Religion Belief Runic Magic
Tumblr media
Some say the Runes are a mystic source of power and protection bestrode from the Ancient Gods. Others have sought and believably found spiritual harmony and co-existence with the natural earth. For many, asking for daily guidance by casting of the runes onto an outstretched cloth is a sacred act. To have ones destiny lay out before them, as prescribed by the gods is divine indeed. To understand how to cast and draw upon the mystical power, one must seek to explore its natural origins. Thought by most, the roots lie deeply with in ancient Norse Viking mythology and history. During a period known as The Dark Ages 600-800 BC, in the region of Scandinavia lived a society of people that had no need of a written language. They expressed ideas using a system of mantra sounds that corresponded to each of 24 symbols Elder Futhorkh Runes that formed complete thought based on their arrangement to each other. As the Vikings traveled and explored the neighboring regions, they encountered new and different tribes. Each, as they adopted the Futhorkh Runes into their own culture attached the symbols to their own alphabets and added new symbols for the alphabet that had none. The original runes along with the new symbols were widely adopted into their religious rites. Fearing that the true purpose of the runes would be discovered some of the original runes were altered, hidden or replaced with new symbols, by the ruling Rune Masters to confuse the reading and quench the power drawn from them from. In this study, you will learn how to recreate and activate the Original Elder Futhorkh Runes. Come to better understand their true purpose and meaning and how to cast and read the Runes. You will also learn how to set up 'The Sacred Alter' and conduct private and group 'Rune Ceremonies'.

Anthropology Of Religion
Tumblr media
Another wonderful volume from Judika Illes-this would make a wonderful addition to any library, whether pagan or non-pagan, for research or ritual work. The "Encyclopedia of Spirits" compiles many of the major deities and spirits from around the world, from both present and past cultures, such as China and Ancient Greece. A lot of the spirits, I have never heard of, mostly because I have never read or taken an interest in the cultures that they are part of. Each article for each spirit has been well researched and well presented with clear description. The profiles include their titles, alternative names, their place or culture of origin and rank within their pantheon (if there are), the different versions of the most well-known stories they are featured in, specific dates, places, plants and animals that are sacred to them (this only applies to deities), their manifestations, attributes and celestial bodies associated with them, as well as objects that would make appropriate offerings to them. Although, not all profiles include all of the things mentioned. At the end of each profile, Illes give names of deities or spirits associated, whether linked by familial connections or in stories. Illes also uses examples from modern popular culture, particularly when it comes to spirits from Japan, as they are often used as inspiration for popular cartoons and comic books, such as "Inuyasha" and "Yu Yu Hakusho". Some of the most well-known American television dramas also use spirits that are notorious for hauntings and creating mischief, both harmful and non-harmful. Some of these articles also include historical or cultural notes, particularly if deities were originally people who were 'deified' after death. Whether you a writer of fantasy or horror, a pagan or witch, or just a follower of the paranormal and supernatural, the "Encyclopedia of Spirits" is an absolute must-have.

Magick Spell For Psychic Protection
Tumblr media
This Spell is based on information aquired by The Witches Tree over many culminated years studying the Art of WitchCraft" This Spell is not about Aggression, it is one of Protection and Reflection. If you believe that you have been the victim of a Curse, it follows that you believe in Curses and the Power of Magick. It is therefore perfectly reasonable to believe that you can Protect yourself from Evil Forces with similar Powers. Simarly, if you believe you have been Cursed, then you have! Even if you havn't, your belief in the Curse will be reinforsed with every turn of Bad Luck. The purest form of Protection is to have faith in your actions and deeds therefore minimising the eventuality of another person wanting to aflict you by Cursing. Sometimes though, even a Good person will attract jealousy and resentment
Prepare yourself
You must first intitiate yourself before the Dietys. When the Moon is full you are invited to under-take the Self Intiation Dedication Rite You have now prepared your mind to accept devine guidence and are in a position of equality. It is important for you not to lower yourself to the sordid position of your adversary and refrain from initiating Curses and Black Magick. Words are audable statements of intent and as such are important ingredients to any Spell Castings. Choose your words carefully taking the time to incorporate reason and rhyme and Chant repeatedly whilst Casting your Protective Circle and Spell. A Pentacle in the form of a Necklace should be worn at all times. Protection will be enhanced by wearing additional Symbolic jewelery such as Finger/Thumb Rings, Ear-Rings, Wrist Ankle Braclets, in fact, any adournment that has a Religious significance such as Crystals, Gems or fashioned metal, stone, wood or bone symbols of significance. Protect your home and work-places by Sprinkling a Circle of Blessed Salt and Water completely around the property. Consecration should take place under a Full Moon. Offer the Salt to the Full Moon and say,
