Just to put this into perspective for y’all, I usually manage to squeeze 1-2 full cutscenes into a chapter (depending on how much internal monologuing, description, flashbacking, added scenes and assorted other non-dialogue stuff I add for flavour). That gives probably about 2-3 chapters between now and Wings-Ripped-Off-Gate.

So, like. Enjoy the relative calm and quiet that the next couple chapters will bring, while they last. Things are about to get intense.

Well, you mentioned Hollysugar so I wanna know about that one, but also the less popular by the community, Hollytaya? (Hollyberry + Pitaya, sounds a lil’ strange at first, I know, until there’s many connections with Hollyberry to dragons such as her being able to equip the dragon topping type, n’ stuff.)

…there’s also a poly version of all three I think but I don’t exactly remember the name because I feel like that is a rarer poly ship? (Poly ships are rarer by nature anyway) And I don’t know if there’s a ship name other than… uh, HollySugarTaya…? I haven’t been involved as much with that one but I’m giving that a try since I’ve seen it around a bit, at least for me.

And hey, it doesn’t matter if you don’t necessarily like ‘em to me! Nor is it disappointing - if I wanted all positive takes on a ship I’d like and I knew I would get disappointed in the response I would’ve just looked around in the community instead lol, I’m kinda that unbothered person that doesn’t bother people for ships they don’t like - ship fights are so overrated anyway imo nyahahah

The ship game (or you could say, even CRK as a whole to some extent…? Sometimes?) itself gives a ship interesting takes that give a refreshing perspective even if they’re not a fan, haha <3

anyway, HollySugar and Hollytaya. I love both of these tbh. (I'm probs not really going to follow the structure of the ask game unless I have nothing else to say bc I really just want an excuse to yap and interact with people)

Hollytaya first! Is it really less popular? That's actually a surprise - I thought it was the most popular Holly ship until BY10 came out and took the fandom by storm. But then again I'm not exactly the most fandom-savvy person out there lmao. Regardless! I love Hollytaya. It's one of those ships that's kind of bizarre and I love it for that. Honestly I was surprised when I first played through Crispia ("wait, Pitaya's evil??") and didn't super get why people would ship them... UNTIL the ending. and my god it did a stellar job selling me on a ship in precisely 0.5 seconds. Pitaya really staged an entire fake hostile takeover just to get Holly's attention so they could spar again. Their love language is violence. It's adorable.

As for HollySugar - ooooouuuggghhh. it's peak. I love it. and yes it is ENTIRELY in character despite what some people say. it's just so interesting... I think there is a world where they could make it work as an actual healthy relationship but honestly whatever the hell they have going on right now captivates me way more.

Both of them being reflections of the other - both of them wanting to protect those they care about, but Hollyberry constantly burning herself out and shirking responsibility because she's afraid of doing the wrong thing - and Eternal Sugar keeping all her denizens in a gilded cage because she's terrified of them getting hurt, or worse, leaving her behind. My god. They're both hot messes but one gets better and the other gets worse. I can completely see why Sugar fell in love with Holly, but because of the way she's built her home and envisions true happiness she can't bring herself to let her love leave her and go back out into a world of pain. But she genuinely doesn't see how SHE'S part of the problem. How her methods are hurting her denizens just as much as the other Beasts' more obviously destructive ways. But Holly DOES see that - but she also sees that Sugar cares, that she genuinely thinks she's doing the right thing, and BELIEVES she's capable of change. I just. It's really good. It's really, really good. This basically turned into a mini character analysis lmao

As for all three of them - yeah I'm sold. Tbh I don't think it'd be much different, just happening simultaneously, and there could be some fun conflict in the fact that I don't think Sugar and Pitaya would super get along lol. But I do think the mental image of Hollyberry rocking up to the next Ancients' get-together with a Dragon on one arm and a Beast on the other is EXTREMELY hilarious and the other Ancients would lose their shit. Someone write that fic omg

so. I think part of why I love them so much is that both their current dynamic and their history together are fascinating completely on their own. if you ignore where they're at now, you get a gorgeous tragedy of friends to enemies, and if you ignore the Evil Bastard Smoked Cheese Arc then you still have two people who mesh as much as they clash and complement each other beautifully. combine the two and I am absolutely sold, this ship is everything I love

if you were to. idk. play through beast yeast before anything else with no prior context (dumb idea right. who would ever do that. nervous laughter) then even in a vacuum their dynamic there is so interesting. they instantly read as two vastly different people who were once close, are currently not on the Best terms but are sort of trying to repair their bond. there's that sort of disconnect between them, that tension, but in a time of crisis they slide right back into their old positions as comrades and friends. (and lovers- *GETS SHOT*)

like. I'm sorry what do you mean in the span of a SINGLE DAY Smoked Cheese goes from "ugh why the fuck am i here i should've just run off and left you like you wanted" to being downright offended and refusing when she tells him to escape with the Kulfi and leave her to confront Burning Spice. what do you MEAN Golden Cheese woke him up specifically because she (rightfully) thought his loyalties were with the kingdom, not with her, only for him to literally tell her to abandon HIM and save herself when in danger. And she doesn't. Of course she doesn't. Because despite everything, despite the horrible betrayal, she still cares for him as one of her treasures. And despite how much he lost faith in HER before, he still calls her Radiant Queen on pure instinct and defends her to the death and monologues to Nutmeg for an entire cutscene about her come ON.

