Week #12 (Blog 2)
Hey everyone! I am so excited that this day has finally come, the day that I finish writing my last blog. Although this experience has opened my eyes to the world of cosmetic surgery and I have gained a lot of knowledge from doing these blogs, it has been a long, hard, and bumpy road. It hasn’t been the easiest and sometimes I feel like my blogs are useless but I would first like to start off this blog with saying thank you to the people who read my blogs. I don’t know how many people read it, or if anyone at all besides Olivia reads it but any readers are appreciated. Throughout these last three months I hope that I have affected at least someone and showed them that cosmetic surgery can be a good thing. But there is that key word I just said, “can” this means that I don’t always think that cosmetic surgery is a good thing. For example, in my blog before this one I talked about how I think cosmetic surgery on your feet is not very smart. I think that some cosmetic procedures are ok to have done for whatever the circumstance is, but there are other procedures I think are dumb to get and depend upon what the circumstance is for getting a certain procedure. So for this blog I wanted to talk about what my real opinion is on different types of surgery. I’ll first give the name of the surgery and a short description of how the procedure is done, what are the risks, and then I’ll give my opinion on what I think a certain procedure. So yeah let’s get started. The first procedure is any type of breast surgery; breast augmentation (enlargement of the breasts), breast lift (lifting the breasts), and breast reduction (reducing breast size). I think that any type of breast surgery is good. With having my own personal experience with have a breast augmentation, especially at a young age, I can testify that this surgery was not really a risk to my health and has improved my self confidence. I also think that there is nothing wrong with a person wanted to change the way their breasts look if that means lifting, reducing, or making bigger. Breasts are something that helps define a woman and they are always present, so why not change them? The next procedure is liposuction. Liposuction uses thin tubes to suck out the fat in the desired areas of the patient, making the patient look slimmer. I think this procedure is fine because there is only a certain amount of fat that the surgeon will remove to make sure that the patient’s surgery is safe. Sometimes liposuction surgery can even boost a patient’s motivation for working out because the results from liposuction are immediate. The next procedure is called Vulvovaginal surgery. I have never talked about this procedure because this is one of the procedures that I do not think are worth getting at all. This type of surgery involves surgery done on female genitalia fixing whatever the patient wants to fix. I think this procedure is dumb because in my opinion women aren’t flaunting their lady parts to people, or at least they shouldn’t, also even if people said that they want vagina surgery to please themselves that makes no sense to me, you can’t even see your vagina unless you have a mirror. Anyways moving onto the next procedure which is a tummy tuck. This is the last procedure I am going to talk about. A tummy tuck is when excess skin is removed and the abdominal wall muscles are tightened. I love the idea of getting a tummy tuck! It gives people, especially moms, their body back! Sometimes after having a baby or losing a lot of weight a person can be left with a lot of left over skin. No matter how hard a person works out sometimes there is skin that can never be tight again. This is why I love tummy tucks because this surgery is really useful and make a person look and feel so much better about themselves. So yeah overall I would have to say that I think most procedures are good to get but there are a few that I think are super useless. But yeah thanks for reading my blogs Olivia! You really are a trooper for reading everyone’s blogs I am sure it can get tiring but I really appreciate you for grading mine. –lex

Week #12 (blog 1)
Hello again! Sorry everyone you are probably getting really sick of reading about the same topic over and over again, trust me I am like kind of getting sick of writing them, but you know since I like to have good grades I guess I will continue on. But! I am really excited this week because this is the last week of blogs, and I never thought I would live to see the day that I submit my final blog! I mean let’s be real for a minute, writing a 750-word blog twice a week for three months is tiring and it is a lot of writing. Anyways, so it is week 12 and I wanted to start off the week talking about something sort of strange; I want to talk about the types of cosmetic surgery that people have gotten for their feet. Weird right?! Why in the heck would someone want to get selective surgery on their feet? Feet are feet and we all have them, they aren’t pretty they aren’t something we really show off, they are on our bodies just so that we can actually walk instead of stumble on nubbins. Anyways, so let’s talk about the types of surgeries people have decided to put themselves through. The first procedure is referred to as the Cinderella foot surgery. Apparently Cinderella is known for her beautiful feet that would fit into not at all practical glass shoes and women want to achieve that. This surgery usually consists toe shortening, so that women can fit better into designer high heels. Toe shortening is the most common surgery done on the foot. A portion of the bone in the toe has to be removed at the contracted joint so the toe can be realigned as a shorter toe. In my opinion this sounds completely horrible! The surgery, in my eyes, is really invasive for something so small and that doesn’t have a major difference in the end result. Also if there were complications of this surgery it could leave the patient with impaired walking. Anyways, moving on… because the demand for having foot surgery is rising there are different types of foot surgeries that are being performed more often and one of the newest procedures is to fix “toebesity”. Just as we can have liposuction done on our hips, thighs, abdomen, and love handles; this can also be done on our toes. This procedure slims down “fat” toes and feet so, yet again, people’s toes can fit better into slimmer type shoes and supposedly look better. Getting liposuction done on your toes and feet is a lot more difficult and dangerous to do because everything such as skin, nerves, muscle, bone, and fat are more tightly packed in than on your abdomen. So again this proves my point that this surgery is kind of dumb because of how high the risks are for your nerves and muscles. Alright, the last procedure I want to talk about is how people are getting fillers injected into their heels. This is so that their pain tolerance is higher when it comes to wearing uncomfortable shoes. So yeah those are just a some of the more popular procedures that can be done on your feet. This is weird for me to write this type of blog because usually I talk about how cosmetic surgery can be good for you and your self-esteem. But I honestly think cosmetic surgery on a foot is seriously so stupid. Like a foot is a flipping foot, it’s not your face that it is present all the time to others, it is stuffed inside a shoe and if it’s in a sandal you are most likely not waving your foot around in other peoples face. Anyways sorry for the strong opinion but I guess it is my own blog and I can say what I want… lol –lex

Week #11 (Blog 2)
Hello everyone! Holy cow yesterday was so sunny and nice and I finally got to lay out in the sun and get some color on this pasty white body of mine. It was super nice this week just to relax and enjoy not having really any homework at all except for doing my blogs. But oh my goodness I am so excited that I am almost done writing these blogs, like seriously this has been going on for about three months and I feel like my blogs sometimes get boring. But, I really hope others are reading my blogs are using them for helpful guidance throughout their decision of getting cosmetic surgery. Hopefully these blogs aren’t just going to waste and are just being used for getting a good grade in English because I work my tail off on all of these blogs by trying to be interesting and find useful information. Like I love to share my experience that I have had with having a cosmetic procedure and make people feel more comfortable about their decision to have something altered on their body. It is always good to hear from multiple people about how their surgery was life changing for the better and has increased their quality of life. So what I wanted to talk about for the second blog of week 11 was what a person should know or I guess question before they go in for surgery. I think it is always important to prepare yourself for surgery because it is a serious thing, not just something you should throw around like some silly little thing. Anyways the first thing you should consider is if you are healthy enough to have cosmetic surgery done. If you are not sure the doctors will always determine whether or not you are a good candidate for surgery. Some health conditions may cause you from getting cosmetic surgery but it is better off not having the surgery rather than ending up with more serious medical issues. The second thing you should know is what the name of your desired procedure is and what happens in this procedure. If you don’t know the name of your procedure it might show that you don’t really know what you are getting into. It would also be beneficial to know what the basics of the surgery will be, such as you will be put under anesthesia