“I’m sorry you couldn’t find me. I have been in the woods. I put myself there because I couldn’t be good. I have been running with foxes and running with crows and I have found myself a home where no one goes.”
— Florence Welch, from “Useless Magic: Lyrics & Poetry,” published c. 2018

Let’s start a Native Book Club!! :D
Lol that stupid photo. Anyways, I love reading so I wanted to challenge myself this year by reading books only from Native authors or on Native topics. While I compiled this list, I noticed that there are a TON of Native books out there. A lot of them were independently released as well so some were hard to find. Also Chapters/Indigo here in Canada has a great variety in the Community & Culture: First Nations section. So this is only a scratch on the surface on what I found but these are the ones that looked the most interesting to me. Since I started this little challenge, I’ve already finished The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, Monkey Beach, Medicine River, Medicine Walk, and Tears in the Grass. Right now I’m taking in every part of Indian Horse, I’m really loving it so far! It’s sad, but so important. I can’t wait to watch the film.
I’m also hoping to do Native book reviews on my Youtube Channel once I’m done Indian Horse. Make sure to subscribe to get notified!
Also if you have any suggestions on books to add to this list, let me know! I’m interested to see if there are also other Native books from the Inuit, Maori, Australian Aboriginals, and so on. Basically other than Prairie First Nations because I love learning about other Tribes. And if you read any let me know what you think of them as well!
Happy Reading!
Xx

“YOU DON’T LOOK NATIVE” - is something that bothers me greatly. I see it happen all the time, especially to Natives in the US & Canada.
Telling any Native person that they aren’t Native because they don’t fit your superficial stereotype is RACIST! Every single person pictured above is a NATIVE.
This is something that all non-Natives need to understand, there is no “Native look”.
- Not all Native women look like Disney’s “Pocahontas”. - Not all Native men look like a Plains NDN with long flowing hair. - Not all Natives have high cheekbones. - Not all Natives have black straight hair. Some have brown hair, some have curly hair, some have light hair and so on. - Yes Native men CAN grow beards and have facial hair. - Not all Natives have brown eyes. Some have blue eyes, some have grey eyes, some have green eyes and some have hazel eyes. - There are tall Natives and there are short Natives. - There are dark skinned Natives, light skinned Natives and pale skinned Natives.

I appreciate the replies to this post. This post was made in the middle of the night after the Maryland shooting. I was scared to death. A few comments I got on this post weren't very kind but honestly these few telling me to learn to defend myself have helped. I grew up in a very liberal home but I think it is important that everybody out there learn self defence. In the times we live in we cannot rely on our government to protect us. After posting this I realized no where is ever going to be "safe." The best we can do is learn to protect ourselves and our loved ones. I also hope that some day liberals and conservatives can stop seeing each other as the enemy especially in times of crisis like this. No matter if you are liberal or conservative you are American and you have a right to feel safe in your own country. I wish you all the best and hope you take something out of this, if not just ignore it but hopefully someone will appriciate it.
When am I going to feel safe?

Driving down the road with you Somewhere along that highway There are cigarette butts Thrown out of the passenger seat They have touched my lips And yours And they may soon be the only evidence That we were ever Us.

I want to fall in love with someone who understands every part of me. I am not onr thing. I do not fit one mold. I want to love and be loved by someone who will love me while I run free and wild in the wind. I want to love and be loved by someone who will run with me. I want to love and be loved by a deeply complex person who sees past labels and sees people instead. I want to love and be loved for all that I am not just one aspect of me one day out of the year.

Quote
I remember holding onto something that could never be, and crying over the things that could have been. I remember my white knuckles and worry lines, my sweaty palms and a racing heart. All for the sake of something that was never meant to be, that was completely out of this universe.
