Tell me your stories...

At first I had trouble starting up, just out of a burn-out made it hard to focus or find anything I was enthusiastic about. So after weeks of researching the history of hacking since I didn’t knew what I wanted and needed to do I finally found something what made me happy. Even though it was somewhat ambitious.

I reflected on what are for me long term fascinations that’s how I came to the subject I ended up working with.

For the goal I had in mind the way seemed most proper to work in the way I worked. I use(d) fetish as a tool to make a start towards a judgement free zone. The judgement free zone is an important part of the way I live, and therefore an import part of my work. This zone is about more than just fetisism, it’s about people being themselves and respected for being themselves. Until they hurt themselves or someone else. Without being judged, fetish is a small part of that, it also contains; sexuality, religion, appearance and the way we treat one and other based on this. My work is usually about communication, which is also an important part of this project, the opening of a dialogue. The ‘freedom fighter’ aspect is not new to me as an individual, but not usually this big part of an already realized work.

The subject fetish seems somewhat cliche however my point of view is anything but.

My intention wasn’t to provoke or shock, I only wanted to inform. The goal was to give people an opportunity to look behind the curtain, to get a more informed picture about the subject, without the whole porn or emotionally scarring aspect. I wanted to show them the human and even the more fun side of a for shock value exploited subject. For this project I wanted a more silent, adult approach. I’ve considered many different forms, like an audiobook, a talk or an illustrated book (with pictures or illustrations). Like I already said, it was important to me to inform, not to shock. That’s why I decided to make this book, containing the words of real people and their experiences. The layout of the book called for the simplest and cleanest form; the more neutral presentation is, the less tainted the information will be perceived. I was considering using pictures, non-erotic, tasteful more schematic images, but it felt unnecessary. I didn’t want to scream for attention or shove a provoking image into anyone’s face. Since that’s what turns people off because of the initial shock and it also causes the judging in the first place. I feel the book doesn’t need it. Words are enough. The audience reaction at the exposition confirmed this.

To me the funny part is writing a book as a dyslexic person, this was difficult and also new for me. Usually I work with audio or technology, nevertheless for this project this didn’t seem fitting. That’s why after consideration I choose word instead of audio or visuals. By only using the written word the focus was on content, not form. I didn’t want to pre-chew the information because I wanted people to think for themselves, which words forces you to do. By not using images, the focus is on the story instead of creating more judgement. The reader doesn’t have to agree, I just want them to think about the subject before screaming and yelling their judgement without listening or understanding what the hell they are judging about.

Usually I work more efficient with a clear goal in mind, but in the end I found the integer goal I wanted to work towards and I feel I really did succeed in what I wanted. Especially after experimenting on how to exhibit this piece.

I am conscious of the fact that the exhibition was an experiment for me, I know people don’t really read at exhibitions and I made a book. Is this even the place for a book? Again I considered to use a different form, just for the exhibition, yet I thought I would rather try it as is instead of compromising my work my changing it for the presentation. My goal was to make people curious or to make people think, so I decided to use quotes from the book itself to make posters. These quotes were hanging above the initial work, the book, to create a simple and clean way of exhibiting the work. A simple pedestal on which to book laid and a white wall behind it on which the posters were hung. I really wasn’t sure on how it would be perceived, or if people even looked at it or read the posters.

To my surprise this way of exhibiting worked even more effective than I thought! Many people stopped, read the posters or even bits of the book. They started to think, partly even out loud and talk to one another about the subject. One of the quotes which was the most effective was: “I’m not sure I want a fist in my ass”. People stopped to ask themselves this question, they were considering this instead of making a face as if they were smelling poo. Even my lovely exhibition neighbour stoot in front of the posters contemplating. Later during the day I talked to her and she said, and I quote, “yes I was considering, however because of the from and layout. How you show it is very clean but it’s a dirty subject. I am very conservative and no I do not want a fist up my ass but I thought about it since this way of showing me it seems normal, it seems approachable, unlike it is because it’s dirty.” I told her it was my goal to make people think, instead of only judging the premise of their preconceived judgement, she told me it worked for her. She wasn’t the only one, everyone who walking by thought about it or talked about it. People smiled and discussed the subject instead of only being shocked. I got a conversation going from a positive point of view, even without my intervening the conversation started. Many people asked me if I could send them the book; they would love to read it. Which is a huge compliment. To me the exhibition was a gigantic success. Without compromising my project I achieved my goal.

The project isn’t done yet; writing a book isn’t simply done in 20 weeks, and I had a slow start since I didn’t know what to do at first.

To me this entire project was a new way of working. My research was also my project. This is usually not the case; normally these are two separate aspects.