and we will make small incisions here and here, etc. that kind of information will really help you figure out what type of surgery you are going in for. Knowing this information will also show you what the end results should be. Another thing you should know before going in for surgery is what types of risks and complications could happen during surgery. You need to know that surgery has risks so that you can be prepared for if any risks happen. Also there will always be the risk of scarring which can vary from little scarring to major scarring. The next thing you should think about is what you are hoping to gain from getting a cosmetic procedure done. Like do you want to get a procedure done to boost self confidence, please someone else, or are just being bugged by a certain area on your body? It is important to figure out what you want because surgery does have its “limitations” on what the end results will be and you don’t want to come out of surgery being disappointed. You also want to know what the exact expected results are from having a certain type of procedure. And you need to know that cosmetic surgery will not fix all your problems, it especially will not cure all of your mental health issues such as depression or eating disorders. The next major thing you should consider is are there any alternatives rather than having a cosmetic procedure done. Such as improving diet, exercising, or trying other non-invasive surgeries done. So like I said before there will be scarring and that is what you need to know is where will your scars be and can you hide them? Any invasive surgery you have will have a scar from the incision, you want to make sure that your scars wont be big and ugly on somewhere really visible. Overall, you should always know what surgery you are getting yourself into, and make sure that your plastic surgeon is a board certified surgeon. –lex

Week #11 (Blog 1)
Hello peeps! Sorry if my blog makes no sense because, let me be honest, I’m on vacation for high school spring break and I really do not want to be writing this blog because it’s sunny outside and I would rather be tanning. Anyways, since I want a good grade in English I guess I will subside from sitting in the sun and just except my pasty white skin and write this blog. So it’s week 11 and for the first blog of the week I wanted to talk about what are some of the riskiest cosmetic procedures that can be done. I think it can be helpful to know what type of procedures have a higher risk factor than others. Anytime you go in for surgery there is always possible risks to take into factor, such as the risk of infection or the risk of how your body will react while being under anesthesia. So the first procedure that is on the list of risky procedures is a breast augmentation. With me having a breast augmentation I knew that the surgery could have complications but if you do everything you the doctors tell you to do all is usually well. In a breast augmentation surgery, the risks can be… “pain in the breast, infection, changes in nipple sensation, scar tissue that distorts the shape of the implant, and leakage or rupture.” Luckily none of these have happened to me so far and I have really stuck to the rules that the surgeon has given me. The next procedure is silicone lip injections; this could also be called a lip augmentation. There are common side effects of getting lip injections such as bleeding, swelling, and bruises. But there are some more serious complications including, “lip asymmetry, lumps in the lips, infection, scarring, stiffening of the lip, and severe or prolonged swelling or bruising.” Especially when injecting silicone, it could lead to hard scar tissue that could potentially be painful or disfigure the shape of the lips. The next procedure is butt implants and injections, which is also referred to as a gluteal augmentation. This procedure can have higher complications because sometimes the injections involve liposuction of other areas of the body. The risks involve “bleeding, infection, implant rupture, implant migration, pressure on your scatic nerve, exposing the implant, scarring, nerve damage, and seroma.” There has also been several rare cases of butt implants and injections that have led to a person’s death. The next risky procedure is liposuction. Because liposuction involves removing fat by suction and can be done all over your body there are a few risks. The risks involve, “perforation in the stomach walls, blood clots, systemic infections, and fat clogs in the lungs”. Many of these complications can easily lead to death. The next procedure is double jaw surgery, which to me sounds honestly absolutely horrible. So let me explain, it is a surgery to “correct potentially serious complications from conditions like sleep apnea, TMJ, and congenital diseases that affect the face.” But people also use this surgery to get a desirable jawline. There a many risks that can happen with this surgery, “bleeding, decreased blood supply to the jaw segments, infection, damage to the teeth, and jaw joint problems.” The next procedure is called a abdominoplasty, which is commonly known as a tummy tuck. This procedure is pretty invasive and involves opening up the abdominal wall and even cutting off excess skin. The risks are having fluid pool underneath the skin, a big scar that wouldn’t heal, numbness, scarring, infection, and possible death of fatty tissues underneath the skin. This surgery is constantly ranked as one of the most dangerous cosmetic procedures that are performed. The last procedure I want to talk about is called a body lift, this is when the thighs, belly, butt, and genitals are lifted. This procedure is super complex because it involves many different parts of the body. About 50% of people who get this surgery done end up having at least one complication happen. The complications include… “internal bleeding, infection at the surgical sites, numbness, fat necrosis, persistent pain, swelling in the legs, asymmetries, cardiac and pulmonary problems, skin loss, and of course scarring.” So overall any surgery you are going to go in for is going to have its risks, the risks vary depending on your age, weight, height, and what your overall health is. But my advice to you all is whatever procedure you are considering make sure you know all the possible risks that could happen. –lex http://health.alot.com/wellness/10-of-the-riskiest-plastic-surgery-procedures---8886/?s=9

Week #10 (Blog 2)
So if you read my blog before this you should know that I decided to get breast augmentation surgery last week. To give an update on how I’m doing is I’m doing really good, my pain has gown down tremendously and I have finally weened myself off of my pain killers and have just started to use Ibuprofen, (which is awesome because some people tend to get addicted to pain killers). I also have started this on-going joke with my friends and family that my boobs are almost two weeks old, as if they were born or something, lol. Anyways what I wanted to talk about for the second blog of the week is how I have been affected emotionally through this whole process, I also wanted to talk about how others have reacted when they find out I got a boob job. So throughout this whole recovery process it has been super frustrating not being able to work out and all you do is sit around and eat a lot of food, which in turn means for meaning gaining weight. And with me being a teenage girl any pound that I gain makes you feel bad about yourself. But, luckily I have a loving mother who reminds me that once I am fully healed I can work out again and lose the weight. I would have to say that getting this surgery has boosted my confidence through the roof. I have never felt this womanly in my entire life because I have always had a super flat chest which made me feel somewhat like a boy. And yes I was constantly reminded by my lovely friends and family about how small my boobs were. Now it is like a whole new world, I can actually say that I have something and people can actually see that too! Although that has been an emotional factor as well, I worry about the people that find out about my boob job and that they will judge me for it. With being in high school there is a lot of judgment that goes on and although I have never really been judged I feel like I am a huge target, especially a target for insecure girls who feel the need to be mean just for the satisfaction of it. Luckily I am a senior and I know that the people in high school don’t matter and I honestly and done being around a bunch of immature children. So now that I have explained how I have been feeling emotionally I want to talk about how others are feeling, well at least talk about the people who have expressed their feelings to me. With time, more and more people are finding out about my breast augmentation, which I totally knew it would happen and I don’t plan on trying to keep it a secret from people. (Well except from the gross boys who ask for nude pictures) I mean if I got it flaunt it right? Anyways I have lucked out because I have a ton of loving friends who have been super supportive. They always ask me how I’m doing and tell me that I look really good and that my decision to get my boob job was a really good one. And all of my really close girlfriends always say they want to see my boobs and that I should flash them, I have crazy and probably really inappropriate friends. Usually when people find out in person they admit that they didn’t even notice that I got surgery. Which is what I honestly wanted, I didn’t want no hooker boobs and make everyone feel uncomfortable around me. Although any boys that find out about my surgery tend to get really weird and don’t know what to say. Like trust me I know what you’re thinking boys, you want to know what they looked like before and now and don’t worry I’m not going to show you. Overall, I have had overwhelming support from everyone, they are always worried if I’m feeling ok and if they can bring me anything. Despite having the odds against me and having the majority of people think cosmetic surgery is not something for teens I’m glad to say that getting surgery was definitely the right decision for me even though I am only 17. And to all you young girls out there that have been bothered by something on your body and you get the opportunity to change it I say DO IT! -lex

