“No killing. Just seriously maim or injure,” he joked with a laugh. It was hard not to let any sort of smirk taint his smile as they shook hands. Jackson surely couldn’t be blamed when Danielle was the one who made her own choices and struck a deal with the devil. Passing her the bag, he shrugged and casually waited until they were both eating to mention what he had in mind. “So.. say I wanted to do a prank to start the summer off. Are you game to help me with that?”. 

“Well that’s fair, go big or go home, right?” Danielle laughed, playing along even though she wasn’t 100% sure his ideas wouldn’t injure anyone. Taking the bag she popped it open and took out a chip, popping it into her mouth she held it back out towards him, silently offering him a chip. “Hmmm” she murmured, thinking for a moment, “What kind of prank is it?” Dani asked, genuinely curious.

Thinking over his proposition for a moment she shrugged, “I think it sounds fun...and a little sketchy. Why can’t we bring flashlights?” Danielle asked, hoping that he would possibly consider the idea. 

“Listen….hear me out….you, me, maybe a few other counselors on a night hike? No flashlights or anything, just the stars and the moon above us. What do you think?”

“i’d be scared too, i’m glad that i just have to supervise them and not climb walls with them,” she feigns a look of horror. “the idea of pushing back from the wall is a bit TERRIFYING if i do say so myself. i mean, sure you have the harness and all, but what if that broke or what if your hand did slip and then the kid went down?”

Listening to the concerns of her friend, Danielle couldn’t help but let out a small laugh, “It’s really not that scary! Nothing is going to happen, I check everything multiple times to be sure everything is working properly before I let anyone climb...and even if my hand slipped, they would fall a few inches...a foot at the most, they would be just fine. You should come climb sometime, it would be fun, I promise.”

theo beamed at her, pretending to stamp their joined pinkies. the gesture was so innocent, so childlike, that it was comforting. “ there we go. i don’t doubt that you will, expert climber. ” he winked at her, adding jokingly, “ if we don’t find some free time, we’d be breaking the most sacred oath of all. ” laughing along with her, he released her pinkie from his to double over for a moment. “ that sounds like the perfect idea. what would we call it ?? camp only the best, only for big kids ?? ”

As soon as he winked Danielle felt her cheeks grow slightly warmer, and her smile grew even wider somehow. “I’m not sure I’d say expert,” she said with a small shrug, “That’s true and we absolutely cannot have that. No one can break a pinkie promise. Do you trust me not to let you fall?” Danielle asked, eyebrows raised. His name for the camp is was in the end, what really got her. She hadn’t laughed this hard in a while, it was nice and much needed in her life at the moment. “I think that has a nice ring to it! The real question is, who would be in charge of running all the activities and such at this camp? It can’t be the big kids...so would the littles do it? Or the elderly?”

Jackson’s eyes narrowed as he studied Danielle’s face, wondering if her word was trustworthy. It didn’t seem like she would take the bait and give him an I.O.U with no limits, and he had far too many pranks and trouble to get into this summer to not take her offer. Humming to himself, he reached a hand out for a shake again. “…Deal. But you better be lenient when it comes to deciding cause these chips are precious!”. 

With a grin Danielle shook his hand, “Deal. I promise to be lenient. As long as it’s nothing that will get me killed- or anyone else- I am likely to agree to whatever it is that you come up with.” The thoughts of what he may actually come up with scared her a little, but she was trying to be more daring this summer anyways, so this was a good opportunity. “Now, hand over the chips...they are my favorite kind.”

“Yeah they’re both pretty awesome.” Cosette said nodding her head in agreement with Danielle laughing softly smiling widely at her friend. “And of course you will probably the easiest to teach and for sure the most fun.”

“I wouldn’t be so sure. I mean, I know how to surf? So I know I have balance...but, other than that? I’ve never even attempted anything on wheels.” Danielle admitted, shaking her head a little. “Honestly though, I think that Alex might be the easiest to teach.”

SHE HUMMED. “ mm– yeah, mostly good. ” ‘ you know – aside from an asshole making her heart break and causing a lot of unresolved anger ’ she wanted to add ; but decided against it at the last second. “ my favourite is probably the time I had a midnight fire with the campers and a few had gone to bed, ” layla began , a smile grew causing a dimple to form on her right cheek. “ and this one kid was telling the rest of us about the time he had gotten chased by the tiniest dog and he ended up rolling down a ditch … poor thing .. it was super funny. ” she let out a laugh. “ what about you – what’s a good memory of yours? ”

Listening to her friends careful words, Danielle smiled, it was so easy to talk to the other girl and the time spent by the water reminded her of being a camper herself. “Oh poor kid!” She couldn’t help but laugh along with the story though, it must have been a sight to see. “That sounds like a good night though. A good memory of mine?” Thinking for a moment she smiled, able to think of quite a few specific moments but unable to pick just one. “I’m not sure if I can pick just one good memory. There are so many to choose from. Maybe the very first summer I worked here, when this little girl- I mean the tiniest and youngest kid here, she climbed to the very top and she was too scared to come down and it was the first time I ever had to convince someone to trust me like that...and by the end of the summer she was practically a pro. That’s one of my favorites for sure.”