I did two kinds of research. One part of it was research about the subject in general, like what are the correct definitions? How do psychologists and sexualogists view fetisism and paraphilia? How about history? The other part of my research was anthropologic critical emancipatory field research, which were the interviews that were later turned into a big part of the content of the book. The different research questions I had were a big part of the stories. But also I let them talk about what they want and let them be themselves without being judged.

My research questions on the topic are: How does western society view fetishes? How does the individual ‘fetisishist’ experience their fetish?

I tried reaching out to people further away but this wasn’t possible, people don’t trust you not with this sensitive information and don’t believe the promised anonymity. Therefore I looked at my direct environment. However because of the help from my interviewees, who supported my project, the ball did start rolling and I will interview more people who I am not acquainted to soon. Now the ball started rolling many people are willing to talk because they like my project and support my goal. Also people want to be heard in a respectful way instead of a sensational way. Since everything that is out from art, documentaries to medical research papers makes people look like freaks or weirdos instead of the normal people they are. It’s just abused for the shock value.

Besides the theoretical research there was also the question about form and presentation, like previously discussed. These questions were towards what form? Why a book? I found book most valuable, plus how do you educate yourself? I see a book as valuable at least. And the information shared is valuable as well and has to be experienced as such. In any other form it wouldn’t communicate as I wanted it to. I’ve tried the different previously discussed forms, however only one of them worked. I am not in the right headspace to do a talk, and I tried taping it as an audiobook but did not convey the tone I wanted it to have.

After my consideration and trial of different media, I focused on looking at different interview methods. However after this research I came back to my original method, the one I automatically use. By creating a casual setting and an open dialogue people felt more comfortable during these interviews even though they were talking about a very private matter.

My role as an artist in this matter was to create this platform, where people were given an opportunity to be heard, in a respectful manner. I leaded the interviews until all my curiosity was satisfied and all questions as much as possible were answered. I worked as a curator on the whole thing to combine the stories in such a way, it became cohesive and touched on all the points I’m trying to clarify towards the reader. Even though the opinions differ per interviewee, they are all valued and not changed because of the point I’m trying to make. I just want to inform the reader.

Every interviewee was different, so I had to change my approach and method. Now my remaining question is about visibility and marketing. How do I get it somewhere where people will be able to see it, or rather buy it? This question is not only a financial opportunity for a weird autonomous artist who doesn’t produce commercial or even sellable work, but I also see this project een important start of a dialogue which serves society in a positive way.

Making books is expensive, plus I want people to perceive the given information as valuable. This makes me want to put it in a book form, instead of a free downloadable pdf. However I also want the information to be widespread, because of that same value, but the material has to be respected. I’m not sure yet on how I will proceed with this project.

But what is the hacking part in this project? This was a question Susan frequently asked me during feedback. Because of her feedback and that of Reinaart, contributed to me figuring out how my project relates to hacking.I feel this project is closely related to culture jamming, cultural perspective and in some way forces. Since I’m trying to change something cultural and trying to change society’s point of view towards in this case fetishes. If something is perceived as a mental disorder is mostly determined by culture. Therefore I would need to make a change in culture to get to my goal of a world wide judgment free zone. There already was a shift in this subject due to 50 Shades of Grey, however is this even noticeable in society? More TV-shows or films include BDSM however there is much more than just BDSM. MUCH, much, more…

For me hacking is part of everything I do, mostly in attitude. On the subject of hacking, (this one is for you Reinaart!) my definition of hacking still remains the same. To me it’s about thinking, not judging only on the way others think, sharing information, experimenting, making others think, thinking for yourself, evolving, learning from and with one another and open-mindedness. It’s not just technological but it can be, it can be funny but it doesn’t have to be. Personally it’s about this attitude, I’m trying to use this or I will try it in another way. Why are things the way they are, and why are there pre associated thoughts connected to this thing? Just trying, thinking, observing and changing: yourself, an object or someone else. It can be small, it can be big, but most of all: play with it.

Way overdue!

I’m sorry I’m so late! I had to rush so much for the printer it completely slipped my mind. Besides it was somewhat confusing since my project is research, usually it’s not. So I’ll put my prologue, in which everything on questions etc is in there. See you Tuesday! (Loads of panic so I hope you’ll forgive me for my insane latenes)

Prologue

First of all, I am not a writer, nor will I ever be a real writer. I am an artist, this time using words for my project. This project; Tell me your stories… is a project about the stories of other people. I want to create a judgement free zone, by using fetish and words as my tools.

I think, observe and see much judgment towards the subject still. Even now after Fifty shades of gray made somewhat of an earthquake on the subject (well at least to BDSM). Society slowly accepts it a bit, just the tip, and I want to contribute towards that earthquake of understanding.

