Meyer, unintentionally, introduced a terrifying idea here. Imagine seeing the volturi who have been alive for thousands of years and they have their translucent white skin, milky red eyes, and are bald. Like the longer you’re a vampire you become more monster—like. Your fair eventually is yanked off or falls off. Your skin gets translucent and becomes more sensitive in sunlight to the point it burns. Your eyes turn milky and while your night vision becomes even better, you’re blinded by direct sunlight. Other “dead parts” like the ends of toes and fingernails fall off. Eyelashes fall off.
I think that this would be so cool—to show there is a downside to this eternal life and the longer you’re a vampire, you don’t just lose regard for humanity and mortality because you’ve grown so disconnected from it but you physically change as well. Im imagining the angel from Midnight Mass if you’ve seen that show. Meyer would never take this route cuz her Precious Cullens would meet that fate, but imagine if that’s what the volturi look like—maybe that’s a consequence of drinking HUMAN blood and the cullens can preserve their more human features because the don’t drink human blood but animal blood? There are so many different possibilities but Meyer never cared about the vampire or monster aspect, only when it fitted or complicated her romance.
Imagine how much more powerful Bella’s choice would have been if she’d seen the volturi like that—what long term immortality does. It would change everything because honestly other than out living her friends and family, Bella makes no sacrifice choosing vampirism. And even then she gets everything in the end, keeping a relationship with Jacob and Charlie. But if she knew she’d become something like that, but knew she could still be with Edward, it would have raised the stakes and make made her THINK more about her choice. It would make Rosalie’s speech about immortality so powerful. Because in the canon books, Bella can still play human family forever if she wants. It won’t be that easy when she and Edward turn into creatures that look monstrous.
Ok, so we know the vampires can't grow their hair back, so if they cut it they either have to stay that way or go shorter. But, since their hair, presumably, is at least somewhat as strong as they are, couldn't they in theory bleach and dye their hair as much as they wanted? That seems like a good way to get away with being alive so long, changing hair can make people look very different.
So, SM had this to say on the Twilight Lexicon, re: if vampires shower:
They do wash the dust and rain out of their hair, too. And Rosalie particularly spends a lot of time doing hers. (Hair is dead cells–the vampire transformation doesn’t affect it. If you’ve got split ends, sorry! Not getting better. Ha ha).
Which, I mean . . . what. How. Why. All vampires would be basically bald after a certain point because hair, even if it didn't naturally shed, would break or be pulled out over time if it's just human hair. And then not grow back because vampires don't change. I don't . . . I don't think she thought this through at all?
So there's got to be some element of vampire indestructibility to hair, right? Otherwise Rosalie's luscious blonde locks are basically impossible. Even if the hair was just like, super strongly rooted to the vampire-diamond-skin-scalp, it could still break as easily as human hair if nothing else was changed about it--every time she used a hair tie, or it got caught on a branch, or who knows what else.
For vampire hair to still be around after a few decades, let alone centuries, it needs to be stronger. Maybe it doesn't fix split ends or change length, color or texture (but it does in the movie--you can see Bella's hair spring back to life in her transformation sequence), it has to be more durable somehow.
And if that's the case then yeah I don't see any reason they couldn't experiment with styles and coloring as long as they don't cut it. The question would be if human methods of hair dyeing/styling would work on vampire hair, or if they would need to come up with their own methods, because obviously it's designed for human hair (even within the realms of human hair different hair types need different products and methods). If, say, vampire hair is coated with an impenetrable shell, that would change things. Or if the hair oils are now venom-based that would affect how different products worked, etc.
But again I don't think SM thought of any of this and her comment was more to joke about Rosalie's alleged vanity (again).
I hope they do have ways of changing up their styles even if they can't cut it. As you said, it would be a great way to change their appearance for secrecy and blending in sake, but also it is probably just nice for them to be able to change SOME part of their appearance occasionally and feel a little less trapped and stagnant.