I CLEANSE AND BLESS THEE ELEMENT OF SALT
YOUR POWERS OF PURiTY I REVERENTLY EXAULT
BAD ENERGIES BE GONE AND ONLY GOOD REMAiN
THE FORCES OF RiGHT AND JUST, I ORDAiN
BLESS THiS SALT ACCORDiNGLY
THiS iS MY WiLL, SO MOTE iT BE Offer the Water to the Full Moon and say,
I CLEANSE AND BLESS THEE ELEMENT OF WATER
ALEXiA OF LiFE AND GREAT DiSiPATOR
BAD ENERGIES DiSOLVE AND ONLY GOOD REMAiN
THE FORCES OF RiGHT AND JUST, I ORDAiN
BLESS THiS WATER ACCORDiNGLY
THiS iS MY WiLL, SO MOTE iT BE Now mix the 2 elements together in a large open container such as a Cauldron or Metal Bucket and introduce the 3rd of Fire by heating from below. ( Not too hot )
Stir with a Wand of Willow and Chant
I offer Salt of the Earth to Cleanse and Deny I bring forth Water, Transient of Land and Sky
I call forth Fire to Cure through Heat
With Words I call to Air, my Alchemy complete Now, using your Hallowed Chalice, pour the Solution from the Cauldron to form a complete Circle around the place of Sanctity and Protection.~
CHANT
Circle of Magick, Protect with Concern Bad Vibes Resolve, Reflect and Return
REPEAT
ViSUALiZE A Dome Shaped force Field around your home ViSUALiZE a personal total exclusion Zone around yourself No-one, or No-thing may enter without your consent
ALSO
Daub a Petagram on the Gates and External Doors of your home using Oil of Frankinsence. Draw a Penagram on a piece of Paper or Card and place them under the Doormats in your home.

Remains Of Witch Discovered
Tumblr media
BY SCOTT MCMAN
The 800 year old remains of what archaeologists describe as a Witches skeleton was found in a dig of what is likely a Witches graveyard. The gruesome scene was discovered in Italy's Tuscany region and caused quite a stir as those at the dig unearthed more and more evidence to support their spooky speculation. The macabre theory was further supported by the fact that there were 7 nails driven through the corpse's jawbone. Other graves were quickly discovered to contain examples just as strange with one having 17 dice surrounding the body.Archaeologist Alfonso Forgione of L'Aquila University is convinced that it is in fact a graveyard for suspected Witches because of the fashion in which the women were buried.I guess these people weren't fun loving wine makers but torch and pitchfork vigilantes. I wonder what kind of evil powers these Witches had? Was it the power to make better Pizza than the local Pizza place? Did they bath in olive oil?I am the first to admit that I'm no expert at these olden time witch hunts but I have read some stories and found in many cases it had more to do with politics or infidelity or both than magic powers.A GRISLY END: 800-YEAR-OLD REMAINS OF WITCH DISCOVERED IN ITALIAN GRAVEYARD... WITH SEVEN NAILS DRIVEN THROUGH HER JAWThese are the 800 year old remains of what archaeologists believe was a witch from the Middle Ages after seven nails were found driven through her jaw bone. The grim discovery was made during a dig on what is thought to be a 'witches graveyard' after another woman's skeleton was found surrounded by 17 dice - a game which women were forbidden from playing 800 years ago.Experts say they believe the women are aged around 25 - 30 years old and were found buried in a simple shallow grave in the ground with no coffin or shroud. The macabre remains were found during a dig close to the sea at Piombino near Lucca in Italy's Tuscany region and the woman had seven nails through her jaw as well as another 13 nails surrounding her skeleton.Archaeologist Alfonso Forgione, from L'Aquila University, who is leading the dig, is convinced that the women were suspected witches because of the circumstances in which they were buried. He said: 'It's a very unusual discovery and at the same time fascinating. I have never seen anything like this before. I'm convinced because of the nails found in the jaw and around the skeleton the woman was a witch.'She was buried in bare earth, not in a coffin and she had no shroud around her either, intriguingly other nails were hammered around her to pin down her clothes.'This indicates to me that it was an attempt to make sure the woman even though she was dead did not rise from the dead and unnerve the locals who were no doubt convinced she was a witch with evil powers.'The second skeleton we have found was buried in a similar fashion but this time we found 17 dice around her - 17 is an unlucky number in Italy and also dice was a game that women were forbidden to play.'The way the bodies were buried would seem to indicate some form of exorcist ritual and the remains will be examined to see if we can establish a cause of death for them.'One puzzle that the archaeologists have been unable to explain is why the women if they were evil witches were buried in consecrated ground as the area is the site of an 800 year old church. He said: 'The only possible explanation is that perhaps both women came from influential families and were not peasant class and so because of their class and connections were able to secure burial in consecrated Christian ground.'The team is trying to find the burial place of the St Cerbonius, a bishop who died more than 1,500 years ago and who is the local patron saint of the area.

