sky--james:
“I’m guessing you’re doing music for your MA?” Skyler had vivid memories of Darren playing the violin and it really was obvious that he would be pursuing that further. He was excited for the other man, just because he saw how excited he was about it. “Honestly, feel free to complain about it if you want. I don’t mind listening. It’s nice to know that your parents are still the same though.” Sky used to treat the Liaos as his parents since they were better than his own. Days and days of spending time with Darren in their apartment, he knew the expectations and felt bad for the other. But then again, he couldn’t say anything because his parents had the best interests for their kid.
“Yeah, music performance. I was specifically looking to study at this university because the teacher I wanted to study with next works here. I still have utmost respect for my previous teacher but I think I’ve kind of outgrown her--and I think so does she. So on to newer and better things for me.” He picked up his burger with both hands and took a large bite out of it, appetite as big as ever. “Mm, this is good,” he said, voice muffled over the mouthful of food until he’d swallowed. “Y’know, most people go to bars to drink but I go for the bar food.”

Zane watched as the younger man sat down beside him and then laughed softly at the cautious line of questioning. “I don’t want it because it’s actual meat and not a vegan alternative. Because fuck me, I guess…” he answered with a heavy sigh. He had an hour and a half for lunch and now he’d have to settle for picking up something small on his way back to the vet clinic. “I’m Zane, by the way. Just moved into town, and apparently still looking for a regular spot to eat…”
“Oh. Damn. That sucks. Why not go back and demand another meal?” He grabbed a piece of ‘meat’ and plopped it between his lips, chewed it up, then hummed and nodded until he’d swallowed. “Yep, this tastes like meat,” he confirmed. “I’m Darren. You should try Silver Star. The owner there’s really good. I mean, I haven’t tried their vegan options, but if their other stuff’s anything to go by...” He trailed off as he dug into more of the meal, not seeming to mind at all to have personally benefitted from this man’s misfortune. Then a thought hit him, and he glanced over uncertainly. “Do you want me to buy you a vegan meal? Since you paid for this and all.”

Zane wasn’t the kind of guy who got angry easily or someone who liked to pretentiously hold his dietary choices above other people’s heads. But he always had to bite back the urge to shove his ordered food in the cook’s face when it was clear they ignored the specifics of his order. Instead, he used his fork to stab angrily at his rice bowl as he sulked on the park bench. It was more than obvious to him that the meat in his meal was actual meat, and he scrunched his nose up in disgust at it. Not wanting the food to go to waste, he looked up and caught the gaze of the person passing by.
“Hey, you want this…? It’s still hot, and I promise I didn’t spit in it,” he offered with a gesture of the styrofoam container.
“Uh... yeah!” He swung his bag around and onto the bench before plopping down beside the guy, eagerly taking the container of food. He took a moment to smell it but there didn’t seem to be anything fishy about it--other than the fact that it was freshly made and being offered up just like this. “What’s the catch? Why don’t you want it?” he asked, only sounding half suspicious as he poked at the meat.

maelgaetan:
He looked down his own body, huffing, not sure what to think of his choice of clothing. “I thought we were going out to dance? But you dressed me up like I’m supposed to go on a date with someone.” Maël laughed, unsure whether he was happy with the outfit. “Do you know something I don’t?” The half-French, half-Scottish guy turned towards his pal, lifting an eyebrow at him. “Or do you simply love it when I clean up for a night with you?” The cockiness was clearly audible, followed by a smirk so annoyingly white that on some days the brunette rolled his eyes at himself for it.
“I just don’t want to be with an eye sore all night. So I dressed you up like you actually have some semblence to a sense of fashion--you can think of it as a free Halloween costume if you’d like. You know, since you look nothing like this when you dress yourself,” Darren teased, unphased by the cockiness and instead countering it with his own. Maël didn’t actually look all that bad when he dressed himself, but some of the things he wore... well, they were choices, in Darren’s mind. “If I have to endure two-note, single-chord dance music all night, I want to at least have something pretty to look at.”

