I love these two (obviously lol) they’re just fun to write. There’s so much that was unseen during the books that could have occurred and playing with those possibilities and filling in the blanks is so much fun. Writing for them helped me gain confidence with my writing too, so they’ll always have a special place in my heart. I doubt I’d have gone back and worked on any of my older stuff (sw, hp) and posted if the gadge community hadn’t been so supportive and helped me grow as a writer.

OC VALENTINE’S CHALLENGE / DAY FIVE, I NEVER THOUGHT IT WOULD BE YOU (UNEXPECTED LOVE): artemis snow and gale hawthorne from living ghosts
GOING STRICTLY OFF APPEARANCES, everyone in Panem believed that Artemis Snow adored her grandfather. In public, Artemis doted on her grandfather, singing his praises and expressing her admiration for his work as the nation’s president.
Behind closed doors, however (if even due to the severe lack of autonomy within the Capitol), Artemis believed otherwise. She was a smart girl. She could see through her grandfather’s ulterior motives of spending an incredibly large amount of time with his grandchildren, essentially forcing them to spend more time with him versus their own parents in an effort to make his influence primary in their lives.
So, Gale Hawthorne is quite justified in not trusting Artemis’ word when she begs him to take her with him and the rest of the District 13 squad that were sent to liberate the captive Victors. After all, in his mind, she’s posing as some kind of double agent, planning to report her findings on District 13’s operations to her grandfather at the earliest opportunity.
Artemis’ true loyalty is soon proven to the Rebels’ cause and trust is slowly build once she’s assigned to Squad 451. Gale finds himself quite surprised at the sharp divide between “President Snow’s docile granddaughter” and Artemis, and how he, himself, becomes able to separate the two. What takes him by an even greater surprise, however, is that he’s acquired quite a likeness for the latter.

What was the point of making a character like Gale, (poc, loyal, selfless, devoted, dedicated, caring, loving, intelligent, skilled, beautiful, protector of the people, freedom fighter,) and then demonizing his character and his relationships in favor of a white, more palatable character?

“What are we? I mean, really?”
then “It’s better this way.”
gadge prompt for drabble pls!
I did two versions of this, but ended up liking this one more, so here you go. It's kind of a childhood friends!au.
summary: gale hawthorne always wanted to join the army, and now that panem's at war, he sees the perfect opportunity for it. for him, it's almost like a dream come true. almost. because there's one person he doesn't want to leave behind.
word count: 734
It was late, even for Madge Undersee and her midnight reads, to show up at his porch. But then again, it was late for Gale to be outside too. According to his wrist watch, it was 4:38 when he first saw her doll-like silhouette walking towards the house.
A smile took over his face almost immediately, mirroring her own.
It threatened to disappear as soon as the first words came out of her mouth.
- I've been told you're gonna break up with me. - She smirked making her way to the stairs, to sit beside him.
- Who told you that? - He jested, not looking up at her.
He's never telling Katniss anything, ever again.
- A little bird who sings in the meadow. - Madge voiced jokingly, not that he didn't know. She was the only one Gale had talked to about it. - But i do have a question.
- You wanna know if it's true or not.
- I want to know... - She sighed, shifting her weight from one leg to another, then finally sitting down - What are we?
- Madge...
- I mean, really. What are we?
- You're my girl. - Gale blurted out simply. It was the truest thing in his universe, the only way he found to say it.
Because while yes, they kissed, cuddled, and took care of each other when sick, there had never been an official label.
They weren't just friends, that he knew for certain. He looked out for her everyday, and felt a mix of extreme anger and heartbreaking pain whenever she was hurt. She'd come to his house for sunday meals and play with his siblings, help his mom with the dishes. He'd feel jealous when somebody asked her out.
There wasn't a label. She was his girl, and that was it.
- Okay. - Madge answered, a tiny pleased smile in her lips once again. At least she wasn't mad at him - And what does that mean?
- Right now? It means that i love you.
- So why are you breaking up with me? We've never... God, we've never been attached to the boyfriend-girlfriend titles, have we?
True, he thinks to himself, they never seemed right anyway. What he and Madge shared... It was stronger than any kind of stupid title.
- I'm going to the army in two weeks - He says, instead of the thousands of words stuck in his throat, all about how he didn't wanna do it - And I don't want you to wait for me.
- Why?
- I want you to be happy, Princess. I don't want you to hold on to something that'll potentially end terribly. I could die, you know.
- Don't say that. - She whimpered - Don't ever say that.
Madge knew it was gonna happen eventually, of course. They talked about it for years, and she'd always laugh when it was brought up, as if she didn't think he'd actually, voluntarily, go through with it.
It certainly didn't seem funny right now.
- Sorry - He muttered. - I won't say it again.
Madge squeezed her eyes shut, a comum reaction of hers to hold back tears. Gale thought of something else to say, a way to comfort her.
Before he could even open his mouth, she leaned in to kiss him.
His hand found her hair in record time, and she kept pulling him closer and closer. Their mouths felt like a perfect match. He didn't want to go, not if it meant never getting one of those kisses again.
Gale hoped she wouldn't ask him to give up on going, because heavens know he would. He'd do anything for her, burn down the world if she wanted to.
- See, that's what I'm talking about - He smiled weakly when they stopped, still breathless - Your kisses are too good to never be given to anybody else if we don't see each other again.
- And if we do?
If we do, I'll ask you to be my only one.
- If we do, Princess... We'll talk about it then. Okay? It's better this way.
- Okay. - She said, side hugging him. - Can i at least write to you?
She shouldn't, Gale knows she shouldn't. But he doesn't have any logical reasons to explain why, or the strength to deny her possible last wish to him, so he nods.
He's never been religious, but while he's kissing her hair, he prays to come out of the war zone alive, for her.
Because, for the first time, he feels like he has to.