Anthropology Of Religion New Spellwork Boxes
Tumblr media
I've been busy finishing boxes for spell and ritual supply kits for the Botanica. The first is for a Spirit Work Kit made from a reclaimed antique Cedar sewing box that is beautifully made and beautifully lined with fabric, but just needed some love and exterior refinishing. The wood turned out gorgeous after I sanded it, oiled it, and gave it a good coat of beeswax with my homemade wood balm. I pyrographed the lid with a memento mori design inspired by old tombstones - the negative black space is all pyrographed making the white images raised. The box is filled with four of my incenses for working with spirits, charcoals for burning the incenses, Ancestor and Divination Oils, and Spirit Body Wash to cleanse oneself after working with spirits of the dead so they don't attach to you. I also made a box for a Pacific Northwest Shaman's Tool Kit using a three-sided triangular wooden box on which I pyrographed a design of the World Tree with each of the five sides representing the earth, sea, sky, upperworld, and underworld. I painted the pyrographed illustrations with eco-friendly coloured woodstains and then finished it with linseed oil and wood balm so it smells deliciously of cedar oil. The box contains two handcrafted cedar and sage smudge wands, an abalone shell to catch the ashes, Reversal Smudge for reversing spells and curses, Devil's Club for a tea drunk while fasting in order to commune with nature spirits, Red Ritual Face Paint for various shamanic rituals, and also my Earth-Sea-Sky elemental oil to open the door to the otherworlds for ritual. I also made a smaller box to store the herbs for this Weather Witch Herb Collection. The box is made with thin pliable wood and is almost like a leather satchel. I pyrographed the back with an original design of four forces of weather - sun, rain, wind, and lightning. The contents include fern leaves and heather to cause rain, lightning-struck oak wood to cause a lightning storm, broom to stir up winds, and lobelia to stop or prevent a storm. Weather witchcraft is become forgotten lore as some think it is either unethical or impossible. I've had quite good rainmaking results during droughts however - my forest needs its rain and the streams need to swell for the salmon to return each year. It used to be the duty of the local shaman or witch to ensure the natural patterns of weather when needed.

Witchcraft Hedge Witchery
Tumblr media
"Feathers and Tinctures" by Tracy J. Butler" The word hedgewitch comes from the Saxon word "haegtessa" meaning 'hedge-rider'. The hedge in hedge witchery is not a fence of shrubs and wildlife, but instead represents the border between our material world and the otherworld - the unknown. In trance-work (also called journey-work, journeying or just "travelling") the hedgewitch crosses this border in order to contact spirits on the other side to learn from them and bring back knowledge to the material world. A hedgewitch may also use this ability to enter trance in healing rituals, both physical and mental, and also to perform divination. These practices are very shamanistic in nature. Shamans from around the world would talk to spirits and ancestors through trancework in order to learn about specific chants and herbs for healing. Illnesses were sometimes thought to be caused by evil spirits and it was the shaman's job, along with the help of their spirit guides, to drive out the evil spirits from the afflicted person. These practices can be linked from the fairy doctors of the UK to the halaait of British Columbia. The hedgewitch is essentially a witch doctor with the difference being that their practices are usually based on European witchcraft most likely stemming from the spaewives, v"olvas, seidkona, and fairy doctors of our pagan ancestors. Hedgewitches use various methods to enter into trance including: entheogens (hallucinogens), meditation, breathing exercises, dancing, drumming, visualization, and others. Usually hedge witchery is not a path on its own, but instead is part of the practices of a cultural or traditional witch. The practices of contacting ancestors (both ancient and recently deceased family members), spirit guides (familiar spirits), the good folk, and others are all a part of traditional witchcraft practices. The use of entheogens is always controversial. There is evidence along with recipes for the use of hallucinogens by witches in the Middle Ages and later, one example being the use of flying ointments. Before then, psychoactive plants may have been used by our pagan ancestors in their religious rituals and ceremonies. (NOTE: Do NOT attempt to make and use a flying ointment unless guided by a professional herbalist or a "very" experienced practitioner, many of the ingredients are poisonous and harmful even just to the touch)
DISAMBIGUATION
The use of Hedge Witchery in this entry is not to be confused with the definition presented in Rae Beth's books, which is more akin to green witchcraft and Wicca.

