All good things....

So the silver birthday is finally here. I turn 25 today. It’s a funny feeling, knowing that young adulthood is now in the rear view mirror and that I am now firmly in the rear view mirror.

Of course, age is nothing but a number. But for me, it is significant as a marker of my own personal development- where I have been and where I am going. For the longest time now, I have been aware that the a change is on the horizon. The last 7 years have been a rocky road of personal development for me and I have grown a great deal- especially in comparison to when I joined Tumblr in 2012. I have made great friends, done exciting things, had my first relationship and my first heartbreak. Like I said- a lot has happened.

But I can recognise that as I enter the second half of those twenties I know that these times are coming to and end. Friends are getting engaged, parents and grandparents are getting older, and even the interests that have defined my life so far are beginning to fade.

I have spent the last 12 years of my life loving Doctor Who and it’s expanded universe. I have been enjoying listenong to Big Finish’s latest adventures for the Eighth Doctor. Last month the latest series returned with a run of great episodes that I thought we wouldn’t see again, and Peter Capaldi once again has shown how good he is in the role. Best of all, a few weeks ago I stood in the control room of the actual TARDIS at the BBC studios during a trip to the Doctor Who experience. It doesn’t get better than this- and that’s why I feel it is time to move on at the end of this series when Peter Capaldi hands over the keys to the TARDIS. I came to this conclusion when I realised that- as much as I like the show I did not miss it last year during its hiatus. And it was further underlined to me that when Peter Capaldi announced his departure, it meant that I could too, leave the show as one era comes to the end and another begins.  I am sure the next Doctor will be brilliant- and i am sure i’ll come across the show again in years to come- but I am content with the 12 years watching the Doctor’s adventures as a fan. Now it’s time to focus on my adventures.

I found the same is true of my interest in Gundam too. Following the spectacular series that was Iron Blooded Orphans, I feel happy to have that as my last full length Gundam series. I’ll still watch Thunderbolt and the next episode of The Origin but beyond that, I don’t feel a burning desire to continue watching the next series. As for Gundam Models, I still love the hobby- but rather than continuing to follow it I ought to continue my  plan to complete the ones i have and bring them up to standard. I may end up selling many of them- that’s why I want to do them well. I have developed so mug in my skills over last 12 years and whilst I am not perfect I am proud of the models that have turned out well.

In many ways this has happened naturally across all my interests! Assassin’s Creed is no longer what it used to be despite my enjoyment of Syndicate, and although Mass Effect Andromeda is a great game after 5 years away it is unlikely to recapture what u loved about the original Mass Effect series. I remain interested in sci-fi TV shows, films and games but I no longer feel the need to absorb them as i once did- I feel the real world needs my focus far more.

So what does this mean for my Tumblr? Well I have barely posted here anyway in the last 2 years due to being locked out except on my phone.  But I know feel like now is as good a time as any to call time on my little corner of the Internet.  I originally created Tumblr as a way of sharing an interest with a girl I had an ill advised crush on but I quickly discovered it was a hub of people with the same interests as me. It was good for a time, but I soon found the vitriol in debates over Doctor Who and other fandoms too much to continue following. Even so there remain some great communities on this site and in the last 5 years that I have been on here I have interacted with some very cool and creative people.

So I would like to thank all of those who I have talked to or who have followed me over the past 5 years. It was great to have people reblog my posts or to comment on the posts of others and help feed into my own and other people’s interests.

This Tumblr will remain online as a monument of sorts to this 5 year period of my life- but this will be my last post. It’s the end, but the moment has been prepared for!

So, this was basically the best birthday present I’ve ever gotten. You heard it, guys. THE DOCTOR said he remembers me from the Academy. It’s canon. I’m a Time Lady. You may now address me as The Author.

Seriously, though, my amazing friends Petra and Connor dreamed this up and (with the help of Petra’s SO), seized the opportunity, and this makes me feel so super loved. Also, Peter Capaldi took time out of his day to wish this Whovian a happy birthday, and it means so, so much to me. I cannot even express the joy I feel when I watch this. This is truly, truly magical.

(And yes, my middle name IS really Gallifrey.)