Record Your Experiences
You cannot value the destination if you don’t enjoy the journey. So be aware of how you feel.
Had a test? How did it go? Stayed up late at night to study? How did it feel like to explore the night with the stars? Did you get stuck on some topic?
Just write down why you feel so and update it when you finally understand it. Be the parent of your mind, and treat it like a little child.
Such logs can help you find triggers, reasons for procrastination, hacks to improve your academic and social life, or just to find little joys of daily life.
Romanticize, or keep it minimal and realistic, but do write.
Use these little notes, to make yourself feel something when you begin to study.

Can you elaborate on the issues you take with the way the characters of color are written?
Sure! The most glaring example is the way Thresh and Reaper were written. They are both tributes from District 11, the agricultural district, and they are both described in a way that makes it clear they are black. (already those are iffy connations at best) They are both described as muscular, aggressive, hulking and quiet, and they are also shown to be semi-iliterate, in both the books and movies Thresh talks in broken English, and in Tbosas both District 11 tributes talk that way as well, and are generally portrayed as less civilized and intelligent.
Besides that, there is a constant pattern of characters of color being seen as more angry or aggressive, or more morally “loose” or being put through much more harrowing experiences than their white counterparts. On that note, it is clear that the difference between the Seam and Merchant class in district 12 is one of race, though this is not brought up very much, and is ignored by the fandom at large. Katniss being physically different from her family never seems to be brought up unless it’s to make a comparison between her looks and someone else’s, despite the entire social-economic situation with the Seam. And Katniss’s features are constantly presented as less desirable, and mostly by Katniss herself. Many other characters are shown to point out at one time or another that Katniss is not “particularly pretty,” which is fine, characters are not required to be conventionally attractive, but again, the connations are harmful. In a more random example, in Tbosas again, one of the capitol children is hurt in a rather brutal fashion, and she is also described as a character of color.
Another biggie is how Peeta is constantly described in-text and shown to be “truly good” or “better” than other characters, or possessing more “morals” or “inherent goodness” and more “sweetness and softness” which is also very iffy. At the of MJ, when Katniss thinks of the differences between Peeta and Gale, she says that Peeta (who is white) represents hope and life, and Gale (who is a poc) anger. Which...I understand what the author was trying (key word, trying) to do, but that does not erase the underlying prejudice in that situation, and reads a lot like a white savior trope. That Peeta is white and Gale is not cannot be divorced from that comparison, since it is an integral part of their characters. This applies to Prim as well, she’s is shown to be sweet and good, a bastion of purity and love in Katniss’s life. and she is very clearly described as a...white girl. (now, this not a attack on Prim! I love her! It is simply that underlying or unconscious prejudice went into both her characters and Peeta’s) Another thing is how the people who are extremely marginalized in-story have their more negative and outraged feelings shown to be over-the-top or becoming like the enemy. (see Gale and Katniss as examples of this, and the way Peeta’s diplomacy and subterfuge is praised, while more aggressive tactics are not.) There’s a lot more, but these are just the major examples.