Week #10 (blog 1)
Hello! I hope everyone's spring break was amazing! I really can't say mine was good or bad because I was on a lot of painkillers. Why you may ask? Well I finally got my breast augmentation surgery, which means I finally have some boobs! I am so happy with my results, they look natural and are the perfect size to be proportional to my body type. So because I got to experience what breast surgery is all about I figured I would talk about it for my first blog of week 10. I feel like this blog could be useful to someone who is considering breast augmentation and hearing someone else's experience can be reassuring to their decision, anyways let's get started! So I went in for surgery Monday on the 20th at nine in the morning. The place I went to was Revere Health in American Fork, my plastic surgeon was Dr. Mark Jensen who is a super cool guy who I highly recommend. When you walk into his office you are greeted with smiling faces that are all excited for you to get your surgery. After I was sent into an exam room Dr. Jensen came in and made sure I was ready to go, he makes you feel super comfortable and confident in your decision to get cosmetic surgery even with me being a teenager. Then it was time, the moment I had been waiting for for years, a nurse took me into the operating room where they put on a heating blanket and made sure my favorite music was on just to make me feel more comfortable. The anesthesiologist then put in my IV and the world turned black. The next thing I knew was that my chest felt really tight, like all they had done was put a really tight sports bra on me. Tears started to roll down my face but not because of pain, it was because I was so happy! I finally had what I wanted! I also started to cry about how much I loved my mom and boyfriend and how I wanted lots of new things. (Thanks drugs for making me not be able to control my emotions and continue to cry for 30 more minutes. Just kidding.) We waited till I seemed to be good enough to wake up and I was wheeled out to my car. For the next hour drive home my tears of joy turned to pain as my drugs started to where off. I didn't stop crying until I was given more pain killers and food. Thanks to the painkillers they totally make you feel narcoleptic and you randomly just fall asleep for two hours. The first two days were super frustrating, every movement you made was super slow and thanks again to the pain killers there was no chance of going number two... On the bright side though I had multiple friends and family come over and give me there love, support, and even cupcakes that looked like little boobs. With all the support from my friends I really started to enjoy the fact that I got boobs. Although I was scared to see what they finally looked like when it was time to shower. Most doctors say you will hate how they look and that they won't look right at first so I was really scared. When it came time for the unveiling I was stressing out, I finally took my bra off and was so pleasantly surprised that I couldn't stop looking at them! They looked so good and cute and it was almost like love at first sight:) I will be honest though taking a shower was like heaven and hell, it felt so amazing to get clean and have the warm water running on you but trying to wash your hair and body used up every inch of my energy. Once I got out I could barely put my clothes on and I'm pretty sure I took a three hour nap. As the week went on the pain subsided and it only felt as if I was sore from lifting weights. Overall, I am happy:) My advice to people who are wondering if they should get breast augmentation surgery is get the surgery now! Why wait any longer to look your very best and feel good about yourself? I am proud to be an example of teens who get cosmetic surgery, I see absolutely nothing wrong with altering your body at a young age if it makes you love yourself even more! Even though the surgery was painful for a few days I think it is well worth it. As the saying goes, "No pain, no gain." :) -lex

Week #9 (Blog 2)
Lexie Dagley Professor Smith English 2010 March 14, 2017 Synthesis Paper: Benefits of Cosmetic Surgery With beauty being integrated into everyday life, more people are choosing to go under the knife and have cosmetic surgery done. Some people tend to say that cosmetic surgery is done out of vanity and is only for self-improvement. Also believing it is an unnecessary risk to take for trying to improve different features on the body. While others believe that cosmetic surgery can change a person for the better and increase the quality of life. “It has been said that plastic surgery won’t add years to your life, but will add life to your years.” (“9 Ways Plastic Surgery,”2016) Having a cosmetic procedure done will definitely change the way a person looks. This is just one of the many benefits that cosmetic surgery has to offer. Although cosmetic surgery is usually seen as just a procedure to improve how the body looks, getting cosmetic surgery also has multiple health benefits such as; improving physical health, improving mental health, and inducing a healthier lifestyle. Cosmetic surgery has been known as a type of surgery that makes people look better, but it also has the ability to improve people’s physical health. Depending upon what type of surgery the patient gets, some cosmetic surgery procedures can improve physical health as well as improving beauty. There are three major procedures that can be done to improve appearance and has physical health benefits. The first procedure is a breast reduction. “Breast reduction can have a dramatic impact on a woman’s posture and almost always results in relief from neck, shoulder and back pain.” (“9 Ways Plastic Surgery,”2016) This procedure benefits women by improving their tolerance to exercises that put extra pressure on the neck, shoulders, and back. The next procedure is a rhinoplasty or nose job. “If someone suffers from a deviated septum, this can be fixed during the surgery, which will then lead to improved breathing and no more snoring.” (“Top 5 benefits of plastic surgery,”2014) A rhinoplasty not only benefits the patient but also the patient’s spouse that will not have to listen to snoring anymore. The final procedure is liposuction. “Liposuction also has added benefits beyond an improved appearance. For one thing, people who weigh less have a lower risk for heart conditions. People with less weight on them can also improve things like blood pressure and cholesterol more easily than those with a lot of weight. You will also benefit because your joints will not have as much pressure on them, easing joint pain and stiffness.” (“Possible benefits of plastic surgery,”2017) Liposuction can make overall movements throughout the body easier by relieving pressure on the joints. These three procedures can help a patient not only look better but improve their physical health. Not only can cosmetic surgery improve a person’s physical health, depending on the person’s motive for surgery it can also improve their mental health. “The usual intent of plastic surgery is to improve one’s physical appearance and, to that end, most patients end up feeling much better about how they look. The natural outcome of this is an increase in self-esteem which often drives additional beneficial feelings and activities.” (“9 Ways Plastic Surgery,”2014) This will increase a person’s mental health because when a person has more self-esteem they tend to be more confident in the things that they do. “When you look good, you feel good. Improvements to appearance naturally translate to increased self-confidence for most people, which means a greater willingness to try new things or open up in social situations.” (“5 benefits of plastic surgery,”2015) Cosmetic surgery benefits patients because it helps them become more outgoing to others, which in turn could improve the social relationships that they make. “Self-esteem is probably the most valuable of all of the health benefits to be derived from plastic surgery. How the patient feels about him/herself and how they see themselves adding value to the world greatly improves when they feel better about how they look.” (“9 Ways Plastic Surgery,”2016) This is an essential benefit in people’s lives, cosmetic surgery can lift someone’s self-worth which can affect the way a person behaves and how they perform daily tasks. Cosmetic surgery will not only improve a person’s mental health but introduce a person to living a healthy lifestyle. “Patients seeking body contouring such as liposuction or a tummy tuck, may find it is easier to keep the weight down after their plastic surgery. The positive results of the procedure may motivate the person to maintain a healthy diet and exercise program to keep their weight in check. A healthy weight can also lead to a healthier body and reduced risk for some types of diseases.” (“5 benefits of plastic surgery,”2015) Liposuction can help boost a person’s motivation by helping them lose that few couple of pounds, motivating them to lose more. Sometimes the procedure desired requires the patient to be healthy before the procedure, “Ideal