It's a little surprising that the "Monday's child is fair of face" nursery rhyme never caught on as an arbitrary personality-assigner in the same way astrology did. It makes the same amount of sense.

Here's what Smeemo would look like if they were an advertisement for a fanny pack.
REALLY GOOD. PERFECT IMAGE.

on its own post as to not put this person on blast: yes, and that should be expected of the genre, and it's kind of fascinating the degree to which people will assume it isn't.
the thing is, uma musume is a "horse waifu gacha". fundamentally, one of the things it is selling you is "look at these characters, spend money to get access to these characters". the writing does tend to assume a degree of romance between the player trainer character and the girls (that varies depending on the route, some read much more romantic than others). the presumed original target audience here is straight men. now, the designs are not actually super horny about this (comparative to its peers at least), but i want to state that i am not claiming that this kind of gacha game isn't trying to sell you on "aren't you attracted to this design and aren't you emotionally attached to this girl", because that is 100% the selling point.
but like... the thing is that "aren't you attracted to this character", fundamentally, requires at least decent character writing and decent character designs. if the thing a "waifu gacha" (to borrow that phrase) is selling you is the characters, why do people assume that the character writing will be... bad? that the writing in general will be bad? and like, the thing is... yeah, sure, there are games and anime in that genre where the writing on the waifu is wholly bad and uninteresting. but those don't tend to be the popular ones, not without at least something else going on.
people don't become emotionally invested in characters that don't have things going on! people don't spend money on things that they aren't emotionally invested in! there's a reason that the tsundere is one of the most well-known 'waifu' tropes, and it's because that is often the character in a show or game like that with the most compelling personality!
it's not just uma musume that people do this with. i see this ALL THE TIME with anime and anime games where part of the selling point is meant to be "look at this waifu". and i always wonder what they think those things are selling, then, when they dismiss them like this.
i also swear i only ever see this about anime and anime games and not western media funny how that works i wonder if there is some other underlying cultural assumption as to why a 'waifu' clearly means it can only be badly written and have nothing compelling in it at all,

gamers who spam through tutorial instructions or skip cutscenes and then complain that the gameplay is frustratingly unintuitive or that the story sucks are equivalent to those online cooking weirdos where they substitute carrots for chocolate and then complain to the author of the article that the recipe is a failure. bestie perhaps look inwards

Has anyone figured out what’s so viscerally wrong with this woman yet
#Utterly disgusted that her dumpster fire book series still has so much cultural relevance#People just don’t fucking care#Every time some celebrity references or even mentions HP I die a lot inside#Just. Let it die#The fact that some people don’t even KNOW this woman is evil proves that people DON’T CARE ENOUGH ABOUT TRANS LIVES#And it’s disgusting
