I have seen a lot of great posts dissecting the Goncharov theme and Scorsese’s artful choice of music throughout the film, but nobody has talked about the final scene in which Gábor Szabó’s 1968 masterpiece Half The Day Is Night is utilized so perfectly, almost in sync with Mario and Goncharov’s movements. Such a perfect choice, and it gave name and renown to Szabó’s album Dreams, released just 5 years prior to the production of Goncharov, the album’s record sales were said to have double post Goncharov, Scorsese once stated in an interview that he had found Gábor’s work in a hungarian jazz club, and even seen him perform live in Budapest prior to his sudden death in 1982. Who could have anticipated such a brief interaction between two masters of their craft would manifest so beautifully through cinema as seen in Goncharov.
