One of the ways I've seen Mashle's world described as was "What if Voldermord won?" As in, the magic world killed and keeps on killing non-magic users to this day, which is the main conflict of the series.
What I was curious about at the end of the second season, was how Adam Jobs, one of the strongest magicians of all time and figure head of the magic society from 100 years ago fit into this world, epsecially because he was a friend of lackmagics.
Like, how did an important and powerful person like that fail at protecting a part of his society until there was nearly no one left of that group?
In the rest of the story this gets explained in bits and pieces. Jobs was strong in everything magic but he wasn't strong in social change. Most of society, which was already discriminating against the lackmagic minority, didn't change bigoted their views even though he was the one bringing stability and reform to their world.
But then, there was a piece of lore that dropped pretty late after the other races of the world had been introduced (forgot which chapter.) It was about how weak humans were against races like giants and madjins, and how dangerous the world was to them until Jobs created safety by furthering his own and the magic of everyone else.
Thinking about all of that made me realize... that Jobs actually fascilitated the genocide of the normal humans by bringing stability to human society. Especially because that stability was build on magic.
These are just my thoughts bordering on headcanon because Mashle itself doesn't go into gritty detail about the societal factors that led to the genocide outside of extreme magical racism. But you can make the connections:
a powerful magician brings peace to the humans with his magic
that peace is kept by the powerful magic of subsequent generations, mostly in the form of the Divine Visionaries
magic becomes the absolut scale on how human life is valued
in this new and stable society, measures to keep violent fascism at bay fail
not only are lackmagics percecuted and killed, but also everyone who falls into adjacent categories of them: people who protect and hide them, people who lose their magic at some point in their life
this kind of fascist ideology doesn't contain itself to just one and clearly defined out-group. More and more categories of humans get pushed out of the in-group like people with weak magic and magical skills (like Regro) and lower classes including orphans (like Finn and Rayne) and the poor (as seen with Abel)
In essence, the world of Mashle is a really shitty place, and if you don't get blinded by the humor, that's clear as day. But back to my original point: Adam Jobs contributed to this development not only by failing to take preventing steps to protect lackmagics, but also by building the stable foundation of the magic society itself.
My logic is basically, without Jobs, the humans wouldn't live with a central government that values magic as a divine blessing and its absence as a mistake in the universe. And without that ideology and the newly organized society they lived in, the genocide against the lackmagics wouldn't have happened. At least not at such a scale.
I think in a dangerous world were humans hadn't yet ascended the food chain, normal humans would've managed to live, either among (some) magicians or in their own communities because scoiety would've been way more fractured, giving them pockets of air to breathe.
#wait wait wait hold up#I'm having Thoughts#just need to figure out Words now...#very interesting take op can't say I fully agree#give me some time to articulate myself lol my brain isn't braining rn#mashle#adam jobs

Hoh my gosh, I was NOT expecting to see an Abel analysis but I'm so happy you made this!!
I agree so much with the bit about Abel's ideology being a way to rationalize his mother's death!! That was literally my first thought when he learnt his backstory, like it makes so much sense!! He even calls her mentality noble but naive, but he doesn't acknowledge that she most likely knew the risks she was taking considering the mentality that their society is built on.
He also never mentions his father, which is another mark against him. The wiki says that his mother loved his father so I doubt he was cruel or elitist or anything but he was maybe negligent, which would explain a lot about Abel's emotional ineptitude, but that veers to far into hc territory for an analysis...
You have a really good point about no one questioning Abel's third line. Abyss is the one who tells Mash about it coming from the IZ involvement, but he's probably the only one who Abel told about it, meaning everyone else just saw this unsupervised kid show up to class with a new mark one day and didn't question it for some reason? Maybe the bureau was being overworked with dealing with IZ and couldn't spare a DV to look into it but Wahlberg should definitely have been suspicious atleast- so many unanswered questions :/
I have so many thoughts about Abyss and Abel's relationship, but I'll try to keep this platonic. Abel's entire switch in mentality kind of hinging on Abyss makes me feel so many things... It felt like he kind of lost his purpose in those moments after Mash defeated him. Like he was just kind of standing around while the others were celebrating, and then he didn't even try to fight back against Cell War, until he had that whole realisation about Abyss being like his mother. Only then did he use his magic, and specifically to help Mash who helped him make this realisation that he was essentially lying to himself about his feelings!!