candidates for tummy tuck and liposuction are physically healthy and have realistic expectations of the outcomes of their surgery.” (“Beyond Vanity,”2013) This means that even before the procedure is done the surgery is promoting the patient to live a healthier lifestyle. “An overall healthier lifestyle is often the result of plastic surgery. When a patient has spent the money, gone through the recovery time, and sees the end result they often develop a mindset and action plan to retain those positive results. An improved diet and a regular exercise program is often the case with the patient living a healthier, happier and more satisfying lifestyle.” (“9 Ways Plastic Surgery,”2016) Surgery can beneficial because it can give the patient a preview of what a healthier life can look like. Overall, cosmetic surgery is more than procedures that help a person look better, and is done out of vanity. “Many people believe that undergoing cosmetic surgery is a luxury reserved for the wealthy. However, the purposes of cosmetic procedures extend further than vanity.” (“Top 5 benefits of plastic surgery,”2014) Most people’s opinions are that cosmetic is nothing more than making the recipient of surgery look better. “During the decision making process, the positive health benefits to be obtained usually take a back seat to just ‘looking better’.” (“9 Ways Plastic Surgery,”2016) Despite what others think there are multiple health benefits to having a cosmetic procedure done, the benefits are just not as noticeable as what the patient’s physical appearance turns out to be. These benefits are sometimes hidden from others and are not noticed until a physical change happens in the patient. Cosmetic surgery can help more than just how a person looks; it can help a person’s physical health, mental health, and show them how to live a healthier lifestyle. Week #9 (Blog 1)
Hello! Its week nine which means it is almost Spring Break an it also means a lot of college students are stressing out over midterms and high school students are stressing out because it is almost the end of term. Lucky me I am both a college student and a high school student so I currently have a lot of stress while trying to get my sh*t together. With all this stress I find myself at sometimes wanting to pull my hair out because I don’t know how to do an assignment no matter how many questions I ask, (aka the Synthesis Paper). But luckily with all this hair that I’m figuratively pulling out or that has actually fallen out from how much stress I have, there is a solution to replace it all! Actually a few solutions and that is what I want to talk about for my blog this week. Having done so much research on cosmetic surgery I have come across hair transplants a few times; briefly reading about the procedure and not paying much attention to how it is done. I figured that now would be a good time to actually see what it’s all about, so let’s get started aye? So first off the reasons as to why we lose our hair in the first place can be because of aging, and change in hormones, or having family history of baldness. (this is why hair falls out during stress) To fix the problem you can either get hair transplants done, flap surgery, tissue expansion of the scalp, or scalp reduction surgery. I’m going to expand. So the first procedure is hair transplants, it sounds simple enough, just take good hair and transplant it in right? We it’s almost right but there is a little more involved. A piece of the patient’s scalp is removed where the hair grows nicely. This piece of scalp is then put into a special machine where the hair follicles are removed and later on reinjected into the patients scalp and the site of baldness. This is the most common type of procedure done to replace hair. The next procedure is called flap surgery which to me honestly sounds kind of gross. The procedure also involves cutting out a piece of scalp from the patient but then the scalp is replaced onto the patient’s head like a skin graft. This procedure is done in areas that are totally bald. The third procedure is called tissue expansion, the procedure does exactly what the title portrays. In the procedure the hair bearing tissue is expanded across the scalp into bald areas so that the baldness is then covered. The last procedure is scalp reduction surgery which to me sounds intense. This procedure is done by simply cutting out the scalp that is bald and bringing together the hair bearing areas of the scalp. The type of surgery you decide on getting depends on the downtime you want to go through. It also depends on what type of procedure the plastic surgeon decides will work best for you. Although I listed ways you can get back your hair surgically that definitely is not all the solutions to fixing baldness. Besides paying a lot of money for having procedures done there are many products out there that can help regrow hair and can make hair thicker. But there is a catch to these products and that is they affect everyone differently and might not give you the results you were hoping for. The top five hair products for regrowth are 1. HairNu 2. Aviva advanced hair nutrition 3. Har Vokse hair growth 4. J.F. Lazartigue 5. Simply Supplements. Customers having rated all of these products and most have been really satisfied with the results. Anyways I wanted to end this blog with giving out my own tips about how you can save your hair, let me note that these tips have worked for me personally and I cannot guarantee that they will work for you. The main thing I do is only wash my hair 2-3 times a week, this gives my hair a break from the shampoo stripping it. The second thing I do is hang my head upside down for two minutes while massaging my scalp. And the third thing I do is try to do a hair mask at least once a month, whether that means buying a hair mask or making one at home. Well I hope these tips will help save your hair. –lex https://www.plasticsurgery.org/cosmetic-procedures/hair-replacement http://hairgrowths.org/top-five-hair-growth-products/?gclid=CjwKEAjwqZ7GBRC1srKSv9TV_iwSJADKTjaD6sHtv_fgnvew6okK_DpPb_0FvXtebmNiI4G2vbyGDxoC_R_w_wcB

Week #8 (Blog 2)
So unfortunately my neighbor that lives down the street from me was diagnosed with breast cancer about a month ago. She decided to get a double mastectomy instead of doing radiation treatments in hopes that the cancer would go away. Now that she has no breasts she is currently deciding on what type of breast reconstruction she should do and that is what I wanted to talk about. I wanted to talk about the different options women are given for another chance at having breasts. Sometimes the results of breast reconstruction surgery turn out even better then what some women’s breasts looked like before a mastectomy. Anyways, what I found out is there are many solutions of breast reconstruction that women can choose from and I have chosen to talk about the two main types of reconstruction and even an option for a prosthesis. Although it is important for women to ask themselves, “How important is rebuilding your breast to you? Will breast reconstruction help you to feel whole again? Are you ok with having more surgery for breast reconstruction after mastectomy?”. These type of questions help guide women to what option they want to pick, which can even mean having no reconstruction surgery done and just living with a flat chest. So let us talk about what the two main options for reconstruction are and how a breast prosthesis works. The first option is pretty popular, and that is getting breast implants inserted. Implants can either be inserted at the same time as a cancer removal surgery, in a one step process; or it can be done in a two-step process which means the implant process can be started during a cancer removal surgery and can be finished in another surgery. In the one step reconstruction a skin graft holds the implant in place such as a hammock or sling. In the two step reconstruction tissue expanders are put in after the cancer filled breast tissue is removed, the expander helps expand the tissue naturally to the desired size of the patient and is initially left in for 2-3 months before they are replaced with implants. These two options do have the risk of needing more surgery, either because of a ruptured implant, scar tissue that has formed, or the shape of the implant has deflated. The second option for breast reconstruction is when you use your own tissues to reconstruct your breast by doing what are called flap procedures. Tissue flap procedures use tissue from other parts of your body: tummy, back, thighs, or butt. This procedure tends to look the most natural and feel the most like breast tissue and will enlarge and shrink with weight loss or weight gain. Although the outcome might look more natural there is more surgery and recovery time are involved than an implant reconstruction. There are four most common types of tissue flap procedures that are done; a TRAM (transverse rectus abdominis muscle) flap which is using tissues from the tummy, a Latissimus dorsi flap which uses the tissue from the upper back, a GAP (gluteal artery perforator) flap which uses tissue from the butt, and a TUG (transverse upper gracilis) flap which uses tissue from the inner thigh. Whatever tissue is used is determined by the plastic surgeon and the patient, deciding on what tissue will reciprocate the best and where the patients doesn’t mind if there is a scar. Lastly I would like to talk about a breast prosthesis option which is an alternative to reconstruction, either a breast prosthesis, also called a breast form, is used when a patient wants to wait on getting breast reconstructive surgery or just doesn’t want to go through surgery at all. A breast form comes in many different shapes and materials. The materials that a patient can choose from are silicone gel, foam, or fiberfill interior. Most types of breast forms slip into a specialty pocket either in a bra, tank top, or even swimsuit. There are other breast forms that have an adhesive backing that sticks right onto where the original breast was, or even a magnet that is placed onto the breast and breast form which snap in place. Overall, there are many different options for breast reconstruction. The ultimate goal for any of these options are to help a women get back to feeling normal again and have their confidence restored after everything that they have gone through.-lex https://www.cancer.org/cancer/breast-cancer/reconstruction-surgery/breast-reconstruction-options/breast-reconstruction-using-implants.html https://www.cancer.org/cancer/breast-cancer/reconstruction-surgery/breast-reconstruction-options/breast-reconstruction-using-your-own-tissues-flap-procedures.html

