All right there has been some Discourse TM about George RR Martin because of that post he made going rogue on HOTD's writers (deleted a few hours later but archived) and I'm seeing some misinformed reactions by people who aren't in the publishing or entertainment industries so lemme clarify some things:

- Creators are not the ones with the power. Execs are. Even an author as big as George gets their opinions dismissed if the higher-ups don't want to listen.

- HBO has not listened to George's feedback and concerns for years. They do not have to, because once adaptation rights are signed away it is OUT of the author's hands. How do you think GOT Season 8 happened?

- George cannot just shut down production or refuse to let them make future seasons of any show inspired by his works because he doesn't like what they're doing. He can't break the contract willy-nilly either when HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS are at stake. I hope people keep that in mind before saying "oh why is he complaining while continuing to collect his royalty checks?" Well, if they're fucking up his stories he might as well get some money out of it.

- He's not complaining for complaining's sake. I hung out with him a few weeks ago and heard his full scope of opinions on HOTD and what he said in the post was VERY mild. Probably the least spicy storytelling critique he could've brought up. And I do believe this was on purpose and strategic. He's not going full scorched earth on HBO, but he's showing them that he COULD. He did this as a warning shot to get them to listen to him because clearly he saw some very upsetting plans for upcoming HOTD seasons. If he just wanted to complain there's way spicier shit he could've said.

- For those who think he's disrespecting the show's writers...How do you think he felt when they have dismissed his feedback in private and driven him to the point of risking legal action to make his point to them?

- Just because he didn't mention something in the post doesn't mean he approves of it or doesn't care, and the post should not be used to extrapolate his opinions on anything that's not related to what he specifically addressed. Again, what he said was VERY mild. Ultimately, what matters to him is logical storytelling and complex, morally gray characters.

- Lastly, I do not consider myself part of the HOTD or GOT fandoms. I'm a casual and defending him as a fellow author. Please do not involve me in any fandom drama. I do not know what's going on in there and I don't want to.

the thing about HotD trying to shove rhaenyra and alicent down our throats and build the show around their relationship is that the time for that has passed. if they truly, truly wanted us to buy into it they should have spent all of season one with it. they had two amazing young actors in the roles, they could have spent more time with them. we could have seen alicent's wedding, could have had conversations between the two of them after that. alicent trying to salvage and explain how little choice she has, alicent advocating for rhaenyra to have the choice she wasn't given, rhaenyra grappling with their change in station and dynamic, forgetting it for a moment only for it to come crashing back down that alicent is no longer her friend but her step mother, that her duty is to the king and not rhaenyra anymore. we could have seen alicent giving birth to any of her children, rhaenyra's siblings, and seen rhaenyra meeting her siblings for the first time. was she happy for a brief second when she first held aegon, or did she refuse to hold him knowing her claim would be challenged the moment he was born? did she hear alicent crying during labor and think of her own mother dying to finally give birth to the son her father wanted? was she afraid for the girl who was once her friend, did she fear that alicent would die? did part of her hope for it? did part of alicent hope for it too? we could have seen their friendship dissolve and morph into something painful and unrecognizable. we could have had so much more.

instead we are given...whatever the fuck season two is? it's hollow. it's lazy. it's bullshit.

"History will paint you a villain"

Fourth wall breaking to make us believe what they're putting in Rhaenyra's mouth.

Alicent went to Rhaenyra's wedding wearing the colors her House use for war, which created the Green and Black teams. She knew what she was doing.

Alicent was the only one who actively hated Rhaenyra's children to be bastards. Corlys and Rhaenys didn't really care, Rhaenyra's own husband didn't care, Viserys was totally happily in denial. Cole hated it, but his opinion doesn't matter.

Alicent made it a big deal, raised Aegon to be scared of Rhaenyra when he had no true animosity towards his sister before. And telling her son to spare Rhaenyra after years of telling him he was a challenge for her and would die if she becomes queen, was silly.

She helped put Aegon on the throne, and when learnt she was wrong to do so, started to show disdain for him that led Aegon to take his dragon to battle and get burnt.

Then, at his weakest state, she accepted Rhaenyra's deal that includes the murder of her son. The very son who did not want to be king in the first place. Just so she could run away with Helaena and her daughter. She is literally fleeing what she helped causing. She could protect Helaena and Jaehaera and stay in KL to be by her sons' sides and accepts the same sentence she put on them. But no, she still wants a way out of this mess.

So, the writers telling us, through Rhaenyra of all people, "Alicent is a only a victim of patriarchy and will be paint as a villain" is so stupid. Yes, she is a victim. But it doesn't justify all she did. In season two, she marvels at how messed up her boys are, when all their life they heard her complain about Rhaenyra and her bastard children, how Aemond lost an eye and how Lucaerys should have lost his too, that Rhaenyra will murder Aegon in cold blood when she becomes queen (before he usurped her).

So, yes, she is a villain and history will rightfully paint her as such. That doesn't make her a bad character, nor does it mean all victims become villains in turn; Rhaenys is a victim of patriarchy too, Rhaenyra and her mum, the servant girl who Aegon sexually assaulted, all the women of the story are victims of that.

Very interesting how Aegon the Conqueror supposedly cut himself on the throne, yet no one claimed he was unworthy, a bad ruler, or his reign short. But according to Eustace, Rhaenyra was cut while wearing full body armor, and WiSe mEn decided the throne had spurned the woman sitting on it. Truly objective and not at all mysoginistic propaganda. 🤢
