24 Invaluable Skills To Learn For Free Online This Year

Here’s an easy resolution: This stuff is all free as long as you have access to a computer, and the skills you learn will be invaluable in your career, and/or life in general. 

1. Become awesome at Excel.

Chandoo is one of many gracious Excel experts who wants to share their knowledge with the world. Excel excellence is one of those skills that will improve your chances of getting a good job instantly, and it will continue to prove invaluable over the course of your career. What are you waiting for?

2. Learn how to code.

Perhaps no other skill you can learn for free online has as much potential to lead to a lucrative career. Want to build a site for your startup? Want to build the next big app? Want to get hired at a place like BuzzFeed? You should learn to code. There are a lot of places that offer free or cheap online coding tutorials, but I recommend Code Academy for their breadth and innovative program. If you want to try a more traditional route, Harvard offers its excellent Introduction to Computer Science course online for free.

3. Make a dynamic website.

You could use a pre-existing template or blogging service, or you could learn Ruby on Rails and probably change your life forever. Here’s an extremely helpful long list of free Ruby learning tools that includes everything from Rails for Zombies to Learn Ruby The Hard Way. Go! Ruby! Some basic programming experience, like one of the courses above, might be helpful (but not necessarily required if you’re patient with yourself).

4. Learn to make a mobile game.

If you’re not interested in coding anything other than fun game apps, you could trythis course from the University of Reading. It promises to teach you how to build a game in Java, even if you don’t have programming experience! If you want to make a truly great game, you might want to read/listen up on Game Theory first.

5. Start reading faster.

Spreeder is a free online program that will improve your reading skill and comprehension no matter how old you are. With enough practice, you could learn to double, triple, or even quadruple the speed at which you read passages currently, which is basically like adding years to your life.

6. Learn a language!

With Duolingo, you can learn Spanish, French, Portuguese, Italian, or English (from any of the above or more). There’s a mobile app and a website, and the extensive courses are completely free.

7. Pickle your own vegetables.

Tired of your farmer’s market haul going bad before you use it all? Or do you just love tangy pickled veggies? You too can pickle like a pro thanks to SkillShare and Travis Grillo.

8. Improve your public speaking skills.

You can take the University of Washington’s Intro to Public Speaking for free online. Once you learn a few tricks of the trade, you’ll be able to go into situations like being asked to present at a company meeting or giving a presentation in class without nearly as much fear and loathing.

9. Get a basic handle of statistics.

UC Berkeley put a stats intro class on iTunes. Once you know how to understand the numbers yourself, you’ll never read a biased “news” article the same way again — 100% of authors of this post agree!

10. Understand basic psychology.

Knowing the basics of psych will bring context to your understanding of yourself, the dynamics of your family and friendships, what’s really going on with your coworkers, and the woes and wonders of society in general. Yale University has its Intro to Psychology lectures online for free.

11. Make your own music.

Step one: Learn how to play guitar: Justin Guitar is a fine and free place to start learning chords and the basic skills you’ll need to be able to play guitar — from there, it’s up to you, but once you know the basics, just looking up tabs for your favorite songs and learning them on your own is how many young guitar players get their start (plus it’s an excellent party trick).

Step two: A delightful free voice lesson from Berklee College Of Music.

Step three: Have you always thought you had an inner TSwift? Berklee College of Music offers an Introduction to Songwriting course completely for free online. The course is six weeks long, and by the end of the lesson you’ll have at least one completed song.

Step four: Lifehacker’s basics of music production will help you put it all together once you have the skills down! You’ll be recording your own music, ready to share with your valentine or the entire world, in no time!

12. Learn to negotiate.

Let Stanford’s Stan Christensen explain how to negotiate in business and your personal life, managing relationships for your personal gain and not letting yourself be steamrolled. There are a lot of football metaphors and it’s great.

13. Stop hating math.

If you struggled with math throughout school and now have trouble applying it in real-world situations when it crops up, try Saylor.org’s Real World Math course. It will reteach you basic math skills as they apply IRL. Very helpful!

14. Start drawing!

All kids draw — so why do we become so afraid of it as adults? Everyone should feel comfortable with a sketchbook and pencil, and sketching is a wonderful way to express your creativity. DrawSpace is a great place to start. (I also highly recommend the book Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain if you can drop a few dollars for a used copy.)

15. Make your own animated GIF.

BuzzFeed’s own Katie Notopoulos has a great, simple guide to making an animated GIF without Photoshop. This is all you need to be the king or queen of Tumblr or your favorite email chains.

16. Appreciate jazz.

Have you never really “gotten” jazz? If you want to be able to participate in conversations at fancy parties and/or just add some context to your appreciation of all music, try this free online course from UT Austin.