Divinatory Esoteric And Occult Tarot
Tumblr media
Crafted in a fashion that seems to exude magickal and occult intent, this wooden chest is certainly one of the most distinctive to come through our doors, with little wonder as to why it was named for the town of Witches. Painted with a black finish, the chest is decorated with numerous metal accents that are riveted into its sides, providing a sort of border along its base. Its lid however, similarly accented with metal borders and rivets, is what makes it so distinctive. It has been pieced together in a pyramid shape, with a flat top, with each of its five sides further accented by a glistening metal pentagram. Not only does this shape hollow, allowing you to place more within the confines of the chest, but the shape is one that is powerful for channeling energy and magick, allowing you to help charge those items within with magickal energies or otherwise aid in your ritual magick. As such, it is a wonderful place for storing your herbs, gems, tarot decks, and other such ritual items on your altar. The whole box measures approximately 7 1/2" wide, 4 2/3" deep, and 5" high. With a metal latch for holding the lid closed, or even locking it, the internal compartment measures 5 3/4" wide, 3 1/2" deep, and 1 1/4" high, not including the cavity provided within the pyramid shaped lid that can help items such as tarot decks fit within.

Occult Magician Strength And The Devil All Walk Into Pub
Tumblr media
I am currently reading Rachel Pollack's - Tarot Wisdom and am trying to digest as much of it as I can, which means I am reading it slowly and one of the things that she mentions early on in the book is how the Major Arcana are positioned and then the links the individual cards have with each other. The picture below is how the Major Arcana is set out and is accepted by most traditions. The Fool which has the number of 0 sits outside of the Major Arcana so is on top of the grid. The associates and links of the cards go both horizontally and vertically. The three, seven card rows all have different meanings as the souls journeys through the Major Arcana and then there are links with the seven vertical rows as well. There is a lot written about the three stages of the souls transition (horizontally) and I may write about it later with my reflections but I was drawn to the vertical links and it got me thinking. So here are the first three cards. 1. The Magician - Card 1 2. Strength - Card 8 3. The Devil - Card 15 So what do these cards all have in common? What I came up with was MASTERY.
Mastery as defined in the dictionary means:
1. Possession of consummate skill. 2. The status of master or ruler; control: mastery of the seas. 3. Full command of a subject of study: Her mastery of economic theory impressed the professors. So each of these cards represents something that we all experience the need or want to master or control in our lives as some point. THE MAGICIAN is the master of his Tools, the elements and his own will power. He is an impressive expression of the male archetype. We all learn how to master tools, whether it be a for our profession, study or daily life. To drive a car we must learn and get our licence, to use the Internet and other technologies requires us to study and gain skills. This is an action card, an outward expression and to me the Magician always comes across as being in control and confidant. STRENGTH is the master of discernment to know when it is best to push and when it is best to sit back and be passive. When external strength is needed and when internal strength should be exercised. Strength knows force and power well but also knows that just because you can doesn't mean you should. For some strange reason Obi Wan Kenobi just popped into my head, he would be a good representation of Strength. THE DEVIL gives us the opportunity to master our own primal self and sometimes-harmful addictions. The Devil is about the material world and the chains it can so easily claim us with, this card is also about lust, power and abuse. This is not to say that The Devil is an all-together negative card, it is like magic itself, it just is, and it is the intent behind it that provides the final outcome. It is okay to enjoy the material world, to have some lust in your life and to have a good time but it is about keeping the balance, about knowing your limits and mastering your reaction to temptations. The Devil card is also about consciousness, are we in control are we the master of our actions, did we decide with active consciousness to act on our want or did it control us? Who is the real Master? So the first of the seven lessons is MASTERY, for me anyway. For those people who are familiar with the three major lessons of the Major Arcana here are the other correspondences for the cards.
The Magician - The Physical - Unconscious
Strength - Emotional - Subconscious
The Devil - Spiritual - Super Conscious

Gundestrup Cauldron
Tumblr media
The cauldron is a common tool, though not all modern Wiccans have one. The cauldron has a great deal of history and tradition associated with it, and for Wiccans, it is the vessel where magickal transformations occur, such as brewing and cooking, along with much more mystical purposes. It is also sometimes used to light a fire at certain ceremonies.
HISTORICAL AND MYTHOLOGICAL CAULDRONS
There are many cauldrons throughout world history, and they often take different shapes. Historically, the Gundestrup cauldron, found in Denmark, is a silver cauldron, dating back to approximately the first century, BCE. It may have had an initiatory or sacrificial role around that time. A more modern example would be the cauldron in which the Olympic flame burns during the Olympic Games. This ancient practice was revived at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin. Mythological examples of cauldrons include the Holy Grail. Though technically a chalice, and not a cauldron, it still is a vessel for magickal transformation, and so can be placed in this category. Other mythical cauldrons are the Cauldron of Dagda, from which no company ever went from it unsatisfied, and the Cauldron of Dyrnwch the Giant, which was said to be able to tell brave men from cowards.
