“i always have time for you.” his heart pounds inside the cage of his chest and his fingers only tousle his mess of curls even further, but the cheeky grin that spreads across his lips is no less charming. in fact, it’s almost casual, despite the not so casual slip of the tongue. “besides, it wouldn’t be a marques party if i didn’t say fuck it and did whatever i wanted, right?” she smiles up at him. no. she’s beaming. she’s glowing. it’s always been his favourite smile of hers. it’s cat in all her glory but more; like she’s been dialled up to eleven, like she’s been plugged in and lit up, like she’s been stuffed with sunshine. it’s his smile. her hand grasps his and he lets her; greedy for anything he can get. it’s instinct, the way his fingers find the spaces between hers, the way his warm palm presses flush against hers. she pulls him down the hall and he follows, more then willing. he spreads his free arm wide and laughs. “take me away, kit cat. i’m all yours.”

* it wasn’t surprising that catalina’s heart would flutter every time he’d utter her name from his lips or crack that trademark hanler smile at her, the one that could make anyone melt instantly. there’s a warm familiarity as their skin entwines, her palm pressed upon his as their fingers entangle themselves with each other. this was a dangerous game that she was playing & catalina doesn’t have the heart to drag hanler through yet another mess because her feelings are unsettled. how could he even look at her, let alone hold her hand after everything she had put him through ? but as the words spill from his brims, all concern lifts off her. i’m all yours. she doesn’t hesitate at his words, instead she soaks every syllable of it up. her grasp doesn’t leave his until she reaches her destination, in fact -- it grows tighter the longer she’s holding on. they’ve climbed about five flights of stairs until they reach the roof, catalina, in her true rebellious fashion, pulls out a bobby pin from her hair to pick the lock of the door so they can continue all the way to the top. ‘ remember when we used to ditch algebra together and come here all the time ? it’s kinda’ like the best place to be if you wanna’ get away from everything , plus . . . it reminds me of you. ’ she’s almost rambling, remembering that they’re not actually together anymore. ‘ and can you believe they started locking this place up ? so rude. ’

it was moments like these that hanler was reminded with staggering clarity, that he did indeed still have a heart. a beating, bleeding heart. it was right there, living inside his ribcage no matter how hard he tried to deny it. it flared to life, burning desperately inside his chest. alive. almost painfully so. she always had that effect on him, even now. he stowed her words away, letting her spoken promise warm his skin. he tipped his chin in a nod, a genuine smile blossoming in his full mouth. “good.” that traitorous heart drummed rhythmically inside his chest. “i’m holding you to that, kit cat. dec and i are already workin on another rager. i’ll save you a dance.” he was in no place to be dolling out promises of his own and yet here he was, doing it anyways. he never claimed to be smart. not when catalina was involved. he stuffed a hand inside the pocket of his jeans and lifted his broad shoulders in a shrug. “i don’t have anywhere to be now.” he grinned despite the lie. a physics lab was looming just on the other side of the shrill school bell, followed by a history lecture but he paid neither a lick of attention. “let’s catch up. you and me.”

‘ well i’m holding you to that , han bun , i know you’re always busy at these ragers , but i hope you can spare a couple minutes AND a dance for me. ’ she blushes, the red across her face paints a nostalgic tapestry across her cheeks. she tries to brush it off, but there was something golden about his presence around her, no matter how shattered her heart felt, he could easily piece it back together. catalina’s deep browns flicker towards the door of her impending class, despite not being a stranger to ditching class -- her mind hesitates for a second, wondering if spending this much time alone with someone that she was still clearly in love with was a good idea ? but alas, catalina leads with her heart and not her mind, her hand reaches for his as they are tucked into his pockets as she begins pulling him away from the group. ‘ i have just the place that we can catch up !  ’ she beams, and for a moment, just one minuscule moment, if was as if nothing had changed . catalina and hanler playing by their own rules and letting everyone else fade into the background.

she’s surprised at the lack of venom coming from her former friend. “are you kidding me?” she snaps, rolling her eyes. “when you apologize, cat. when you honestly tell me that you’re sorry for what you did to me.” she spins the combination to her locker, swinging the door open with more force than necessary. “until then, stay out of the way.”

‘ it was a mistake , i’m not gunna’ get on my knees and beg for your forgiveness . ’ she can’t seem to stop the harsh and suppressed words from spilling from her glossed lips, her eyes laced with resent but also a longing for her friend to accept her once again. ‘ when the judgmental looks and the shady tweets from your squad of fake-ass blondes stops then maybe i’ll try to stay out of queen tinsley’s way. ’

they’ve been here before. in a thousand different ways on a thousand different days. a year ago, they might have shared a teasing laugh, his arm looping around her shoulders and the promise of a wild party to close out the night. a few months ago, she might have fisted the soft fabric of his shirt and pulled him down for a breathless kiss, the promise of more more more always lingering. now, a sliver of space remains, separating them despite the illusion of an unburdened friendship they attempted to put up. her eyes flutter closed at his touch and he can’t help but suck in a breath, trapping it in his lungs for a moment too long. she might have leaned into his touch once. he’s long since abandoned the crowd at his back. they could have stayed or left or preformed an ancient ritual and it wouldn’t matter in the least. she had his full attention. he holds her gaze; his focus can’t help but wander, flicking around her features, lingering for a breath on her lips but always returning to those deep browns. “yeah, feels like forever since i’ve had you alone.” he’s spent the last few months keeping a close grip on that traitors heart of his. forcing it back into his chest, keeping it locked up. but they promised to stay friends, despite the end of their relationships. only friendship allows plenty of loopholes for those emotions to jump through. “i’ve missed seein’ you. i think rosaria misses you more, though. i think she’d encourage another party if it meant you’d come by.”

she had to physically restrain herself from spilling out the four words that her body ached to let go. i still love you. it’s true and her heart pains to know that it would always remain true. she can see the memories right in front of her, flickering in and out of her train of thought. running her fingers lazily through his curls or finding just about any excuse to prolong any opportunity that her skin could connect with his. there was something about his aura that was almost euphoric & despite the bubbling and accumulating pit of heart break that has settled in the back of her throat, she still craved his company, to hear his voice and be infected by that trademark marques smile. ‘ yeah . . i guess with senior year bein’ so crazy we never got a chance to . . catch up ?  ’ she begins, almost stuttering infront of him. it was seldom seen that catalina would be lost for words, that she would lose her charming confidence and sultry smile but the male in front of her managed to weaken her at every inch -- in the best way possible. ‘ no one misses rosaria more than me ! if you throw a party , i promise . . i’ll stop by -- i can’t stay away from her . . . . or you for too long. ’
