The animators survival kit:
This is a book I read back in college when getting my animation and film diploma and I thought it would be good for this assignment as I’ve looked into a lot of animation and it was very relevant.
Written by Richard Williams this book set the basic rules of animation and how to create lifelike movement. This is something I would intentionally break to create an uncomfortable aesthetic for my piece.
Something such as a walk cycle would stay the same however I could experiment with such a basic concept. Strangely large legs that require a much larger turning circle would definitely look strange enough to be featured in a dark animation.

Something in photography that I have been interested by is Projected Image.
Projected image is when a photographer places an image over the top of their subject. The most popular method of doing this is a digital projector. I feel experimenting with projected image can give some great abstract portraits and can give some stunning effects

This photo I believe is incredible and not made through a strange technique instead made with a very particular camera.
This photo is made with a pinhole camera. A pinhole camera is simply a camera without a lens. It instead has a very small aperture. This essentially makes it a light proof box with a small hole that allows light to pass through printing onto the film creating a photo.
This piece of film has 1175 hours of exposure on it of the moons path according to Anthony Carr, the photographer.

This photo instantly grabbed my attention not only due to the great detail of the image but the strange nature. At first glance I thought it was just a black and white photo however delving deeper into the details and researching the photo I found it was a printed X-ray of a crab. Printed by Remy Whiting and X-rayed by radiologist Amy Spalding. The crab was kept very cold and chilled so they were safe enough to handle and be xrayed leading to this great interesting photograph that experimented with X-rays which I’ve never seen experimented with before

Photography 7: this photo is taken by using a popular experimental technique called intentional motion blur. The photographer when taking the photo would move or shake their camera when using a longer shutter to capture the blur.
This photo was taken by Gerry McCulloch and to create this photo he dropped his camera slightly while when the shutter opened to create the blur and while moving it down also zoomed out slightly to create not just a blur but almost two seperate images lay over one another.
I think intentional motion blur is very interesting as the photo can tell a story and you can still figure out what the story of the frame is

Photography 6:
This photo was taken by Jodie Blackwell in an attempt to make a dream sequence style photo of a landscape. This is interesting as not many photos I’ve seen resemble dreams as much as some films do. I think this is because films have a much wider array of effects and things to do to show this dream implication that Blackwell was aiming for.
To do this photo she experimented with light leaks by allowing extra light to seep into the lens ans the film creating the abstract colours blending in from the sides. To do this one inparticularly Jodie Blackwell used expired film and opening the film back for a second after taking the photo allowing all the light to get into the frame.
I like this photo and I think it’s done very well by experimenting with the camera components

Photography 5:
I really like this photo, from photographer Anna Rocchi. She explained in a post that she has a lot of interest in the urban landscape and the visual patterns it can make using buildings and people. This photo she said was made by exposing a photo twice using negative space and reversing the film in her darkroom. I think this is very interesting and I also think it would be very easy to achieve a very similar effect in something like photoshop or light room. Not to take away from the old school film charm of Rocchi’s photo however I think a more modern take could even be a significant upgrade to this piece

Photography 4:
This photo is an X-ray if a computers memory card but also featuring human body parts such as a human nose and human ear. This is very strange and looks as though it could it could be a 3D model or cgi due to the amazing quality of the photo. The contrast between man and machine is something that’s very interesting and has been done so well and this is no exception. Something even stranger about this piece is that it was commissioned by a hospital and hung up there to this day. I’m not sure what correlation a hospital has with this piece and why it would pay for it but I think this only makes the piece more interesting as it adds to the current confusion I already have surrounding this photo.