“Here, mom,” he says, and takes her washtub from her, tucking easily to his hip. Her hands free, Hazelle pats them against her well-worn apron and eyes her eldest son. So much like his father, this one. In looks at least, his brooding, rather pensive nature at times he gets from her. He brings the tub into the porch as the rain starts to lightly patter down, hauling the basket of wash in after at. Hazel crouches, stirring the soapy water with one hand. The porch is sturdy under her weight, it doesn’t creak and groan as ominously as it had days before. The fresh planks and shiny nails had been a surprise, but a welcome one, and Gale had spent the rest of an evening showing the boys how to lay in the new section of floor, with Posy hovering on the edges, holding the nails in her tightly clutched fists, ready to hand them off at a moment’s notice. She doesn’t ask how he got the nails or wood. Two, three, four years prior she may have had the privilege of worrying, but not now. It’s him as much as her who keeps the children fed and clothed now, and she won’t do him the disservice of meaningless concern. He crouches by her, feeding some clothes into the swirling suds, and leans forward, pitching his voice conspiratorially. “I think I have a way to get a bit extra food in.” It would be good news, if her heart didn’t hammer in her chest at the words. There are very little ways to get “extra” here in Twelve, and among those slim options are many, many unsavory things. He might see something in her expression, because he hurries on. “I met someone in the woods. Little scrap of a girl, but she has some weapons on her, knows how to hunt. I’m teaching her traps, we got two rabbits more than I usually get last week.” Oh. That’s unexpected, but relief consumes Hazelle right down to her toes, her curiosity secondary. She adds another dash of soap atop the floating shirts, considers. “Weapons?” “Bow and arrow.” Gale rolls his sleeves up, plunges his hands in the opaque water and begins vigorously rubbing. “Think about it, I might be able to get a deer.” Deer. She hasn’t - or any of them - had venison in a long time. “Be careful.” she says. It all she can say. Whoever girl is, she will trust it to Gale. She won’t even question him further, he’ll talk when he wants. He gives her a half-smile through the hair that’s falling over his face, bubbles dotting his forearms. If she squints, it’s his father grinning at her, teasing and alive. She can’t lose him too. She can’t lose her boy, to the mines or to something worse. “Be careful,” she repeats. He will, she knows. He’s not in any way unaware of the dangers, the odds stacked against them. “I will, mom.” he promises quietly, eyes flicking up to hers, as grey as the world around them. The next moment he sloshes water of the edge of the tub, breaking the tension, and Hazelle is unable to help a choked laugh. “I have a dress to bleach for a wedding next week, they’re paying a bit more if I finish by tomorrow,” she confides. He’s not the only one that can pull in extra. “Hm.” He’s working a glob of dust off a shirtfront, and she can see him tallying in his head. “We might be able to get something for Posy’s birthday after all then.” Or for you, she wants to add, but only nods. Maybe someday will come a time and place when she doesn’t have to worry, when her boy will get all that he deserves. 🏹 🌲 🎅 Gale Secret Santa 2021 prompt for @warriorlid14 - Gale- centric drabble. 🏹🌲 🎅 Rating: Teen
