Live theater in the His Dark Materials universe must be wild. Surely an actor's daemon also has lines to recite, so their daemon's form probably also factors into casting decisions. Maybe some plays have vague character descriptions for daemons, but I bet other plays have really specific or central daemon characters. And sure, big-budget theaters can afford to hire a separate actor with a particular daemon to stand backstage while their daemon plays its part onstage, but community theaters don't have those kinds of resources.

Like if you're casting for Julius Caesar, surely the real historical Caesar had a pretty iconic daemon, right? Are you going to cast an actor with a pigeon daemon as Caesar and just have everyone suspend their disbelief that it's Caesar's lioness, ἁμαρτία?

Searching for cinema that soothes? Ella Kemp suggests it could be as simple as looking for a film poster with a white background.

How many weeks has it been? When did any of us last go blindly into a cinema and take a chance on something new? Film-watching in the time of Covid-19 has changed. The immediate and never-ending news of the world is frightening. Is it still, and more than ever, okay for me to sink into movies to alleviate my mood, just for a bit? How is that even possible when the world has come to a standstill?

We are forced to adapt, and it has taken some time for my attention span and emotional capacity to adjust. But I think I might have found a solution, and I have the meticulous list-makers of Letterboxd to thank. It was Izzy’s list of comfort movies that first lit the fuse. Specifically, the second, third and fourth row; films including Billy Elliot, Clueless, School of Rock.

Fifteen stark posters, speaking one truth: We are vulnerable and nervous. What we need is a film poster with a white background to assure us the movie exists entirely to serve and soothe us.

List-making on Letterboxd has never been more prolific. Pandemic movies, overdue filmography catch-ups, comfort movies galore. Everyone categorizes and logs their watches differently, but Izzy’s pattern speaks to me with an epiphanic answer. I’ve always admired successful color-coding, but now I see its crucial function.

Alright, folks, there are a lot of people in my inbox right now talking about time travel and talking about it is just CONFUSING, so I created some visuals with some explanations as I understand it, so let’s go through this together.

This is Steve’s natural timeline:

By the Russos explanation, this is what we have now:

A divergent timeline! EXCEPT???

Thanos turns to dust in 2023. That has specific connotations within the universe, which means the only logical explanation to divine from it is that he is killed rather than sent back to his own time.

The timeline from 2014 onward should collapse. There’s no more 2014!Thanos! But if it DOES collapse, he never traveled to the future to be killed, because there is no “future” to travel to!

But if it DOESN’T collapse, there’s no past!Thanos to create the Gauntlet, thus no Snap, and therefore no reason to time travel in the FIRST place. You having fun yet, gang???

But wait! There’s more!

WHERE IS THE STEVE FROM THE ORIGINAL TIMELINE?

If we have a divergent timeline, there should be 3 different Steves from 1970 onward:

1) The one in the ice 2) The one who stays, creating the divergent timeline 3) The one who doesn’t stay and goes back to his original time

THAT IS HOW THE MULTI-VERSE WORKS.

And then, what??? The other!Steve just casually reality-jumps to the original 2023–which should not even exist anymore!!!–to hand over the shield and be like, “BYE BITCHES I DUN LIVED MY LIFE”?

In conclusion: The Russos did not think this through at all.
