Follow Your Heart Into Action
Last week I had the pleasure of running into my friend, Curtis Reliford who assists those in need with food, clothing, and building materials. Since 2005, he has driven hundreds of thousands of miles to help people, including Katrina survivors, Standing Rock water protectors, and those on the Hopi and Navajo Reservations. Curtis' message is stated plainly in the name of his non-profit: Follow Your Heart Action Network. He told me that on a daily basis he asks his heart what he should do, and then he follows the instructions he receives rather than the voice of doubt.
Many of us are aware of a larger yearning in our hearts to make a difference, but aren't sure how that translates into the many small actions necessary to make that dream a reality. I recommend having a daily practice of morning meditation in which you ask your heart for instructions. Today, mine inspired me to share Curtis' story with you.
If you knew about Curtis' early life, you would probably see what a miracle it is that he has been able to accomplish all that he has. He wasn't handed a lot of advantages, but he has made the most of his greatest assets of love, compassion, creativity, charisma, and an ability to speak from the heart. Many people aren't aware of all of the assets they have that they could be using to make a difference. Usually, the heart knows much more than the head. Many of us dream of making a difference, but don't know how it could be possible and stop there. Curtis models how following the next small step guided by one's heart can create big results long-term. For example, he was inspired to begin painting his message of peace and generosity on his truck to bring awareness to his cause. And he often generates donations by blasting great music and dancing on top of his truck. I'm sure you wouldn't find this approach on a typical fundraising plan, but these are the actions Curtis' heart has guided him to do and it has allowed him to help thousands of people. Happy Black History Month! I wish you all the impact you were born to make. Love, Cynthia You can watch Curtis' TedX talk and donate to his non-profit here: www.santacruzpeacetrain.com

When the Goal Feels Impossible

If you're feeling angst about all that needs to be done to turn things around in the world (or just to achieve your goals), you're not alone. The enormity of it all can cause us to feel powerless or confused about where to focus our efforts.
I recently attended the California Leading on Climate event at World Affairs in San Francisco. I asked the speakers what they would say to someone who feels hopeless or overwhelmed by the magnitude of the work that needs to be done on environmental issues. One of their responses can help all of us when we lose faith in our ability to make a difference.
Ashley Conrad-Saydah (right), Deputy Secretary for Climate Policy at the California Environmental Protection Agency, pointed out that we are compelled to protect things we love. So, she suggested that if someone wants to protect the environment, they could spend more time in nature to increase their appreciation for it, and thereby their inspiration to take action. I too have found that love is one of the most powerful emotions for breaking through obstacles to taking action. Any time you feel stuck, overwhelmed, or discouraged, I recommend taking a moment to focus your awareness on your heart. Then ask your heart what it wants you to do. Or if you already know what you want to do, but have lost motivation, ask your heart why your goal matters. I can just about guarantee that your heart will inspire you to keep moving forward. And no matter what your purpose is, the world needs you to keep taking that next step! So, please keep going. Rest, but don't stop.
With love, Cynthia P.S. I currently offer one gift session per month to someone who is working to make a difference or who wants to clarify their purpose. Apply here