the premise of the vegetarian diet is fundamentally silly. just get a halal butcher in on the secret. boom, all the blood you need and it fulfills the spirit of vegetarianism because all of those animals would be killed either way. realistically idk if a devout muslim butcher would give away blood to be consumed but theres all kinds of people and i bet the cullen's could find a butcher willing to part with animal blood.
they just dont want to. theyd rather hunt recreationally.
I suspect this goes back to SM's own kind of lack of imagination on this. She's not really here for the vampire stuff, she's never been interested in the genre before having this dream, so she's not delving into it all that much. "I don't want them to kill people, oh they can drink animal blood!" and then there's that bit about predators taste better and I honestly think that's as far as she went with it.
Because, yeah, you can buy animal blood from a butcher. Animal blood is used in recipes around the world, so as long as you had several butchers and didn't buy like, overwhelming quantities at once from the same one, you could probably get away with it, and would be a more ethical, less violent way to be a vegetarian vampire.
There's also the idea they could go a True Blood route and like, use all their endless time and advanced degrees to develop a synthetic blood that satisfies the thirst. I guess you could argue this might not be possible if there's some magical quality to 'living' blood (the Life Force), but she's said her vampires are more science than magic so it should be doable.
All that said, there might be something to physically hunting that is important to them. I tend to think at this point Carlisle would probably be content bringing a thermos of blood from the butcher with him everywhere versus hunting, but he's a lot older than the rest and has super compassion, so it could be he's just over the thrill of the hunt and it's more of a chore than anything.
But for the others it might be a way to control their vampire instincts by giving into them, to let off steam. To have fun--Emmett seems to enjoy 'playing with his food.'
Again, though, I think the fandom thinks about this a lot more than SM did. Hunting was used more as a plot device ("Hmm I need to get so and so out of the picture for awhile, oh I can say they are hunting!) and we only actually see hunting a few times in the series. SM wanted the angst of "oh I'm a monster" but beyond that she just wasn't that into the vampire stuff which is a shame because as usual there's so much potential there. Like, take Esme. She's so warm and loving, so does she feel bad for killing animals? But she also grew up on a farm--so does killing animals for food sort of feel 'normal' to her and a circle-of-life kind of thing. Does she refuse to kill animals who might be mothers? Does she kill predators to protect prey species, or she trying to keep the animal population in balance? Who knows, we never see her hunting or even hear about her preferences because SM seems to barely remember that Esme is a vampire most of the time.

Y'know I think one of the biggest clues that Stephenie Meyer just writes whatever with zero forethought into how that should play into the universe she's creating, is the blood typing scene. I'm sure I've seen someone talk about this before, but having Bella be able to smell blood (even the small drop on a students finger when they also get brought into the nurses office) and having it effect her so much that she can't even be in the same room and then to not make that like a major part of the plot in a vampire series is so stupid. It's set up so it could be like Bella had a tiny bit of vampire DNA in her from one mating with a human centuries back and she's part of that lineage, especially with Breaking Dawn and now knowing that's possible. It would explain why she takes to vampirism so naturally, she's been dealing with a level blood sensitivity her entire life so she's able to control the blood lust much better than any normal newborn, and it could even be used to explain why her blood to everyone smells so incredibly sweet as a human. Yes she's Edwards singer specifically, but in almost each book a comment by a different vampire is made about how good she smells. There was just so much potential for that blood typing scene to lead to something greater but it was left as just a throwaway thing to make Bella seem even less like other girls to have Edward be interested. I remember the first time I read the books and got to that scene and I was so excited cause "omg is bella not totally human? Where is this gonna lead?!" And then it lead nowhere. It could have all come together in BD with the gathering of witnesses and an old friend of Carlisles comes and recognizes the last name and that bella maybe resembles the girl that vampire mated with in some way.
Anyway Stephenie really said it herself when she said she "considers nothing"