And then back to Crispia - again, if you see this completely devoid of context, not knowing where things end up and that they manage to get back on better terms afterwards, there's still so many layers to their relationship (like an onion, one might say). They get along on the surface but there's that disconnect, even more pronounced here because both of them are essentially suffering in silence in different ways. Golden Cheese is hiding the fact their world is a simulation from everyone except her closest friends, and she's not told ANYONE that she literally cannot find another way to bring them back. And this causes Smoked Cheese to believe she doesn't care, she's just childishly clinging to remnants of the past rather than helping her kingdom prosper forwards, and he's kind of right about that last part but he's EXTREMELY wrong about the idea that he could do a better job. There's such an inherent misunderstanding between these two at this time and neither of them are fully able or willing to bridge the gap (Smoked because he doesn't trust her anymore and Golden because she hasn't yet realised how disillusioned he's become). And she TRIES to reach out to him a couple of times, but it's not enough because by this point he's too far gone. Neither of them can fully function. Neither of them, despite the front Golden Cheese puts up, are happy.

And after the betrayal. After the big evil speech, revealing the truth to the entire population in the worst and most abrupt way possible. After stealing her Souljam (that's right, he did it before any of the Beasts tried, he did it before it was cool!) and having a breakdown upon being unable to wield its power. After destroying the entire simulated City she'd worked so hard to build back up and putting everyone in danger. After - at his worst moment - trying to straight up kill her. After the Souljam has been stolen back, his one supposed ally turned on him, back against the wall, beaten down and defeated. After he fully loses his mind, acting with all the desperation and fury of someone who literally thinks he's about to die. After ALL OF THAT.

She doesn't punish him.

She doesn't yell, doesn't torment, doesn't even wound him or ANYTHING, after he's been defeated. She's still furious, obviously, and rightfully so. But she actually takes responsibility for her part in his corruption, tells him that "they'll talk when she wakes him up again", and sends him gently back to sleep with everyone else. Because AGAIN. Despite EVERYTHING. SHE STILL CARES ABOUT HIM. She SEES what led up to this point, she's probably regretting not seeing it sooner. So despite herself, despite her best judgement, she keeps him by her side.

He was expecting to be executed or imprisoned or something dire like that. And he calls her foolish for giving him a second chance he doesn't deserve, one he's been granted before and wasted. Another chance to betray her trust.

And then when she wakes him up again he does everything in his power to prove he's earned back that trust.

Because despite trying his damndest he was never able to fully kill his loyalty to her - his care for her. He was never able to repress their shared history, their camaraderie. As much as she infuriates him, he adores her. And as much as he can irritate her, she truly does care about him.

They're an essential component to one another. He keeps her grounded and she keeps him gentle. As they grew apart, Smoked became more bitter and jaded and cruel, and Golden became wrapped up in the digital city of her own creation. And as they repair that bond, growing closer once more, you can literally SEE how they positively effect and rub off on one another - Golden being brought back down to earth by his pep talk in the birdcage, and Smoked being as instinctively protective over the Kulfi as she'd be in his place.

4 the ship ask game: burningcheese and hollycacao cuz they're both my parents

gee. i wonder why you're asking me abt those ships specifically. could it be because they're the two crk ships YOU got me into

anywayyy let's break these suckers down!

What Made Me Ship It:

Well, to be honest. I don't ship BurningCheese - at least not in the traditional sense. It does absolutely fascinate me, but I don't want them together in ANY way, I'm just captivated by the bizarre infatuation Bice has with Goldie. But as for what made me understand them - that'd be you, bestie. You told me about them and my immediate response was "ew why" (but phrased more politely) and then I played through BY6 and was like "oh. oh THAT'S why."

As for HollyCacao - god these two are fun. This was kind of a case of getting to know each character individually, and then going "oooh. but what if they kissed :D" Idk man something about how they are in Odyssey as fond reuniting friends just really hooked me in. And then... yk... the rest of Odyssey happened. And I was FULLY on board for these two divorced old people.

Why I Like It:

BurningCheese is just so fucking weird that it works. Bice is SO ABNORMAL and the more you look for it the more you see. I'm talking about shit like him pulling the "no one hurts her EXCEPT ME" card. Like him being actively furious and disappointed that she wasn't a bigger threat in their first fight, and visibly delighted when she breaks out. Like him being the only Beast to respond to their respective Ancient's awakening with joy and excitement while the others were shocked/furious. LIKE HIM LAUGHING IN ECSTASY AS SHE TEARS DOWN HIS PALACE ON TOP OF HIM. this man's ultimate fantasy is for them to fight to the death for the rest of eternity and it's both fascinatingly complex and really fucking embarrassing on his part. why is he like this. why is he LIKE THIS. (If you're wondering why I'm mostly focusing on him and not Golden Cheese, I'll explain in a bit.)

HollyCacao is a lot more simple tbh. It's "opposites attract", it's "reuniting years later and seeing how much we've both changed but are also the same", it's "our struggles still parallel one another even as we spend so much time apart". They're such wildly different people and yet when you put them together they just... click.

And they're both bad parents! It was meant to be! (Yes before you ask I immediately eat up any fanwork I find of Royalberry and Dark Choco as estranged brothers. I love that shit.)

Unpopular Opinions:

I don't think I have any for HollyCacao? Idk what opinions there generally are with this ship.

BurningCheese on the other hand... hmmh. Genuinely my answer could just be "I don't have a problem with it" lmao, it's such a specifically scapegoated ship even among beastxancient pairings. (No it's not "abuser x victim", stop throwing around the word "abuser". I totally get why ppl would be uncomfortable with it but you don't need to moralise your discomfort. You can just not like something.)

That being said, I think my unpopular opinion is that I cannot see it EVER being requited on GC's part. And that's just me, but the peak appeal with this ship to me is "he wants her so bad and she just wants him to go away/die". But tbh he also wants to die, so it all works out!