Even here now in Holland, where I live there still is judgment, even if this is one of the more ‘perverted’ countries with our prostitution. It seems like we’re going backwards in time with accepting others, people who like different things than the norm within their sexlife. Since so many things are still misunderstood. We think of ourselves as a country accepting others eventhough homo sexuality is still not accepted and two man holding hands is still frowned upon.

Which to me is silly and hurtful, I mean don’t hurt anyone or at least nonconsenting parties, what do we have to care? Or even to say?

While exploring this subject I found myself in a gray area. Let me try to make it more clear for everyone. This book is about fetishes and/or paraphilia not about sexual orientation. These three terms do crossover into each other, so let me define them to make it more clear.

Sexual orientation, means; to what are you attracted to sexually? Well in my case I’m heterosexual, which means as a woman I am attracted to men. I didn’t choose this, just like no one chooses their sexuality. Heterosexuallity is the norm, right now in western countries we’re slowly starting to accept homo sexuallity and bi sexuallity. Many other forms of sexuallity are still not accepted and in many cases misunderstood.

Homosexuality is for my generation (thank you!) or sort of normal however it has been perceived as a paraphilia for a long time. Even though in ancient times it was the most normal thing on earth (ancient greece and rome).

Paraphilia literally translated from latin means ‘besides’ (para) ‘love, loving, to love’ (philia) which referse to in a romanticly and sexual arousing maner. Within psychology this term is seen as a mental disease or mental disorder. In other words; paraphilia, is harmful and it’s sick.

The weird thing to me is, some fetishes are immediately categorized as a paraphilia. For example Autoerotic asphyxiation (definitions after the prologue) which is a kind of edge play. Edge play is always and in any case dangerous, but is not immediately categorized as a paraphilia. Also hematolagnia is very dangerous, a form of edge play but not categorized as a paraphilia. There is still so much discussion going on the the world of psychology towards this subject it’s hard to define. However for me it’s more simple I guess. Is it harmful? Are you because of it unable to do your thing? And so do you have to practise even though it’s harmful? Please seek help, do not hurt others, unless they like to.

Together with the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders a psychologist makes out when something is harmful or a disorder. But one of the rules for it to be a disease/disorder is society. For it to be a disorder it needs to be within the following criteria; distressful (causes harm or stress, the feeling of that something is wrong) dysfunctional (the ability to work and live are measurably impaired) and deviant. Deviant is the one I’m referring to, since this means different from the rest of your cultural context. So if society thinks yellow socks are weird you’re already deviant for wearing them. And if you’re attracted to the same sex, you’re in many countries deviant so you have already one of the criteria down. To me it’s alarming others dictated when you have or do not have a disorder.

That’s why the term homophile even exists (love of the same). The term heterophile does also exist, nevertheless it does not mean the same, the definition of this word saddens me since it means; wanting to be hetero and seeing that as the ultimate and good thing, instead of what you are…

Besides homosexuallity which is finially not a disease anymore, there are many other forms of sexual orientation perceived as a disease/disorder. In some cases I must say I don’t condone them myself, however I do feel like they are misunderstood, but it does not mean I support it in any way.

I found some of these sexual orientations to be seen as a fetish, which is not the case. A fetish is defined as a sexual attraction towards an object, piece of clothing or action. Which is not romantically. When we’re talking about sexual orientation we are talking about romantic feelings, which you cannot gain from anything/anyone else than the object of your attraction.

For Example I as a heterosexual woman, do not feel attraction towards women, or can be with a women in a romantical way. This does not mean I can’t have sex with a woman, it means I can’t be in a romantic relationship with a woman. So there, this is the same for any other orientation.

A homosexual is attracted towards the same sex, a bisexual to both sexes however is not sexually attracted to a tree. A dendrophile is attracted to a tree and does not (usually) feel any romantic feelings towards a human. But because dendrophilia is misunderstood and not seen as a orientation, even the word ‘philia’ is attached to it. As far as I know a tree does not mind and the person is not hurting anyone so what’s the difference?

There are more of these philias which are not recognized or understood. I’m talking about mechanophilia (vehicles), pedophilia (children), objectophilia (objects) and zoophilia (animals).

With all the documentaries which are mocking their subjects I’ve seen, the people talking there, do not feel any attraction towards something else and do and can not have a relationship with the ‘norm’.

The wife of the Eiffel Tower talked on several talk shows to make people see she’s talking about an orientation and not about a fetish. I do not believe she choose to be attracted to objects either, just like I don’t believe a pedophile or a zoophile choose to be attracted only towards the inappropriate. I sincerily do not support or condone peodophiles or zoophiles, since to me it’s not consented and very harmful towards the object.