sky--james:
Skyler let out a huff but nodded. He tended to joke about it now, the only way he really talks about his situation with his ex. It was a far cry from how he was now. Granted, he isn’t in a relationship so that was a very big change. “I moved here just a little bit after graduation. I have a place to myself, yes. I wanted a change just because I’ve had a roommate for years.” That, and he didn’t really trust living with anyone no matter who they were. “And you? Why did you decide to move?”
“Grad school! I’m a big boy now too,” he said with a grin and a short laugh, much lighter toned and much more like himself now. “Parents finally let me out of the nest... still paying my rent here though. They refuse to let me get a ‘real’ job until I get my master’s, doctorate... whatever else they demand of me. God, I shouldn’t be complaining about this, I know. It’s actually great for me since I get to just practice and play all the time. The impossibly high expectations just sometimes get to my head. You know.”
He knew they came from two completely different walks of life but he also never let himself treat Skyler any differently than he would any of his other friends. He always spoke freely about his relationship with his parents--not that he needed to, considering Sky had spent a lot of time over at his house when they were growing up and could see for himself. Sky had practically been the Liaos’ fourth (yet oldest) kid. Likewise, because of this closeness, Sky probably knew very well how Darren’s parents always were in regards to his grades, achievements, activities outside of school. There were a lot of expectations to be the best. It was a lot of stress at times and it did get to his head a lot as a kid, caused him to thow the occasional tantrum and lock himself in his room, but in the long run, looking back, it was probably all good for him. If he had kids in the future, he’d probably do something similar with them.

cee-trohman:
When the door opened to reveal Darren with a toothbrush in his mouth looking half asleep still Cee couldn’t help laughing. He actually looked rather cute like that. Going inside the closed the door behind him and waited for him to come back. “Hey! Were you enjoying a lay in?” Holding out the box he smiled proudly. “These are new recipes I’ve been working on. There’s a pumpkin spice muffin and a cupcake with a caramel made from melting down candy corn.” Sitting down beside Darren he was excited to see what he thought of the flavours.
“Maybe,” Darren said, not showing much remorse for having slept in so late. “There’s a reason musician jokes exist. Like why do musicians wake up at 6 o’clock? Because all the stores close at 7.” It was true that whenever he didn’t have morning classes, most of his engagements took place in the evenings. He sat up and rubbed his hands together eagerly, then carefully pealed open the box as though not to disturb its inhabitants in fear that they might run away. “Yay, cupcakes for breakfast.” It was hardly breakfast time. “Want some coffee? Eat with me.” He was already getting up to go get coffee.

“Well, I can clearly see that now.” Skyler laughed, reaching out to pretend to run his hand through Darren’s hair with a grin on his face. He didn’t really think he was going to see the other man here since they ended their friendship in such bad terms. And it was his fault. Before he could even apologize about how right Darren was, he was already packing his stuff to move away. “I’m here and I’m alive, am I not?”
The guy he’d ghosted now forgotten, Darren wrapped his hand around his beer and took a gulp of it, eyes still trained on Sky. “Shit, don’t joke like that,” he said with a chuckle, a bit relieved that that guy was no longer in the picture. It may not have been any of his business and it may have been rash of him to stop talking to Skyler over it, but a part of him never stopped wondering and worrying, as much as he tried to convince himself that he no longer cared. “Where are you staying? You got your own place?” He picked up his burger and took a sizeable bite out of it, having an ever healthy appetite.

cee-trohman:
@darrbear
Arriving back at his apartment block Cee was balancing a cake box in one arm as he unlocked the door to the main hallway. He’d got to know a few of his neighbours since moving in with Finn and Darren was one of his favourites. Walking up to the others door he knocked hoping he was in. He’d been working on a new muffin for the autumn season and was hoping Darren would help him taste test it.
It took a moment before the patter of footsteps was heard from the other side of the door, followed by its opening. Darren stood barefoot with a toothbrush sticking out of his mouth, peering at whoever it was that had come to visit. The moment he saw that it was Cee, he made an unintelligible sound (courtesy of the toothbrush) before insistently gesturing for him to come inside. He held up one finger for Cee to wait a moment, then hurried back to the bathroom to quickly rinse his mouth so that he could actually talk. “Hey!” he said finally as he hopped out again. “What’d ya bring me?” He plopped into a chair, excitedly eyeing the cake box.