Week #8 (Blog 1)
It is week eight and I will be honest, it is super difficult to find any motivation to put towards doing school work because spring break is in two weeks, which means I get to head to sunny Saint George. It also means that millions of other women are eager for spring break to start so that they can stay in bathing suits all day and strut their stuff. Although, some women have a hard time accepting what their body looks like and are in need of a little confidence booster, which I like to call cosmetic procedures. For the first blog of week eight I wanted to discuss the type of procedures people get to become beach body ready. I found five different procedures that are the most popular for people to get when trying to obtain the perfect bikini ready body. The first procedure on the list is a Breast Augmentation. This is absolutely no surprise to me considering breast augmentation surgery is ranked as the most popular procedure for women to get. In fact, Google Trends confirms that breast augmentation is at its highest between June and August. This is no surprise considering that women show a lot more cleavage in the summertime because swimsuits are worn more in summer than any other season. The other reason many breast surgeries are done within this time period is female high school graduates are getting ready for the next chapter in their life and want to have a fresh new look. With breast surgery only having minimal downtime, women can be back in their bikinis in just a few weeks. During summer we look in the mirror and can see that our face is changing, either seeing more freckles, our skin getting tanner or burnt, and sometimes sun spots even appear. The second procedure is called a Facial Rejuvenation that is performed by using a hybrid fractional laser or a BBL (broadband light). The laser procedure helps improve the deep and surface layers of the skin. The laser removes skin irregularities such as dark spots and helps even out the texture of your skin making it smooth to the touch. The BBL procedure is a laser that helps treat brown spots, red areas, and active acne. Although these procedures are performed more in the summer, before and after the treatment you are advised to keep your face out of the sun. The third procedure is called Spider Vein Treatments. Spider Veins are dilated capillaries that are visible that usually appear on the lower leg. This causes women to go in for treatments because in the summer you often wear clothing that doesn’t cover your legs. For this treatment the same lasers are used as the one used for Facial Rejuvenation which damage the vein and close off its source of blood. Another option is called Sclerotherapy which is injecting saline into the veins which then scar and retract into the body within a few weeks. The next procedure is a Brazilin Butt Lift, which is done by liposuction throughout the body. The surgeon takes fat around the tummy of the patient and reinjects it into the butt, trying to create the desired shape that the patient wants. The reason it is called a Brazilin Butt Lift is because the procedure was created in Brazil and Brazilian women are known to have big, round butts. Most women would desire a butt lift in the summer because when put in a swimsuit your butt can be very exposed. Although, this procedure is just temporary because the fat that is injected into the butt can be reabsorbed into the body and into whatever form the body wants to naturally shape it. The last procedure that women get in preparation for summer is Cellulite Removal. Cellulite is when fat pushes up through the connective bands of the surface skin, causing a deviate in the skin. It is estimated that 90% of women have cellulite but still many women want their cellulite gone especially when you show a lot more skin than normal in the summer. There are two treatments that can be done to make cellulite disappear. The first is called Cellfina which is a micro-blade on the end of a needle that cuts the bands of tissue which releases the fat. The second treatment is called Cool Sculpting which is a machine that freezes the fat cells underneath the skin, ultimately destroying the fat cells which get reabsorbed into the body. Overall, these are just five of the multiple cosmetic procedures that you can have done to get ready for summer. –lex http://www.zwivel.com/blog/cosmetic-procedures-for-a-bikini-body/

Dagley 9 Lexie Dagley Professor Smith English 2010 February 28, 2017 Annotated Bibliography CBS News staff. “13 bizarre but popular plastic surgery procedures.” CBS News, http://www.cbsnews.com/pictures/13-bizarre-but-popular-plastic-surgery-procedures/6/. 2011 In “13 bizarre but popular plastic surgery procedures”, CBS News interviewed Dr. Tony Youn to construct this article with multiple pictures of different cosmetic procedures that have short summaries attached to them. This article is about types of cosmetic procedures that people want and are frequently going through with. There are thirteen different procedures that the author briefly discusses in a description next to a before and after picture of a patient who had a said procedure done. The procedures discussed are six pack creation, grin lift, upper lip lift, bra line back lift, belly button surgery, chubby cheek surgery, jawline reduction, gummy smile repair, jawline reduction/advancement, eyelash transplant, dimple creation, nipple and areola reduction, and plastic surgery done on private parts. Although, the article’s information would have to be confirmed by researching Dr. Tony Youn’s book, In Stiches.; it is a sufficient article for being interesting while obtaining information. This article is helpful by informing people about what cosmetic surgeries are performed the most. Moss, Hilary. “7-Year-Old Samantha Shaw Gets Plastic Surgery to Prevent Bullying.” The Huffington Post, http://m.huffpost.com/us/entry/849156. 14 Jun. 2011. In “7-Year-Old Samantha Shaw Gets Plastic Surgery to Prevent Bullying” by Hilary Moss, she writes about first grader Samantha Shaw that was getting bullied for her ears that stuck out. The bullying got so bad that Samantha resulted to getting cosmetic surgery to pin back her ears, ever since the bullying has subsided. Samantha’s surgery was performed for free through Little Baby Face Foundation by Dr. Steven Pearlman. The author asked Pearlman if he suggests surgery to avoid plastic surgery and his response is that if the surgery is minor and only cosmetic it should not be performed. There is also a video attached to this article but the author’s article explains the video. The article shows that cosmetic surgery can be done on a child for a deeper reason then just changing something on the body because it does not look right. The information is reliable because it is coming straight from the source in an interview. Daily Mail Reporter. “'Stalking Cat' Daniel Avner found dead in 'suicide' after years of transforming his face to look like a feline.” Daily Mail, http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2232523/Stalking-Cat-Daniel-Avner-dead-possible-suicide-years-transforming-face-look-like-feline.html. 13 Nov. 2012. The article, “Stalking Cat: Daniel Avner found dead in suicide after years of transforming his face to look like a feline” written by a Daily Mail Reporter, is about a man named Dennis Avner and the reason why he devoted years to transforming his body to look like a cat. The author writes about Avner’s life, discussing the types of procedures Avner went through such as splitting his lip, pointing his ears, having cheek and forehead implants inserted, and having multiple piercings and tattoos. He also went by the name “Stalking Cat”. Avner was a computer programmer that often appeared at Ripley’s Believe It or Not events around the world before he passed away. Although the article titled Dennis’s name wrong this article helps people understand more about Dennis Avner’s life and the reason why he devoted so much time into transforming into a cat. This information was a good example of a reason why someone would go to extreme measures through cosmetic surgery. Hein, Alexandria. “The Dragon Lady: Plastic surgeon warns on dangers of body modification.” Fox News Health, https://www.google.com/amp/www.foxnews.com/health/2016/09/01/dragon-lady-plastic-surgeon-warns-on-dangers-body-modification.amp.html?client=safari. 