AGAINST THE BEST, RAIDERS' RANKIN ON TOP
By Andy Mendlowitz
January 17, 1999
Stonewall Jackson wrestling coach Bill Cameron played the role of promoter in yesterday's Viking Wrestling Team Tournament at Woodbridge High School. He suggested to Brooke Point Coach Mike Smoot that the Black-Hawks' Tim Foley move up to 152 pounds and wrestle the Raiders' Jeremy Rankin to create a battle of undefeated wrestlers. "I talked to Coach Cameron and he brought the idea up," Smoot said. I said Yeah, let's do that.' I figured it's time for both of them to have a little bit of a challenge. You wind up seeing good wrestlers once you get to the states, anyway." Rankin's strength and size played a major factor as he threw Foley in the first period for a 5-0 lead and then scored a pin in the second period. The tournament featured nine teams wrestling five dual matches apiece; three extra matches for each team were canceled because of inclement weather Friday. The day had six area teams with several of the Prince William area's ranked wrestlers squaring off, including the match between Rankin (16-0, No. 1 at 152 pounds) and Foley (15-1, No. 1 at 145). {Some matches ended too late to be included in Sunday's Prince William Extra.} "I think Jeremy was just way too strong," Cameron said. "Jeremy's tough. If you start to brawl with him, you're going to get whaled. Foley's a good wrestler; it's just hard to mix it up with Jeremy." Rankin's win helped the Raiders to a 40-33 team victory, avenging an earlier dual meet defeat to Brooke Point. Rankin said he welcomed the individual challenge, as did Foley. "Before today, I haven't been scored on, so I needed some tough matches," said Foley, who defeated No. 3 145-pounder John Spittle of Brentsville, 11-4. "I needed to wrestle some good guys like that." In Stonewall Jackson's 46-12 win over Osbourn Park, there were two matches among ranked opponents. At 171, Stonewall Jackson's Ryan Bishop -- who is the area's top-ranked 160-pounder but has wrestled most of his matches this season at 171 -- defeated No. 2 Ryan Vanover, 7-2, off of three takedowns and an escape. Stonewall Jackson's top-ranked 112-pounder, Donnie Pereira, defeated No. 2 Bruce Ross, 3-1, via a second-period escape and takedown. David Basham of Brentsville, the area's top-ranked 171-pounder, moved up to 189 and pinned No. 3 Steve Stanley of Brooke Point in 50 seconds, but Brooke-Point won, 34-26. Woodbridge, led by first-year coach and former Gar-Field assistant Anthony McDuffie, handed the Indians their first loss of the season with a 28-27 win, after trailing 18-0. The Vikings won four of the last five matches, starting with Brandon Miller -- who has the flu -- taking a 9-5 decision over Wayne Harshbarger. Ed Morales and Rick Thomas followed with pins, and Stuart McCray won, 7-2. At heavyweight, Gar-Field's third-ranked Robert Harding won methodically over top-ranked David McKeown, 4-3. A key match was at 135 pounds, where Woodbridge freshman Daniel Racioppa lost, 4-0, to senior Barry Brewton, but he avoided getting pinned and saved his team three points. When the two had met earlier this year, Brewton won with a pin. "That's what really won the match. You could do the math yourself," said McDuffie, whose team overcame a 39-point deficit to beat Western Branch, 40-39, earlier this season. "We don't panic when we get behind. Sometimes we get on a roll at the end." CAPTION: Woodbridge's Stuart McCray wrestles Gar-Field's Eddie Canyon during the 215-pound match. Your First Luxury Timepiece
A baby’s first steps, a boy’s first crush… a man’s first serious watch. Okay, so one of these is not like the others, but your first luxury timepiece is still a big deal. It’s likely the first wearable object you’ll spend far too much on; get it right and it won’t be the last.
The question is, with so many out there – in more shapes and sizes than any sane person should know about (trust me, I’m borderline) – what should your first watch actually be?
Well, unless you have more money than you know what to do with, you’re probably looking at entry-level models. Don’t worry, that doesn’t mean “cheap”. It’s an airy-fairy term but it generally means the price at which a watch can be considered luxury (the type of watch that will need regular servicing).

Your Budget: Around The £4-5k Mark
It changes year on year as prices slowly get hiked, but at the moment you’re looking around the £4-5k mark for a decent entry-level timepiece. Think of your Omegas, IWCs and Breitlings – the kind of long-term investment watches that get admiring glances without breaking the bank. Generally, these are the type of brands that can afford to mass-produce high-quality mechanical watches.

What About Rolex?
The one name I didn’t mention there is Rolex. The king of watch brands does fit the bill of course, but there’s a downside: everyone gets a Rolex. It’s become, excuse my French, passé. That’s not to say they’re bad watches, far from it; Rolex have rightly earned their crown. But your first watch says something about you – and you don’t want it to tell everyone you’re a status-obsessed conformist.
However, you do want a name that people will recognise, as having to explain your watch constantly can become painful. You can trust me on that, I’m a bit of a horological hipster when it comes to my own watches – except for one. I’ll get to that later.

At the same time, you do want something with longevity. You have to assume the watch is going to last you for a few decades, if not attain heirloom status. Therefore, you consider the designs that have already stood the test of time: the Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso, the Panerai Radiomir, the Cartier Tank or the TAG Heuer Carrera, for example.
Should You Go Vintage?
You might wonder why I’m not suggesting vintage at this point. You do typically get better value for money, and often for cooler watches. But the reality is that you need to know what you’re doing. Some dealers will rip you off, some will give you a good deal; knowing the difference between the two comes only from experience. I’d suggest buying vintage should be left for your second watch.
My Personal Choice
omega-speedmaster
Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional
Bringing it all together, what was the first entry-level watch I bought myself? Bear in mind that I’m not saying you should also buy this, just that it fit the bill for me at the time. It still does in fact. If I say that it went to the moon, you can guess already: the Omega Speedmaster.
A design that can be called iconic without hyperbole, a classic movement and a recognisable brand name, it ticks all the boxes for a first luxury watch. It might not be what you’d choose, but I still love it and will probably continue to. Most importantly, if that’s how you end up feeling about your first watch, you know you’ve chosen right.

this is a controversial opinion on this site apparently but ace/aro/bi/pan/nonbinary/queer people’s identities should not be boiled down to simply “discourse” because we’re people and it’s really fucking disrespectful of this entire site as a collective to have decided that this is the norm
