Tamil Nadu’s M Raja Gears Up for International Weightlifting Comeback After Six Years
After enduring six years of setbacks, three surgeries, and recurring health battles, Tamil Nadu weightlifter M Raja is set to return to the international stage. The 25-year-old will compete in the 65kg category at the Commonwealth Senior, Junior and Youth Championships scheduled in Ahmedabad from August 24 to 30.
Tumblr media
Raja’s last international outing was at the 2019 Commonwealth Championships in Samoa, where a ligament tear in his right elbow abruptly halted his career. Despite immediate surgery and months of rehabilitation, his recovery was repeatedly derailed by injuries and health complications, including appendicitis, jaundice, and knee surgery.
“I’ve faced years of pain, but this is my chance to prove myself again,” said Raja, who now trains under India’s head coach Vijay Sharma in Modinagar.
A Journey Marked by Resilience
Born in Kovilpatti, Tuticorin, to a family of daily wage workers, Raja’s early life was marked by financial struggles. His father worked in the matchbox industry, while his mother supported the family as a cleaner. Despite these challenges and a loan burden of nearly ₹12 lakh, Raja’s determination kept him going.
Even when injuries forced him out of major competitions, including the 2022 Commonwealth Games, Raja continued training. Support from GoSports Foundation, physiotherapists, and his background in strength and conditioning helped him overcome multiple setbacks.
In 2023, Raja tore his knee ligament while setting national records but bounced back to claim gold in the 61kg category at the 2024 Nationals. This performance earned him a place in the national camp and eventually, selection for the 2025 Commonwealth Championships.
Looking Ahead
Now competing in the 65kg weight class, Raja says his focus is on winning medals for India and proving that perseverance pays off.
“I’ve been through surgeries, illnesses, and disappointments. But I will not let this opportunity slip. This comeback is for my family, my supporters, and myself,” he affirmed with determination.
Raja’s story reflects not just the journey of an athlete but also the resilience of someone who refused to let setbacks define his career. His return could inspire many young lifters across the country.

JSW Steel and POSCO Explore 6 MTPA Steel Plant Joint Venture in Odisha
In a move that could reshape India’s steel industry, JSW Steel Ltd and South Korea’s POSCO Group have signed a non-binding agreement to jointly explore the development of a six million tonnes per annum (MTPA) integrated steel plant. The proposed project would be executed under a 50:50 joint venture, with Odisha emerging as the frontrunner for the site location.
While Odisha is currently the preferred choice, both companies will carry out a detailed feasibility study covering land availability, raw material supply, investment structure, and regulatory clearances before reaching a final decision.
Tumblr media
Strengthening a Global Partnership
This initiative builds on the October 2024 memorandum of understanding (MoU), where JSW and POSCO agreed to collaborate on a five MTPA project in Odisha while also exploring joint opportunities in renewable energy and electric vehicle (EV) battery materials.
Executives from both companies underlined the strategic significance of this tie-up.
Jayant Acharya, Joint MD & CEO of JSW Steel, emphasized that blending JSW’s strong domestic project execution with POSCO’s global technological expertise could create a world-class steel manufacturing hub serving both India and international markets.
Lee Ju-tae, President of POSCO Holdings, highlighted India’s role as a future driver of global steel demand, noting that the collaboration reflects long-term trust and a shared vision for industrial growth.
Industry Significance
Industry experts believe the project could strengthen India’s steel-making capacity, support the government’s plan to boost domestic production, and position the country as a global hub for industrial output and steel exports.
For POSCO, the move also represents a renewed push into India, following earlier setbacks due to land acquisition hurdles in Odisha over a decade ago. If successful, the plant would become one of the largest Indo-Korean industrial collaborations in recent years.
Looking Ahead
With both companies now entering the assessment phase, the final investment decision is expected after completion of the feasibility studies. If implemented, the 6 MTPA project would not only accelerate India’s steel growth trajectory but also strengthen bilateral economic ties between India and South Korea.

