Summer In Wayhaven | Bonus Prompt | Fireflies
Tumblr media
here come real stars to fill the upper skies, and here on earth come emulating flies, that though they never equal stars in size, (and they were never really stars at heart), achieve at times a very star-like start. only, of course, they can’t sustain the part ~ robert frost
Thank you @artistpolly for this gorgeous, enchanting art of Nate and Suri
Dedicated to all the fireflies on all the summer nights this year

You're like the only thing I see
Pairing: Nate x Fem!Detective Summary: a long-awaited vacation falls into their lap, and a chance to be alone must never be wasted, so off to the Big City they go Prompt: Vacation! Day 5 of @summerinwayhaven prompt list :] Tags: lovers being in love, fluff, lowkey just them being saps Disclaimers: hints of suggestiveness, one kiss, lots of handholding Word Count: 1477 A/N: soo I fell a few days behind.. #awkward.. anyways I immediately imagined Nate taking Cherry on vacation so here we are <3
˖⁺‧₊˚♡˚₊‧⁺˖ Rarely did she ever venture into the Big City, with bustling people, lines of traffic, tall buildings, never stopping for nothing.
Cherise stared out the car window, the shops lined along the strip, the crowds walking about, the glaring sun overhead. The constant noise that didn’t end even during nightfall.
The last time she really stayed here was right before college, a trip for partying, shopping and sleeping in. With a few select friends that parted after it was over, went their separate ways, kept in touch.
It brought a touch of a smile to her lips.
Her thoughts were interrupted when a hand interlaced with hers, warm and encompassing. She looked up, expression brightening at the sight of him.
His brown eyes were swimming in affection for her, and her contrast grey was staring back with just as much awe.
His skin was sun-kissed, a remarkable shade of brown with an ashy undertone to it, tawny in all its glory. A tint of color traced his face from the heat, a beautiful mixture that was purely him, he was an artist’s dream come to life.
Her skin was still fairly pale, a flush to her features, thankfully no burns. Her freckles stood out more after spending too long in the beam of the sun. She had taken care to look like a vision on this getaway.
A little stubble showed that he hadn’t shaved, some of his hair tied back in a bun, while some sleek dark strands kissed the back of his neck. She longed to brush it aside and brush her lips against him, showing him the real thing.
He still dressed for comfort- now in a lighter way, in the heat of summer. The sun drenched the vehicle in light, but the air conditioning kept it cool.
Amusement flared when she saw how cramped it was for him- the one disadvantage of being so tall.
She was fit in a flowy dress, sheer and chiffon, while he was in a shirt of silk, shorts of resembling high quality.
It was a rare occasion they got time alone, and this was one of those times.
For now, they just planned to settle into their hotel- no other plans for the day, short of maybe going out for dinner, seeing as the sun was already near setting.
While the city tended to be intense, getting out of Wayhaven, even if for a short time, was a breath of fresh air.
Nate seemed to share the sentiment, a weight lifted off his shoulders, not a muscle of his frame tense.
Soon enough, the vehicle made its stop, in front of the looming hotel, glass windows reflecting the sun, the ornate decoration already seen outside, showcasing a grand entrance.
It was nothing short of perfect.
Nate always went all out, not a single stop spared.
She had a feeling he was incapable of anything less.
Before Cherise knew it, her door was opened, and a familiar hand reached out to take hers, a smile graced her lips before placing her hand in his, the gentle grasp guiding her out.
Of course he’d slipped out before she took notice, only to open the car door before she had the chance, and lead the way out. Ever the gentleman.
Smoothing down her dress, she noticed their bags were already being handled.
His hand never left hers, their fingers intertwined.
“Has it lived up to your imagination?”
“That and more.”
Soft laughter was shared between them, a look in their eyes only they shared.
Before the heat embraced them, they decided it was best to make their way inside.
Check in was simple, and their luggage was already on its way up to their room, so a visit to the indoor restaurant seemed only fitting.
Not a care in the world was found as they wandered, taking the time to laze as they pretended to look for it.
She had to imagine they looked like quite the pair, with all the stares they garnered.
“Does it ever bother you?”
“Hm?”
“All the attention you garner.”
“I think you flatter me.” He leaned in closer, the brown of his eyes standing out.
“I think all the looks we’re getting say otherwise,” she gestured with a subtle tip of her head.
With a fleeting glance around, his gaze returned to her. “I think it would be rather impossible not to be captured by you.”
Her eyebrow raised a little, a little shake to her head as she fought the smile that wanted to break out.
“You’re impossible, Agent Sewell.”
“I’d say you have me figured out perfectly, Agent Olsen.”
While there was an agreement to not bring up work, flirtation didn’t really count in her books. It seemed it was the same for him.
In the end, their drifting ceased and they were seated in the restaurant, the lighting was warm as the sun settled under the depths, and darkness slowly started creeping in.
After flipping through the menu, they each chose a dish that sounded appetizing- and without a second thought, Nate splurged on an expensive bottle of wine.
Cherise stared out the window pane, the outlook of a beautiful view, the far water glimmering and flourishing with waves.