To be more clear, as a child I was sexually harassed several times, even abused (even though the age difference wasn’t that big I wasn’t an adult and the other one was so by law this is pedophilia). So truly I do not condone of this behaviour since a child can’t consent, not really. We have this law of 18+ then you’re an adult, so you do fully understand and can fully consent even though maturity is for everyone on a different age, for some even later on. That’s why this thing is so difficult. I do think a pedophile or a zoophile (even though the phile part feel wrong since it is a orientation) should seek mental help. But I also think this condition should be more understood. The same counts for zoophilia, sadly in some countries it’s still legal to sexualy abuse an animal. An animal can’t consent either, since it’s not fully aware to what’s happening. Also animals don’t have sex, they mate in order to populate, not for pleasure, al though dolphins does have sex for pleasure so I wouldn’t know where I stand on that subject, maybe a dolphin can consent, if so in that case go at it if you and the dolphin want… To me the weirdest gap in all of this that a person can marry a animal but if two men want to marry it can’t be called marriage. And everything is seen as a disorder.

Anyway let’s not wave to0 far from the subject; this gray area is in the middle I did think it should be a part of this project but it’s an other discussion. Therefore it’s here in the prologue. In the stories I collect I don’t want to include this discussion also from a legal standpoint. Also I don’t want this book to be about abuse, I want this book to be about fetishes, to what people don’t understand, to let them read stories. To make a judgement free zone. Besides fetishes are around much longer than you think! And I’m not talking about orientation since that’s been around for as long as humans are around.

For example autoerotic asphyxiation, was seen as a cure for erectile disfunction back in the 1600s (definition can be found after the prologue), since when men were hanged people observed an erection or even edjaculation during. Therefore it had to be a cure!

Also foot fetishism dates back to the 13th century, when people started to fear STD’s and since a foot couldn’t give you syphilis, why not?

Even SM (sadism and masochism) is one of the oldest, dating back around 470 B.C. the temple of the floggings contains one of the oldest pictures known to men. The picture includes a woman getting penetrated from both ends by two men flogging her with a cat o'nine tails (a multi tailed whip). Therefore why is it nowadays so weird?

Even necrophilia (love of corpses) dates back to ancient times, however this is one of the gray area’s I’ve talked about, since in some cases a necrophile wants to have sex with the corpse of a beloved. To me this case is not a fetish. Others don’t feel attraction towards living humans, which to me is orientation, then you have others who just want to sometimes or more often but do feel attraction to living human beings in this case I would call it a fetish. Anyway in ancient Egypt the dead were mummified for different reasons one of them however was necrophilia, so you see fetishes have been our nature for centuries, probably since we are. Nonetheless that’s me speculating.

Feel free to disagree however this is my opinion, thus far even my own psychiatrist agrees. From a legal point of view I collected stories from consenting parties only. Since I want this book to only be about fetishes and not abuse. I want people to read these stories, to understand. If people understood better, there wouldn’t be such a stigma. I’m not encouraging for everyone to have massive orgies while choking themselves or go pooping on eachother. I only want to educate, people who do not understand, to open minds.

These stories are interviews I did from a critical-emancipatory view. Since I want a certain ‘group’ to be understood. It’s not about quantity but quality. I talked with people face to face or by phone in which every interview was different. It was interesting to me to talk in such a clinical way to people about this subject, since it’s so personal. I collect their opinions which differ, also the environment differs for each of them. Mostly people don’t want to give me their personal information until I give them mine in all honesty. The funny thing is I tried to reach out far to people which didn’t work at all but the people surrounding me gave me a snowball effect. To even international contacts, which surprises me greatly. To me, the interviews were also hard, since I’m not a professional.

So in my unprofessional jet charming way I got very interesting stories, usually I ask them first, so what is your kink? And they start talking, remembering and joking. From then on every interview was different. Different questions different attitudes, because it’s so personal I needed to take a personal approach as well. I also gave them control over the interview, they could say or talk about what they want to and things they did not want to enclose they don’t have to. After an interview I made documents exactly true to their words, which they could change if they wanted to. Also they had to approve the text before I would print it, otherwise I wouldn’t print it. I differ greatly from the interviews and documentaries out there I think. Since I’m not after sensation but personal and honest, not mocking or judging.

While interviewing there is no judgement even though I sometimes react personally. For example I have a interview lined up about the curiosity towards rape fetish, I’m sorry it’s not in this print jet, since the person to interview does not have enough time to finish it. But I reacted, shocked and confused even since my experience. In these cases of reacting which is completely logical, I needed to readjust my attitude. Since they were trying to tell me honestly about this and I wanted to hear them properly, jet I reacted not in a positive manner, what is to be expected in some cases.