Actually can i ramble for a bit cause i'm sad blorbo is being super mischaracterized imo
Like i love Abel this is my plushie and i am a dog who bites it and throws it around
I mean it's probably because modern fadoms don't like unromaticizeable complexity but like. The way he turned out when we meet him for the first time and the way he changes post Magia Lupus arc makes perfect sense to me????
His mother taught him to be kind, to help others. And then, while doing just that, she was murdered (not sure which q&a translation i've seen is more accurate but there is one on tumblr which kind of implies he was present for it).
It makes perfect sense for a child to try to rationalize a tragedy like that. "She kept saying to be kind but doing that got her killed. So she must have been wrong". And thats how it starts.
It really doesn't look like a stretch to me that it would spiral into the extremism we see in canon, this is a society prioritizing strength, look at Carpaccio, Wirth and Orter's father, the Rosequartz twins' father, the way the DVs are chosen. Cause it definitely wasn't an instananeous change like "oops, mom died, guess i'm evil now!", it's just not how people work.
We don't get any information about his father, but i doubt he was emotionally present. Sir, your son carries around a doll he calls 'Mother' and talks to, this is not a sign of adressed trauma, this along with his philosophy and its roots is a coping mechanism of a very traumatized person. But i'm not gonna put any of my headcanons here. All i'm saying is that if his father was a good parental figure and a good person Abel likely wouldn't have ended up like this, with an immature idea of a good world and an impossible plan.
(plus, imagine your son randomly gets a third line, which is permanent, not how lines naturally work, how would you not question it? It was a deal with Innocent Zero, a terrorist organization, how would it not get discovered immediately if there was a grown, responsible adult close to him?)
And yes, immature, because although it must have taken years since his mother's death to fully develop that flawed worldview, it fundamentally ignores the nuances of humanity and oversimplifies society as a whole, it's a childish way of thinking. Which makes sense if it stared as a way for a child to understand a tragedy like losing a parent. And also yes, impossible, because his picture of a perfect world, his goal, is vague, undefined and impossible to enforce. That would be assuming Kaldo would have let him through to become a DV candidate, which i doubt.
The closest thing possible to what he describes is the world as it is, maybe if police brutaity Georg himself mr Orter Madl had more freedom to skip trials and go straight to executions but he's his own topic so i won't be elaborating right now
But even considering all of that.
I don't believe Abel was fully into it. Maybe he himself didn't fully notice/acknowledge it, but it doesn't look like a full developed plan to me, more like an obsession and lashing out in response to a sudden traumatic event.
Partially because of how quickly he noticed the cracks in his philosophy (acknowledging that he never considered the possibility of being on the 'weak' side while getting his ass beat by Mash) and how quickly he abandoned his goal, but mostly because the presence and role of Abyss.
He pointed out himself that he sees his mother's kindess in Abyss. The kindness he also claims is a weakness. If he noticed it earlier, why would he keep him around and trust him to the point of making him his second in command unless he didn't look down on it as he seemed at first? And if he noticed it in that moment, why would Mash saying it made Abyss happy to be in this role have an effect on him unless he didn't look down on it as he seemed at first?
In my opinion that is because the whole thing was a subconscious attempt at rationaizing a tragedy, not something he was comfortable in.
And, replying to possible arguments ahead of time, this isn't an "excuse" or anything, i'm analyzing a character 💀💀💀 people with shitty views in real life didn't pull it out of their asses either, although in real life the radicalization tends to happen when extremist groupd take advantage of emotionally, psychologically amd socially vulnerable people, but this is a fictional character soooo
#my silly little guy#need to put him in a grinder#I'm not sure what mischaracterisation op was referring to tho#I just wanted to ramble about the him#abel walker#mashle