Daily Evening Slip Tests Made Mandatory for Class 12 Students in Tiruchy
In a move aimed at boosting academic outcomes and ensuring better board exam performance, the Tiruchy Chief Educational Officer (CEO) has mandated daily evening slip tests for all Class XII students in government and aided higher secondary schools.
The initiative, which was introduced on a pilot basis last year, is now being rolled out across 250 schools, covering more than 22,000 students in the district. Officials say the strategy is designed to improve writing practice, subject knowledge, and exam preparedness throughout the academic year.
Tumblr media
Systematic Testing Approach
While classroom teaching continues as per the annual schedule, evening slip tests provide a structured platform for reinforcement and revision. The tests are set by subject teachers, compiled into a common question bank, and circulated to schools to maintain uniformity.
Format: 25–30 marks (sometimes up to 50), primarily short-answer questions.
Frequency: Conducted daily, with subjects tested on a rotational basis.
Focus: Lessons completed in the syllabus sequence, not just the day’s teaching.
“This ensures students are always exam-ready and helps in long-term retention,” said an education department official.
Supporting Students at Risk
The system is particularly aimed at helping nearly 700 students who failed in Class XI but advanced to Class XII through supplementary exams. Officials believe the frequent practice will raise confidence levels and reduce failure rates.
A teacher from Syed Murtuza Thagaisal Higher Secondary School, where over 250 students take these tests daily, said the initiative also benefits those preparing for competitive exams. “With portions completed systematically in class and slip tests reinforcing them, students get continuous revision and stronger subject clarity,” the teacher noted.
Proven Results and Future Goals
During last year’s pilot run, the district’s pass percentage saw a 1% increase. With full-scale implementation this year, officials expect a sharper rise. Teachers also observed that regular testing improved time management, writing speed, and problem-solving skills.
“The slip tests will not only help students secure pass marks but also strengthen their preparation for higher studies and entrance exams,” said a senior official.
Education authorities describe this as a district-level innovation, focused on consistency and discipline, that could eventually be replicated across other parts of Tamil Nadu.

Southern Tamil Nadu Rises as South India’s Emerging Export Hub
Southern Tamil Nadu is rapidly transforming into South India’s next major industrial and export hub, powered by fresh global investments, new-age infrastructure, and government-backed logistics initiatives. The region, long considered an industrially underdeveloped stretch, is now evolving into a strategic economic corridor spanning Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Kanniyakumari, Virudhunagar, Tenkasi, and Madurai.
Tumblr media
Big-Ticket Investments and Job Creation
At the recent investors’ conference, the state government signed MoUs worth ₹30,100 crore, with a promise of 46,450 jobs for the southern districts. Alongside, MSMEs pledged an additional ₹1,261 crore, creating 1,000 more jobs.
The arrival of VinFast, the Vietnamese EV giant, at Thoothukudi has been a game-changer. Under the Naan Mudhalvan skill programme, 350 local youth have been trained, with 250 already working at the company in training capacities.
Other mega projects in the pipeline include:
Royal Golden Eagle (Singapore): ₹4,953 crore investment in a man-made fibre facility in Thoothukudi.
Hwaseung Enterprises (South Korea): ₹1,720 crore footwear manufacturing plant at Gangaikondan, Tirunelveli.
Thoothukudi Space Park: Spanning 250 acres with a dedicated shipbuilding division.
Agri Export Push: A moringa export facility worth ₹5.59 crore and a zonal unit of the Tamil Nadu Food Processing and Agri Export Promotion Corporation in Tirunelveli.
Logistics Overhaul to Power Exports
Industries Minister TRB Rajaa highlighted that the state’s 10-year logistics master plan is central to unlocking the south’s potential. Key initiatives include:
Multi-modal logistics parks in Madurai and Thoothukudi.
An air cargo complex in Thoothukudi for high-value exports.
Better road and rail connectivity to hinterland hubs like Coimbatore and Tiruppur.
Port Rivalry: VOC vs Vizhinjam
Southern Tamil Nadu’s rise is reshaping maritime trade, with VOC Port in Thoothukudi and Vizhinjam Transshipment Hub in Kerala competing for cargo dominance.
Vizhinjam Port, a public–private venture between Adani Ports and the Kerala government, has already handled 395 ships and 840,000 TEUs in under a year, including mega vessels like the MSC Irina. Its natural draft of 20+ metres allows berthing of ultra-large container ships without dredging. A ₹10,000 crore Phase II & III expansion starting in October will triple its crane capacity.
However, Vizhinjam lacks a strong industrial hinterland, depending heavily on Tamil Nadu and Karnataka for cargo sourcing.
The cancellation of the ₹27,000 crore Enayam transshipment project in Kanniyakumari has further boosted Vizhinjam’s position, while Tamil Nadu is doubling down on VOC Port.
VOC Port’s Expansion Drive
VOC Port, though constrained by draft limitations, has initiated upgrades:
Berth deepening to 14.2 metres.
Wider turning circle for larger vessels.
11.5 hectares reclaimed for storage and green cargo operations.
Thoothukudi MP Kanimozhi has pushed for the ₹7,055 crore Outer Harbour Project to position VOC Port as a transshipment hub capable of competing with Colombo and Vizhinjam.
Currently, 95% of Thoothukudi’s containers are transshipped via Colombo, with the remaining 5% through Vizhinjam. Improved connectivity could gradually shift some volumes toward Vizhinjam, though VOC’s diverse cargo mix and strong manufacturing base make it more resilient.
Southern TN’s Strategic Edge
Vizhinjam’s proximity to the busy Suez–Far East route (just 10 nautical miles away) could cut India’s reliance on Colombo, which currently handles 70% of India-bound transshipment cargo. Yet, higher land costs in Kerala may push port-related industries like SEZs, warehouses, and logistics hubs into Tamil Nadu’s southern districts.
Industry experts note that while Vizhinjam is poised to dominate transshipment, VOC Port remains a gateway port with industrial backing, making the two ports more complementary than rivals.
Anchoring Tamil Nadu on Global Trade Routes
With ₹30,000+ crore in new investments, port upgrades, and logistics infrastructure in the pipeline, southern Tamil Nadu is steadily positioning itself as South India’s next export hub. This transformation is expected to not only boost local employment but also anchor India’s role in global trade networks, reducing reliance on foreign ports and strengthening economic resilience.