It’s okay to react however open your mind right after that. Show the curiousity I have, show it’s okay and you didn’t mean to judge. I mean we’re only human right? That was for me the first time I really reacted, however there will probably be more times, since this is the first draft. This project continues. I mean it’s a bit ambitious try to write a book in about 20 weeks. So I hope to be able to print the full version next year around this time.

This project I started for my minor hacking. To me this is hacking in the sense of trying to normalize what is seen as abnormal. Which to me is important, for us as a society we need to evolve from so many different things we see as weird or abnormal. People judge too much and too fast. This is my tool to do so on this subject. This relates to culture jamming; I criticise what is out there now, how it’s done and how this is treated. Cultural perspective; I’m trying to change and disrupt a part of the culture since there is no place for this now, by making this book. And forces; I’m trying to change society by using this media a book. I’m trying to change and disrupt what is seen as abnormal; I think there should be a place within society for everyone, specifically for everyone who does no harm. Even though I came across so many ethical difficulties. Another example is Vorarephilia, which is the sexual interest in devouring another human being or being devoured. The to me beautiful thing of fetishes is there is always a yin to the yang. However Vorarephilia is of course considered as a paraphilia (sickness), the misunderstood thing is: it is not about pain. There are ofcourse many varieties however there is a case that this happened. Armin Meiwes back in 2001 had eaten Bernd Brandes with consent. Meiwes advertised looking for someone willing to be eaten and Brandes replied wanting to be eaten. This was quite the stir up. However unusual is this wrong? Since Brandes consented really wanted to be eaten, like some others in this world. When is someone capable of consenting? Where are the boundaries when consented? This to me is a difficult thing. I mean everyone should be able to make their own decisions. Everyone is when in consent should be able to do what they want to. There are still communities in the world which are cannibalistic so when it’s done in a western country is it that much of a difference? It’s a hard subject to just easily put a yes or no answer to, I’m not sure myself. Although some people commit suicide, why not please someone in the process? I really don’t know where I stand on this. I’m not condoning murdering people but this is with a very different context. Meiwes was not out to murder he really wanted to eat someone and looked for someone willing to be eaten. I don’t know if Brandes was bought off or something but if he just really wanted to be eaten? Is there harm done?

Within many cultures or religions these things or fetishes are allowed or encouraged, in other cultures or religions everything is frowned upon. To me the importance is when all parties consent is there harm done? Why judge? Even though the ethical part on some cases to me are gray and confusing too.

I really only want people to understand more. Not judge as much or as fast. Open your mind, you don’t have to agree, but look beyond your own bubble. What is normal or abnormal anyways?

This project is dear to me in the terms of this is my passion. Other people's passions, obsessions, fascinations or somewhat mine. Until it’s harmful or nonconsenting what is the problem? Let people do their thing. Besides who wouldn’t like some extra pleasure while pooping?

So I hope this prologue gave you a more clear vision on what I’m trying to tell you. Furthermore I hope you find the stories as pleasurable as I did.

While working....

Sorry for the post being late. I didn’t knew what to write about latly so it took me an appointment with the theory teacher before I knew how to continue on and what I’m still ‘missing’ or rather what is not defined clear enough jet.

She suggested to look more into anthropology and those research methods. There I with her my research is “Critical-emancipatory” which means it’s about the quality of the research and it’s for a group of people to change their ‘circumstance’ it might be the bad word but it’s to make it better for a certain group of people.

I also have to look into my role as researcher;

what am I? I think I’m a ‘platform’ for this certain group to talk through, I’m the one collecting, connecting and most of all the listener.

What’s my goal? To normalize fetishes, or rather to educate people.

More clearly I need to formulate what is hacking about this? I got as far as the attitude I have towards this.

I found out that what I’m doing is exactly the right thing. Yay!

1. Problem: Judgement towards fetishes

2. Diagnose: Interviews, and seeing the environment how people aren’t even easy to find or talk with about this subject. Hard to find places where it’s normal and people are open to it.

3. Intervention: The book, or maybe rather the first draft of book which I make during this minor, I will continue afterwards.

4. Evaluation: I can see it after I have the book, I want to do talks with it and see how people react after reading it. Which will be taken into the final product.

5. For me the last step; Final: after all these steps I will have more material also have (hopefully) more interviews and this will be the final/end product.