17. Write well.

Macalester College’s lecture series is excellent. If you’re more interested in journalism, try Wikiversity’s course selection.

18. Get better at using Photoshop.

Another invaluable skill that will get you places in your career, learning Photoshop can be as fun as watching the hilarious videos on You Suck At Photoshop or as serious as this extensive Udemy training course (focused on photo retouching).

19. Take decent pictures.

Lifehacker’s basics of photography might be a good place to start. Learn how your camera works, the basic of composition, and editing images in post-production. If you finish that and you’re not sure what to do next, here’s a short course on displaying and sharing your digital photographs.

20. Learn to knit.

Instructables has a great course by a woman who is herself an online-taught knitter. You’ll be making baby hats and cute scarves before this winter’s over!

21. Get started with investing in stocks.

If you are lucky enough to have a regular income, you should start learning about savings and investment now. Investopedia has a ton of online resources, including this free stocks basics course. Invest away!

22. Clean your house in a short amount of time.

Unf$#k Your Habitat has a great emergency cleaning guide for when your mother-in-law springs a surprise visit on you. While you’re over there, the entire blog is good for getting organized and clean in the long term, not just in “emergencies.” You’ll be happier for it.

23. Start practicing yoga.

Most cities have free community classes (try just searching Google or inquiring at your local yoga studio), or if you’re more comfortable trying yoga at home, YogaGlohas a great 15-day trial and Yome is a compendium of 100% free yoga videos. If you’re already familiar with basic yoga positions but you need an easy way to practice at home, I recommend YogaTailor’s free trial as well.

24. Tie your shoelaces more efficiently.

It’s simple and just imagine the minutes of your life you’ll save!

The guide to college snacks (microwave edition)

So I leave for college in T-minus two days and in preparation for the big changes I’ve been compiling a small collection of food I can make in my dorm with only a microwave, a mini fridge, a couple ingredients, and a paper plate or bowl. 

Oatmeal

2 parts water to 1 part oats in a paper bowl popped in the microwave until it starts to bubble is super easy. I don’t really enjoy it plain, so if I have it, I sometimes add a little honey, cinnamon, brown sugar, or maple syrup to sweeten it up. (You could add literally anything…you could throw in a handful of chocolate chips if that’s your style). You can also buy the pre-made packets but they cost a bit more and don’t last as long as just the plain container of oats you can get.

Cinnamon Apples

Cut an apple (maybe you stole it from the dining hall, I won’t tell) into smaller chunks. It’s not science, just something bite-sized. Throw it in a microwave-safe container with a lid along with as much cinnamon and sugar as you fancy and a splash of water. I cook mine for about two minutes with the lid tilted sideways so its covered but still vents. You might have to cook it more if you like em’ mushy and you’re using one of those older dingy college microwaves or less if you prefer them a little on the crunchy side. 

Egg

This one’s a little difficult because if you live in a dorm, how or why are you gonna keep eggs in your fridge. But if you happen to have one egg on hand, I guess this one is for you. So I just crack an egg into a microwave safe bowl (paper bowls are cheap and you don’t have to wash them afterwards). Add a little cheese if you have some, or maybe salt or pepper.  I haven’t figured out the perfect cooking time yet but anywhere between 1-2 minutes will get you a cooked scrambled egg.

Pasta (Mac and Cheese anyone?)

A box of noodles at the store isn’t too expensive and can feed you at least three times I hope. They also have a fairly long shelf life I think (I mean I’m gonna use that box to it’s full potential even if it takes me a month). All you gotta do is throw some noodles in a microwave safe bowl and cover them with water. Then check the box and cook them for as long as it recommends plus 3 extra minutes. Watch it so it doesn’t boil over  or put a paper plate or bigger bowl underneath the pasta boil to catch any water. Drain the water and add sauce, cheese, vegetables, oil, or spices…or just eat it plain if you’re a broke college kid like me.

Quesadilla 

This is the lamest excuse of a quesadilla but are we really gonna complain? Like this is not your pretentious five course meal, THIS IS SOMETHING TO GET BY ON PEOPLE. Basically just put a tortilla on a plate or napkin, top it with cheese, and if you have anything else on hand (you lucky duck), add it in there too. Finish with another tortilla and 45 seconds or so in the microwave and that kiddo is ready to eat.

(sad) Pizza

If you still got tortillas from those amazing quesadillas, mix it up a little and make pizza instead. Sauce could be hard to come by, but maybe one day your dining hall has marinara dipping sauce for something and you may or may not have snuck some out for this purpose only. If you somehow did this (or already have some kind of tomato sauce), pop a tortilla on a plate cover with sauce and as much cheese as you see fit and put it in the microwave until that cheese looks melty. Good luck eating it…but they do taste okay regardless of the fact that they’re impossible to pick up easily. Maybe roll it up and make it more of a pizza taco.

that’s all I can think of right now but I’m working on another set of these that doesn’t require a microwave. Good luck my little chefs.