Teynampet-Saidapet Flyover Becomes Tamil Nadu’s Costliest at ₹195 Crore per km
Tumblr media
The Tamil Nadu Highways Department’s ambitious Teynampet-Saidapet flyover has set a new record as the most expensive elevated corridor ever built in the state. With an average construction cost of ₹195 crore per kilometre, the 3.2-km stretch has surpassed similar projects by both the State and National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), drawing significant attention for its soaring budget.
A First-of-its-Kind Engineering Feat
Touted as India’s first elevated flyover built directly above an underground metro tunnel, the project is designed to decongest one of Chennai’s busiest arterial stretches on Anna Salai. The four-lane corridor, executed by J Kumar Infraprojects, is expected to cut travel time between Teynampet and Saidapet from 40 minutes to just 10 minutes, easing bottlenecks at seven major intersections including Nandanam, Eldams Road, and CIT Nagar.
According to officials, nearly 2.45 lakh passenger car units pass through this corridor daily, making the flyover a crucial traffic-easing solution.
Escalating Project Costs
Initially pegged at ₹482 crore in April 2022, the project cost was revised to ₹525 crore in 2023 before ballooning by 18% within a year to touch ₹621 crore. This makes the flyover nearly 50% costlier than NHAI’s six-lane elevated projects, which usually average around ₹120-₹130 crore per km.
By comparison, other recent four-lane flyovers in Chennai were built at much lower costs:
Koyambedu Flyover (2021) – ₹95 crore per km
Medavakkam Flyover (2022) – ₹100 crore per km
Madurai-Natham Elevated Corridor (NHAI, 6.9 km) – ₹100 crore per km
Why the High Cost?
Highways officials attribute the inflated expenditure to the unique engineering challenges of constructing above a live metro tunnel. Key cost drivers include:
Soil Stabilisation & Micro-Piling: Since shallow foundations were unfeasible, advanced micro-piling techniques were adopted. Geosynthetic materials like geogrids and geocells were used for stability.
Utility Relocation: The corridor passes through densely built urban stretches, requiring relocation of underground cables, pipelines, and other utilities.
Metro Safety Precautions: With the Chennai Metro’s underground line running 17–18 metres below Anna Salai, flyover foundations had to be drilled 7 metres deep with specially designed pillars and portal frames to prevent stress on metro infrastructure.
The project involves 69 pillars above the metro stretch, 22 along the non-metro alignment, and 41 portal frames across Teynampet and Nandanam stations. As of July 2025, nearly 30% of the work has been completed, according to official reports.
Comparisons with NHAI Projects
Interestingly, NHAI projects—usually built under Public-Private Partnership (PPP) models—are known to be more expensive than state-funded projects. However, in this case, the Teynampet-Saidapet corridor has overtaken them in per-km cost.
For instance, the proposed 18.5 km six-lane elevated corridor between Kilambakkam and Maraimalainagar is budgeted at ₹3,450 crore (₹188 crore/km), while upcoming Maduravoyal-Outer Ring Road and Sriperumbudur elevated corridors are estimated at ₹160 crore/km.
Industry experts suggest that despite inflation and annual price escalations of 5–7%, state highways projects typically cost less than NHAI ventures unless executed under extraordinary conditions—a category into which this flyover squarely falls.
A Landmark for Chennai’s Infrastructure
While questions remain about its cost efficiency, the Teynampet-Saidapet elevated corridor is set to be a landmark project in Chennai’s urban transport network. Once completed, it is expected to significantly reduce congestion on Anna Salai, enhance commuter safety, and set a new benchmark for urban flyover engineering in India.

