Hey everyone! We’re sure you’ve noticed we’ve been a bit slow on the main right? We’re sorry about that! Over the last week we’ve ended up losing one of the admins, so we thought about what we should do going forward. We’ve decided we love this concept and are determined to keep moving forward with it! RESIDENT BULLETIN: OCTOBER!

Hello Treehouse residents! Spooky season is upon us! The first floor has been decked out with Halloween decorations and on Halloween weekend, there will be a party! It will take place on Saturday night predominantly on the first floor. However, each residential floor will have been assigned a Haunted House theme, and residents of the floor will be encouraged to decorate for a haunted house, which will function as the setting for a spectacular Halloween bash! Of course it’s a bit of a small party given the limited number of tenants, but it should be a great way to mingle with your neighbors! There will also be a pseudo-corn maze set up on the roof for decoration, as well as drinks and snacks provided by management and a set up of vintage scary movies showing in the movie room! There will be a costume contest and an award to the hall deemed to have the most “spirit!”

hardworking and loyal

jaeho is extremely hardworking. he’s extremely detail oriented and determined to finish whatever he puts his mind to. he’s doesn’t know the meaning of the phrase ‘too much’ instead knowingly pushes himself to the limit and back again, especially for others. he doesn’t much enjoy the praise he gets for a job well done, instead takes satisfaction in knowing he did the best he could with what he had and didn’t have.

aside from hardworking, jaeho is also extremely loyal. although he’s a bit on the quieter side, jaeho loves to make friends. he sees those he considers friends as his makeshift family. he’s that friend who answers his phone at 2 am to help you get home after a night out drinking and the first friend to volunteer to help you move. he is a keeper of secrets and doesn’t hestiate give advice where he can. jaeho although pretty passive has been known to throw a punch to defend those he loves without a single thought, would rather throw himself into the fire than see anyone else upset or hurt.

jaeho doesn’t know when enough is enough. he tends to stretch himself too thin even when he knows he doesn’t have much left to give. he’s learned many times in the past that this isn’t healthy especially for him but at the same time jaeho doesn’t know how to say no. he’s the first to volunteer for extra work, to help plan a friends birthday party, or even to put himself last for those who need his emotional support. this can go on for weeks at a time before jaeho will reach his breaking point. but even then, he keeps his problems to himself refusing to burden others with his feelings.

jaeho spends a lot of his time worrying about others that he forgets to worry about himself. one of his biggest concerns is making a burden of himself, so instead of worrying others he’ll oftentimes swallow down his feelings and opinions, especially if he knows it’ll affect others. he tends to avoid conversations about his own feelings often changing the topics or pretending he didn’t hear. because he keeps his feelings so tightly wrapped up it can lead to stress and frustration on his part, sometimes lashing out when he doesn’t mean it.

HAUNT

when jaeho was a child, there was nothing better than spending the day at the beach. there was nothing that he loved more. he could proudly say that his memories are filled to the brim with sunshine, with the summer heat so thick it seemed to hang off his shoulders like a cape. he remembers trying his best to build giant sandcastles for hours on end, of taking naps to the sound of the crashing waves from under his grandmother’s giant red umbrella.

but his feelings eventually changed as all things do. it happens in september on the tail end of a really good summer. instead of heading to class, he decides to chase adventure instead. it’s almost too easy, catching the bus a few blocks from the school and cutting across town to the beach.

the sand crumbles and crunches beneath his feet, socks and shoes traded out and stuffed messily inside of his backpack.

it being a week day means the beach is empty for miles in every direction. and despite the news promising fall weather is on the horizon, the air is thick with the remnants of summer. and jaeho is sweating through his school uniform as he sinks down into the sand, eyes trained on the tumbling waves in front of him, content to spend the afternoon this way.

but he doesn’t last long, is easily enticed by the waves as he imagines letting the water cool him down. it’s easy enough, to strip down to shorts, the footprints in the sand barely there, marking his eagerness.

the water rushes around his legs as he makes his way deeper, intent on just heading in enough to cool off. but it appears the ocean has other plans. in the past jaeho would refer to the ocean as gentle, but today he learns about her harsh side. the waves draw back as they always do, before rushing forward and slamming into his legs, knocking him off guard. it happens in a split second, but that’s all that’s needed and jaeho is submerged.

the waves are ruthless. they pull him further down, tossing and tumbling him without a care, leaving jaeho to fight desperately for breath and control. his fingers scrap on the ocean floor, hands ripped red from rock and harsh sand. it feels like hours, he’s left at the mercy of the ocean as she bends him to her will, throws him around and leaves his lungs burning for fresh air. and finally when she decides he’s had enough, she leaves him washing up on the shore panting and shaken up.

he leaves the beach that day terrified of the water and reminded that the world is made of up forces of nature that are rarely forgiving.

HISTORY

i. puppy love is sweet and innocent until it isn’t anymore. fresh out of high school and unsure of the world, the young couple is pressured by their families to marry, to save face before it’s too late. but it’s merely a punishment for a night of passion that should have never happened in the first place. they barely understand how the world works, couldn’t possibly understand love, didn’t have love for each other nor for the child they would soon bring into the world.

ii. jaeho is brought into the world a child filled to the brim with love in a household that knew none. he’s six the first time he realizes it, that his family aren’t like others. his classmates like to joke, like to tell him that his parents don’t love him. and jaeho argues and argues until he’s blue in the face but it’s hard to defend yourself when you think others might be right. their words cut into him, follow him around until it’s all he thinks about. there are no stories and warm hands to tuck him in when he’s ready to go to bed. his artwork doesn’t decorate the fridge in the kitchen. there are no words of welcome to greet him when he gets home every day.

instead jaeho lives in a house that’s much like a battlefield, landmines around every corner if you aren’t careful where you step. words are used like weapons, cutting deep and leaving wounds that don’t heal as quickly.

iii. like a volcano, the pressure continues to build until it’s had enough and blows. it begins with a screaming match, the air filled with missed opportunities and regrets.  jaeho gets in the way, tears wracking his small body as he tugs at both of his parents hands begging them to stop. it ends with one of those hands, never sturdy, never soft, meeting his cheek with a harsh crack, fingertips visible against his skin.

his teacher pulls him aside the next day, tells him she’s made some phone calls. and that’s how jaeho meets his grandparents for the first time.

iv. busan is nothing like seoul. sure, it’s just as busy just as filled with people. but there’s a level of relaxation to it that seoul never had. instead of feeling rushed, jaeho feels relief.

his grandparents are nothing like his own parents. they are kind, they ask a lot of him but it’s nothing that he can’t handle. they shower him in attention and slowly but surely jaeho learns what love is supposed to look and feel like. the boy who would be dulled grows to shine again.

v. not every story ends in tragedy but some of them are surely tinged with sadness. jaeho grows up quickly and the summer before his last year of high school, his grandfather passes away. it hits jaeho and his grandmother hard, leaves a hole in their tiny family they never thought possible. their house is suddenly too big, too much for just the two of them. his grandmother suggests moving in with her daughter and jaeho, he yells, he fights and eventually he gives in.

they sell the house and pack up everything they own. seoul is just as busy and loud as he remembers it. his mother just as cold, a divorcee, their schedules mean they rarely see each other, are only forced to share breakfast over a stilted table.

vi. jaeho graduates high school, he gets into a good university and he experiences tragedy for a second time. he loses his grandmother in the middle of winter. it isn’t long after that that he leaves his home, settles for working odd jobs and apartment hopping. that is until good luck smiles at him. jaeho graduates university and moves into the treehouse, determined to make it on his own.