WICCAN SYMBOLISM OF THE CAULDRON
Wiccans see the cauldron as a powerful symbol of the Goddess. It is the manifestation of fertility and femininity. It is associated with the element of water and the west, and has connections with reincarnation and rebirth. In modern Wicca, it is the tales of Cerridwen's cauldron that have the greatest impact on how the cauldron is viewed.
TIPS ON SELECTING A CAULDRON
Depending on the ritual, the cauldron may be used for different purposes. It spring or summer, it can be filled with water and flowers. In the winter, it might have a fire lit within it. For this reason, cauldrons should be made of cast iron, to resist heat. In addition, they should rest on three legs, and have a mouth smaller than the widest part of the cauldron, if one can be found. An iron lid is recommended. If it fits snugly, the lid can be used to douse the flames from a fire. These can be hard to find, but are definitely worth the search. The sizes are varied, so it is advised to choose one to suit the needs of the user. For example, a single practitioner probably doesn't require a cauldron with a diameter of two feet, while an entire coven may wish to invest in one this large. Cauldrons can be used for scrying if filled with water, since they are already dark enough to stop the reflection of light. The cauldron can also be used for brewing many different Wiccan potions, usually herbal in nature, but most use a pot on a stove today, simply for the convenience. The use of the cauldron has a long and varied history, from the magickal and ceremonial to the mundane. In Wiccan practice, it is a respected and well-used tool, embodying the very essence of femininity. First published at Suite101: The Cauldron in Wicca: The Cauldron's Role in Wiccan Practice Suite101.com http://www.suite101.com/content/the-wiccan-cauldron-a204147#ixzz1Sdx1c09i

Witchcraft Cunning Folk
Tumblr media
OTHER NAMES: "Cunning Man/Woman, Wise Woman/Man, Cunning Craft, Cunning Art, Pellar, Fairy Doctor, Spae Wife, Spaecraft, Mother Red Cap, Conjuror, Sorceror, Wizard, and others." DEFINITION & HISTORY Who better than to define Cunning Folk than Dr. Owen Davies, a researcher of witchcraft and the role of the Cunning Folk in the British Isles: "Cunning-folk, who were also known as wise-women, wise-men, conjurors and wizards, were an integral part of English society right up until the early twentieth century. Over the centuries hundreds of thousands of people must have consulted them regarding a wide range of problems, but particularly those concerning affairs of the heart, theft, sickness and most important of all witchcraft. They were multi-skilled, or at least professed to be so. They practised herbalism, treasure-seeking and love magic. They revealed the identity of thieves and divined the whereabouts of lost and stolen property. The more learned cunning-folk also practised astrology, while the less learned pretended to be masters of the art. The most lucrative aspect of their business was the curing of those people and animals who were thought to be bewitched, and also the trade in charms to ward off witches and evil spirits." (Source) A cunning person is essentially a traditional folk-magic practitioner from the United Kingdom. It is believed those who were literate drew upon the magical grimoires and chapbooks of the times to add to their repertoires with some cunning folk's reputations based solely on the grimoire they owned. Practices and services varied from region to region. The practices of a Cornish Pellar might be completely different when compared to that of their Scottish or Irish counterpart. In Scotland, and possibly other regions, the wise women and men were divided into two categories: those that could practice only harm (buidseach or "black magician"), and those that could practice only good (cailleach or "spae wife"). Depending on what service a person needed they would go to one or the other for a curse or a cure. However, having said that, both types of cunning crafters were known to perform curses, it depended on the individual's ethics. According to the 19th century Orkney folklorist, Walter Traill Dennison, the Orcadian wise-woman, or spae-wife, was said to possess: "all the supernatural wisdom, some of the supernatural power, without any of the malevolent spirit of witches... The women of this class were skilled in medicinal and surgery, in dreams, in foresight and second-sight, and in forestalling the evil influence of witchcraft. Such women were looked upon with a kind of holy respect." (Source) From the definition, many modern pagans may think of a cunning person as a witch, but in fact they were mainly called upon to protect from or undo spells of witchcraft. Before the witch trials when witchcraft was a constant threat to the peasant mind, a cunning person would have been hired to do workings against evil spirits, the evil eye, and any mischief or harm done by fairies. The fact that cunning folk have been in existence for over 500 years does not prove the existence of any unbroken witchcraft traditions or lines of witches as cunning folk were essentially individual practitioners and as stated above did not consider themselves to be witches. In regards to Liddell's "The Pickingill Papers: The Origin of the Gardnerian Craft", it is up to the reader to determine whether they believe Liddell and Eric Maple's claims that Gardner's Wicca originated from the practices of Pickingill's infamous nine covens. Some famous cunning folk, among many others, include Granny Boswell, Tamsin Blight (Tammy Blee), Biddy Early, James Murrell, and George Pickingill.