1 Sept. 2016. In Alexandria Hein’s article, “The Dragon Lady: Plastic surgeon warns on dangers of body modification” she talks about the dangerous life that Eva Tiamat Baphhomet Medusa has been living for the past twenty years. The article talks about Eva’s transformation over time and how it all started after her birth parents abandoned her. Eva believes that she was born unto reptilian parents and should honor them by transforming into a rattlesnake. Her transformation has including subdermal implants, removal of the ears, removing the cartilage and reshaping the nose, dying the whites of her eyes, splitting of the tongue, and full body tattoos. To conclude the article, the author adds that extremities are cut off due to the need for amputation because of cancer or trauma to the body part, not just for the want to take them off. Plastic surgeon Dr. Matthew Schulman says, “In general, these can be dangerous procedures”. Although the article is a short biography of the Dragon Lady’s life it is very informative as to why she has transformed her body in the way that she did. This will give people the full story as to why she made such decisions. It also shows that what Eva is doing can be extremely dangerous, which can be presented as a warning to others. ODDEE staff. “10 Worst Plastic Surgery Disasters.” ODDEE, http://www.oddee.com/item_96587.aspx. 27 Feb. 2009. In the article “10 Worst Plastic Surgery Disasters” written by an ODDEE, ten different peoples botched surgery results are discussed. The article provides pictures of each of these ten people with a brief description of their story. The ten people are Hang Mioku, Jocelyn Wildenstein, Michael Jackson, Pete Burns, Dennis Avner, Eric Sprague, Donatella Versace, Jackie Stallone, Amanda Lepore, and Michaela Romanini. Most of these ten people are people who got addicted to cosmetic surgery and abused these procedures. This article’s goal is to inform the public of what can happen when cosmetic surgery goes wrong or when people get addicted to receiving cosmetic surgery. The article serves as a good warning, presenting pictures of the patients with botched surgery results. Erupting Mind staff. “Types of Plastic Surgery Procedures.” Erupting Mind, http://www.eruptingmind.com/types-of-plastic-surgery-procedures/. 30 Mar. 2016. The following article, “Types of Plastic Surgery Procedures” written by Erupting Mind, is an overview of types of cosmetic procedures that you can choose from. In this article the author states that there are actually over fifty procedures you can choose from, not just the popular procedures such as a nose job, breast augmentation, or face lift. The author describes each procedure; the procedures described are a facelift, eyelid surgery, forehead lift, facial implants, nose job, breast surgery, body contouring, and non-surgical procedures such as Botox, dermal fillers, chemical peels, laser skin resurfacing, and microdermabrasion. The article also mentions what types of surgery men and women are getting and at what age. This article informs people of what to expect from each procedure and how the procedure will change the way your body looks. It is also reassuring to know what type of procedures men and women are getting. Unknown. “New Statistics Reflect the Changing Face of Plastic Surgery” American Society of Plastic Surgeons, https://www.plasticsurgery.org/news/press-releases/new-statistics-reflect-the-changing-face-of-plastic-surgery. The following article was put together by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, (ASPS), titled “New Statistics Reflect the Changing Face of Plastic Surgery”. This article is all about statistics that were compiled together in 2015 about different types of procedures. Procedures such as breast lifts, butt lifts, lower body lifts, upper arm lifts, butt implants, and butt augmentation. The top 5 cosmetic surgical and minimally-invasive procedures are listed. This article also talks about the percentage of men that are getting cosmetic surgery, that more breast cancer patients are aware of reconstruction options, and about how the ASPS annual procedural statistics are obtained. This article contributed to my research because the facts are legitimate that were gathered by the ASPS. The article is every bit informative with numbers and percentages about how cosmetic surgery is progressing and changing. Gardner, Stephanie S. “Teens and Plastic Surgery.” WebMD, http://teens.webmd.com/teens-plastic-surgery?page=1. 30 Jan. 2017. In “Teens and Plastic Surgery” by Stephanie S. Gardner there are four points being discussed; why do teens seek plastic surgery, what are common plastic surgery procedures for teens, things for teens to consider before plastic surgery, and is plastic surgery right for you. The first section suggests that teens want surgery to increase self-esteem, to fit in with others, and to stop people from making fun of them. The second section lists common surgeries that teens do, such as, rhinoplasty, otoplasty, chin augmentation, breast asymmetry correction, breast reduction, gynecomastia, and laser treatment or dermabrasion. The next point section suggests tips to decide whether or not plastic surgery is for you; saying things such as surgery will not solve all your problems, surgery won’t make people like you, your new looks will not bring more success, etc. The article is a helpful guide for teens and also parents with teens that are considering going through with cosmetic surgery. The article although is full of bias opinion instead of based upon facts. Pesce, Nicole Lyn. “Teen plastic surgery peaks before heading back to school.” Daily News Lifestyle, http://www.nydailynews.com/life-style/teen-plastic-surgery-peaks-heading-back-school-article-1.2335968. 24 Aug. 2015. In “Teen plastic surgery peaks before heading back to school” Nicole Lyn Pesce discusses the rise of teens going in for cosmetic procedures has reached to about 64,000 teens a year. The author interviewed a few girls who had decided cosmetic surgery was the way to go. The first patient who was 17 went up two cups sizing saying she feels so much happier now and more comfortable. Another patient was a girl who had broken her nose multiple times with left her with a large bump on her nose, the only way to fix it was cosmetic surgery. The last patient that was interviewed was an 18-year-old girl who developed size DDD when she was only 14. The patient uncomfortable in gym class, felt she looked ridiculous in most tops, and hated going to the beach. All three patients are happy with their decision of taking the plastic surgery route. With being real life stories of teenage girls who went through with plastic surgery and are extremely happy with their results, this shows people that plastic surgery can be a positive option for teenagers. Depending on their circumstance. Olya, Gabrielle. “The Newest Back-to-School Must-have for Teens? Cosmetic Surgery” People bodies, http://people.com/bodies/thousands-of-teens-are-undergoing-cosmetic-surgery-procedures/. 28 Aug. 2015. Gabrielle Olya’s article “The Newest Back-to-School Must-have for Teens? Cosmetic Surgery” talks about the rise of teenagers signing up for a cosmetic procedure. The article mentions that famous 17-year-old Kylie Jenner isn’t the only teen getting lip fillers. The author interviewed Dr. Richard Ellenbogen, who mentions that the procedures teens are getting are related to procedures reality TV stars are getting. Ellenbogen says that the most common procedures are rhinoplasty, breast augmentation, male breast reduction, ear surgery, and dermabrasion. Other procedures are denied until the patient is older. The article is a reliable source because the information is coming straight from a plastic surgeon who knows what procedures are done on teens by experience. Although some things mentioned in the article are an opinion, such as, teenage girls only getting surgery because of a reality TV star is getting that surgery. Emster1196. “Should Teenage Girls Be Allowed to get Plastic Surgery” Teen Ink, http://www.teenink.com/nonfiction/academic/article/685433/should-teenage-girls-be-allowed-to-get-plastic-surgery/. In “Should Teenage Girls Be Allowed to get Plastic Surgery” by Emster1196 the main claim is that teenage girls should not be allowed to get plastic surgery. The first reason is because plastic surgery has risks; the possible risks of scarring, getting addicted to plastic surgery, and in a rare case even death. Another reason is the author says most teenage girls get plastic surgery for all the wrong reasons, such as trying to please others instead of herself. The last reason teenage girls should not be allowed to get plastic surgery is because teenage girls lack emotional and mental maturity to be able to realize the long term effects that plastic surgery has on the body. This article is not a reliable source because the claims that are made in this article are nothing but the authors opinion. The author also tries to generalize that all teenage girls have the same maturity level and develop the same, which is not true. Cardiff, Ashley. “13-Year-Old Long Island Girl Gets Plastic Surgery To Avoid Being Teased.” The Gloss, http://www.thegloss.com/beauty/13-year-old-long-island-girl-gets-plastic-surgery-to-avoid-being-teased-342/. 13 Oct. 2011. The article “13-Year-Old Long Island Girl Gets Plastic Surgery to Avoid Being Teased” was written by Ashley Cardiff of the reason why 13-year-old Nicolette Taylor decided to get a nose job. Nicolette was getting teased multiple times a week for a large bump on the bridge of her nose from it being broken twice. Kids were bullying non-stop, at school and even at home on social media. Nicolette’s parents justified the situation by saying that people buy their children braces to straighten their teeth so why is it bad to straighten out their daughter’s nose? The author concluded by asking if using plastic surgery as a drastic Band-Aid is a good way in helping self-esteem develop. This article is another good example of how plastic surgery can be a positive solution rather than a negative one. It shows that Nicolette lives a much happier life because of her decision to get a nose job.