How to Create a Language Learning Schedule (+ Printable)

I recently set up a new language learning schedule for myself and I thought some of you might find my approach useful, so I decided to create a short guide and a printable (you can download it as a pdf here). Lots of people struggle with finding a way to study several languages at once (I do, too, as I’m currently learning 5 languages) and I think having a good plan is essential!

As you can see, it’s quite simple. Once you have downloaded the printable, you can create a perfect schedule for yourself in a few easy steps:

1. Define your goals

First of all, you should know why you need this schedule and for how long you want to stick with it. Do you want to plan your studies for next week, the next month or the entire term or (school) year? What exactly do you want to learn until the end of that time period? How many words, how many grammar topics, how many levels in your favorite language learning app? You need to answer these questions in order to be able to estimate how much time you should / can / want to spend on your target languages every day.

2. List your languages and resources

Secondly, you should make a list in which you mention the resources, methods and tools you want to use for each language. It should look something like this (the more detailed, the better):

There are a few things you should consider before creating the actual schedule:

How much work and time do you need to put in to reach your goals?

How much time do you actually have in a normal week? When do you want to study?

Are all of your target languages equally important? How often do you want to study language 1,2,3,…?

Do you have any classes that you have to prepare for / do homework for? If yes, you can include that in your schedule!

Do you want to avoid studying two similar languages in one day?

Do you want to focus on a special skill?

5. Set up your schedule!

Goals, resources, time management - you’re ready to make a detailed plan! Here is a random example:

In case you were wondering “why do the whole coloring thing and list your resources and everything” - I think this is a way to avoid procrastination. Let’s say it’s Friday, so you should be learning French vocab (orange) and practise listening (green) in Spanish. Now, if you never made a list with all your resources, you might end up wasting your time on tumblr or google searching for “Spanish listening practice” and reading arbitrary posts or watching videos you already know without really doing anything because you just don’t know what to do. If you consider your list, you will know that for Spanish, you will either have to watch a movie or listen to some music, and for French, you will have to do either Memrise or Anki. As I said before, this gets easier if your list is more detailed. Actual tasks like “watch a movie on website x about y with subtitles in language z” will force you to work with what you’ve got and use the methods and resources you already know. I read so many posts like “I keep downloading textbooks for that language but I never use any of them, I just keep downloading more” and this won’t happen to you if you use the list!

memorization tips!

use mnemonics! this is what i’ve been using to learn vocabulary since day 1, it makes language learning so much more fun + easier. here is a good explanation of what mnemonics do.

use a spaced repetition system like anki which has been proven to basically be the best way to learn vocabulary for a second/third language!!

here’s a super useful introduction to different memory techniques!

make a schedule - memorizing something once won’t make it stick, you have to commit to revision

if you decide not to use anki/other spaced repetition software, set time-based targets for what you want to achieve! 

+ flashcards insp if you want to make flashcards

@studyign‘s amazing alternative to flashcards method that works miracles for anything to do with memorization

study tips:

set a target of at least 5 mins a day either reviewing past content or learning something simple with some of the apps listed above!

keep a “messy tips book” to note down any interesting information you come across on your language-learning journey/any questions you want to ask + write the answers down to later!

keep a “grammar book” - add to this as you go and it will probably help you a lot later on for revision and reference!

a phrasebook MAY be a worthy investment if you are ready to commit to actively learning from the book and make sure you’re not going to buy it to just let it sit there and collect dust

stick to one course/book at a time. there is a huge temptation to start 43 different courses at once, but this distracts you from focusing on completing + mastering the content!

immerse yourself in the language by getting into that culture’s tv shows, music, etc. you’ll probably pick stuff up along the way!

motivation for when the going gets tough:

think about being able to watch tv shows in the language without subs

have secret convos with your language friends

be able to travel to that country and get around no problem

imagine being mistaken for a native speaker!!

being able to say “i self-learned ____!”

learning more languages opens up a lot more career options + makes you more in demand in the workplace!

“Through a rapist’s eyes. A group of rapists and date rapists in prison were interview…ed on what they look for in a potential victim and here are some interesting facts:

1] The first thing men look for in a potential victim is hairstyle. They are most likely to go after a woman with a ponytail, bun! , braid, or other hairstyle that can easily be grabbed. They are also likely to go after a woman with long hair. Women with short hair are not common targets.

2] The second thing men look for is clothing. They will look for women who’s clothing is easy to remove quickly. Many of them carry scissors around to cut clothing.

3] They also look for women using their cell phone, searching through their purse or doing other activities while walking because they are off guard and can be easily overpowered.

