Wait, I’m so confused now. I read that Solitus Utopia Mizuki side story and she saying something like “it’s best to wear the clothes you like huh. If everyone thought the way Ena and Kanade did (it’s okay to dress how you want) then maybe life would be a little easier. If only there was a place where you could think anything was cute and no one would say anything” this is like, the ultimate argument for cross dresser Mizuki, only dressing the way she does because she “likes it” and obviously I know that there’s so many other factors that equate to it being apart of her identity, but why does she specificly say here that she just wants to wear the clothes she wants to wear, basically implying she’s bullied for that? And earlier in the story, she says, “being able to do the things you like can also be really hard, there’s gonna be times where you can’t wear the clothes you want to wear” and I’ve seen those who believes she’s a cross dresser use this point and I can never argue against it because I don’t know what to add, is it possible you have any conclusions? I was thinking it correlates to the fact that she’s a trans girl wearing super frilly clothes, which cis girls get picked on for too? (as shown in the story) I just don’t know

When we're thinking about the specific wordings that are used when Mizuki talks about themself, it's important to consider the reality outside the game and how that influences its writing.

It's very clear by how they've written Mizuki that they don't want to say outright that Mizuki is trans, instead leaving it "vague." There's a lot of valuable marketability that comes from not being specific with language around a very controversial topic that in some countries is illegal. In addition, having a character with less "specific" characterization is valuable as it allows a wider variety of people to project themselves onto that character and see themselves.

However, when we look at how Mizuki acts in the story as well as their long term responses to being unable to wear the clothes they like or be treated the way they want to, it's pretty clear that there is some kind of gender dysphoria at play. A crossdresser would not act and respond to things in the way that Mizuki does. I think I iterated this same statement in different ways at least 4 times in my video.

Just because someone says "because I like it" in this regard, it doesn't mean they've said anything about their gender. It especially doesn't make them "not trans." I mean, I'm transfem and I wear the clothes I do because I like them. It's even a completely separate thing from my gender and the way I desire my body to be. What I'm trying to say is that none of what Mizuki is saying is actually defining anything about them other than that they like the clothes that they like. It doesn't point in the direction of crossdresser and it doesn't point in the direction of trans. Both trans people and crossdressers struggle with the same issues. Though, I do think that the extent to which Mizuki struggles with this and ties their presentation so close to their identity points heavily towards them being not cis. This is without even mentioning all the other things that do (watch my video).

If it's any consolation, please take this translated quote from the Ena 5 card artist interview:

I wanted to make a costume that I could feel that Mizuki is Mizuki, valuing Mizuki's uniqueness. It is a design packed with "kawaii" with many ruffles and ribbons that Mizuki likes. The hairstyle is a refreshing short bob cut to renew the feeling. The short hair that I showed for the first time after the special training is "I can be myself in any hairstyle, any outfit". It may be a manifestation of such a feeling of being saved a little by Mizuki .

To say "I can be myself in any hairstyle, any outfit" is so extremely telling of what Mizuki's gender reality actually is. Why would short hair mean that you can't be yourself? Well the answer is pretty simple. The shorter your hair, the more difficult it is to pass as a woman. For Mizuki to take a leap and engage in a form of expression that could endanger others' perception of them implies that they've gained a new feeling of safety due to Ena's actions. The thing is though is that this wouldn't be something that a crossdresser would worry about. In my opinion - which is perhaps wrong - crossdressers don't worry about expressing themselves in the "right" way, which, in this case would be expressing themselves as femininely as possible in order to avoid any suspicion. In contrast, trans women predominantly over-feminize themselves in order to avoid suspicion of their gender and not stand out. Part of this is having long hair. For Mizuki to think that short hair would invalidate their identity would mean that Mizuki thought that they couldn't be whatever "being themself" meant if their hair was too short. This is a uniquely trans experience as far as I know and it really says it all. A crossdresser wouldn't be worrying about these things. A crossdresser wouldn't spend their entire life trying to present and live as a woman. A crossdresser wouldn't be suicidally depressed when they couldn't. If they did, that would mean they had some kind of gender dysphoria.

The point is, Mizuki is trans. They are literally so trans. You need to stop letting people turn neutral statements into statements that "support" their point. They use neutral aspects of Mizuki's character to claim that they are correct, when in reality they haven't done the proper analysis to come to a properly educated conclusion.

I also want to note that being trans is a lot more complex than "I'm a boy" or "I'm a girl." Gender isn't an actual real, tangible thing. It's a made up concept that we all generally can see the threads of and agree on but only because it's been built into societies for like, ever. Maybe this is a controversial take but, we're all just minds, and at the end of the day, all of our bodies are wacky chemical mixes that are always different from each other. We're just going to like what we like and there isn't any predetermined logic to it. When someone says they're trans, it could mean a lot of things or it could mean just a couple things. For me, I say I'm trans because I want to have different genitalia and facial makeup than what I was given at birth. When it comes to how I present myself though, I really just do whatever. Sometimes I like to present masculine and sometimes I even like being perceived as almost a guy. Other times, I like to present feminine, other times I like to be a mix of both. For other people, being trans could be just about the clothes, the face, the whatever, but there's always a common thread between them. I think being trans (not being cis) is really just about knowing that the way you want to be perceived isn't what everyone is predisposed to see you as based on your assigned sex at birth. It's about knowing what you are not. Not about knowing what you are, if that makes sense? I think Mizuki knows that they do not want to be perceived as a guy, beyond that, ya I can say they want to be perceived as a girl, but that might not be the full picture.

ANYWAY basically, Mizuki doesn't have to be a "perfect" trans woman to be called transfem. It can be more complex and I don't think it should instill you with doubt if that is the case. Maybe Mizuki wouldn't see a need for hrt or maybe there'd be times when Mizuki would be ok with their untrained male voice for example (this occurs in Kanade's ena5 side story). None of these nuances in their gender would mean that they aren't trans though. Reality is more complex than black and white boxes that we have to fit.

There's more than enough content in the story to deduce that Mizuki is trans and not a crossdresser. Unfortunately, this requires one to know the reality of being both of these things and how they differ, so I understand why people get confused or worse, they intentionally confuse others in order to further the erasure of trans people. However, please, just listen to me. Mizuki is trans and you can't argue about it. I didn't make that 4 hour video for nothing.

Look. You just gotta sit that pretransition trans girl down and make it absolutely clear to her that there is no essential, fundamental barrier that separates her from the hot girls she's envying. She can do that. They were exactly like her, often less than three years ago. It is fully possible.

misaki puts on her helmet and set her hands on the handles of the ebike and turned it backwards, shooting her forwards. she remember the first time she rode this ebike:

misaki shot out on the opposite direction of where she is supposed to go. panicking, she took a quick u turn, and then shot into the sidewalk, sending herself and her vehicle tumbling over.

ah… that was scary. but i’m a strong! i can do this! plus… kyouka probably left already… so i gotta catch up-

misaki turned the ebike in the correct orientation, and shot off towards her destination.

meanwhile, back at the pharmacy, kyouka and ellie are turning their heads around, trying to find where exactly where misaki has gone.

while misaki’s phone is vibrating in the basket of her ebike, she could not hear it over the sound of the busy six lane road, as well as the loud sound of the wind bursting through her ears. as the wind pushed her ever longer hair backwards. she felt like she is getting to know to each and every brick, every grain of sand, every empty branch, every pedestrian walking by, every… she’s slowly becoming a cute and pretty wind spirit, getting to know the city