Gently caressing her knuckles, a sweeping back and forth motion, Nate instantly grabbed her attention, bringing it back to him effortlessly.
“You look happy,” he murmured.
“That’s because I am,” she hummed in response.
They sat across from one another, legs brushing under the table, hands entangled on the cool surface.
Like no space between them was tolerable.
The conversation was light, flowing easily. As always, he wanted to hear more about her, while he divulged little things about himself, at her insistence.
There was no rush, nothing to call them away, as they sat at that table, everything and nothing racing by with a blur, all else background noise.
The wine didn’t help the heat that rises on her skin, the color that crawls up and settles on her complexion. While his was a little more subtle, hers was on full display.
Once the dishes of food arrive after a short wait, it doesn’t take long for them to start.
In a way, Nate seems a little more human with how he can still enjoy food. It’s something she’s sure she’ll never get over.
Soon the plates were clear, the bottle of wine was as good as empty, and she was sated and fulfilled.
There was no chance to protest about him paying- as he side-stepped her every attempt to contribute. In his very own words, he was treating her.
A long-deserved vacation.
And in no way did that mean she could give anything in return, at least in compensation. Though sweet intentions, she would find a way.
On their way out, side by side, they strolled about the building.
The sound of music caught his attention, lighting up his features.
“Come with me,” was all he proposed, like it was a surprise.
Without hesitation, she followed his lead, hand in hand.
The short distance revealed a beautiful room, a stage where a live band played and where couples danced, music overtaking the space.
Looking his way, there was a note of reluctance in her voice. “Nate-”
The look he gave her was irresistible, melting any resolve that was once in her grasp.
It seemed he wouldn’t take no for an answer, and who was she to deny him when the dance floor was calling his name?
The music carried them to the middle of the floor, their footsteps acting as if they had a mind of their own.
Her arms found the way over his shoulders, one hand caressing the hair at his nape.
She tilted back to look up at him, so many things unsaid and feelings alive with a certain electricity, sparking with a will that would never burn out.
He was a romantic at heart, and it spoke to hers in kind.
She had a feeling the rest of their days spent here would be lounging, swimming, days in bed, room service, and exploring the city for all it had to offer.
Cherise couldn’t wait to do it all and more with him.
A soft hum could be heard as the melody got stuck in her head.
“I love you.”
His forehead gently bumped hers, resting together.
“I love you more.”
The softest and sickly sweetest of kisses was exchanged between them, that held the promise of more. Stealing the breath from her lungs, as he held her tight.
Beyond them, the city lights gleamed so bright you couldn’t see the sky, a world that never died down, so loud you couldn’t hear yourself think at times- but with him, none of that mattered.
Wayhaven could wait. The place that always called her- now them, back home.  ˖⁺‧₊˚♡˚₊‧⁺˖

Summer in Wayhaven: Swimming
I know I'm late on a few of these prompts, I'm doing my best to catch up 🫡
Ao3 Link. @summerinwayhaven
Detective: Evangeline Gage, featuring Bobby Marks (set in college pre-relationship)
“You do swim, don’t you?”
Evangeline turned, standing there on the steps of the pool in the near darkness, tossing the wrap she’d had onto the metal bar handle beside her.
Bobby visibly gulped.
“I swim…” She could hear the unspoken line he wanted to say afterwards; whatever suave ending to that sentence there was he’d thought it up and let it die on his tongue. She smiled as she turned her head away from him and started to wade further into the pool, abandoned this time of night.
“How did you…?”
“I know someone with a copy of the key.” An understatement, perhaps. It was one of the worst-kept secrets in the Greek Life community that the presidents of each society passed down a key to the pool area for quiet, after-hours usage. So long as nobody was hurt and nothing was vandalized, the school turned a blind eye to the tradition—probably because the current Dean of Students was an alumni of one of the fraternities himself. In Evangeline’s case, as a member of her sorority council she had the opportunity to check the key out for personal use.
None of this was information that she would disclose to Bobby Marks, who had never heard of an anonymous source in his two and a half years of forcibly putting the “investigative” adjective to the concept of “student journalism.”
In all honesty, Evangeline wasn’t certain she should be trusting a guy she’d only gone on one-and-a-half dinner dates with with a visit to the pool, but it was warm and she felt like a quiet swim. Summer in the city was romantic and oppressively hot, Evangeline’s poorly maintained student friendly apartment lacked A/C, and the campus security was a joke most of the year but especially during the extended break.
Evangeline was across the pool and halfway back when she heard the flailing. She stopped mid-stroke to stare as Bobby attempted a poor doggy-paddle towards the center, sputtering on water as his pale blond hair got in his eyes.
Pityingly, she swam closer, hovering about a foot away from him as he tried to redirect his paddling in her direction—he only succeeded in turning around in a full circle. “Help!” he gasped, rasping on water that he began coughing on a second later.
“Put your feet down,” Evangeline coaxed, doing her best to sound reassuring and notlike she was about to laugh at his misfortunes. She schooled her expression into something neither of pity nor of mockery.
“Down?”
“You’re in the shallow end.”
“Oh.”