The sad thing was after that meeting I had an other one with an other teacher. She however wasn’t supporting at all, or even listening. To me it was sad, since both teacher rode the same train and she formed a personal opinion in the train about my project and when she met me she only wanted to tell me her personal opinion. She had a bad personal experience (well that’s how I’m calling it) therefore she thought what I was doing dumb, dull and stupid. She thought the project could only be ‘saved’ if it would contain pictures and provoke people. (in which I strongly disagree) Yes the topic fetishes isn’t fresh or new anymore however my approach is. To me it’s not about provoking or sensationalize, it needs to stay pure, I’m not doing this like everyone, usually the documentaries are made to sensationalize fetishes and make people look like they are weird, which goes completely against my approach, I want just people to tell their stories, safe, no judgement. And in order to do so I need to not use images, if you read you’ll get your own images in your head which to me is stronger since it’s not provoking and making you look at it from an different angle. The only usable feedback I got was think about form, in which she is right. But if she had listened she would have heard I already had my ideas.

Honestly that shot me down quiet badly, I’m just out a burnout and to hear someone clouded with her personal judgement really hit me. However she is my ‘target audience’. Narrow-minded, clouded in judgement people.

This slowed me down this past week, however I did get an interview! Which is motivating! I discovered I’d like to interview people much better on the phone or face to face than to ask them to write. Still it’s hard to find people willing to talk since everybody judges, like that teacher. It kind of motivates me more (well now at least a couple of days ago it didn’t) since everybody has some sort of kink and I want people to stop judging so much! Besides there are many things which are considered a fetish jet many people do it, do not really talk about it and judge others because of their fetishes! (Most populair one is voyeurism, which is looking at other people having sex..... Porn, porn is a fetish jet practically everybody watches porn.... jet judge over other people who like to be spanked..... They aren’t hurting anyone, it’s consented, so nothing is wrong with it.

One great video I came across is from a sexologist who really explains it well, knows what she’s talking about and actually agrees with my standpoint. Minus a few points whether it’s about sexual orientation or paraphilia. (However I think that’s still up to debate in the sexology community itself)

I try to not border sexual orientation since that’s an other discussion and focus on paraphilia itself. That’s what I want.

I got some tips from fellow students to go to specific party’s and I thought going to dungeons would also be a good idea, since like my theory teacher said I’m an outsider which makes it more difficult to connect. People want to talk but they are afraid, which I can imagine!

Relation to hacking...

So I thought to find the relation between my project and hacking would be maybe easier to find with the bullet points. Since my attitude is actually usually hacking and it’s in there I know so but defining it is sometimes difficult. So looking at the bullet points I find Cultural perspectieve and Forces to relate to my project. Surprise! Not the points I choose at the start. However I’m trying to change something in society, not really force but in an educational maner. People can choose to read, learn. Besides when you don’t know what you’re talking about (that’s my attitude) maybe you shouldn’t have such a big opinion on it, maybe shut up and listen to someone who does. I want to create a platform for people to be heard in a non-judgemental environment. Maybe even more creating that non-judgemental environment. That’s how far I’ve come now, and I rather talk to my teacher further to more and more clearly define since this is probably not completely there and talking to her really helps me figure out where I stand.

Plan

Now I have a few interviews lined up, however I want to dig deeper maybe I can’t do that right now before the end of this minor however I’ll try as much as I can. I want to visit dungeons, contact events if they are open to talk to me, just like store (owners), sexworkers, maybe if possible sexologists, parties and dive more into this world where people are accepted and it’s a normal thing.

But for now, I will do these interviews, if there’s time I’ll visit one or more of the above, write my ‘prologue’, research the fetishes already talked about. And make.

The plan for the form of this project still is, and will be a book. I want it clean and pure like the information inside. It will be a nice paperback book A5 or A4 (depending if it’s possible) with a little off white paper (nicer for the eyes), the pages inside will be 100grams and the cover will be 170grams, simple clean black and white, with rounded corners. Now I have 1 interview once I have a little more I want to play around with fonts and the layout, that’s what I want to be the way I want to shape. No folding things just nicely pure simple. To me it’s about the inside, it’s about the information not about design. The more I’m pushed towards it, the more I felt that’s what it’s not about, the wheel is already invented and this is to me the way to do it. If someone doesn’t understand that it’s too bad for them, they just don’t get my project.

Finally!

So finally I found my ‘flow’!

After al good suggestions I missed my drive in the projects. Usually I’m enthusiastic about what I’m doing and am happy, very interested and invested in what I’m doing/researching.

So I went back to myself thinking what makes me happy now? What is my interests/fascination now? What makes me happy? I always had and have 2 major fascinations 1 religions/groups of people believing in something 2 other peoples passions/fascinations/obsessions and fetisj’s (among others).

Since both subjects are way too big for now and I will work on religions later this year I wanted to focus on the second subject which is dived into more little subjects (still very big ones). I’ve always wanted to work on this however the subjects are too big still so I choose the ‘littlest’ one; fetisj.

This still is a big subject but more approachable sort of, than the others, it’s more direct and clear.