TODAY'S CUNNING FOLK
In modern publishing the terms "hedgewitchery" and "hedge witch" are often mistakingly used to refer to cunning folk and their practices (see article on Hedge Witchery). Cunning folk are no longer an intrinsic part of British Isles society, but their services are still needed and called upon today. People still fall in love and get heartbroken, need healing or divination services, and desire for things to go their way when attempting to get a new job or house. The people who call upon the services of a wise man or woman are usually non-magical folk seeking a little magical help. There is also a wonderful interest in and revival of the old practices being taken up by newer generations. An example of a modern cunning man is Cecil Williamson, West Country Witch and the original founder of the Boscastle Witchcraft Museum - and while he may not have called himself such when he was alive - he fit the bill perfectly. Some good examples of modern wise women include Gemma Gary, a charm-maker and cunning woman in Cornwall, and Cassandra Latham, a village wisewoman also in Cornwall.

Forest Spirit Salve Wortcunning Witchery
Tumblr media
It feels so good to put my hands in the earth again and feel her give way and the roots release. It feels so good to be able to go outside without a jacket or a sweater due to the warm wet chinook winds. It tickles this witch's heart to be able to run outside in my slippers into the forest and gather the herbs I am missing for this oil or that unguent. That's right, the witch is working again. After a month of research and writing new recipes I'm now in the process of crafting physical products to sell and ain't foolin' around this time. There are jars of oils buried at the foot of trees at crossroads in the wood, unguents to be consecrated to their purpose in rituals calling gods and spirits, incenses ground and wrapped with care in earthy handmade papers Today I went to the old tree that is half Maple half Cedar growing between two three-way crossroads and buried jars of a world tree oil, Toadman's salve, and Forest Spirit Salve at its roots. I blessed them with my Hawthorn stang and will return tomorrow to dig them up from their shallow grave of roots, worms, insects, and decades of rotting wood and leaves. Yesterday I made and packaged batches of my two new incense recipes. The first is Forest Smoke, an exquisite blend of bee propolis resin, balsam poplar resin, and pine resin -each representing a realm of earth, sea, and sky. The second blend is Sorcerer's Smoke, a darkly shamanic incense from the ancient forests of Northern Europe blending native botanicals and resins with black henbane and mugwort leaf. You can check them out in my Etsy shop. And now I shall collapse in my big comfy chair and plan a Spring Equinox rite for my ritual group.

Compendium Maleficarum By Francesco Maria Guazzo
Tumblr media
This extraordinary document, considered one of the most important manuals ever compiled on witchcraft, offers striking insight into the early 17th century mind and society`s attempts to cope with the evils it saw manifested in sorcery. A collection of writings by the Ambrosian monk Francesco Maria Guazzo, the Compendium comprehensively and penetratingly describes the entire practice and profession of witchcraft. First published in 1608, the commentaries came at an appropriate time. Contemporary accounts noted that witchcraft and sorcery had "spread in all directions," leaving "no country, town, village, or district, no class of society" free from the practice. This probing work, by a distinguished writer and scholar who perceived the devil as an evil force seeking to destroy men`s bodies and souls, was an attempt to help man live piously and devoutly, thus guarding against such seductions and manipulations. reproduced from a rare limited edition published in 1929 and supplemented with may erudite editorial notes by Reverend Montague Summers, the Compendium Maleficarum includes profoundly serious discussions of witches` pacts with the devil, finely detailed descriptions of witches` powers, poisons and crimes ; sleep-inducing spells and methods for removing them, apparitions of demons and specters, diseases caused by demons, and other topics. Also examined in detail are witches` alleged powers to transport themselves from place to place, create living things, make beasts talk and the dead reappear; witches` use of religion to heal the sick, laws observed by witches to cause and cure illness, differences between demoniacs and the bewitched, and other subjects from the realm of the supernatural. Here is an encyclopedic tract of incalculable worth to the historian and student of the occult and anyone intrigued by necromantic lore, sabbats, sorceries and trafficking with demons.

