Meeting with Sarah
Me and Sarah have met up twice this second week and discussed many ideas, progressing from ‘Anarchy’ to ‘Rioter’ which we think will go best with our idea. All our other briefs we discussed they were all girly so we wanted to take a different approach to this one and try something different. We went to 3 different locations just incase we needed backups. We went to the skatepark in Leyland and they said we could shoot on the Friday 24th March at 2pm-4pm, so we confirmed it and went back to uni to discuss hair and makeup ideas. Sarah contacted a photographer so we could focus moron the styling and not have to worry about the photography. Dean contacted us back and said he would happily be the photographer for this shoot and he also said he knows a few models wanting photography pictures for their portfolios. He said he had a girl called Demi Leigh from Liverpool who was going to be perfect for the grunge, grotty shoot.
On the Friday morning we both arrived at uni ready to do the hair and makeup, and we got a message off Dean (photographer) that the model hadn’t messaged him the day before or the day of the shoot. Me and Sarah went round Victoria Building for 2 hours asking if any of the textiles, graphics, design students would be able to model for us that afternoon and everyone was either busy or didn’t have that ‘grunge’ look we wanted. At this point we were both stressing because we had the location of the skatepark already booked out for the day. We came to a conclusion we would shoot on the Monday, the day before hand in!! But still go down to the skatepark and do a few test shots of Sarah in the clothing/outfits to see the different looks, the only problem was they couldn’t give us the location on the Monday, so backup location 2 was still as good as the skatepark. After having the skatepark test shoots we decided we could still use some of the skatepark background and have the new model photoshopped into it.
Tomorrow is our shoot day.

What Causes Riots?
Riots are shocking events where the ordinary rules of society break down. London 2011 was gripped by the sight of burning cars and hooded youths looting shops. But why do riots happen? What reason could there be for such destruction? Is it poverty and unemployment? Are people alienated from society? Or was it simple opportunism by criminals? Are they provoked by police brutality? Or did the police do too little to stop them? Are they the sign of a breakdown in morality? Are they a product of a “culture of dependency”? Or do some people just want to see the world burn?
The main reason why riots happen is due to the riots themselves. Once a riot and looting begins, they build up a momentum of their own. A form of herd effect takes place, people loot because others are doing so as well. A crowd offers anonymity so people who wouldn’t ordinarily steal feel that they can get away with it as everyone else is. It is hard to catch one thief when hundreds are stealing. Once rioting begins in one place word soon spreads other mimic them. If you could steal with little chance of being caught, many otherwise law abiding people would do it. What is interesting is that once a group of people decided to start rioting, there is little to stop them. This shows how heavily society is based on social norms, if these norms stop being respected by even a small group, society ceases to function effectively.

Looking through the news and professional rioting photography really helped me get the idea of the kind of looks and poses we want to do. The colour palette of the photos really stands out and I want to bring these colours out in our photography when we shoot.

Researching London Riots
The 2011 England riots occurred between 6 and 11 August 2011, when thousands of people rioted in several London boroughs and in cities and towns across England. The resulting chaos generated looting, arson, and mass deployment of police and resulted in the death of five people. Disturbances began on 6 August after a protest in Tottenham, London, following the death of Mark Duggan, a local man who was shot dead by police on 4 August. Several violent clashes with police ensued, along with the destruction of police vehicles, a double-decker bus, and many homes and businesses, thus rapidly gaining attention from the media. Overnight, looting took place in Tottenham Hale retail park and nearby Wood Green. The following days saw similar scenes in other parts of London, with the most rioting taking place in Hackney, Brixton, Walthamstow, Peckham, Enfield, Battersea, Croydon, Ealing, Barking, Woolwich, Lewisham and East Ham. From 8 to 10 August, other towns and cities in England (including Birmingham, Coventry, Leicester, Derby, Wolverhampton, Nottingham, West Bromwich, Bristol, Liverpool, Manchester, and Salford) saw what was described by the media as "copycat violence". Social media sites including Facebook also featured rumours of further disturbances or details surrounding known disturbances which were later proven to be inaccurate; for instance there were rumours of disturbances in the town of Dudley and at the nearby Merry Hill Shopping Centre, but no incidents in these areas were detected by police. Rumours of a hospital being targeted by rioters in Birmingham were also proven to be wrong, as were rumours of disturbances in the Heath Town district of Wolverhampton, which had witnessed a serious riot in May 1989. By 15 August, more than 3,000 arrests had been made across England, with more than 1,000 people issued with criminal charges for various offences related to the riots. Initially, courts sat for extended hours. There were a total of 3,443 crimes across London that were linked to the disorder.Along with the five deaths, at least 16 others were injured as a direct result of related violent acts. An estimated £200 million worth of property damage was incurred, and local economic activity - which in many cases was already struggling due to the recession - was significantly compromised. The online video website YouTube was soon host to much video footage of the riots, which had been recorded by witnesses and participants. The riots have generated significant ongoing debate among political, social and academic figures about the causes and context in which they happened. Attributions for the rioters' behaviour include such social factors such as racial tension, class tension, economic decline and the unemployment that it had brought, as well as individual factors like criminality, hooliganism, the breakdown of social morality and the development of gang culture.