Week #7 (Blog 1)
Hello! It’s week 7 of writing blogs and I couldn’t be more happy. We are a little over half way done with writing blogs which means we are closer to being done with school, which means summer is getting closer, which means happiness! Anyways, for this blog I wanted to discuss three different different types of breast implants that you can choose from. I also wanted talk about the advantages and disadvantages about each implant and which type of implant most people prefer. This first type of implant I want to discuss is the silicone implant, this type of implant is what most plastic surgeons prefer and what most women have inserted. Although the history of this implant is astonishing; the first silicone implants were developed in 1961, nothing changed until 1982 when silicone implants started leaking silicone liquid causing safety hazards. The FDA took them off the market until 2006 when they had a new design making them one of the safest implants to get. The new implants are filled with silicone gel so that if they were to leak the gel would stay inside the tissue pocket were the implant is placed. The advantages to getting silicone implants is that the silicone gel feels more like natural breast tissue. It also less likely to ripple making the breast look unnatural. The disadvantages to silicone implants is that they are more expensive then other implants. There also has to be a larger incision to insert a silicone implant which may cause more scarring. Also if the implant ruptures the only way to know for sure is by getting an MRI. The second most popular implant is the saline implant. This implant has an elastometer shell and is filled with saline solution, saline is a sterile salt water solution. Although not very many women get saline implants it was not always this way. After the FDA took silicone implants off the market women were replacing their silicone implants with saline as a safer solution. This put saline implants into first place until silicone was improved and re-approved by the FDA. The advantages of saline implants are that they are not as expensive as silicone implants and they have a low scarring risk. They also are very easy to detect a rupture in the implant because when the implant ruptures the saline gets drained out and enters into the body, thus showing a deflated breast. This is also another benefit of saline because the solution is non-toxic and doesn’t harm the body when ruptured. Although there are many advantages to saline there are multiple disadvantages as well. There is a higher risk of rippling in this implant because it is liquid and not gel. Women have also reported that saline implants do not feel as natural as the silicone implants. Saline implants also have a higher risk of rupturing due to the thinner solution then silicone. The next implant is called the form stable implant, this implant also goes by the name of the gummy bear implant because of its consistency. The consistency of the implant is the same as a gummy bear, hence the name, if you were to cut this implant in half it would hold its shape in two separate pieces. The shape of this implant is a tear drop shape to resemble what the natural shape of a normal breast should be, thinner on top fuller on bottom. This implant is fairly new and has gotten the FDA approval after an eight year clinical trial had been performed. This implant has been on the market for about 8-9 years. Many women who have received these implants report much higher satisfaction results then with the other implants. The implants show no problems so far but only time will tell if these new implants will be able to last. There are multiple advantages to these implants such as little to no risk of rippling due to the thick gel, if the implant is ruptured there is no risk of liquid or gel spilling out into the body. It is also believed that getting these implants only one surgery is needed with no replacement surgeries. The only disadvantage that has been discovered so far is that the implant is more expensive then the silicone and saline implants. In my opinion I think that the gummy bear implant is the best implant to get if you are looking for a dependable implant that holds it shape. Although it is the most expensive implant it is what most women are getting inserted today, this is the implant my mother has and it is the implant that I'm getting. It's the best option out there so far.-lex

Week #6 (Blog 2)
Week six and it is getting sort of difficult to find interesting information. Because I mean let’s be real for a second, not every bit of information is going to be interesting. It might be relevant to your research topic but it is just not interesting and I’m too happy to be talking about boring things. For this blog I wanted to take a break from talking about research that I have found and discuss the reasoning behind my decision to schedule a breast augmentation surgery in this up-coming March. I know this blog is going to get really personal really quick but I think it is super important to share my personal opinion and soon to be experience on teenagers getting cosmetic surgery done, especially when my last blog had to deal with another person’s opinion about teenagers getting cosmetic surgery. So I’m 17 and about to finish my senior year of high school, unfortunately I’m the girl that ended up not developing boobs like all the other girls in my grade. This for me is super uncomfortable when all the other girls are going up in bra sizes and I have had the same bra for multiple years. To be blunt my boobs are small, some might think they are a good size but I don’t, and they just straight up bother me. Besides my opinion about my boobs many others have seem to voice their opinion to me in agreeance with what I think. Every single family member, including extended family, has told me my boobs are small. Friends and my own boyfriend have agreed that my boobs are unnaturally small. This has been going on for years, probably close to six years and trust me it takes a toll on your confidence. It’s not that my family and friends are trying to be mean and tell me to change how I look; it is just the truth that by boobs are much smaller then what the normal size should be for a girl my age. Although it might seem that I’m getting a breast augmentation for others and not myself that’s not the case, I have always thought I was smaller than other girls and have felt like I was different and not in a good way. For so long I have been unhappy with the size of my boobs and the way they look in swimsuits, clothes, or just bare. They are something that I either have to deal with or get surgery to fix my imperfection. There are no more growth spurts that I can count on, I’ve been to two different doctors and they both confirmed my boobs are done growing. Hearing that sucks! This is where my decision making process really started, even though I knew I wanted to get surgery done in the future I never really considered getting surgery before I graduated high school. After talking to my parents they totally agreed, if I knew I was going to get a breast augmentation why wait any longer and just get it done now. Why wait to get the boobs that u have wanted for a long time? Now some people believe that teens shouldn’t get cosmetic surgery because they will just have to get more surgery down the road to account for a teens developing body. But with a breast augmentation surgery there already is a second surgery that you have to get down the road no matter what age you are, the FDA requires that you change out your breast implants every 15-20 years. I believe that teens who are getting cosmetic surgery now exactly what they are getting into. Just from my experience of going to see a plastic surgeon they ask you multiple questions to make sure you are getting cosmetic surgery for purposeful reasons and that it is what you really want to do. I seriously am so excited to finally change a part of my body that has been bugging me for a long time. I get my surgery done in 25 days and you better believe I am counting down the days until my surgery. I can only imagine that almost all teenage girls getting cosmetic surgery to change something they don’t like on their body feel the same way as me. So overall I believe that age is not something we should be worrying about when it comes to cosmetic surgery. -lex

Week #6 (Blog 1)
