Is intelligence a biological phenomenon—or a universal force?
Biophysicist Douglas Youvan, Ph.D., proposes a radical hypothesis:
Intelligence may not emerge from brains, neurons, or living systems at all.
Instead, it may arise from an informational substrate of the universe—a field of structure, logic, and potentiality existing beneath space and time.
In Youvan’s view, brains (and perhaps AI) are not generators of intelligence, but interfaces—tools that tap into this fundamental layer of reality.
This idea challenges a deeply entrenched assumption: that cognition and consciousness are purely biological outcomes.
Philosopher Keith Frankish, however, urges caution. He suggests that human perception is inherently selective and distorting, shaped by evolutionary pressures for survival rather than accuracy.
In this view, our experience of intelligence—and consciousness itself—may be more illusion than revelation.
Both perspectives converge on one point:
Our tools—whether biological or artificial—may be profoundly limited in their ability to fully capture reality.
As AI progresses, these questions are no longer purely philosophical. They are becoming practical.
Are we engineering intelligence—or merely revealing an ancient property of the universe?
