Today I went to help my mother get her first dose of the Covid vaccine. While I was there a Hispanic man who didn’t know much English came in. All the nurses didn’t know what to do. Though I was there for my mother I volunteered to translate for the man.

I know hospitals are obligated to have a translator phone line but not all Spanish is the same. And frankly those inner phone lines have the worst Spanish for common folk. So while mother was getting shot I stepped away to help the man. The nurse tho...was honestly a disgrace to who ever she had for Spanish teacher. While I stepped over she obnoxiously asked “como dey lamas?” 🤦🏻‍♀️

Anyways,

Everyone was thoroughly grateful for my help (not enough to vaccinate me for it 🙃) but I couldn’t help to keep thinking how ill prepared the nurses were. However, I don’t blame them. They went to nursing school not language school. What I do blame is a country that doesn’t emphasis the importance of knowing more than 1 language and common communication skills. It was honestly so disheartening to see how they kept passing this man on - a man that was probably that was of elderly age that works one of those shitty jobs no one is fighting for- all because not a single person was bilingual in one of the most spoken languages in the entire country.

I’m not a professional translator. In fact sometimes I feel dumb because my Mexican Spanglish isn’t always understood by a different origin speaker. But I helped because this what immigrant children were raised to do. We acted as translators since we could talk. I’m an adult now but this sentiment runs deep.

If you’re fortunate enough to teach, learn, and most importantly help - do it. This man didn’t have anyone to help. He wasn’t fortunate to have a family member there to be his voice. He took over 3 busses to get there. He was over the moon that he was even able to get the vaccine. It shouldn’t have been a lucky coincidence that I was there the same time he needed someone. This country isn’t just an English speaking country.
