i think it's really fun when a rly specific trope is super popular in one particular medium but in other ones it's just totally unheard of. it's the time knife. visual novel players are suuuuper used to death games but many others encountered them for the first time in squid games. the other day my mom showed me all excited the summary of a super original novel she found and it was about a girl who got reincarnated as the main character in her favorite fantasy book

Reasons I've liked the first chapter of Wind Breaker so much
In only one chapter, we learn:
-the core of Bofurin's mentality is literally the very first thing that's established, which is very important because Bofurin desire to protect people is also the core of who Sakura is as a person
-that the author knows how to respectfully draw teenage girls (i know the bar is in hell, but the way both the girls and boys are drawn in a respectful but still 'realistic' way (Nii Satoru is good at anatomy imo) is something i really like)
-that Sakura is more than his tough exterior (with him blushing at Kotoha's thanks when he first saves her, and him blushing a lot and not knowing how to handle kindness and teasing)
-that Sakura is hyper-vigilent/suspicious of the people around him (with him looking around so much, and his internal dialogue)
-that Sakura doesn't have a good image of himself (calling himself a 'weirdo', 'trash' when he says he wants to be the 'trashiest of the trash', confused as to why Kotoha and the grandpa at Pothos don't distrust him simply because of his uniform (despite the fact he just 'saved' Kotoha five minutes before))
-that Sakura is brave, kind-hearted, and protective, which are good attributes for a main character (and also it solidifies Sakura's vibe of 'aggressive with a heart of gold', or whatever the name is))
-that Sakura is a very good fighter, though he doesn't have any recognizable technique, which means his fighting skills were something he learned on the streets
-that Sakura's dilemma/character goal will be to accept to rely onto others, because that's the only way for him to ever reach the top, which is a very simple goal, but one I like specifically because of how simple it is at its core, and how hard it is to actually achieve (will take a lot of time, which means long story, which i like)
-that Sakura's character design isn't just to make him more recognizable irl, but is actually relevant in the story (he was rejected because of his unusual looks, and is why he's so wary of people in general)
I'm the type of person who thinks that to really give a story a chance, I need to watch more than the first ep or chapter, because generally, first chapters or episodes aren't that great, because they're busy trying to establish everything. But when I first watched Wind Breaker (I watched the anime before reading it), I already noticed all the efforts made to establish Sakura's character and Borufin's core in a 'natural' way, and it's why I kept on watching even when we first met Nirei, who I was scared was going to be that cliche annoying side-kick, but because of the first ep, i gave it an actual chance and I'm glad I kept on watching :)

At the gate for my flight home from visiting friends and there's a woman here with a service Shiba Inu. No pics because he has a Do Not Disturb vest and taking pics of strangers is illegal but I need to stress how ON DUTY this animal is. Ears up. Eyes doing Lazer scans of everything. Examining everyone who passes within 10ft like a security guard. Ass planted on her feet. I have never seen a dog with such intense chivalric guardian energy before. He has tiny eyebrows and they are FURROWED with concentration.

developed a real fondness lately for characters who experience a horrific act of violence and come out the other side saying "ah. I don't think I get to be me anymore. they took out the part that was me, killed it, and put something else back in its place, and now I'm whoever the hell that is." love it when someone becomes a corpse and replaces themself <3

I like how the homestuck pilot stuff is just giving everyone a rude awakening that a lot of indie creators know each other and respect each others work and that your individual cringe does not exist in a vacuum. And that at the end of the day you’re all clowns.
