MAGIC TOOLS
While using our internal source of magic, one can also turn to tools to enhance the effects of spells. At first look what might seem silly can be turned into a great instrument for our magical workings. They help potentializing and enhancing our spells and rituals. While not every witch may choose to use those tools, it's still good to learn about the symbolism and energy behind them. Some tools are natural like herbs and crystals, while others require some effort to craft and consecrate them.
Do take what resonates best with you and forget the rest. Witchcraft is always about your own path, it doesn't have rules.
First magical tool is:
CAULDRON
The cauldron is a very traditional symbol of witchcraft and is associated with the origin of life. In other words, it is the womb of the great Mother Nature, the place where everything was born and to which everything will return. On the altar, the cauldron is used to represent the element of water, as it also represents life.
For these reasons, the cauldron is used to create and transform, as witches use it to burn prayers and make potions. Therefore, it is very common for many practitioners to have more than one cauldron, be it made from steel, clay or some other material.
BROOM
The broom is the most well-known tool in witchcraft. We all grew up seeing the stereotype of a witch flying on a broomstick. However, the witch's broom isn't meant to make the witch fly, but rather to purify the space. Just as we clean our house with a regular broom, the witch's broom cleanses the air before a ritual or purifies our home. To do this, it's necessary to sweep the air without touching the floor and visualize purifying the house, expelling negative energies toward the exit.
The broom is also used to protect against negative energies. In rituals, it is placed at the entrance of the magic circle to purify those who enter and prevent negative energies from invading the space. Another way to protect yourself is to place the broom under the bed to protect the sleeper from bad dreams or to aid in astral travel.
WAND
The wand is used in witchcraft to channel energy into a spell by consecrating an object, empowering a request, or casting a magic circle.
In some witchcraft traditions, the wand represents the element of fire, and in others, the element of air. The wand functions as an extension of the user's body, containing energy and amplifying power. Traditionally, the wand is made of wood, but it can also be made of metal.
Some witches like to make their own wands, so that the instrument carries their energy from the cutting to the consecration. It is very common for them to choose the tree from which the branch will be taken, considering the symbolism of that plant.
STAFF
The staff functions like a wand, but is larger. Like the wand, this instrument channels energy and enhances magic. It can be used to cast magic circles, consecrate objects, and balance energies.
The staff can also be made of wood and adorned with magical symbols and crystals. Some practitioners like to carve animals into their staffs to attract that animal's energy. This is why snakes are so common on staffs, representing wisdom and the psychic.
CHALICE
The chalice, like the cauldron, represents the womb of Mother Nature and the origin of life. Besides representing the element of water, it is also used to drink wine or juice at the end of rituals. Because it represents a feminine, emotional, and intuitive image, the chalice can be used for a practice known as scrying, the art of divination performed through visualizing a liquid or any object with a reflection.
CRYSTALS & STONES
Stones and crystals are used on the altar to represent the earth element. We can rebalance ourselves with the earth element in meditations, spells, or rituals, using any stone, whether it's a common rock found in a garden or a river, or a cut crystal from a jewel.
Crystals are capable of balancing, transmuting, storing, and transmitting energies, a common practice in magic and self-discovery. They can be used in a variety of ways, such as in baths, potions, meditations, as amulets, or simply placed in a space to emit energies.
PLANTS AND HERBS
Plants are the most common "instruments" in witchcraft because they are easy to find and offer numerous benefits. All plants possess natural power, which, used wisely, can aid in magic for any purpose. They can be used to create spells, magical baths, potions, and magical foods. They can also be placed in an environment to purify or transmute energies and, like stones and crystals, rebalance the earth element.
ATHAME
The athame is a double-edged knife used in witchcraft to cut negative energies and direct them. This instrument contains masculine energy and is used to represent the element of air.
The athame is not a sharp instrument, as its function is solely to cut energy. When a sharp knife is needed to cut herbs and other ingredients for potions or spells, practitioners use the boline, reserved for this purpose only. The sword can replace the athame when necessary, as it is also double-edged and cuts energy from either side.
