"i am sorry for stepping on your foot, but i can't see!" it was getting colder and she was definitely getting tired and grumpy. "can we go back yet? we haven't seen anything since before the sun went down and there's nothing that important out here that we can't do where it's not like twenty-three degrees."

of course she was complaining it was cold now but the second it snowed, she was outside in it, running around usually with rj and some of the younger kids. "okay but... can we actually go inside? not like i can fire a gun with frozen fingers."

all you did was fail her. the words echoed in her head over and over as she tried to calm herself down. at least until she felt her mom pull her close, holding onto her. judith felt herself start to calm down, even if it was only slightly. "h-hannah... hannah's... dead and i couldn't..." she was panicking again, she couldn't stop it this time. "i couldn't save her. i tried, mama i tried so hard." when she finally managed to say it out loud, she felt the weight settle over her. there was also the injuries she sustained that needed to be properly taken care of. an old shirt haphazardly tied around her thigh and a piece of gauze from her neck to her chest that was soaked through already.

"he killed her and i just... i lost it. but i tried mama, you believe me right?"

part of her had known that a day like this might come... or would come. she'd seen it with carl, seen the way that the world had changed him, had been there when the inevitable had happened and he'd killed someone for the first time. the only difference now was that lori was more... well, she was more prepared. perhaps prepared wasn't the right word, but it was different now from how it had been the first time around. lori knew what this world was now. she knew what happened, wasn't as naive as she had been at the start.

as soon as judith started speaking, started seeming panicked, lori moved to pull her close to him, arms wrapping around her but not too tightly. she didn't want to suffocate her, she just wanted to offer comfort.
