The best way to stop companies from using animals is to refuse to purchase their products and to write and tell them why you won’t be using their eye shadow, detergent, or shampoo.

According to change.org, the US spends approximately $16 billion dollars for the testing of cosmetics on animals a year. The catch is, even though the US government looks down upon brands testing on animals, there are still some governments in the world such as China where animal testing is required in order to sell products in their countries. Brands such as “MAC” cosmetics who claim to be cruelty free also sell their products in China. The pieces of that puzzle just do not seem to fit. While some brands who do test on animals make a quality product, is it really worth your hard earned money knowing an innocent animal was harmed in the making of the product? There are ways to know if your product has been given the all clear.

Animal Cruelty in the Industry: The Dark Side of the Beauty Industry
The beauty industry has grown to be one of the most powerful industries in the world right now. Everyone is obsessed with what to do for hair, makeup, nails etc. They obsess over new products, new looks, techniques it's a constant ongoing cycle in the industry. But unfortunately, like most say “Beauty comes with a price” and that price could be the cost of an animals life. To this date, tons of beauty companies still test on animals rather than testing their products on humans who will actually be the ones using those products and buying those. because of this over 100,000 - 200,000 animals each year either suffer or even end up dead from the tests that the brands do. These animals include household pets like Dogs, Cats, Rabbits and hamsters And other animals like Monkeys, mice and rats.
Companies will use the animals to test for eye and skin irritation in their products. Although over 28 countries, including Canada, have banned animal testing for makeup brands and other brands that are not beauty related. While this is a good thing, unfortunately, this problem is still a big one. In countries like China, it is a mandatory law for animals to be tested on if a product is being sent over to them from another country So if a product like MAC, for example, is cruelty-free in Canada or other countries, but sells their products in China, this technically does not make them cruelty-free.
This is a problem for many brands who are cruelty-free in one country but then isn’t in the other if they want to sell their products in that country then they need to test their products on animals to show that it is safe to use. Now, you may think, “why can’t China just not test on Animals?”,”Why can’t other products just not sell in China?” or “Why do Companies still test on animals if it’s not required anymore in countries that are against testing?” Humane Society international claims:
“Almost without exception, companies have a choice about whether or not to test on animals. In the majority of cases, animal tests continue because some companies insist on developing and using “new” ingredients. These are ingredients that don’t have existing safety data—because they’re new! So new safety data has to be generated to satisfy the regulators before a product can go on sale, and that means new animal testing.
Why can’t they just use non-animal test methods? Well, they can for many of the test requirements because there are many superior non-animal tests available. But there aren’t non-animal test methods available yet for every single test area that needs to be performed for new ingredients. That’s because for so many years the development of non-animal tests simply hasn’t been seen as a priority, and developing new non-animal methods takes time. We’ll get there for sure, but we’re not there yet. So where there are test gaps, animal tests are performed.” - Humane Society International.
To add on, most companies will also test on animals because it is a cheaper alternative to show that their product is safe for consumers to use. Although it seems sad, and may even anger some about the idea of still testing on animals in the beauty industry there is something we can do as beauty influencers who are planning to have a future career in the industry. We can sign petitions, let our voices be heard about how we're not okay with other beauty brands testing on animals. We can boycott brands that test on animals and use cruelty-free beauty brands instead. A few beauty brands include Wet N Wild, Tarte, Too Faced, Lush, The body shop, Anastasia Beverly Hills and Pacifica.