INCENSE
Incense has been used by various religions and traditions for many centuries. It is believed that the smoke rising to the heavens connects humans with the divine. On the altar, incense represents the element of air and is typically placed in a censer or censer, which can be used to incense the space.
In addition, incense is commonly used to purify and consecrate spaces and objects. Many people use incense for meditation, as it makes the environment more pleasant. There are many types of fragrances that can aid in rituals and spells of purification, protection, prosperity, love, and well-being.
BELL
The bell is an instrument used not only in witchcraft but in many religions. Besides being present in rituals and celebrations to summon participants, the ringing of the bell is believed to have the power to disperse negative energy and attract positive energy. It represents the element of air and can be used in cleansing and harmonization spells, or to mark the beginning and end of a ritual. The traditional bell is commonly used, but there are also Tibetan bells or pin bells (common in feng shui). To protect and attract positive energy to the home, the wind chime is used, placed in a window or doorway.
CANDLES
Candles are the most widely used tools in modern witchcraft, representing fire, one of the most powerful elements in nature. This element connects humans to the spiritual realm and promotes purification and transformation. Because of this, candles are used to make requests, give thanks, consecrate objects, or transmute energies.
Each candle color represents a type of energy to be worked with in magic. The most traditional is the white candle, which can be used for any purpose and is an excellent all-around tool for those who lack the tools to perform a spell.
HAT
In the Middle Ages, the pointed hat was worn by the most influential people in society. They believed it made them more powerful and closer to the divine. After it began to be worn by people from other social classes, the hat fell out of fashion. Over time, it became associated with those who lived in the countryside and those more connected to nature. Later, unfortunately, the story was distorted, and those who still wore the hat were called witches, associating the accessory with the devil's horns.
In magic, the conical hat symbolizes not only a connection with the divine but also a potentializer of energies, much like the pyramids. Traditionally, the witch's hat is black because it is a protective color, but it can also be made in other colors.
CLOTHES
While some traditions or personal preferences allow spells and rituals to be performed without specific attire, there are also those who prefer to wear attire, whether purchased or handmade, to serve a specific purpose. The color of the attire is important in these cases, as the symbolism of the color is tied to the spell. If the person wears black, then no negative energy can, in theory, penetrate their skin.
However, if they use this same attire in a prosperity or self-love spell, they may experience results contrary to those expected. It is recommended to align every small detail for the best results in your work — however, it is worth emphasizing that you are free to adhere to this form of thought or not. After all, your path inside witchcraft will always be about what suits you better.
For some workings, or because it is asked of you, you might shed all your clothes and go nude, which has nothing to do with sex or sexuality. Because of this practice, stories of witches dancing naked in the forest are common. The reality is that, naked, people feel the energy of the rituals more, but like many things in magic, it is not mandatory, as there are those who do not feel comfortable doing it.

I kinda wish there were more HelPols around to organize actual feasts and festivals in honor of our gods
Like I'm always happy to celebrate them alone at home and give offerings, but I wish I had that sense of community, and it's the reason I envy Christians.
None of this is meant to sound angry or petty, but they get buildings of worship everywhere and they have fellow followers everywhere they can have community with.
I went on break at work one time and noticed there were six people around a table having a Bible study and they were just laughing and talking and having a good time, and I want that, just Hellenic
I want to be able to get together with other HelPols, bring food and wine, give offerings, and maybe there's even a stage set up where people will reenact some of the myths in honor of the god
Dionysus specifically was honored in theaters and with plays about him, and I want to take part in that so badly. I want to get together with other followers of Dionysus, dance to music, drink wine, and either watch or act in a play about him
I just wish Hellenic Polytheism (and Paganism in general) was recognized more as a religion so it was easier for these festivals to take place and be set up
#its funny that you say that#because i was thinking about how cool it would be if there were some pagan hangouts#like idk a cafe or class or just somewhere where we can just talk about our deities without worry#i know theres themed stuff irl or whatever#but i know they're probably trying not to be religious spots or anything
