Mass post of my art for the dnd campaign my party going through rn! (Pardon the incorrect tags I changed my user on here)

The plague doctor is me, Bella is my sister’s pc, and the samurai (Shinobu) is another members pc. We haven’t done much in the campaign just yet but I really love the characters (especially mine since plague doctors are one of my special interests :>) It’s set in a fantasy Italy around 1300s and a plague just broke out! Oh noes! (Also the Doctor isn’t technically immune, I wrote that part before I passed it by the DM. They’re immune to the initial outbreak, but our plague is a mash of different viruses, akin to a theory about the real Black Death)

The thing is that any time a mascot horror is like "and then they made this terrifying toy that turned evil" or "look at this theme park and also it was evil" and you're like no one would actually have ever genuinely made a toy that terrifying, that's stupid. There's always something crazier in real life.jme walt Disney genuinely wanted to build an entire city under a giant dome where he controlled even what appliances people used in their homes. Disney DOES have an entire "city" of underground tunnels under one of the parks. They made SO many baby dolls who's entire function was being able to cry. There's a doll made to eat that had actual gears in it that genuinely chopped up kids fingers and put them in the hospital. Transformers made toys who's entire gimmick is that they can make sparks like a lighter and they did in fact set things on fire. The Shrek McDonald's glasses had lead in them. Kids chemistry kits used to come with uranium. VTech made a toy that secretly and illegally collected data from 6+ million children and that system got hacked. You used to be able to go to McDonald's in neopets. An episode of Pokemon caused hundreds of children to have seizures in Japan. Honestly whatever fucked up thing you put in your mascot horror game, there's probably something more insane that happened in real life, but the real thing is equally as unbelievable. it breaks immersion in, like, real life. "Really? This company released a toy that ended up killing a bunch of children and they paid people off to cover it up? Sure" that's happened in real life like, several times

I don't think I've ever talked about how much my perception of plague doctors changed when I saw this painting:

(From CBC's article about the plague doctor garb and PPE. This painting is in creative commons. I don't know who made it.) This picture is what finally got me to understand that Plague Doctors weren't scary people in costumes, they were just doctors. This garb isn't even scary, it reminds me of the PPE Gown I have at home. In fact, this looks shockingly effective as PPE garb. The problem is that they never disposed of it because they didn't have a concept of germs. I also imagine they took this garb off improperly, leading to contamination. The problem was miasma theory instead of germ theory. Miasma Theory was somewhat based in reality, and it did create a culture of needing hospitals to be clean and free of death so that "miasma" couldn't build. However, the concept of carrying germs was not known. So these doctors would wear this, think they were safe and not only take it off improperly, but keep it around instead of disposing of it. (Also, all plague doctor "ppe" was made with waxed leather, so I can't imagine wearing a full suit of this would be easy to put on and take off in comparison to our modern day PPE.) We're getting off topic though! Another one:

This shit looks so human to me. I can actually imagine a person behind it. Maybe it would be intimidating to see this irl, but then again, I would be intimidated to see someone in complete medical PPE towering over me. Still, this is so soft to me. I could actually imagine a person doing their best behind all of this, somebody so kind-hearted that they ventured down to see suffering to at least try to bring relief. This is in comparison to the almost inhuman plague doctor depictions-- the kind that makes the wearer look less like someone in PPE and more like some kind of omen of death sent from an evil entity to bring suffering.

I seriously can’t explain why, but ever since i saw The Miss Peregrine Movie in like 2016 before i read the last 5 books, i was so scared of Samuel L Jackson to the point where i would scream and cry if he came on the tv in an ad or a show. Still scared of him today.
