i've seen usermode anti tampers which reimplement their own syscall table using an undocumented windows feature called Instrumentation Callbacks which hook usermode to kernelmode transitions, i've seen tools made which emulate that same usermode anti tamper's page decryption subroutines to dump the original executable's section pages from disk (since they're normally encrypted and decrypted just-in-time using memory page guards and access violation exception handlers) so many cool ideas and work arounds, i would love to document some of them since so much of it is just tossed around as common knowledge or at risk of being purged from a forum

was working with valgrind the other day trying to see if there was any compiler magic to vectorize std::mismatch calls (there are) but due to the incredible layers of abstraction and templating the std library used the performance while profiling was about 2x as slow compared to just a shitty inlined while loop. why? because in debug builds the 'inlined' versions of mismatch isn't actually inlined, so call grind was recording every single call to mismatch 😭

while it's definitely not the only reason, the proliferation of style-over-performance rules lawyers within C++ is definitely a factor in why I kind of prefer regular C