Younger Generation Must Learn from Leaders’ Lives, Says Venkaiah Naidu
Tumblr media
Former Vice-President M. Venkaiah Naidu stressed the importance of inspiring today’s youth with the life stories of great leaders and their values in public service. Speaking at the Dr. Navalar and Era Sezhiyan Award function held at VIT Chennai on Tuesday, Naidu highlighted the pressing need for ethical conduct in political and public life.
Presenting an award to Dr. Karan Singh, former Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Naidu reflected on how the principles and discipline of past leaders could serve as a guiding light for future generations. Dr. G. Viswanathan, Founder and Chancellor of VIT, was also present at the ceremony.
“We are the world’s largest parliamentary democracy and should take pride in it,” Naidu remarked. “However, with growing public disillusionment, it is vital for legislators to ensure the smooth functioning of Parliament. Decisions taken there must be respected by all,” he urged.
Naidu called on lawmakers to uphold parliamentary traditions, restore trust in democratic institutions, and set an example for young people by demonstrating integrity and responsibility in their roles.

New Income Tax Bill 2025 Clarifies Rules on Rental Income and Home Loan Deductions
Tumblr media
The long-debated Income Tax Bill 2025, passed by Parliament on Tuesday, brings long-awaited clarity on the taxation of rental income and deductions available for homeowners. The legislation, set to replace the six-decade-old Income Tax Act, 1961, will come into effect from April 1, 2026.
When the Bill was first tabled in February, property owners raised concerns over possible changes in how rental income would be computed—particularly whether tax would be levied on the gross annual rent or the net annual value after municipal tax deductions. There was also confusion about whether pre-construction interest deductions would continue to be available for let-out properties.
Experts have now confirmed that the new law maintains the existing framework.
“The Bill has now made it explicit that the standard 30% deduction will be calculated on the net annual value after municipal tax deductions,” said CA Ashish Niraj, Partner at A S N & Company. “It also clarifies that pre-construction interest deductions apply to both self-occupied and rented properties.”
This clarification aligns with the provisions under the old Act, where rental income tax is based on net annual value and homeowners can claim interest deductions on home loans. For under-construction properties, pre-construction interest can still be claimed in five equal instalments starting from the year the property is completed and possession is taken.
For example, if a homeowner borrows in 2025 for a property completed in 2028, the interest accrued during the pre-construction period (2025–28) will be divided equally over the next five years, in addition to the regular deductions.
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, speaking during the Rajya Sabha discussion, said the new Bill not only modernises India’s tax regime but also removes ambiguities that had caused anxiety among taxpayers.
The Income Tax Bill 2025 marks one of the most significant overhauls in India’s taxation framework in decades, aiming to streamline processes while ensuring fairness for property owners and individual taxpayers.

