Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Recap: June 15th/16th

So as some of you who read my tags may have guessed, I went to see the play again this week. I wanted to hit a nice round number before my first anniversary of seeing Cursed Child next Wednesday, and I’ve been hearing such good things about how the new cast are developing that I couldn’t resist. I was not disappointed.

I’d been told that the show is almost unrecognisable from how it was on the 24th and 25th of May, and while that is not entirely accurate, it is so much more than what it was. My impression, particularly on the 24th, was of something raw and skeletal, that needed filling out. The bare bones were all there, but there wasn’t much detail, simply because they hadn’t had very much time to explore. And now they’re 13 shows in, the detail is definitely coming.

I’m not going to do a full on line-by-line recap, but I have too much to say not to write something, so I think this will just be a summary of things I loved from each of the actors, and maybe a little bit about a couple of my favourite scenes. I’ll attempt to keep this short (wish me luck).

Cursed wands in depth

OK so I’ve been having a look at these wands, and noticed certain details which link to the characters. First up Albus.

Quote from designer Christine Jones on Pottermore: “I imagined that Albus would be able to find comfort in running his fingers across them the way you might rub a worry stone. He has a lot to sort out and I imagined his wand as a comfort as well as a magical force.”

Just take a look at those two lines of cherry blossom buds one of them detailed, one of them not. At first I tried to ignore it thinking it was just missed out detail, but the further you go down the row there are slightly more details there. If he was using them like a worry stone then the top one would be right by his thumb and I could see him going back to that line of buds each time.

So, Scorpius, and what a tale this wand tells! “Scorpius’s wand is more rough-hewn. There are dark patches and light patches, and in my mind the markings are the markings of time. I imagine he might have carved them himself as a way of forming his identity by marking time and his presence in the carvings.”

So there looks to be Roman numerals and also just lines almost like a tally linking to a passing of time, maybe to do with Astoria?

In some ways it feels like a school notebook with doodles, red markings around the darker wood lower down and an A-. Again is this a reference to Astoria? Or Albus? Did Albus write it on there as a joke? Did Scorpius write it on their during their time apart?

The lower dark areas of wood seem to show maybe the whole wand was once dark and that it has been stripped away to the lighter wood beneath. The top darker patches however, seem to me like burns possibly to make the wand look darker again?

It would seem that whittling your wand, carving marks in it and perhaps burning it? Shows how truly troubled Scorpius as a wand is a truly personal thing and is an extension of the person in a way. He hides behind so much humour and when we finally see how hurt and scarred he is by everything that happens to him. It feels like studying his wand shows all of that pain in one object.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Fic: Another Blanket Scene

When Albus gets home at the end of fourth year, the burned remains of the blanket are still lying on his bed.

The other night, I started wondering what would happen if Albus came home at the end of his fourth year and found the blanket still on his bed. I was going to just write out my headcanon, but it ended up becoming a fully fledged fic.
