and certainly online (I’ll reblog this ask with the name of the website if I can find it). My mom wears them to help with pain in her hands when she knits for long periods of time, but I think they can also help with wrist pain. I sometimes wear a light ace wrap/brace if my wrists hurt when I’m knitting or crocheting, but these can sometimes restrict mobility. If anyone else has any tips, feel free to add them on!

Oh I miss spending time with golden retrievers!!!!! It’s good to see dog-knitting-buddies out there; we currently only have assistants of the feline persuasion.
Tumblr media
Fiyero is more likely to climb into your lap while you’re knitting and insist your hands should be petting him instead (or, if he’s in a more forgiving mood, he’ll just nap under the WIP hanging off your needles.)
Tumblr media
Isaac, oh the other hand, is more likely to chase yarn balls, investigate your notions tin, and encourage you to get up and stretch your legs every once in a while!

I don’t know how I get any knitting done between #dugthedog and #lilmisschelseabean looking for attention 😂🐾 #goldenretriever #lovemydog #dogsofinstagram #goldenretrieversofinstagram #jennsheelen #jennsheelenpodcast #knit #knitlove #knitters #knitting #knittersofinstagram #knitstagram #instaknit #knittersgonnaknit (at Town of Hingham, MA)

New Steps: Our Etsy Shop
New Steps: Our Etsy Shop
As Em mentioned in yesterday’s post, our Etsy store debuted this week! We’ve been debating the best model for doing custom knit requests for quite some time; the two of us began talking about doing commissioned knitting work sometime in 2015, and I hand-delivered my first commissioned knit piece to a friend in October of that year. It’s been a slow process of refining skills, discussing goals,…

WIP Wednesday: Fire and Ice
WIP Wednesday: Fire and Ice
Kit and I love our local yarn shop: The Yarn Stories. On Knit Nite, I bought some absolutely gorgeous yarn to cast on a project I’ve been anticipating for a long time: yet another pair of long cabled fingerless mitts. I’m working with the Fire and Ice Fingerless Mitts pattern by Roz Harmon, which is both free and well-written! The pattern is adjustable for many sizes. I’m gradually collecting…

I knitted a shawl.
I cannot believe I knitted this.
About 12 years ago, I took up knitting and crocheting after a stay in the psych ward of my local hospital.  At the time, I learned to crochet socks, then got into knitting and did a few hats and stuff.
No way would I have been able to do this.  I was knitting to calm down and this would have been complex and nerve-wracking and not very happy-making.
A dozen years in the future, and this was just a happy knit – fun to do on a trip.
I guess I’m putting it out there to illustrate a couple of points.  The first is that it gets better.  It really, really does.
But also, gently and carefully challenging yourself an itty bitty bit at a time really does kind of add up.