SpiceJet Boosts Winter Operations with Five More Boeing 737s Under Damp-Lease
Tumblr media
In a strategic move to meet soaring travel demand, SpiceJet has finalized a damp-lease agreement for five additional Boeing 737 aircraft, set to join its fleet ahead of the Winter 2025 schedule.
The low-cost airline currently operates 13 Boeing 737s and six regional jets, while 34 of its 53 aircraft remain grounded, according to aviation data from Planespotters.com. This latest deal follows a similar lease announcement on July 25, when the airline confirmed plans to add five leased planes to its operations.
Most of the newly leased aircraft are expected to arrive by October 2025, with some joining earlier. They will remain in service until May 2026, covering both the peak winter travel season and the initial months of the summer rush.
In damp-leasing, the operational responsibilities are shared between the aircraft’s lessor and the airline, enabling a faster entry into commercial service compared to traditional dry leasing.
“The additional Boeing 737s will strengthen our fleet readiness for the busiest travel period of the year,” the airline said in a statement.
SpiceJet also confirmed it is in advanced discussions for further fleet expansion ahead of the winter schedule, which begins each October.
This expansion is seen as part of the airline’s efforts to stabilize operations, improve flight availability, and prepare for high passenger volumes during the festive and holiday seasons.

Akash Deep’s Breakthrough Tour: How Self-Belief, Support, and Resilience Shaped His Rise
Tumblr media
Indian pacer Akash Deep has turned heads with his remarkable debut tour of England, producing performances that instantly marked him as one of the brightest prospects in Indian cricket. A 10-wicket haul in one match and a crucial half-century in another were not just statistical highlights — they were defining moments in his career.
For Akash Deep, the journey was made smoother by the people around him. He credits head coach Gautam Gambhir, who constantly pushed him to realize his full potential. “Gautam bhai always tells me, ‘You don’t know what you’re capable of.’ He believes in me more than I believe in myself,” Akash recalled.
Equally important was the support of new skipper Shubman Gill, who Akash described as calm, tactically sharp, and encouraging. Having played under Gill in domestic cricket, Akash said the transition at the international level felt natural.
Despite playing in England for the first time, Akash felt the conditions were far from the stereotypical seaming and swinging pitches. He adjusted his lengths to suit surfaces that, at times, felt more like subcontinental tracks. Preparation, he emphasized, was key — with net sessions often focused on specific opposition batters, regardless of who he was actually bowling to in practice.
Injuries have been a hurdle, with Akash missing games due to niggles in both Australia and England. However, he remains determined to stay fit and accept unavoidable risks on the field.
Off the field, the tour was emotionally challenging as his sister, Akhanda Jyoti, battled cancer back home. Returning from England, his first priority was to meet her. “She was happy following my matches. Good performances made her smile, even during tough treatment days,” he shared.
Akash also fulfilled a personal dream — buying a luxury SUV — a far cry from his early days playing tennis ball cricket in Durgapur for minimal earnings. Yet, material gains remain secondary to his passion for cricket. “Cars and possessions make you happy for a while, but cricket is my true focus. My goal is to keep improving every day,” he said.
From Bihar’s Sasaram to the Oval in London, Akash Deep’s story is one of persistence, adaptability, and the power of belief. If his debut tour is any indication, Indian cricket may have found not just a reliable pacer, but a player built for the long haul.