maddoxirons:
Maddox had just finished with a photoshoot and was texting as he left the building. He had on a pair of sunglasses and was wearing an oversized hoodie that hid most of his figure, though it was sharply contrasted by his skinny jeans. He looked around, sighing softly as he realized his car hadn’t actually bothered to show up. Finding the nearest person, he walked over and smiled. “Hey… So my driver is apparently unable to read a clock so I’m stranded here… do you know the way to this address?” He held out his phone, his home address punched in. Despite having lived in the city for four years, he couldn’t get around to save his life. He always had someone to drive him or guide him. Learning the streets seemed useless. “I’ll give you like… two hundred dollars if you get me home safe.” Maybe offering a stranger money and his home address wasn’t smart. But Maddox wasn’t smart.
Darren skeptically raised an eyebrow at first and then looked down at the address written on the boy’s phone. He clicked his tongue out of habit before answering. “Uh, yeah. That’s easy.” He was great with directions and despite having only been in Chicago since mid-August, he was already pretty decently adjusted. He wanted to say more, make some smart comment, tease the boy for not being able to get around on his own, but then--He balked, jaw hanging open a little as he had to do a double take of the offer. His plan had been to hit the practice rooms at university and practice for several hours but--this suddenly sounded way more appealing, albeit unrealistic. “Are you serious? Two hundred?” he asked. Despite his head screaming at him not to look a gift horse in the mouth, his unfortunate ‘decent human being’ side told him that he shouldn’t take up that offer and just help the poor guy get home for no pay--he was a bit torn, but decided he’d go along with it, whether he ended up actually accepting payment or not. He shut his mouth, adjusted the strap of his instrument case over his shoulder, and then gestured with his head in the direction of the nearest Loop station for the line that they needed to take. “Come on, I’ll take you. I hope you’re not afraid of the subway,” he said with a teasing grin.

Wally smiled brightly. “Wow… Violin is dope. That’s like a hard one. I can barely strum a guitar and you use one of those sticks? You’re awesome.” He laughed softly and smiled brightly at the other. “Not really. But that’s cause I’m a drummer. People only want drums in the background. Plus I’m always banging shit to some tune so I guess I’m kinda always playing?” He took the other’s hand, shaking it firmly. “Wally. Nice to meet ya!”
“Uh. That stick is called a bow, okay,” he said with a lot of sass in his tone now, trying his best not to tease too much but not being able to help himself. “Sorry, but I paid a ton of money for that stick for people to be calling it that.” Despite the hint of slight offense in his voice, he didn’t cease grinning. “But you’re right. It’s not easy, which is why so many people quit. What kind of band are you in?”

casey-blythe:
“Oh my god, that’s fucking awesome! But you didn’t TELL me! Ugh, I totally would’ve had a welcome to Chicago party for you or something,” he teased. Casey looked up a little when Darren reached out to touch his blonde locks, and he grinned softly. “I usually go get it done, just to avoid damaging my hair. You’ve seen it at it’s natural,” he mused. “You look fantastic, Darren, but we been knew. My life’s just been a whirlwind of things these past few months. Remember how I’d gotten an internship with Axis Mundi and moved to the offices here for work? Well… after a few years of working with them, they tried to screw me over, so I quit, and now I’m running my own business!”
“I know, sorry, I got kinda distracted. I was too busy with my senior recitals and juries last semester and then I went to Hong Kong in the summer with the fam. Wasn’t even sure if you’d still be here.” He grinned at the memory of Casey’s dark hair from back in the day. “When I meet your boyfriend, remind me to show him pics cause I bet you burned those, but I most certainly haven’t,” he teased, not really a hundred percent certain of Casey’s current relationship status but wagering a good guess that he was in a relationship with that guy named Michael he’d seen mentioned on his Instagram account. He managed to look a little surprised then. “Oh, no shit, congrats. Yeah, I think I remember seeing something about that. Good for you. If I’d known you’d grow up to become sugar daddy material, I would’ve snatched you up myse--” He sputtered out a laugh, unable to keep a straight face long enough to finish that sentence. He rested his hand on Casey’s shoulder and gave him a squeeze and a light shake. “I’m kidding, I’m proud of you though.”