Photography 3:
The photographer Odette England creates chromogenic colour prints in a dark room using family portraits. She shoots on vintage film. These together make the photos immaculate however she then uses sandpaper or different variations and sizes to sand shapes and patterns into the print creating a very strange look. I find this interesting as it is such a long process to go through to make it look purposefully ruined. Something about the scratchy look of the print scares me reminiscent of something you would see in a horror film or game

This photographer, Robin Cracknell creates great experimental photos using his own very specific methods.
For this photo of his son he shot with an old camera, expired film and also printed through some kind of transparent or semi transparent material like cling film or broken glass and then later bleached the film.
These make for a very unique look by him experimenting with different printing techniques to create something totally original and new

Photography 1: this photo is from my friend @DruePhoto and I feel it would fit nicely into my experimental film blog.
For this photo he used a macro lens to really show the most delicate details in this photo of someone licking a glass shower cover.
I feel this photo is very experimental not only to the nature of the subject but the focus is on the glass and not the tongue pressed up against it. It’s close enough to be able to tell what it obviously is however the clarity is not high enough in the face to be able to see features as clear as it is on the glass

I’m OK: I’m OK is a great stop motion experimental animation made from paintings. This is something I’ve never seen or thought about before and I think it’s mesmerising! Each painting unique yet so relevant and pivotal in the storytelling of a young man having flashbacks and vivid memories (while being carried out of war in a stretcher)of his life before enlisting in the army. This film not only shows perfect editing and stunning visuals in a way I’ve never seen before but also how sometimes memories and emotion is just as big a war with yourself, as you are in with others.

Into The Flame: Into The Flame is a short animation with a very unique art style that I love! I wasn’t able to find a link for the full version but this is a link for a small trailer of the film. A man who’s wife has disappeared is sat alone at his kitchen table when a moth lands in his ear. He then walks to a bar and as his night continues he begins to have visions of moths and moths chasing him in waves of hundreds as he runs naked through a large white plain.
The art style and editing of this film are very unique and I feel editing an animation with such great transitions is very hard to do from personal experience and hard to come across from viewing experience. The colours in this film are either very monochrome or very warm colours possibly signifying the flame and the personification of the moth

EGG: EGG is one of the strangest experimental films I’ve seen. It is an animation about a girl with anorexia and her personal challenge to eat an egg. For her this is a massive milestone and a very delicate subject and I think this animation has done a perfect job of representing the feelings the character would have.
The character can be seen quite graphically as they are wearing nothing however the low detail isn’t enough to make it too mature. The animation is made through a lot of geometric shapes that can sometimes resemble cages and traps the character is stuck within and the characters limbs stretch out drastically as she disforms her body into something unrealistic.
The entire animation is black and white and the way shadows are used in this monochromatic animation blow me away!
I think animation has a significant way to create unnaturalism and this animation does it perfectly.

The Distraction: The Distraction, directed by Matty Brown is a short film about living with anxiety and depression. This film is phenomenal. The camera shots and cinematography are inspiring and the end of the film really highlights this as the lighting is done in such a way that the main character looks as though she begins to sink into surrounding darkness and then many colours flash symbolising her suffering from a mental attack. The lighting and camera movement is so prestine and well thought out you begin to feel such empathy for the character and she begins to be swallowed by her own thoughts into black. The films using of lighting and editing throughout makes it very experimental putting together the pieces of the characters personality and I’d strongly recommend the watch

Sounds good: sounds good is a very odd experimental animation about the sound of mushrooms. Sander Joon Is the director of this strange short film about a boom mic operator wanting to show the sound of mushrooms. There is a lot of strange imagery in this film through animation however the stand out aspect of this film is the sound. The sound is simply unexplainable as it intrigues and makes me very uncomfortable at the same time with some of the odd noises that it contains.

Peripheria: Peripheria is a short film. It is a short 2D animation that looks very flat much like concept art but the amazing textures really bring it to life. There are many different shading techniques that give Peripheria such a beautiful aesthetic whilst being about something so minimalist and slow. The short film features a group of stray dogs wandering around deserted buildings and urban locations for around 12 minutes. The last building sees all of its light disappear as it is demolished and crumbled to the ground shortly after we are just two white eyes standing out in the darkness.
I believe this film falls into slow cinema as there is no particularly stand out narrative and is very repetitive which some viewers may find boring.
However, I very much enjoyed this film as I could not stop staring at the different pieces of art in which the dogs walk through and it kept it very fun and fresh for me to watch