“Alex and Theo so far.” Cosette replied confidently because those were the two that stuck out so far. “Though Theo is mostly because of our competitive nature and wanting to challenge each other to battles. Alex just wants to learn to skate really.”

Danielle’s face lit up at the names mentioned, “Oh cool! Two of my favorite people here. That should be fun. They are both really fun guys to hang out with...but I have to say, teaching me should be the most fun,” she joked

“ alright, everyone make sure & drop your tray with rey, the dishwasher just over there & then get in a nice line for me by the back door ! ” she politely requested of her campers as she gave a straightened finger to the place of meeting as she gathered her own belongings & slung her rosy backpack over both shoulders. “ who’s ready for a nature hike ? i know you are carter, we’ll make sure no big bad thorns get you in the knees this time ! ” she brushed her fingertips in a reassuring matter with a pat on the smaller boy’s head, as she continued to watch him pass then caught eye of the one person she’s been avoiding since that night. the same night she single-handedly placed both milo & her’s stillwater camp career on the line for a foolish, head over heels mistake. for clarification’s sake, she had no ill-hatred toward the brunette who was getting closer to where adelina stood. it was the simple trait of embarrassment that the wall-climbing instructor had witnessed the pair, meaning adelina & the now, fired counselor on a late night rendezvous in the moonlit lake, with a lack of clothing to be put briefly. dropping her obvious glance on the female, she turned her head to bring her arms to guide the campers & give fist bumps here & there.

There was only one hour that Danielle had to get food, gather new supplies, and get ready for the next round of campers and she had planned to make the most of it. Gathering her lunch onto a plastic tray she smiled and chatted politely with the kids surrounding her, making jokes and mostly just trying to keep them all in good spirits. Turning with the tray her eyes were drawn to Adelina who was directing her campers, a blush raised in her cheeks and she diverted her eyes immediately. The night that Danielle had seen Adelina and the other councilor she had just been on a walk, she was trying to find a good place to watch the stars and as soon as she saw them in the lake she comepletly froze, unsure of what to do as she had made eye contact with the other girl. All she could do was turn around and walk away from the scene as fast as possible. It was a night that she wished she could go back and tell herself to not go out that night. From that night forward she had done her absolute best to hide from the councilor that she was now having to pass in order to go back to the climbing station. She hated feeling the need to avoid the other girl, it made her feel guilty, but she was also sure if she went over to talk to her she would die of embarrassment. Planning her route she tried to just slide behind the other girl and then out the door, but, of course, that didn’t work as a kid ran up to her to give her a hug and it nearly caused her to loose her balance. This caused her to bump into Adelina, “Oh- I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to! I just,” she rambled, gesturing to the kid that was now wrapped around her with a small smile. “Are you okay?”

She couldn’t help the light blush on her cheeks and the smile that found itself on her lips, “You’re probably right, maybe I should be on best of behavior this summer...ya’ know, I can be a good girl if I need to be.” Pushing her hair back behind her ears she glanced around them, taking in their surrounds before settling her gaze back on the boy across from her. “Will we? I am confident in my ability to show you a good time, Milo.”

“ i know i can; and even better, i know you can’t break a pinky promise. ” theo offered her his pinky, enjoying how familiar and comforting this was. “ hmm, how about this weekend ?? i think i can set aside a few hours. ” struggling to maintain his composure, he nodded too. “ we agree on the important things. the clearly better group needs room to shine. us big kids need our own thing. ” 

Danielle grinned, linking her pinky with his. It was childish, but he was right, she would never break a pinky promise. “I pinky promise to show you a good time.” Nodding her head she thought about what would be happening this weekend, “That sounds good, I’m sure we can find some free time.” At this point Dani couldn’t help but let out a small giggle, she quickly reached up to cover her laugh with her hand, “We really do. We should all come together and start a summer camp for only the big kids.”

“New experiences for sure.” Cosette said shrugging her shoulders. “You know me, I’m never one to back down from a challenge. I promised to show a couple other fellow counselors besides you how to skate already.”

“Oh yeah? Are you excited to not only have to teach kids, but now a bunch of adults too?” Danielle asked, smiling at the thought. “Who are you planning to teach?”

WHILE LAYLA LISTENED TO her friend talk , she couldn’t help the wide smile on her face. she could truly listen to people talk for hours. “ i think the memories. ” layla glanced around them quickly , still beaming. “ not just my own , but everyone’s you know? this place has been up for how many years .. i just think it’s really cool to think about people’s experiences here. what they learned, what they taught and regretted – if that makes any sense? ”

As she listened she couldn’t help but admire the other girl, she was kind and  beautiful, Danielle was lucky to have her as a friend. “It does. You’re right, it is very interesting to think about those things. Do you have good memories of camp, mostly?”

“Yeah I’ve always known that we were pretty even on the amount times we get hurt during the summer or in general.” Cosette said shrugging her shoulders not really caring to admit that since that was pretty true. “So what are you looking forward to this summer?”

“It’s actually kind of ridiculous how often we end up hurt somehow. We must be tied for the most visits to the nurses cabin.” Thinking over the question she shrugged, “Honestly I’m just happy to be here, I’m pretty content at the moment. What about you?”

Hmm probably @ofalifeguard, she is easy to talk to and honestly, if I’m behind bars it must be because of trespassing while on an adventure which means she would be there anyways.
