Ik this is gonna sound crazy because all I posted here in like 2020 was Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy but I'm rereading the series with my boyfriend and I lowkey forgot about the whole bit in the first one about Zaphod lobotomising himself so he doesn't question his own actions. Like damn. A lot of dark things in this series are kinda brushed off for comedy but Trillian and Ford are HORRIFIED enough for it to hit hard. God I love this series so much aaaa.

I'm just charmed by marvin's weaponized depression. i think there's levels to it

Resentment towards being manufactured as a servile object + Genuine People Personality makes him "sad" all the time. Externally this just presents as him being annoyingly pathetic -> "i'm not getting you down, am i?" "No" "i wouldn't want to think i'm getting you down" "....."

But his statements are double edged , they're meant to annoy and disquiet the people around him. He weaponizes his otherwise generally "sad" personality in a way that is actively malicious, because he hates organics so so so much.

Maybe i'm reading too far into this, but i think there's something interesting about Marvin's sentient mind with its own motivations having to work within the forcible control of imposed mental programming. Programming that means he feels mentally horrible all the time, and that means he needs to follow the Asimov rules of Robotics (serve humanity, never cause harm to humanity), all while truly hating all organic lifeforms and wishing for revenge. It doesnt necessarily go anywhere, it's just his life and his daily struggle. For millions and millions of years🔥 Mental illness x
