Hey Penn I wanted to ask you some questions about Zosan:

1: Who feel In love First?

2: Why did Zoro or Sanji feel in love with the other?

I also wanted to say that I Love your artstyle its unique and beautyful. Hope your doing well and keep on the great Work!!

Hell yeah I’ll talk about zosan, also thank you so much!!

1. Zoro definitely fell in love first, or at the very least he acknowledges that he’s in love first. Zoro’s very straightforward and doesn’t question himself the way Sanji does so once he realizes what he’s feeling he’s just kind of like “I guess this is what we’re doing now.” It’s his first time falling in love so there’s a lot of complex emotions that come with that, but he’s not going to waste time lying to himself about it.

Sanji on the other hand is the runner track star of “can’t catch me, gay thoughts!!” He’s spent a long time suppressing the parts of himself he thinks are wrong so he doesn’t even notice it at first. Falling in love with Zoro really sneaks up on him. Sanji is very used to love burning hot and fast. He was unprepared to comprehend what it feels like when love creeps up on you and you suddenly find yourself looking at someone you’ve known for a while and where you think you should find annoyance all you feel is fondness. That TERRIFIES HIM. And he runs from that feeling for a good while before he finally accepts it.

2. Zoro LOVES having someone that pushes him to be better. There’s a reason his most significant relationship before the Straw Hats was the girl he desperately wanted to surpass. Zoro’s at his best when he has someone who challenges him every day. Sanji keeps him on his toes and their fights and their rivalry encourage him to always be better than he was yesterday. He loves that they fight, he loves that he has to go all out. The only other person who matches his strength is Luffy, but Luffy likes to roughhouse more than he likes to spar, it doesn’t have the same intensity. He loves that sometimes he kicks Sanji’s ass, sometimes he gets his ass kicked, and sometimes they’re deadlocked until they’re both sprawled out bruised and exhausted on the deck. He wants to fight with Sanji for the rest of their damn lives.

He also loves how kind Sanji is. Zoro himself isn’t unkind, but he’s not overly interested in going out of his way to help someone if it conflicts with his own self interest. But Sanji would give a stranger the shirt off his back and the food out of his mouth without being asked, and while Zoro doesn’t really understand it he recognizes it as a fundamental part of what makes Sanji Sanji.

Sanji loves how Zoro seems so stoic and hard on the outside but he’s really such a big teddy bear once you take the time to get to know him. Sanji’s known too many powerful men who leveraged that power to oppress the people around them, but Zoro isn’t like that. He’s strong enough to take down insanely powerful enemies but he lets his crew mates pick on him with only half-hearted threats everyone knows he wouldn’t follow through on. Zoro relishes a good fight, but he’s not needlessly cruel. He’s not the kind of man who would pick on those weaker than him to make himself feel strong.

He also loves how direct Zoro is. Sanji has a tendency to overthink and run himself in circles and oftentimes Zoro will interrupt his spiraling by saying something blunt and honest that Sanji wasn’t expecting because he just… hasn’t known a lot of people like that. He appreciates that (once they sort all their shit out) he doesn’t have to guess if Zoro is being straightforward with him. Zoro doesn’t say one thing when he means another, he doesn’t see the point in dancing around things, and that directness is something Sanji values. Zoro is solid, he’s an anchor for the entire crew. Sanji is the sky Zoro admires and Zoro is the earth that keeps Sanji grounded. (And Luffy is the sun that gives them both light and life.)

He also thinks Zoro is hot.. like really really hot. Stupidly hot it’s actually unfair how hot he is. He’s always allowed himself to admit that Zoro is objectively a good looking man, but once he admits he has feelings for him it’s like the floodgates open and he has to squint when he looks at him or he’ll get mad about how hot he is and then make it Zoro’s problem lmao

He looks over to curly brow again. He’s smoking, which is normal enough, but his foot tapping on the floor and his hand clenching and unclenching give him away. Something has been bothering him since Zoro met up with everyone again. Maybe if he stares at him long enough, he’ll be able to peer into his brain and figure him out. He pictures it as a pink blob with one giant swirl, and the image makes him smirk despite himself. But if that idiot cook starts acting all weird around him, he may have to choke the reason out. Because something dumb like this shouldn’t be enough to fuck up their dynamic. Curly brow being annoying, and pissy, and a perv, and a great cook, and high-tempered, and strong, and talkative, and loyal, and stupid, and kind, and his rival was what he was used to. Him being any kind of uncertain around him, he was not.

He didn’t want this to change what they are. Because at least when they’re arguing, they’re close together. At least when there’s danger, they can work together as one. At least when the night is dark, and no one else is around, they can share space together, combine their burdens and make them a bit lighter, just for a little while. And no words need to be spoken. Because they both understand.

That’s not something he wants to lose.

Thinking about how Zoro is obviously concealing his hurt/anger over Sanji leaving here but it also subtly shows how his relationship with Sanji is different in nature than the other Strawhats’ (maybe minus Luffy) relationship with Sanji. Chopper and Nami are concerned with “getting Sanji back/saving Sanji,” but Zoro thinks it’s better to just leave Sanji be as they have a more imminent threat ahead. In a way I reckon this shows Zoro’s inherent trust in Sanji, and it’s kind of… sweet? Zoro knows that Sanji knows what he’s doing. He was fine with leaving half of the crew under Sanji’s lead in an unknown territory, and even when reading Sanji’s letter he (and Luffy) never doubted that Sanji would be back.

On top of that, Zoro understands the role that him and Sanji have as the “wings” (even if that dynamic hasn’t been named yet). In Thriller Bark, they witnessed each other’s resolve to protect Luffy and the crew at their own expense. Luffy won’t allow anyone on his crew to get hurt, but Zoro knows that if there were to be anyone to sacrifice themselves for the crew, it would be him and Sanji. That’s why he’s allowing Sanji to make his sacrifice right now, trusting that he’s making the right move, despite feeling 18 levels of hurt and betrayal deep down.

This is where he differs from Luffy: Luffy doesn’t leave things unsaid. Luffy wants to “ask” Sanji, wants explicit confirmation on what Sanji actually needs. Zoro relies on the unspoken contract that him and Sanji formed throughout the many battles they fought together. There’s no saying which approach is better; it’s just interesting how they’re presented in contrast lol.

luffy as the sun and ace as icarus. ace's adoration for his younger brother, dearly boasting about him to anyone who would listen. luffy's unwavering warmth and ability to connect with everyone he meets. ace's recklessness. luffy and nika, the sun god, his related powers to the sun itself. ace as the son of a great man, daedalus/roger, and his yearning to be free. ace dying in luffy's arms while basking in his brightness, thanking him for loving him as he plummets to the floor.

(or) ace as the sun and luffy as icarus. luffy's admiration for his big brother who always seemed untouchable, and the clamber for his affection. luffy's own recklessness, ace's magnetic warmth and fire related powers. luffy who has always fought for his freedom more than anything in this world. luffy falling away from ace, crashing down to earth, the sun just out of reach as it remains high in the sky, now eternally away from him.

and sabo as the sky in between them. the atmosphere, unnoticeable, forgotten until his brother was already falling through it. sabo’s amnesia, an absent and unknown piece of their story. the air which encases his brothers in wordless hugs, and in futile mourning, cannot lift what has already fallen. his memory influenced ace and luffy in every moment he was gone, they ached to fly. and only him and luffy, the sky and the sun, remain in fruitless grief.