The thing about fetisj’s fascinates me is I don’t understand but I want to understand. It doesn’t mean I want to practise (nope) but I want know, learn and understand. So I’d need to ask people.

My point of view on fetisj is that there is so much judgement! Which is silly, I think because people don’t understand they judge. I mean it’s not like you have to poop on someone, however it is interesting why people find it pleasurable. I wish to learn about this, and many more fetisj’s! I want to know why? How does it work? etc.

What I’m asking is very personal though, and I’m not out to shock or provoke anyone just to learn, understand and normalise this subject. Plus this information I’m asking is valuable and very personal, it’s knowledge which not anyone can simply give you.

So my plan now is I made an e-mail adres in which you want to receive the information. I’m asking the information on various platforms.

I have a few rules; no judgement, the fetisj discussed is only between 2 or more consenting adults or 1 or more consenting adult and 1 or more consenting object (no animals, nor children/adolescents or non consenting people/living things of any kind), complete anonymity I ask the people to give me an alias they would like to use, I don’t want names, ages or places where they live, I want their identities to be concealed (unless they wouldn’t want that) because of all the judgement I want them to be safe from judgement and consequences it might have on their personal lives (since people do not understand, judge and maybe people might even loose their jobs how stupid this reason is to fire someone, it’s not my place to reveal them anyways). No images, I’m not here to provoke I’m here to share information. The text I receive will asap pasted into a word document without an e-mail adres and delete it when pasted.

So in short; I want to learn and listen to everyone who wants to tell me about their fetisj, collect this information and publish it in a book, I collect check if it’s a copyrighted story etc. I will write my vision about it and write an explanation about the fetisj’s written about by others. I will not change or censor their stories I only wish to share them (maybe only make them more readable since like me some people aren’t great in writing) in the most appropriate way I can think off. Since to me it’s most important how I treat this information so the information can be treated as how it’s supposed to be treated; valuable.

The questions I need to ask to find my research answers:

Where can I find information on fetisj’s?

What fetisj’s are there?

Where can I ask information on fetisj’s to people who practise the fetisj’s I want to learn about?

Which questions do I need to ask to get the information I want about this subject?

Obviously I will get back on all of this but I’m so happy i can post about the project I want to do now instead of only researching about hacking and the history of hacking.

Updates and internal struggle

So unfortunately I’m still ill at home :( next to that I’m struggling at this moment with ‘my project’. Simply because I don’t know right now, I don’t know what I want to do. I’m researching into the history of hacking for some inspiration and because it’s vital to know the background. Or at least I think so.

On one hand I want to continue with my work from last year. About transmitting of languages and languages. It wasn’t clear to what would be the outcome; or a new way, a device of transmitting or create my own new language or something.

To what I’m doing now it was suggested to get some more technical skills for example raspberry pi or (my own suggestion) Python.(Since I’m quick in figuring out softwares and get bored with it very quickly, this is way more advanced) And maybe form a class or course about it. (Which connects to what I want to do after graduation a teachers course)

And it was suggested to me to work with my now ‘disability’ to work with my burn-out. And I would need to define this in my own way but to figure out who I am now and how I work now since I’m not the person I was before.

All these options are good and viable but I don’t know. I’m struggling with my burn-out to get to make decisions which creates little panics since I don’t know what the hell I’m doing. I’m sincerely struggling and a bit stuck. I’m working on some soundtracks and little works to break free from this, however because of my burn-out I’m not breaking free it creates more panic.

Which I know is completely unnecessary. However the struggle is real. I’m still stuck and trying to work on some ideas now but it’s not really getting along.

On my research about hacking I still remain by my earlier statement. To me hacking is about an attitude, it’s curiosity and the own need to figure things out, experiment and the want to learn more. It’s about fucking around with things (it doesn’t need to be digital or even material) it’s playful and fun. It’s about discovering new things and sharing it. It’s a community where people share information and knowledge and in which people want to help each other and learn from one and other. You do not have to agree, it can be political but it doesn’t have to be, it can be anything. It’s friendly and welcoming since everyone can teach you something new you wouldn’t know, there are no stupid questions since questioning things is important. The only thing that is important is what you think. It might be a bit an utopian view but this is how I see hacking.

I think the documentaries I’ve seen by now and all the info I gathered only confirm my statement. In ways it confirms why I choose this minor. I fit here, which makes my panic of course worse.

Since I live onder my own rock and do not follow any form of new but Wierd (https://www.wired.com/ even though I don’t follow everything on there). (I feel new is very much censored why should I listen to incomplete and tempered with information?) If the news is truly important it will find it’s way to me, I don’t need to look for it. It’s not that I don’t care about what’s happening everywhere, but to me it doesn’t feel right to listen to shit people yell which is untrue/ half-true or tempered with, I rather use my energy in something meaningful and truthful.