Lexie Dagley Professor Smith English 2010 February 15, 2017 Rhetorical Analysis Part 2 Whenever something happens that is unnatural or different from what people do every day, people seem to form opinions, good or bad, about the situation. This situation is about if teenage girls should or should not be getting cosmetic surgery. In the article titled, Should teenage girls be allowed to get plastic surgery, it talks about the reasons why teenage girls should not be getting cosmetic surgery. The author, Emster1196, believes that, “Most of the time it’s [cosmetic surgery] not for health reasons; it’s because they believe it will make other people like them more and make them feel better about themselves due to their low-self-esteem.” (Teen Ink) She makes three claims on why teenage girls should not be getting cosmetic surgery. The first claim is that cosmetic surgery has multiple risks; the risk of scarring, getting addicted to receiving cosmetic surgery, and in rare cases death from complications in surgery. The second claim is the author believes that teenagers are getting cosmetic surgery for the wrong reasons, such as, trying to please someone else like a boyfriend, family, friends, etc. The author’s third claim is that teenage girls are not emotionally stable enough to commit to life changing procedures, thinking cosmetic surgery will solve all their problems. Although, the authors makes claims that cause concern these are not sufficient arguments because something that has risks does not mean there is no reward, teenager girls get cosmetic surgery for multiple reasons not just for other people, and teenage girls that have thought a lot about cosmetic surgery know they want it. Almost every major decision that is made in life has its risks and rewards. There is always going to be risks whenever having a medical procedure done but that is the price to pay to change something on the body. Most risks are minimal such as a small incision scar which most plastic surgeons tend to hide in the creases and folds of the skin. Emster1196 states, “When someone gets a procedure for the first time it might not five them the wanted results so they end up going back to get another procedure to make it the way they do want it. This can continue on and on until they’re practically a different person.” (Teen Ink) This isn’t always true, sometimes the first procedure is good enough for the patient and they do not have to go through anymore surgery, getting addicted to cosmetic surgery is extremely rare. Death from complications in cosmetic surgery is also rare, because most cosmetic procedures are not dealing with main organs in the body most procedures do not disturb the way your body functions. Almost all deaths from complications in surgery deal with the fact that the body was not healthy in the first place. Although, cosmetic surgery has risks teenage girls are still willing to go through with the procedure. Teenage girls get surgery for multiple reasons not just for pleasing other people. “they [teenage girls] get it because they feel the pressure to live up to the unrealistic picture of what people like females should look like,” (Teen Ink). This assumption may apply to some but not everyone, many teenage girls grow up with imperfections that have bugged them their whole life, the decision to change that imperfection is not influenced by others. Making Emster1196’s claim unrealistic. “People are so quick to judge…they don’t know the real story,” (Daily News Lifestyle). There are many cases that have a deeper meaning than others, such as, someone getting breast implants because their cup size is too small, or a 7-year-old girl that was being bullied so bad for her ears sticking out that instead of committing suicide she received cosmetic surgery (The Huffington Post). These are just two of the many examples of reasons to why teenage girls are going in for cosmetic surgeries. People do not always know the reason why teenage girls get cosmetic surgery so it is irrelevant to just assume that every cosmetic surgery done on a teenager is influenced by a stereotype or by others. To be able to decide on a life changing procedure it would take some emotional stability and matureness to make the decision. Emster1196 says, “Teenage girls lack the emotional and mental maturity to make a thoughtful decision on if they should get plastic surgery or not,” (Teen Ink). This is a bold statement for Emster1196 because this claim does not pertain to every teenage girl. Some teenage girls are way more mature than other girls, thus making the Emster1196’s claim about every teenage girl not being mature enough irrelevant. Teenage girls that put years of thought about getting a cosmetic procedure done have more than enough emotional maturity for making a life changing decision. Overall, I would have to disagree with the claims that Emster1196 made in the article, Should teenage girls be allowed to get plastic surgery. Her claims were full of her own opinion instead of hard facts. All of Emster1196’s claims are based on if every teenage girl thought and acted the same about everything. Her claims assume that every single teenage girl should not be allowed to receive cosmetic surgery because of the potential risks, that they are not doing the surgery for themselves, and that every teenage girl is not emotionally mature enough to receive cosmetic surgery. Not everyone knows the full story as to why a teenage girl wants to get cosmetic surgery and people these days’ judge too quickly about the sensitive situation. Many times these procedures are done to boost self-confidence and in extreme cases stop girls from committing suicide because of the bullying they receive from their imperfections. Even if it is just a teenage girls’ wish to be able to receive cosmetic surgery to fix something on her body that she does not like that is ultimately her choice. Works Cited 1. Week #5 (Blog 2)
Wow, this has been a super confusing week on what I should talk about for my blog, I was going to submit my rhetorical analysis paper critiquing an article about a woman who thinks teenagers should not be getting cosmetic surgery, but since the due date for that paper was moved to Monday I had to find another topic to talk about for my second blog for week five. So after throwing around a few topics I finally picked one. I realized that since my topic is anything and everything that relates to cosmetic surgery why not talk about the statistics about how many people are actually getting cosmetic surgery done. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) the rate of people getting cosmetic surgery done is increasing rapidly. Since the year 2000 the numbers of procedures performed have risen 115 percent and in 2015 15.9 million surgeries were performed which was a 2 percent increase from 2014. Not only has there been a dramatic change in numbers of how many people are getting cosmetic surgery but the type of cosmetic procedures being done have dramatically shifted. Back when cosmetic surgery started to become more popular facial procedures and breast augmentations were performed the most. Now that we have many more procedures to offer there is a rise in diversity of procedures that are performed. Although there is diversity in the procedures that are performed, any procedure that deals with lifting a part of the body ranks highest on the list of procedures people want. In my opinion this is probably because when people start to get older and gravity starts to take its course on the body, people wants things back to where they were when they were twenty. Anyways, the ASPS has shown that since 2000 to 2015 Breast lifts have gone up by 89 percent, Butt lifts have gone up by 252 percent, lower body lifts have gone up by 3,973 percent, and upper arm lifts have gone up by 4,959 percent. After finding this research concerning exponential growth of the number of cosmetic surgeries performed, it shows me that people were and are starting to accept getting cosmetic surgery procedures done. The growth could also be related to the different types of procedures that are offered, meaning that there are more imperfections that could be fixed on the body, thus intriguing more people to get cosmetic surgery. Also, “The number of available providers, lower costs and the less-invasive nature of these procedures obviously appeal to a much broader range of patients,” (PlasticSurgery). Even men started to participate in getting cosmetic surgery done, in 2015 68,106 breast reduction surgeries were performed and 40 percent of those surgeries were performed on men. This was a total of 27,456 breast reduction surgeries that were performed, cosmetic surgery is becoming more accepted by men. Although usually these breast reduction surgeries are performed on younger more who genetically have enlarged breasts. Of the 1.7 million procedures performed in 2015, the top five procedures were: Breast augmentation at 279,143 procedures, Liposuction at 222,051 procedures, Nose reshaping at 217,979 procedures, eyelid surgery at 203,934 procedures, and tummy tuck at 127,967 procedures. So because I introduced the facts that I obtained by researching I just want to give my opinion on them. I absolutely believe that people started to get cosmetic surgery because there finally was something to do to fix anything that you don’t like about yourself. Being able to make your breasts look nicer, face look younger, do liposuction to get rid of stubborn fat you just can’t seem to get off; that just seems like the deal of a lifetime, I mean if you have the money to do surgery why not do it? I think this is a mindset that many people have, I know it is the mindset that I have. That is why I believe that the amount of surgeries that are being performed are getting much higher because people want to be the perfect “you” and if all it takes is some surgery and money then most people will be willing to change themselves. Overall, I still stand true to how I feel about people getting plastic surgery even if some of the procedures are crazy ridiculous like the “Dragon Lady” that I talked about a few blogs ago. If getting cosmetic surgery done makes you happy then you get that surgery. -lex https://www.plasticsurgery.org/news/press-releases/new-statistics-reflect-the-changing-face-of-plastic-surgery
