Travel from Hawaii to Antarctica in a perfectly straight line and you will cross the international date line 7 times. You will go from today to tomorrow to today to tomorrow to today to tomorrow to today to tomorrow. •Via • @fanmaps "The International Date Line (IDL) is an imaginary line of demarcation on the surface of Earth that runs from the North Pole to the South Pole and demarcates the change of one calendar day to the next. It passes through the middle of the Pacific Ocean, roughly following the 180° line of longitude but deviating to pass around some territories and island groups." • Like what I share? Last week Lego, which was first founded in 1932, reported that its revenues had grown 46% in the first half of this year. That's the kind of growth usually associated with tech companies or early-stage startups — not 91 year-old plastic toy brickmakers. - By • @chartrdaily For Lego, those remarkable results are partly down to a pandemic bump (nothing quite says "indoor activity" like building Lego), but also 15+ years of a new strategic direction. - In 2003 the company was in trouble. Indebted, with sales declining, Lego needed to make some changes. They decided to embrace their fans, young or old, and diversify away from the humble brick. - They gave people the ability to design their own Lego model and then buy the elements required to build it. They made Lego movies. They made Lego video games. Sold Lego city replicas. They started a YouTube channel (which now has 16 billion views). They built new Legoland theme parks (there are now 8 in total), opened more interactive stores and partnered with huge brands like Star Wars, Marvel and Harry Potter. - The result? More than a six-fold increase in revenue since 2004. - Like this? We send 6 charts a week in our free newsletter just like this one. Oh, and it's completely, 100% free. https://www.instagram.com/p/CU7guN7giAT/?utm_medium=tumblr

A combination of high-efficiency flush toilets and hospital cleaning products sets the stage for the spread of C. difficile in a hospital setting. How? Via • @knowablemag 🚽 The first graphic shows the dispersal of water droplets from a high-efficiency toilet 5 seconds after a flush. Droplets may reach as far as 1.4 meters from the toilet bowl, with most landing in front of the toilet, and some as high as 0.8 meters above the floor. Total volume of water ejected is 6.8 milliliters. The weight of larger droplets leads most to fall back down into the toilet or onto surfaces. Smaller droplets, which are more likely to form after the use of some cleaning products, can be cast up into the air, where they may remain suspended. 💧 Lydia Bourouiba’s studies suggest airborne droplets from toilets in hospitals could contribute to the spread of bacterial spores that cause a potentially deadly form of diarrhea. What the world's population would look like if it was piled up in the Grand Canyon Via • @fanmaps • "If you took all the world's population and dumped them into the Grand Canyon they wouldn't fill a fraction of it. In fact the 7.2 billion people would only form a comparatively tiny pile - as shown in this fascinating mock-up image." • "The graphic was put together by respected YouTube presenter Michael Stevens on his Vsauce channel, which juxtaposes the population of the world alongside the famous deep canyon by the Colorado River - situated in Arizona." • Like what I share? For the first time ever, the people of the Akiak tribe in south-west Alaska, will have access to broadband internet. Via • @statista This was made possible after global communications company OneWeb launched 248 satellites into space, and officially signed its first contract with service providers Pacific Dataport and Microcom. If this venture proves successful, it could become a real boon for rural areas, which are largely undersupplied with reliable internet access. As evidenced by our charts based on estimates by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), only 50% of households in the Americas' rural areas had access to the internet in 2019. With the exception of the African continent, urbanised regions on the other hand showed high penetration rates. The smallest gap between urban and rural areas can be seen in Europe, even though the APAC region accounts for over half of all fixed broadband subscriptions worldwide. Satellite-based internet connections are often the only option for areas without access to fixed or mobile broadband internet solutions. As of now, only 3.75 million of a total of 1.2 billion broadband subscriptions are satellite-based. While SpaceX's Starlink is aiming for individual consumer contracts and is currently in its beta testing phase, OneWeb plans to sell its services in bulk to service providers and countries. https://www.instagram.com/p/CS2FP_-geS_/?utm_medium=tumblr

Drought almost seems too puny a word to describe the water scarcity that America's south-west is experiencing. Via @theeconomist A white strip more than 150 feet tall encircles the turquoise surface of Lake Mead, America’s largest reservoir, showing visitors how high the water once was, and how far it has fallen. Perhaps no place is more spooked by Lake Mead’s decline than the Las Vegas valley (pictured), which gets 90% of its water from the nearby reservoir. The valley cut its water use by 23% since 2002 while adding about 800,000 residents to its population. Tap the link in our bio to to find out why the region’s future could be hotter and drier still. #timelapse #vegas #gis #interesting #instagood https://www.instagram.com/p/CSrPlHSAJz2/?utm_medium=tumblr