Madras HC Directs TN Government to Act on GCC Conservancy Workers’ Protest
Tumblr media
The Madras High Court has instructed the Tamil Nadu government to take appropriate legal action against sanitation workers of the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) who have been on strike for 13 days, demanding that the civic body drop its plan to privatise conservancy operations in Zones V and VI.
A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Manindra Mohan Shrivastava and Justice Sunder Mohan issued the order while hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by D. Thenmozhi. The judges observed that the strike was being conducted without prior approval from relevant authorities and directed the state to act with restraint while removing workers from unauthorised protest sites.
However, the court clarified that the workers retain the right to demonstrate at officially designated venues for protests.
Government Seeks Peaceful Resolution
Representing the state, Additional Advocate General J. Ravindran told the court that the government did not wish to escalate tensions with the striking workers, who belong to economically weaker sections. He requested that they disperse peacefully, emphasising that the administration stands in solidarity with their welfare needs but cannot allow protests in non-approved areas.
Public Disruption Concerns Raised
Senior counsel V. Raghavachari, appearing for the petitioner, argued that the strike was blocking both the road and pavement outside the historic Ripon Building, creating traffic congestion and inconvenience for the public.
Countering this, advocate Sankarasuppu, representing K. Bharathi in an implead petition, maintained that GCC employees have the democratic right to protest in front of the Ripon Building. He informed the court that 13 rounds of talks had been held with a minister and that the dispute might be resolved within a couple of days. He also noted that an industrial dispute had been filed by the Uzhaippor Urimai Iyakkam union, which is leading the strike.
Possible Relocation of Protest
Following the court’s order, a senior GCC official said peace talks would be initiated with union representatives, with suggestions to move the protest to an approved location, likely near Rajarathinam Stadium in Egmore. If the workers refused, further steps would be taken in line with the court’s directive.
Shortly after the ruling, ministers K. N. Nehru and P. K. Sekarbabu, GCC Mayor R. Priya, Commissioner J. Kumaragurubaran, and other top officials met at the Ripon Building to engage directly with the workers’ representatives in an effort to break the deadlock.

DMK Slams Bihar’s Electoral Roll Revision, Alleges ‘Vote Theft’
Tumblr media
The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), in a district secretaries’ meeting led by party president and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin at Anna Arivalayam, adopted a resolution strongly criticising the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar and denouncing alleged incidents of “vote theft.”
The resolution underscored that the voter list serves as the foundation of the electoral process, and its precise, error-free preparation is essential to ensure elections remain transparent, impartial, and credible.
DMK leaders at the meeting expressed concern that any irregularities in the electoral roll revision process could undermine public trust in democratic institutions. They called for stringent measures to safeguard the integrity of the voter registration system, stressing that fair elections depend on accurate and accessible voter rolls.
The party’s statement adds to a growing chorus of political voices across the country seeking reforms in electoral oversight and greater accountability in the preparation of official voter lists.

Former AIADMK MP V. Maitreyan Joins DMK, Predicts Landslide Win in 2026
Tumblr media
Former AIADMK Rajya Sabha MP V. Maitreyan officially joined the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) on Wednesday, in the presence of Chief Minister M.K. Stalin at the party headquarters, Anna Arivalayam.
Shortly after the announcement, AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami declared Maitreyan’s expulsion from the party, marking a definitive break from his long-standing association with the opposition.
Addressing the media following his induction, Maitreyan expressed confidence in the DMK’s prospects for the upcoming 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. “The DMK will emerge victorious. The only uncertainty is about who will take second place,” he remarked, signalling his strong alignment with the ruling party’s vision.
Maitreyan’s political career spans several decades, including a long stint in the Rajya Sabha representing the AIADMK. His decision to join the DMK is being seen as both a personal political shift and a strategic move ahead of the next state elections.
With this high-profile defection, the DMK has further strengthened its political ranks, while the AIADMK faces the challenge of consolidating its base amid internal shake-ups.

Velachery Traffic Woes: Drain Work and Illegal Parking Snarl TNHB Colony Main Road
Tumblr media
Commuters navigating the TNHB Colony Main Road in Velachery are facing daily traffic bottlenecks, with residents blaming a combination of storm-water drain construction and rampant unauthorised parking in front of shops for the chaos.
The stretch, which serves as a vital link to the bypass road, is heavily used by motorists from Adambakkam and Maduvankarai looking to avoid the perpetually clogged Velachery Main Road near the Checkpost junction during peak hours.
Adding to the congestion is the growing number of commercial establishments and private schools along the road, particularly on the northern side of Velachery Lake. Parents dropping off children and vehicles parked haphazardly have narrowed the carriageway, leaving little space for smooth traffic flow.
Residents say the problem intensifies during rush hours, with queues of vehicles stretching for long distances. They have urged the city traffic police to implement strict enforcement measures, especially in curbing illegal parking near busy shopfronts.
Local civic authorities are also being called upon to expedite the storm-water drain work, which has further reduced the available road width and contributed to prolonged traffic delays.
With the road being a critical artery for Velachery-bound commuters, residents believe a coordinated effort between the Greater Chennai Corporation and traffic police is the only way to restore order and ensure safer, faster travel.