why jacob’s anger is justified and edward’s a mean old jerk
Let’s forget how smeyer ruined Jacob’s sweet, sunshine personality and warm innocence for the sake of making the EdwardxBella case stronger and just follow me here for a minute. If we think about everything from Jacob’s perspective, his dislike for Edward is totally justified. Forget the love triangle and the vampire hate for a second and take Jacob’s dislike for Edward from an objective point. From his POV (New Moon pre-werewolf transformation) Bella’s mysterious ex-boyfriend not only left her broken-hearted with no remorse but left the poor girl by herself in the middle of the woods after they broke up which is the last time she ever sees him. To Jacob– or to any other regular person (CHARLIE)– that’s plain terrible. Bella goes into a depression, stops eating, seeing her friends etc. but you know who’s there for it all? Jacob. He was there for her when she was at her lowest and was her friend and support system the entire time. Edward didn’t stick around for that, he consciously chose not to have to watch and live through the consequences of his actions. Does it eventually pain him to see how Bella struggled through Jacob’s thoughts in Eclipse, yes, but for the most part he didn’t have to deal with it. Which leads me to my next point. What I don’t understand is that after all Jacob did for Bella in New Moon (by just being her friend and being there for her) Edward has the audacity to get territorial with Bella and restrict her access to Jacob as soon as he’s back in her life. I don’t get it. The whole hijacking her truck thing and claiming “the wolves aren’t safe they can’t control themselves.” I mean is he acting out of pure jealousy? Like dude if you’re worried about Bella having developed an emotional attachment to Jacob, it’s kind of your fault for leaving her in the first place. And even then being protective is different than controlling someone. The only reason Edward is back in Bella’s life at the end of New Moon is because she chose to have him back, she was irrevocably in love with him and overlooked 7 months of emotional trauma because smeyer is smeyer. But to an outsider like Jacob, watching that relationship unravel Bella just for her to go back to Edward was probably mind-blowing. And we can see as the series progresses how his dislike for Edward and his disagreement with her choice to take him back coalesces into disrespect for her autonomy and boundaries.
Even from the perspective of an outsider who platonically loves Bella like Charlie, it’s easy to recognize that the way Edward treated Bella was not okay, so to dislike him is justified. Even if in Edward’s mind his intentions were pure, he still disrespected Bella’s autonomy and treated her like a child with no choice. In the end of Midnight Sun even Alice is like ‘Edward you can’t choose for her’ and he’s essentially like ‘we’ll see.’ While trying to fight visions of the future he forgets that BELLA IS LITERALLY HER OWN PERSON.
So in conclusion Edward was being a jerk and Jacob not liking him makes a whole lot more sense and his reasons aren’t all just about him being in love with Bella and having a romantic adversary.
Jacob’s dislike for the Cullens for simply being vampires is an entirely different story but I can go into that too.

Time for the official announcement!
Thank you all for your patience and enthusiasm. A year ago on July 14th, 2020 I created this blog. I stayed off tumblr for so many years, but you have all given me such a warm welcome. This website is the reason for the so-called “Twilight Renaissance” and I am beyond grateful. As a token of gratitude I am making this announcement here on tumblr.com long before I announce it anywhere else.
So without further ado, I am pleased to announce that I will be releasing another book called Retrograde! This time from Mike Newton’s perspective! I can’t tell you all of the detail, even though I would love to, but I can tell you a little bit. You all fell in love with my characters, so I wanted to give you a chance to see what they’re up to these days.
Twenty five years after the events of Breaking Dawn, a middle-aged Mike Newton enjoys a perfectly normal life with his family in Juneau, Alaska. However, that all changes when he recognizes the new students his children go to school with.
And here is the cover!

I hope you are not upset that this cover steps away from the traditional cover scheme. After all, it wouldn’t make sense for Mike Newton to be represented by black and red.
Stay tuned for the release date, preorder link, and more details.
Stephenie