Therefore many things where new to me, obviously I knew that Anonymous exists, and that Wikileaks exists but not much more. I did know something about scientology since religions fascinate me endlessly, I’m not a religious person but it fascinates me these things exist. Just like my love of conspiracy theories, I does not mean I agree or disagree but I love how and why people believe in certain things. I’m going to work on a project just about that soon with a friend, so it’s not now for me at least and I can’t get in on that throughout my blog, since it’s not just me but also his work which I’m not sure he want to open the lid of right now so I respect that. (It also confirms my fascination in other peoples fascinations/believes/fetishes/obsessions I simply love this, the uniqueness and the diversity of people)

I need to find my way this (school, projects, opinions, everything) is the simple conclusion.

To continue on the last post I chose the promo of OHM2013 the latest addition of the hackercamps. I want to dig in some of the participants, lookup the other camps CCC Camp and the EMF Camp and the history of this event (as far as I can find). And everything connected to it as well as continue on the research from last week.

We also had some nice tips on how to research and formulate a question to research with. But because I’m still floating in ‘I don’t know what I want to do’ with little panics about that even though that’s unnecessary to panic because of my burn-out It’s not really helping my process. However I’m doing something which I do feel is important, knowing or learning about the background and history it will probably help me define my definition on hacking and will stir me in the direction I need/want to go. I still feel like I’m not at the question part jet, since I’m floating. For now I’d wish to find as much information as possible about the history of hacking, it’s not narrow jet or at a point of formulating a question well at least not critical jet. If you wish for a question it would be right now ‘What is the history of the hacking community?’ which is not narrow or critical at all.... Hopefully after this once again very long post I will find a question I’d wish to research.

So about SHA2017 I want to be involved however I don’t know what or how jet, I will send a mail and find out what suits me the best and the event the best :) I’m really interested and it seems like fun and I think I can learn a lot from it. Also since I’m not heading to graduation this year I’ll have more time to be involved and I think I will learn a lot :)

On the 27th of September Claudia Borges gave us a nice lecture about SHA2017. SHA2017 is an event this summer (once every 4 years) hackercamps. The lecture was perfectly timed for me since I’m researching the history and background of hacking this moment. Which was great, I gained some more names and things/aspects to research. I wasn’t at the point jet to research the other bullet points I wanted to research however I think in some way this would be a nice start to kick things off. I watched this documentary and made notes which I research in this post. So words, phrases and background which are found in this documentary I will share underneath. I must say I was truly fascinated. However I’m always fascinated about groups of people who believe in something (no matter what) and what they do/act/stand for. Wether I agree or not, doesn’t matter the thing that binds a certain group together to me is fascinating in some ways. (Especially religions however I will circle to that back later this year)

Obviously Anonymous is different from other groups, since they move as one. Which maybe is even more interesting. The fact that you can join or leave unconditionally, it’s closed jet not closed. Also I found their actions and interventions truly impressive.

Now I took the people who actually clicked/read/watched everything though the process of how I do research, I still need to think and formulate on all of this and I even have more links I also still need to go though. However this was one big amount of information. Thus far sometimes it may seem a bit propaganda like which I tried to avoid or at least post videos on both sides. On some I could not find any (yet?) or I just couldn’t and wouldn’t (for example Hal Turner, I can’t and will not). There are many sides to stories I try to pick none for research, just tried to gather as much information as I possibly can not having a opinion (in the gathered information) since this is for this study, or offending anyone, I surly hope I didn’t since it was not my intend.

However I learned a I think well rounded definition on the word ‘hacktivism’. (Since obviously that’s what Anonymous is all about)

To hack into a computer system in effort to make a social or political change. (the individual who does it is called a hacktivist)

With roots in hacker culture and hacker ethics, its ends are often related to the free speech, human rights, or freedom of information movements.’ -google result no1

Thus far is my conclusion that hacking is a community. In which data/information is shared. The curiosity on finding information and sharing it within this community or maybe even the world.

I’m happy to learn more about anonymous, since I see them in fighting for a cause they believe in. A cause which I think is very much related to the hackers community; transparency, sharing and gaining information, non-censored and freedom.

However their stands are far more political as I dare to stand now, since I’m not following any form of news whatsoever (big news finds a way to me or not, I believe the most forms of news broadcasted are censored). Therefore I’m not informed enough (I’d probably agree but still).

I’d still like to dig further in the history of hacking and the hacking community since this is still very ‘now’. I’d like to learn more.

My own project is still searching so next week I will probably do some soundtracks as Reinaart suggested or dig some more into the subject of communication, however I feel still somewhat lost, we’ll see what happens next ;) In any case I will not be bored :)