4] The number one place women are abducted from / attacked at is grocery store parking lots.

5] Number two is office parking lots/garages.

6] Number three is public restrooms.

7] The thing about these men is that they are looking to grab a woman and quickly move her to a second location where they don’t have to worry about getting caught.

8] If you put up any kind of a fight at all, they get discouraged because it only takes a minute or two for them to realize that going after you isn’t worth it because it will be time-consuming.

9] These men said they would not pick on women who have umbrellas,or other similar objects that can be used from a distance, in their hands.

10] Keys are not a deterrent because you have to get really close to the attacker to use them as a weapon. So, the idea is to convince these guys you’re not worth it.

POINTS THAT WE SHOULD REMEMBER:

1] If someone is following behind you on a street or in a garage or with you in an elevator or stairwell, look them in the face and ask them a question, like what time is it, or make general small talk: can’t believe it is so cold out here, we’re in for a bad winter. Now that you’ve seen their faces and could identify them in a line- up, you lose appeal as a target.

2] If someone is coming toward you, hold out your hands in front of you and yell Stop or Stay back! Most of the rapists this man talked to said they’d leave a woman alone if she yelled or showed that she would not be afraid to fight back. Again, they are looking for an EASY target.

3] If you carry pepper spray (this instructor was a huge advocate of it and carries it with him wherever he goes,) yelling I HAVE PEPPER SPRAY and holding it out will be a deterrent.

4] If someone grabs you, you can’t beat them with strength but you can do it by outsmarting them. If you are grabbed around the waist from behind, pinch the attacker either under the arm between the elbow and armpit or in the upper inner thigh – HARD. One woman in a class this guy taught told him she used the underarm pinch on a guy who was trying to date rape her and was so upset she broke through the skin and tore out muscle strands the guy needed stitches. Try pinching yourself in those places as hard as you can stand it; it really hurts.

5] After the initial hit, always go for the groin. I know from a particularly unfortunate experience that if you slap a guy’s parts it is extremely painful. You might think that you’ll anger the guy and make him want to hurt you more, but the thing these rapists told our instructor is that they want a woman who will not cause him a lot of trouble. Start causing trouble, and he’s out of there.

6] When the guy puts his hands up to you, grab his first two fingers and bend them back as far as possible with as much pressure pushing down on them as possible. The instructor did it to me without using much pressure, and I ended up on my knees and both knuckles cracked audibly.

7] Of course the things we always hear still apply. Always be aware of your surroundings, take someone with you if you can and if you see any odd behavior, don’t dismiss it, go with your instincts. You may feel little silly at the time, but you’d feel much worse if the guy really was trouble.

FINALLY, PLEASE REMEMBER THESE AS WELL ….

1. Tip from Tae Kwon Do: The elbow is the strongest point on your body. If you are close enough to use it, do it.

2. Learned this from a tourist guide to New Orleans : if a robber asks for your wallet and/or purse, DO NOT HAND IT TO HIM. Toss it away from you…. chances are that he is more interested in your wallet and/or purse than you and he will go for the wallet/purse. RUN LIKE MAD IN THE OTHER DIRECTION!

3. If you are ever thrown into the trunk of a car: Kick out the back tail lights and stick your arm out the hole and start waving like crazy. The driver won’t see you but everybody else will. This has saved lives.

4. Women have a tendency to get into their cars after shopping,eating, working, etc., and just sit (doing their checkbook, or making a list, etc. DON’T DO THIS! The predator will be watching you, and this is the perfect opportunity for him to get in on the passenger side,put a gun to your head, and tell you where to go. AS SOON AS YOU CLOSE the DOORS , LEAVE.

5. A few notes about getting into your car in a parking lot, or parking garage:

a. Be aware: look around your car as someone may be hiding at the passenger side , peek into your car, inside the passenger side floor, and in the back seat. ( DO THIS TOO BEFORE RIDING A TAXI CAB) .

b. If you are parked next to a big van, enter your car from the passenger door. Most serial killers attack their victims by pulling them into their vans while the women are attempting to get into their cars.

c. Look at the car parked on the driver’s side of your vehicle, and the passenger side. If a male is sitting alone in the seat nearest your car, you may want to walk back into the mall, or work, and get a guard/policeman to walk you back out. IT IS ALWAYS BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY. (And better paranoid than dead.)

6. ALWAYS take the elevator instead of the stairs. (Stairwells are horrible places to be alone and the perfect crime spot).

7. If the predator has a gun and you are not under his control, ALWAYS RUN! The predator will only hit you (a running target) 4 in 100 times; And even then, it most likely WILL NOT be a vital organ. RUN!

He walked with a cane, or a limp, and often asked “for help” into his vehicle or with his vehicle, which is when he abducted his next victim.
