Contraband Review:
Mark Wahlberg has come a long way in his career, last year he stunned us in The Fighter, and he wowed us with his performance in The Departed, but this year we have Contraband, a flawed and overly familiar piece of work. Contraband tells the story of a man under fire, his family is being threatened by criminals, and its up to him to save his family. The biggest issue with the film is that you saw it before, the matter in which he goes about saving his family has changed, but the plot still remains predictable. The idea of a man saving his family is still a enjoyable one, but it needs something fresh and unique to make it stand out. Merely throwing in central villain and a twist that you can see coming right of the back didnt do Contraband any justice. I sat there in the theater, not engaged in the characters, but rather counting down the moments till the film ended. Mark Wahlbergs performance was subpar; he merely cursed when he was mad, and overacted when a scene needed to be lighthearted. Although him and Kate Beckinsale had to deal with the poor dialogue, they still could have done more with their characters, because in retrospect they just came off as bad parents. With a lot of movies you have to make sure that youre rooting for the right people, in Contraband I wasnt sure who to root for, the main characters were all criminals and the mere idea of them getting away with a major crime almost promotes their actions. The movie just wasnt entertaining, which is something that all films should have, the action wasnt exciting, the performances were bland, and the plot was overly predictable. Im not going to call Contraband a bad movie, but I will say that its a movie that lacked originality and was chore to watch. I wouldnt recommend seeing this movie solely because youve already seen it before, but in all honesty you probably saw a better version.
one out of four stars.

The Movie pick for this week is Contraband. The film stars Mark Wahlberg and reviews for the film have been positive. Hopefully this golden globe nominated actor will give a strong performance, rather than give us another "The Happening" affair.

The Devil Inside Review:
Found Footage movies are a mixed bag, most of the time you know the ending from the trailer, or more often you see too much in trailer which makes the movie a bore fest. Lately these low-budget films have been doing a lot better as far as financial intake, with numerous films reaching the blockbuster mark over the course of their run. Paranormal Activity 3 was a critical and financial success, with critics stating that the film returns to its roots with great results. The reason why I say all this is because, Paranormal Activity 3 was legitimately scary, and it used spare footage for the trailers, leaving the audience unable to predict what was going to happen next. This feeling of fear and excitement never came about during my viewing of “The Devil Inside”.
The films plot was flat out preposterous, the trailer showed all the frightening moments, and the scariest part of the whole film was the black couple fighting behind me. The story tells of a young woman whose mother brutally killed three people during an unauthorized exorcism. The main character then travels to Rome in order to uncover the truth behind her mother’s actions. The story had a interesting premise that could have been emotionally engaging and interesting, as far as seeing the story of a daughter trying to help her mother, yet in the end it’s the classic found footage film. The first half could be sited as the most predicable piece of work of the year. Girl meets priests, priest show girl exorcisms, camera guy talks about his feelings (more annoying than you may think), main character wants priests (supposedly professionals) to perform a exorcism on her mother. The movie stops in its tracks at that point, because the mom is only in the movie for that one scene.
The possibilities of having the story surround this mother and daughter are left out to dry in order to build up unnecessary side plots, and never truly delve into what the hell is going on. The demon acts much like a rabbit; it hops from body to body with ease, making you wonder why it didn’t just leave the moms body after being in an asylum for eighteen years. The story never really picks up; most of the sequences that would have been scary were ruined by an all too informative trailer, perhaps this is because the movie is too short. The films run time was actually so short that they had to make the credits go slower to fit the appropriate window. That’s pretty pathetic considering there is so much more that they could have done with the plot. The acting is god awful with characters merely saying their lines without any feeling nor emotion, it literally brought me joy to see one of the worst actors in the film get taken out, making me hope that the film would take off after that point. In short it didn’t. The final exorcism scene is flat out anti climatic, and the ending is a prime example of lazy filmmaking and poor scripting. The scene literally made me hate myself for dragging my friends (and girlfriend) to see such a flat out boring and predictable gore fest. Speaking of the gore, it was overused, it was as if the filmmakers wanted to scare you at how poorly done the makeup was.
The effects were cheesy and the biggest flaw with the movie was that we never saw anything. Although there have been plenty of found footage films that didn’t show what was after the main characters, in a movie about the supernatural something could of and should have been show to the viewer. To be honest it felt more like people were just going crazy. In the end, the story was awful, the moments shown in the trailer ruined the movie, and the ending made “The Devil Inside” one of the worst movies that I have ever seen. You owe it to yourself not to see this movie.
One out of Four.
