TL;DR: almost all social platforms are stealing your art and use it to train generative AI (or sell your content to AI developers); please beware and do something. Or don’t, if you’re okay with this.

Which platforms are NOT safe to use for sharing you art:

Facebook, Instagram and all Meta products and platforms (although if you live in the EU, you can forbid Meta to use your content for AI training)

Reddit (sold out all its content to OpenAI)

Twitter

Bluesky (it has no protection from AI scraping and you can’t opt out from 3rd party data / content collection yet)

DeviantArt, Flikr and literally every stock image platform (some didn’t bother to protect their content from scraping, some sold it out to AI developers)

Here’s WHAT YOU CAN DO:

1. Just say no:

Block all 3rd party data collection: you can do this here on Tumblr (here’s how); all other platforms are merely taking suggestions, tbh

Use Cara (they can’t stop illegal scraping yet, but they are currently working with Glaze to built in ‘AI poisoning’, so… fingers crossed)

2. Use art style masking tools:

Glaze: you can a) download the app and run it locally or b) use Glaze’s free web service, all you need to do is register. This one is a fav of mine, ‘cause, unlike all the other tools, it doesn’t require any coding skills (also it is 100% non-commercial and was developed by a bunch of enthusiasts at the University of Chicago)

Anti-DreamBooth: free code; it was originally developed to protect personal photos from being used for forging deepfakes, but it works for art to

Mist: free code for Windows; if you use MacOS or don’t have powerful enough GPU, you can run Mist on Google’s Colab Notebook

(art style masking tools change some pixels in digital images so that AI models can’t process them properly; the changes are almost invisible, so it doesn’t affect your audiences perception)

3. Use ‘AI poisoning’ tools

Nightshade: free code for Windows 10/11 and MacOS; you’ll need GPU/CPU and a bunch of machine learning libraries to use it though.

4. Stay safe and fuck all this corporate shit.

No one ever really talks about it in the fandom and it NEEDS to be discussed because it's hilarious to me. I have to ask where all the crazed spike x julia fans come from 😭 like say one thing negative about the ship or ship spike with someone else and there's this one person (who I think owns multiple spikexjulia accounts snd pretends to be different people😭😭) that starts sending their "CAnoN aNd facTuAL eviDencE" with so much hostility

I've also noticed that Julia fans either always hate Faye and/or don't give a damn about Spike's well-being and just want him paired up with Julia even if that costed him his life, which I don't even think Julia herself wanted for him to do in the end lol. It's a little disturbing

This user has been terrorising Bebop fandom across multiple platforms since 2022, I think. If you ever see this bitch harassing someone just flag the account or ban it. A collective appeal could do the trick, but it's gonna be like chopping off Hydra's heads. This pain in the ass keeps posting weird commissions on X (Twitter), Deviantart, Reddit, Pixiv (for Christ's sake, please DO NOT search Bebop tag on Pixiv, it's a total disaster in there right now) and edited Bebop wiki, describing Faye as Spike's no 1 enemy and Julia as a goddess of doves and roses 🤢 It's hard to track down every account, the only way to stay safe is to not interact with them and blacklist. "If I ignore it, maybe it will go away" tactics is the best in this situation, don't let them take away your time and emotions, they cannot be reasoned with.

Another thing that bothers me is that stupid localisation of guide books with SpikeJulia nonsence the translators added just because they wanted to and ruined the original idea that implies multiple ways of story perception. I've aready dispelled that "truest lover ever" myth by presenting the original texts from my collection of Japanese books. They fucked up with "love" kanji meaning in Eng and this changed a lot (I did some analysis here and here). Now we can see what happens when these love stories fall into the wrong hands: haters cite it like a Bible in each and every thread about SpikeFaye😩 Also there was a post about some Julia's love letter to Spike (wtf?) written on the back cover of the vol. 6.

I wanted to make a post about it and took pictures of a Japanese edition but forgot. Now it's the right time to dispel another myth.

According to quick translation results, this guide was made to inform fans about some Bebop episodes which weren't aired on regular TV and appeared later on WOWOW (premuim satellite broadcasting) because of censorship.

There was no mention of Julia writing letters to Spike in the original series. It was Spike who gave her a note describing rendezvous point or whatever and she tore it to pieces🤷🏼‍♀️

Just remember: Spike's well-being is up to the viewer. Noone can convince you otherwise if you don't want to and noone has right to insult you. Spike is for everyone 🌸

The situation is so annoying, those who loved SpikeJulia or didn't give a damn about them now hate this. If someone is going to use "SpikeJulia" as a safeword I will understand 🤣

@alexdrawsagain was kind enough to ask me about my original setting and my OCs, so…

The setting is a mixture of all the things I like, so it is basically “China meets Celtic mythology meets Wild, Wild West”.

There are two strongly intertwined worlds: the Heavens (Tiānjiè / 中界), home for the kami (deities or spirits of sorts), and the Middle world (Zhōngjiè / 天界), home for many different creatures – humans, yaogais (“monsters” of all kinds), fox spirits (huli jing / 狐狸精) and [until recently] alves. The two worlds used to be separate, but thirty years ago the situation changed dramatically and now Heavens are opened for anyone who wants to visit, trade or live there.

Almost all my current OCs live in Heavens’ capital, Tiānjīng (天京). I’ll start small and show you only the two of them:

Chì Juǎnlián (赤捲簾; Chi for short) – recently appointed Colonel of the Guards at Heavens’ Second Army. He is the first officer from the Middle world and one of the first half-bloods to get this high a position. Chi is short-tempered and generous, he falls in love easily (falls out of it just as easy) – aaaand he is always broke. Naturally. Oh, and Chi gets along with cats really well, as his grandmother was a werecat (that’s why I like to draw him with cats – here and here).

Tou Àihāo (透艾蒿; Tou for short) – legal advisor to the Second Army’s command. He is a kami, the eldest son in one of the most prominent kami families in the Heavens – and a huge disappointment to his parents, as he showed no interest in joining the Royal court or at least pursuing a career in more respected fields (‘cause army is generally frowned upon). Tou is highly educated, smart, composed and polite. He is capable of reading peoples’ minds, but doesn’t do it – and hates when it accidentally happens.

Chi and Tou are a dynamic duo (energetic idiot + rational smartass, obviously) – and I sure like drawing them as one. They go way back, but there will be a time and a place for their [tragic] back stories. Not now, not now ^^