TITLE: Bringing the Solar System to Life AUTHOR: Sally Spooner, Sunset Elementary School, Cody, Wyoming GRADE LEVEL/SUBJECT: 2-3 Science OVERVIEW: The Solar System is a very abstract concept for primary age children. This activity was designed to show children the ideas of "revolution" and "rotation". PURPOSE: This Science activity, part of a unit on the Solar System, uses role playing to demonstrate the universe and its connection to the sun. OBJECTIVES: As a result of this activity, students will be able to: 1. Make models to represent the planets in comparative size. 2. Use their models to demonstrate revolution and rotation of the planets around the sun. 3. Give definitions of "revolution", "rotation", and "orbit". MATERIALS: one yellow punch ball nine balloons of different colors chalk or string to mark orbits resource material to check orbits of the nine planets ACTIVITIES AND PROCEDURES: 1. Children will blow up a yellow punch ball to its fullest and balloons of nine different colors to sizes representing the nine planets. 2. Take the class outside or go into the gym inside. Have nine paths marked on ground or floor with string or chalk. 3. Have one student hold each balloon. Another student will hold the yellow punch ball which represents the sun. 4. The "sun" stands in the middle of a circle. The other children take their places on the marked paths. Teacher will need to give each child the name of his/her planet and direct him/her to the correct place. 5. Begin the experiment by having children walk in their path or "orbit" around the sun. Stress that the planets never leave their own orbits. This travel around the sun is called "revolution". This term should now be introduced. 6. After the children have orbited the sun once, bring in the added concept of "rotation". While moving around the sun, the children should also start to spin around like tops. (Caution them against becoming dizzy.) This demonstrates "rotation". Tell children that it takes one year for the earth to revolve around the sun, and it takes one day for the earth to rotate on its own axis. 7. Point out that "rotation" or spinning on one's own axis takes much less time than going all the way around the sun, "revolution." 8. Give all children in the class a chance to try the experiment. TYING IT ALL TOGETHER: After returning to the classroom, demonstrate the principle just learned with the globe. Let someone spin the globe and walk around a "sun" to show "rotation" and "revolution". For children who have trouble keeping "rotation" and "revolution" straight, here is a tip: the middle sound of "rotation" has the same vowel sound as "day" and it takes the earth one day to rotate. This same type of activity can be used to show the relationship between the moon and the earth. Role play is an excellent way to teach primary children and makes these abstract concepts come to life.

Mahavairocana Tantra
Tumblr media
Shingon Teaching Shingon is a form of Japanese Esoteric Buddhism, it is also called Shingon Mikkyo. This school was founded in 804 AD by Kukai (Kobo Daishi) in Japan. The teachings of Shingon are based on the Mahavairocana Sutra and the Vajrasekhara Sutra, the fundamental sutras of Shingon. Through the cultivation of three secrets, the actions of body, speech and mind, we are able to attain enlightenment in this very body. When we can sustain this state of mind, we can become one with the life force of the Universe, known as Mahavairocana Buddha. The symbolic activities are present anywhere in the universe. Natural phenomena such as mountains and oceans and even humans express the truth described in the sutras. The universe itself embodies and can not be separated from the teaching. In the Shingon tradition, the practitioner uses the same techniques that were used over 1200 years ago by Kukai, and have been transmitted orally generation after generation to the present. As Shingon Buddhists, there are three vows to observe in our lives: May we realize Buddhahood in this very life. May we dedicate ourselves to the well-being of people. May we establish the World of Buddha on this earth. Becoming a Buddha in This Very Life (Sokushin Jobutsu) The unique feature of this Shingon Teaching is that one does not become a Buddha only in his mind, nor does one become a Buddha after one has died. It means one is able to attain perfection of all of the qualities of a Buddha while one

Witchcraft The Witchs Reading List
Tumblr media
In total contrast to my previous post on putting down your books, here is my recommended reading list for both the complete newbie and experienced witch. There are many many more I would list, but they are for supplemental reading. If one reads the classics recommended first, you will be reading all the influences of the founders of modern Witchcraft and therefore will understand them and their craft better. Read these words knowing Gerald Gardner, Doreen Valiente, Alex Sanders, Robert Cochrane, Victor Anderson, and others read them before you. Some may consider them out of date, but don't listen to those people. You have to understand where we came from as Witches to understand where we are going. All you need to know is that yes, Frazer was wrong in his thesis that pre-Christian Pagans were more savage and primitive than Christians and their worship revolved solely around the agricultural cycle - but that the lore he collected by chance in pursuing his theory is invaluable and may not have been documented otherwise; yes Graves is a misogynist but he still made some great points about poetic myth, the gods, and syncretism (and loved shrooms); yes, you'll need a dictionary to read "The Secret Commonwealth", but it's short and an important work to understand that the early modern fairy-faith was an ancestor cult; the rest you should enjoy and will turn all the lightbulbs on in your brain.
LET'S BEGIN WITH THE CLASSICS:
* "Aradia or the Gospel of the Witches of Italy" by Charles G. Leland, 1899 * "The Fairy-Faith in Celtic Countries" by W.Y. Evans-Wentz, 1911 * "The Golden Bough" by James George Frazer, 1922 * "The History of the Devil: The Horned God of the West" by R. Lowe Thompson, 1929 * "The Greater Key of Solomon" edited by Samuel L. Macgregor Mathers, 1914 * "The Secret Commonwealth: An Essay on the Nature and Actions of the Subterranean (and for the Most Part) Invisible People, Heretofore Going Under the Name of Elves, Fauns, and Fairies" by Robert Kirk, 1691 * "The White Goddess: A Historical Grammar of Poetic Myth" by Robert Graves, 1966
THE MODERN CLASSICS:
Now that you know their influences - read their works. * "The Complete Art of Witchcraft: Penetrating the Secrets of White Magic" by Sybil Leek, 1971 * "Fifty Years in the Feri Tradition" by Cora Anderson * "High Magic's Aid" by Gerald Gardner, 1949 * "Mastering Witchcraft: A Practical Guide for Witches, Warlocks & Covens" by Paul Huson, 1971 * "Natural Magic" by Doreen Valiente * "Rebirth of Witchcraft" by Doreen Valiente * "Witchcraft for Tomorrow" by Doreen Valiente * "The Writings of Roy Bowers" (Robert Cochrane)
READ YOUR MYTHOLOGY:
Kerenyi and Eliade will blow your mind, Puhvel will make you pull out the dictionary again, and Dr. Davidson will be a refreshing breath of easily understandable air. * "Comparative Mythology" by Jaan Puhvel * "Encyclopedia of Spirits" by Judika Illes * "Gods of the Greeks" by Karl Ker'enyi, 1974 * "The Myth of Eternal Return" by Mircea Eliade, 1954 * "Myths and Symbols in Pagan Europe" by H.R. Ellis Davidson
SHAMANISM & SYNCRETISM:
To understand just how far back our practices as magical practitioners and spirit workers go one must explore the connections between modern Witchcraft, early modern Witchcraft, pre-Christian Paganism, Shamanism, and pre-Shamanism. * "Cunning-Folk & Familiar Spirits: Shamanistic Visionary Traditions in Early Modern British Witchcraft and Magic" by Emma Wilby, 2006 * "Singing With Blackbirds: The Survival of Primal Celtic Shamanism in Later Folk-Traditions" by Stuart A. Harris Logan, 2006 * "Shamanism: Archaic Techniques of Ecstasy" by Mircea Eliade, 1951 * "Shamans Sorcerers and Saints: A Prehistory of Religion" by Brian Hayden, 2003 * "The Way of Wyrd: Tales of an Anglo-Saxon Sorcerer" by Brian Bates, 1984 * "Witchcraft and the Shamanic Journey ("aka" North Star Road)" by Kenneth Johnson, 1999
HANDS-ON MAGIC:
A list of books to get your hands dirty, your kitchen messy, and give you lots of hands-on experience. Mickaharic is my homeboy - anything by him is excellent, but the two listed are his best. He draws from the many cultures living in North America. Valerie Worth's books are similar to his, but more witchy and less hoodoo. Reading her books is like reading the grimoire of your grandmother if she was a poet-witch. * "A Century of Spells" by Draja Mickaharic * "Complete Book of Incense, Oils & Brews" by Scott Cunningham * "Crones Book of Words" by Valerie Worth, 1971 * "Crones Book of Charms & Spells" by Valerie Worth, 2002 * "Hoodoo, Herb and Root Magic" by cat yronwode * "Magical Herbalism" by Scott Cunningham * "Spiritual Cleansing: A Handbook of Psychic Protection" by Draja Mickaharic
HERBALISM CLASS:
The only non-magical books on herbalism you'll ever need are "The Herb Book" and "The Herbal Medicine-Maker's Handbook". The magical herbalism books are a mixture of reference and learning how to work with the spirits of plants. * "Cunningham's Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs" by Scott Cunningham * "The Herb Book" by John Lust * "Herbal Medicine-Maker's Handbook: A Home Manual" by James Green * "Magical and Ritual Use of Aphrodisiacs" by Richard Alan Miller, 1985 * "Magical and Ritual Use of Herbs" by Richard Alan Miller, 1983 * "Pharmako Trilogy "by Dale Pendell * "Plant Spirit Shamanism: Traditional Techniques for Healing the Soul "by Ross Heaven & Howard G. Charing * "Witchcraft Medicine: Healing Arts, Shamanic Practices, and Forbidden Plants" by Claudia M"uller-Ebeling, Christian R"atsch, and Wolf-Dieter Storl, 2003 Many of the classics are available for free on Sacred Texts and Google Books - always check them first as well as your local public library before purchasing books. Read for free! The out-of-print books I've listed aren't very rare and shouldn't be difficult to find on the second-hand market. If you're lazy just search Amazon. If you're more determined try AbeBooks or FetchBook. "
